Series of One-Day Skill Development Program with CNC Turner & 3D Printer

DIET e-Newsletter, March 2018

A series of one-day skill development program with CNC Turning Center & 3D Printer was organized by Department of Mechanical Engineering during February & March, 2018. 275+ final year diploma students of various engineering colleges across Gujarat actively participated in this training program. This training program was designed to make students familiar with the operating process, programming and use of program codes, tool & work setting and product manufacturing. It also included product manufacturing through rapid prototyping i.e. 3D Printer and various industrial measuring techniques. Training program helped students to understand working principle and operation of CNC Machine & 3D Printer. It also helped them to understand scope of these machines in real world applications. The program was conducted as an outreach activity to share benefits of recourses and expertise at the Institute with community.

Industrial Visit at Meteorology Department of Airport, Rajkot


Students of Department of Mechanical Engineering visited Meteorology Department of Airport on 22 Mar., 2018. The aim of the visit was to raise awareness regarding weather forecasting and various climate measuring instruments. Chief-in-charge of Meteorology department Mr. Nileshbhai Panara shared information regarding precaution parameters for safe landing, take off and while cruising at higher altitude. He also introduced various measuring instrument like humidity meter, psychrometer, dew point apparatus, rain gauge, thermograph, optical anemometer, digital & ordinary barometer, dry bulb & wet bulb thermometer, cloud-fog forecasting balloons etc. He also shared few interesting case studies.

Industrial Visit at Silver Pumps & Motors

Students of BE Sem. 4 from Department of Electrical Engineering visited Silver Pumps & Motors, Rajkot on 06 Mar., 2018. The company is one of the leading suppliers of Self priming pumps, Centrifugal pumps, Openwell submersible pumps, Borewell submersible pumps and Mud/Sewage pumps. It has in- house manufacturing, sourcing and quality control facility equipped with world class instruments, and other recourses. Expert Talk on Software Testing


Department of Computer Engineering organized an expert talk on Software Testing, Automated Testing and Quality Control on 16 Mar., 2018 for the students of BE Sem. 6 at the department. The invited expert was Mr. Sandeepsinh Vaghela, Sr. QA Automation Engineer, eInfochips- Ahmedabad. During the lecture expert discussed different tools and techniques commonly used for software testing. He also discussed about ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) Certification. Future job opportunities in this domain were also highlighted. The seminar was attended by 130+ students. Special training session was arranged for faculties and students who are currently involved in App development. During the session various aspects of software testing were demonstrated.

Industrial Visit at Rajkot Railway Junction, GERI Laboratory, and Life Building

Field Visit at Rajkot Railway Junction, GERI Lab. and Life Building, Rajkot was organized for students of BE Sem 6 of Department of Civil Engineering on 22 Mar., 2018. Visit to railway junction was with an aim to make students aware about role of Civil Engineer in Railway Engineering and also to show them working of various components of railway track as points, crossing, sleeper, switch joints, etc. At GERI, students were exposed to the field of material testing. Life Building won best construction award by J K CEMENT in the year 2001, the visit was aimed to show students example of quality of workman ship and best construction practices.

Industrial Visit at P.M. Diesels Pvt. Ltd.


Students of BE Sem. 6 of Department of Mechanical Engineering visited P. M. Diesels Pvt. Ltd. , Rajkot on 17 Mar., 2018. P. M. Diesels is one of the leading manufacturer of diesel engines in India. They are currently in production of latest technology, light weight, fuel efficient and compact diesel engines ranging from 3 H.P. to 18 H.P which are used in varieties of applications ranging from marine, construction, power generation, automotive, etc. During the visit students were able to study assembling and testing of diesel Engine. They were also given insights on different parameters of diesel engine for its better performance.

Expert Lecture on Advance Measuring Instruments

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an expert talk on Advance Measuring Instruments on 13 Mar., 2018 for students of BE Sem. 4 and 6. Mr. Naval Zala head of the Quality Control department at Jyoti CNC Automation, Rajkot was invited for the expert talk. During his lecture he covered various advanced measuring instruments used in measurement and testing.

A Training Program on AutoCAD 2D & 3D Essentials

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized 15 days training program on AutoCAD for student of BE Sem. 4 as an add-on skill development activity along with regular academics. The program was conducted in two groups during the month of March. Main objective of the program was to introduce student to AutoCAD software and make them aware about various possibilities that can be explored using it. During the training program students were introduced to basic commands of toolbars like draw, modify

dimension, annotation etc. as well as other basic commands of 3D modeling. They were also exposed to assembly & detailed drawing, GD&T and practice of industrial drawing, etc. The training was also followed by exam to boost student’s confidence.

Participation in Smart Gujarat for New India Hackathon-2018

Smart Gujarat for New India Hackathon-2018 was the event organized by Education Department, Govt. of Gujarat, to create and promote innovation culture among students. The event aimed to engage students across universities and institutions of the State to provide smart solutions for existing problems of the Gujarat State. 16 Departments of Govt. of Gujarat submitted problem statements related to their work which were further classified in 7 broad areas. Students were expected to provide digital solutions to these problems. The screening round of the event were arranged at four different locations in the State on 10-11 Mar., 2018. Two teams from Department of Electrical Engineering and one team from Department of Computer Engineering were shortlisted for the screening round. From these team from Department of Electrical Engineering working on the project Automatic and Authorized Barricade and Alarm System for BRTS was shortlisted and participated in the grand finale of

Expert talk on Astronomy

An expert talk on Astronomy was organized at the Institute on 19 Mar., 2018. Mr. Nilesh Rana and team from Big Bang Astronomy club which is part of Lok Vigyan Kendra, Rajkot were invited for the talk. During the session they covered brief idea about universe, exciting wonders of the universe and current areas of study in the filed. Solar observation through high resolution telescope was also arranged during the program. The talk was attended by 65+ students. It was also proposed to start Astronomy club at the campus as a activity platform for interested students.

The team constituted of students of BE Sem. 8 & Sem. 4 that included Pratik Dhanwani, Kuldeep Chandani, Darshan Pandya, Dhruvi Amlani, Vivek Makadiya, Manthan Vyas, Krishna Parmar and Kailash Vangan. In 36-Hours of non-stop event students exhibited very good performance and provided practical solution to the problem addressed. The team designed solution based on image processing which allows to pass only authorized vehicles on the BRTS route.


Udaan 2018

Annual Cultural Festival of the Institute – Udaan was organized on 23 Mar., 2018. It is the function that students eagerly wait for as it is the occasion of celebration, felicitation, feast and festivity. Udaan-2018 was a three hour long cultural show presenting different flavors of culture and student’s talent. The program was held at Institute’s central garden and was power packed with entertaining performances of students in dance, drama, music and singing. Preparation for Udaan - 2018 officially started a month ago and after rigorous preparations and repeated auditions, around 70+ students participated in various on-stage performances. Different flavors of dance like classical, folk, hip hop, fusion, etc. were presented. Music of different genres like bollywood, folk, garba, western were also presented. Crowd was also entertained by involving them in live interactions. The stage was beautifully decorated by number of props and lightings all prepared by students. Around 1200+ students witnessed the event and enjoyed to the fullest.

World Sparrow Day

Community Activity club under Student Activity Center (SAC) at the Institute celebrated World Sparrow Day on 20 Mar., 2018. The aim of the program was to raise awareness regarding Sparrow conservation. On this day group of students gathered at Institute’s Nursery where various creative posters prepared by students on nature were displayed. Moreover adopting Best from Waste theme students & faculties prepared comfortable Bird Houses from waste wooden material and placed them at various locations in the campus that are suitable for birds habitat.




University Level Chess Tournament

GTU Sports Festival Spirit-2018 for students of Diploma Engineering is currently being celebrated. As a part of this, University level chess tournament was hosted by our Institute for Diploma Studies on 21 Mar., 2018. Students from various Institutions under GTU across the State participated in the event with enthusiasm and sportsman spirit.



Felicitation of Alumni and Music Event

Institute's alumni Chetan Fefar from Department of Civil Engineering BE Batch -2014 has opted for a career in Music Industry and has obtained training and worked as assistant under music composers of films like PK, 3-idiots, etc. Music club at the Institute grabbed an opportunity to invite Chetan at the Institute to interact with students and arranged a small music event on 12 Mar., 2018. During the event Chetan shared his college memories and journey in music industry after graduation. He along with members of Music club performed on the stage and entertained students. The program was attended by 150+ students.

Qualified in GATE Examination 2018

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination conducted by IISc and IITs on behalf of MHRD. It is primarily used as entrance examination for postgraduate admissions and for awarding scholarship/ assistantship during PG studies. Various PSU and Government sector enterprises also consider this examination as screening test in the process of recruitments. GATE is highly competitive examination with around 9 lac students appearing in the examination and with average result less than 15%. As per the result of GATE-2018, 10 students currently studying in BE Sem. 8 at the Institute have qualified the examination with competitive score. To appreciate their efforts and achievement, Institute will award them a cash prize of Rs. 5000.
