Elementary stream Requirements TheB.Ed.(Elementary)degreeisgranteduponcompletionof60credithoursofEducationcourseswhichincludethespecificrequirementslistedbelow.AllrequirementsforaB.A.,B.B.A.,orB.Sc.degree,orequivalent,mustbecompletedpriortotheawardingoftheB.Ed.degree.Courseworkisrequiredinfourareas: Foundations of Education (18 credit hours), Areas ofStudy(21credithours),Electives(6credithours),andFieldPracticum(15credithours).Aminimumof168credithourswillberequiredtoearnthetwodegrees,butthisispossibleifsomeEducationcourseshavebeencompletedaspartofone’sfirstbaccalaureatedegree.MostconsecutiveB.Ed.graduateswill have completed 180 credit hours. All courses in theFoundationofEducationandAreasofStudysectionsrequireaminimumgradeof“B-.”

Literacy Education–Thiscoursefocusesonliteracyattheelementaryandmiddleschoollevelswithapplicationatalllevels.Theemphasiswillbeonthedevelopmentofliteracyskills.Studentswillbeexposedtotopicssuchaslanguageacquisition,readingandwritingprocesses,andtheoreticalbasesforinstructionalprocedures.Listening,reading,speaking,writing,andrespondingskills,aswellaslessonplanningandvariedgroupworkwillbeemphasized.Avarietyofresourcesandproceduresappropriatetothestudents’developmentallevelswillbeemphasizedaswell.

Mathematics Education–Thiscoursefocusesontheinvestigationofapproachestomathematicsinstructionattheelementaryandmiddleschoollevelswithapplicationatalllevels.Effectiveusageofvariedmaterialssuchasmanipulativeswillbedevelopedthroughclass/groupactivities,unitandlessonplans,aswellasthroughavarietyofclassroomdiscussionsandinvestigations.Anumberofotherareaswillbeexploredincludingunitandlessonplanning,integrationofmathwithothersubjects,classroompresentations,andcurrenttrendsinmathematicseducation.

ItispossibletocompletetheB.T.Ed.degreein16monthsifastudententerstheprogramwith69credithoursfrompriortrainingand/orexperience.TheCrandallportionofthisdegreewillconsistof69credithours.Eighteenofthesecredithourswillbeaddressedthroughan18-weekInternshipinaformalschoolsetting,undertheguidanceandcoachingofahostteacherandCrandallUniversitysupervisors.

Successfulapplicantsmusthaveatleasttheequivalentof30credithoursand/orworkexperienceinareassuchasBusinessTechnology,ICT,CulinaryArts,InteriorDesign,Trades,orHospitality.ManystudentswillhavecompletedtheireducationthroughaCommunityCollegeorotherpost-secondaryinstitution(s).Preferenceforadmissionwillbegiventothosewhocanprovideevidenceofsuccessfulexperiencewithadolescents.

Q. how did you originally connect with st. Kitts international Academy? A.TheschoolcontactedtheEducationdepartmentatCrandallbecausetheyknewoftheprogram’sreputationintheMaritimesforproducingqualityteachers.IwasabouttofinishmyclassesatCrandallandtheopportunityseemedinteresting,soIheadedtoSt.KittsinJanuary.IstronglybelievethatthisopportunitywouldnothavebeenpossibleifIhadnotattendedCrandall.

Q. how does a classroom in st. Kitts differ from your Atlantic Canadian classroom experience? A.St.KittsInternationalAcademyisaprivateschoolthatteachesCanadiancurriculum,soIamteachingthesamelessonsthatIwouldbeathome,buttheopportunitiesformetolearnareexciting.Iteachstudentsfromallovertheworldandtheyeachhaveadifferentperspectiveontheissueswecoverinclass.LivingandteachinginSt.KittshasinspiredmeasaneducatorbecauseIfeelthatIappreciatethevalueandpowerofeducationmorethanIdidgrowingup.
