MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Wendy McQuiggan
2017-2019 President

March2019
WIC Week is here. I hope that you have reviewed our WIC Week schedule and can join us for one or more events. WIC Week is designed to increase the visibility of women working in the construction industry. The National theme for this year is “Be the Power in Your Success.” Most of us don’t realize how much power that we have. Marketing professionals know it: Almost all marketing is targeted toward women because they make the spending decisions. “Women now drive the world economy,” according to the Harvard Business Review. While it is important to recognize and appreciate all the women who have paved the way in the construction industry and the workforce overall, but we should not focus on the struggle but rather what we can do to make a change. There’s no reason why hardhats and high heels can’t share a closet.

MARCH: “STEPS TO COMMUNITY SUCCESS” Presented by Josh Epps with United Way The problems facing the Richmond and Petersburg region are big, complex, and need comprehensive solutions. United Way strives to build collaborative solutions to create strong alliances that can make the large-scale impact that is needed in our community.
United Way’s Community Impact work is driven by the Steps to Success model, which illustrates key milestones on the path to living a successful life. United Way doesn’t define success as being famous or a millionaire, but rather it is about having basic needs, a good job, and being prepared for school. The talk will include key points on local data related to each step and how we can find solutions to build a stronger, safer, and healthier Central Virginia.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Please be thinking about if you’re interested in possibly being a board member. The Nomination Committee will be in place at the March meeting and will meet soon sometime after the meeting.
Just a reminder, the board meets on the 1st Tuesday of every month, therefore, serving on the board will take additional time out of your regular schedule.
At the board meetings, you will be responsible for decisions made on the Chapter’s behalf. It is a privilege and honor to serve as a Board member.
If you need to know more, please contact Pam Stalnaker at [email protected].

A Gentle Reminder: Remember to RSVP to Christine Knable
by the deadline (2nd Thursday of the month) if you wish to attend the General Meetings: [email protected]
An accurate head count is required prior to the meetings in order to predict the number of tables and food.
HOSPITALITY

Jefferson Lakeside Country Club charges us for that reservation, so it will need to be paid. Cancellations can be made up to 24 hours before the meeting.

PROTECT YOUR EYES Over 2,000 eye injuries occur each day on job sites across the U.S. and one in ten of those injuries required missed days of work to recover. Of the total amount of work-related eye injuries that occur, 10 to 20 percent will cause temporary or permanent vision loss. While many think that eye injuries only occur in construction, trade or manufacturing jobs, nearly 40% of work-related eye injuries happen in healthcare facilities, offices, laboratories and other similar work environments. Safety experts and eye care providers agree that the right eye protection could have lessened the severity of these injuries or even prevented 90% of them.
Flying objects, particles, tools, chemicals and harmful radiation are the cause of most eye injuries. In many cases, implementing safe workplace practices and using appropriate protective eyewear could prevent injuries entirely. March is Workplace Eye Safety Awareness Month, which offers a great opportunity to remind everyone to help protect eyes from potential injury. If you do experience an eye injury, contact your eye doctor as soon as possible.

2019 Corporate Sponsors WAYS & MEANS Golf Tournament
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who helped us secure 21 Corporate Sponsors! WOW!!
Our brochure for all other levels of sponsorship and foursomes has been sent out and is also attached to this newsletter. Please share this brochure with your company, your colleagues, your subs and your customers as we still have a lot of sponsorship needs (especially hole sponsors and a Lunch sponsor). We are also looking for goodie bag item donations – drink cozies, tees, golf balls, pens, screen wipes, bags – anything your company deems appropriate and wants to gain some extra marketing off of! The afternoon flight is completely sold out! All remaining foursomes are for the morning flight only.
Volunteer info: It takes EVERY MEMBER of our chapter (and often some guests!) to run our Golf Tournament. Please make sure your calendar is marked for Thursday, May 2nd to spend all day or half day with us at Hunting Hawk Golf Club in Glen Allen, VA. Sign Up sheets will be coming out as well as further instructions and helpful hints.
We ask that you wear a red or white top to the tournament (no jeans allowed for bottoms). NAWIC logo is not required for the Golf Tournament, however if you would like to purchase an item with the NAWIC logo for the Golf Tournament or for your general use, samples and order forms are available at the March and April General Meetings, or you can reply to us by email. Shirts will be ready for pickup at the April meeting. Hundreds more items available to choose from online at: www.royalprintingcompany.com
New this year – you can bring your own shirt/jacket and have it embroidered with the NAWIC logo for $10. Just bring your shirt to the March meeting and we’ll have it back to you in April. Thanks and please reach out to Amy Atkins, Amanda Jenkins, Kristi Smith or Cara LeVere with any questions!

PAMELA STALNAKER NAWIC Member since: 2005 “I joined NAWIC to be a part of a group of professional ladies who work towards a common goal of promoting and improving the construction industry.
WIC WEEK MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS Read a featured member’s full bio each day on Facebook during WIC Week
MICKEY FORD, CIT NAWIC Member since: 1996 “I joined NAWIC to be able to interact with other ladies in our industry. I stay in NAWIC to be able to support other women in the construction industry.”
CHALLYN WALSH NAWIC Member since: 2018 “I was interested in joining NAWIC initially because I saw the organization as a great networking opportunity with other women in the industry.
After attending a few meetings and beginning to understand the amount of community outreach that NAWIC does, I was excited to be part of the organization and get more involved. It is also wonderful to be surrounded by women in the construction industry, as my day-to-day work experience consists almost entirely of men.”
SARAH WILKERSON NAWIC Member since: 2018 “Joining NAWIC was initially for networking purposes. After spending time with the members, I am staying because of the great work they do in the community, the support from other women in a similar field, and how much fun it is to be a part of this group!”
JENNIFER HAMBY, LEED AP – B,D & C NAWIC Member since: 2014 “I enjoy spending time with fellow women in the industry, when I started in construction I was the only one in my company and it was lonely.
I appreciate the fellowship and friendships that have grown as a result of my membership as well as the networking opportunities. Sometimes you just need to vent to someone who understands. Another benefit is being able to participate in the community service projects as an individual and with the help and support of my company.”
AMIRIA ALBEITAWI NAWIC Member since: 2018 “I joined NAWIC because of the invaluable connections, resources, and opportunities it provides me. From continuing education classes and seminars to fun events such as volunteering in our local community
to help a good cause – I am surrounded by likeminded professional women that I know will help me grow and be the best version of myself in the challenging and forever changing industry of construction. I am very humbled and excited to be a part of NAWIC and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and the relationships I have developed within the organization so far. I am excited for the future and I look forward to developing relationships, making new connections and continuing to learn and grow from the best ladies in our business! Special recognition for the NAWIC mentorship program. My mentor Dianne has been an invaluable resource and is becoming a great friend, I am very lucky to have her in my life.”
CHRISSIE SLATER, CBT, CCA, CDS, CIT NAWIC Member since: 1999 “I love NAWIC for the sisterhood we have. We support one another and help each other grow. I joined NAWIC because I liked the fact we worked with kids and get them interested in construction.”
WENDY MCQUIGGAN NAWIC Member since: 2012 “I joined NAWIC to meet other women in the construction industry. I was impressed with the work that NAWIC does with education and teaching young people about the industry. Also, participating in community outreach projects is something that I enjoy.”
I have developed leadership skills, the opportunity to acquire new skills by attending workshops, seminars, and conferences.”
