Primary School: 6 – 12 (7 years)

Upper Secondary School: 16 – 19 (3 years)

Primary and lower secondary education is mandatory• The municipalities are responsible for the schools and the education• No marks in primary school• No optional subjects in primary school• Foreign languages are optional subjects as from the age of 13• English is not considered a foreign language (mandatory subject from year 1)

Upper secondary school is not mandatory, but everybody has a right to 3 years of education at this level• General studies: 3 years (qualifies for higher education)• Vocational education: 2 years in school and 2 years as apprentice
