Whenartistsappropriateimagery,videoorfilmfootage
theyaretakingexistingmaterialandtransformingitinto
anewartworkoraddingandcombiningitwithother
imagery,videoorfilmfootage.Artistsappropriatefrom
avarietyofpersonal,historical,socialorpoliticalsources
inordertoputthosereferencesinanewcontext.

artwithProf.JamesE.Lewis.Sheisoriginallyfrom
England,andgrewupontheeastcoastoftheU.S.In
herchildhoodshetravelledtotheCaribbeanmany
timeswithherfamily,whereshedevelopedtheloveof
saturatedtropicalcolorswhichareseeninherart.These
travelsexposedhertoforeigncultures,andhelpedher
cultivatethehabitoflookingattheworldfromdifferent
perspectives.Thisisreflectedinherartintheuse
positive/negativeshapeswhichplaywithshiftingfigure/
groundrelationships.
Waters’paintingsandmetalsculpturessuggestthe
energiesandformsofnaturewithoutdirectlydepicting
naturalscenes.Byconcentratingherwillandenergy
intothematerials,theworkattainsavisceralpowerand
vibrationofitsown.
TITLE UltimateRealityShow
MEDIUMSculpture/oxidizedsteel
Anover-sizedweldedsteeltelevisionsetcreatesa
viewingframeforthepublictoobservedailylife—the
“ultimaterealityshow.”Thesculptureisolatesaviewof
theworld,andchallengestheviewertoconsideritina
newway.Thisiconictelevisionsetisbasedonthedesign
ofanantiquemodel,andlacksthesleekfacadeof
modernelectronicdevices.Thecontrols,whicharemade
withpipe,createadditionalportalsthatoffercropped
viewsofreality.Therustedsteelisconstructedtolook
heavyandlayered,withexposedweldsandasenseof
physicalitythatdrawsattentiontothevulnerabilityof
thisrelic.Oneofthequestionsthesculptureasksusto
considerishowourperceptionsoflifearecreatedor
alteredbyviewingtwo-dimensionalimagesonTVand
theotherelectronicscreensonwhichwerely.

JULIE CHRISTENSENJulieChristensenisanaccomplishedartistoriginally
fromKalamazoo,Michigan.In1993,Sherelocatedto
LosAngeles,Californiatopursueacareerinthevisual
arts.AsJuliebegantolaunchhercareerinLosAngeles,
shepartneredwithproductiondirectorstodesignand
createsetsfortheatrical,filmandcorporateevents.As
aresultofherachievementsinCalifornia,opportunities
surfacedacrossthecountry.In1999,Juliedecidedto
callArizonahome,whereshecollaboratedwithinterior
designers,architects,andcustomhomebuildersto
developeccentricwallfinishesandornatemuralsfor
commercialandresidentialclients.WhileinArizona
Juliebegantoincorporatestainedglassintoherart.Ina
twistoffateduringthesummerof2011Juliereturnedto
Kalamazoo,MIandmarriedherlonglostlove.Currently
JulielivesinKalamazoo,MIwhereshecontinuesto
pursueherloveofart.

MEDIUM
StainedGlass
QuanYinisoneofthemostuniversallybelovedof
deitiesintheBuddhisttradition.Sheistheembodiment
ofcompassionatelovingkindness.AstheBodhisattvaof
Compassion,Shehearsthecriesofallbeings.QuanYin
enjoysastrongresonancewiththeChristianMary,the
MotherofJesus,andtheTibetangoddessTara.Quan
Yin,vowedtoremainintheearthlyrealmsandnotenter
theheavenlyworldsuntilallotherlivingthingshave
completedtheirownenlightenmentandthusbecome
liberatedfromthepain-filledcycleofbirth,death,and
rebirth.InthecreationofQuanYinIhand-cuteach
individualpieceofstainedglassandthenlaminatedthe
glassontoasheetoftemperedglassusinganultra-
violetlamp.IthenadornedherwithSwarovskicrystals
andgoldleaf.AfteralloftheelementswereinplaceI
groutedherandputherinacustommadelightboxthat
usesanLEDlightingsystem.

Freedom Bound is a sculpture created by Detroit artist, Charles McGee. It is located on Front Avenue, in front of the Eberhardt Center on the Pew Campus of Grand Valley State University.
