In order to meet the ever-increasing expectations of a 21 st century learning environment, St. Aloysius School is excited to announce plans to expand the science lab into a LIONS’ STREAM LAB. The new lab will be housed in a renovated space that currently houses a computer lab and the media center. After a year and a half of research sparked by the increasing demand from teachers requesting to use the current science lab, the administration and science lab facilitator, Carolyn Murphy, have reimagined the space to better fit the needs of our school community. A very generous donation and grant funding enabled the purchase of additional laptops, iPads and other technology related equipment enabling the technology to be brought into the classroom rather than isolated to the computer lab. Teachers in grades 6 – 8 now have access to check out laptops and iPads for their entire class of students and utilize them in their classrooms. After receiving the blessing of our pastor, Fr. Randy Cuevas and the Parish Finance Committee, Ritter Maher Architects was enlisted to help redesign the current space into an innovative area that will house a maker space and a science lab. The new LIONS’ LAB utilizing the idea of STREAM fosters our mission, “Educating the whole child in the Catholic tradition for a life of meaning and purpose.” This new area will allow students to work on collaborative and innovative projects to prepare them for careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and math with faith and religion at the heart of it all. It will consist of two spaces that can be used independently or in combination to provide a variety of hands-on learning opportunities for all of our students. The science lab side of the space will contain lab tables and science equipment where students can explore scientific concepts and carry out lab experiments. The design lab side will be a creative space with flexible seating to foster creativity and allow students to work collaboratively. In addition to this “think space,” the design lab will also have computers, tools, and materials for students to design, build and evaluate projects. Students in all grades and all subject areas will be able to use this space for hands-on learning. LIONS’ STREAM LAB – COMING SOON! A PUBLICATION OF ST. The Baton Rouge Diocesan Home and School Association established the Mother Seton Award in 1986 to honor individuals who have shared their gifts through exemplary service.   Recipients are recognized for sharing the qualities of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton by volunteering their time, gifts, and talents through service at home, school, and church communities. Mother Seton was the founder of

the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and a pioneer in Catholic education.  She established the first Catholic

elementary school in the United States in Baltimore in 1808 as well as an orphanage in Philadelphia in 1814. Through her life as a wife, mother, widow, and member of a religious order, Mother Seton became an inspiration to others who follow in her footsteps. In 1975, she was canonized by Pope Paul VI.Regina Leonard is this year’s recipient for St. Aloysius School. She demonstrates the qualities of Mother Seton in all aspects of her life. Regina is a quiet, humble leader that prefers to be “behind the scenes,” never serving for recognition even though she has been the chairperson of many events. Her faithful service includes church, school, and community. She leads by example with joy and a positive attitude, organizing teams while working towards a common goal. Her “yes” to support, contribute, or to lead is always an asset to a committee because she will go “above and beyond” every time. We are honored and blessed to have her as such an integral part of our St. Aloysius community.

Our Super Scientist STEM Night was a huge success benefiting our students in Pre-K through 5th grades. The evening consisted of hands-on science, math, and engineering activities for students and families to experience together. It generated excitement in a fun environment for students to learn about liquid nitrogen, exploding bubbles, color chromatography, electricity, geometry, horticulture, engineering designs, robotics, and animals just to name a few. We are GRATEFUL to our financial sponsor, Gulf Coast Bank and all of our participant sponsors who generously shared their time and knowledge:

“We are the eyes, hands and feet for Jesus on earth.” This is how Pre-K teacher Karen Edwards summarized our Christian call to service. The St. Aloysius School faculty and staff had the opportunity to put this call into practice. On Monday, February 4, the faculty participated in a retreat and faculty service day. Becky Eldredge, retreat facilitator and author of Busy Lives and Restless Souls, assisted in creating the retreat, which was a reflection on our Christian call to use our gifts for service to the community. The faculty was inspired by guest speaker, Michael Acaldo, President and CEO of St. Vincent de Paul Society of Baton Rouge. He spoke of his call to service and gave insight into balancing service to family with service to the community. He also articulated the mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and some of the organization’s history.Following Mr. Acaldo’s talk, Deacon Chauvin Wilkerson reminded the faculty that the opportunity for Christian service is always available, from the moment we wake to the moment we go to sleep. All of our choices and interactions with people throughout the day are ways to serve others. After his talk, Deacon Chauvin called the members of the faculty to the Baptismal font, the source of our Christian call to service. The faculty was then blessed and sent out to offer services to the community. The faculty was divided in to groups which provided services to a variety of organizations. After completing their service, faculty members wrote reflections about their experiences.Group 1 helped at Burden Museum, cleaning the historical displays. Susan Davidson remarked, “The curator told us there is not a separate cleaning staff and with an upcoming public event, our service was very much appreciated.” Group 2 stayed on campus, providing help to the St. Aloysius community. They took on the tasks of organizing materials in the school gym and cleaning the shelving and books of the parish library in Gonzaga Hall.Groups 3, 4 and 5 went to St. Vincent de Paul. They worked serving meals in the SVDP dining room, setting up stations

to provide clothing, handing out “Bags of Hope” containing toiletries, and helped serve lunch in the Sweet Dreams Shelter. The experience opened the eyes and hearts of the faculty. As Beth Bordelon wrote, “I was familiar with the organization but astounded by how many people and the ways they serve the population.” Patrice LeJeune commented, “The number of people who needed help was unbelievable-450 people a day, 365 days a year.” “Seeing the small children really tugged at my heartstrings. We take so much for granted,” observed Nancy Dawson.Group 6 inscribed inspirational sayings on bandanas and created tutus for “Girls on the Run.” The bandanas will be given to girls participating in a special group event. Tracey Barhorst remarked, “I loved working for others. I was pleasantly surprised to put my gifts to use in this way.” Group 7 went to the McMains Children’s Developmental Center. The flower beds and planting areas were in need of refurbishing. There was a mound of dirt and a mound of mulch in the parking lot that needed to be moved. At the end of the day, two large beds and multiple planting areas had been refurbished. Group 8 assisted at the Food Bank warehouse, boxing and sorting food items. “I did not know the backpack program existed.” wrote Michelle Dozier, ”I am so glad I was able to be a small part of helping area children in need.” Comments from members of the faculty interpret their experiences of service to the community. “I need to do more good for the world.” “I feel I should move outside my comfort zone.” “I was reminded that our eyes and hearts are not for judging, but for understanding.” “It was a very emotional, even humbling day, seeing the elderly, children and the working poor-all of them with the face of God. It was a day of grace.”

Every year, each Catholic School in the Baton Rouge Diocese recognizes an alum as their Distinguished Graduate. As part of Catholic Schools Week, an awards dinner is held in their honor. St. Aloysius School was privileged to name Mrs. Jane Bayhi Wood as its 2018-2019 Distinguished Graduate. Jane is the director of the Crime Victims Service Division for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff ’s Office, providing assistance to those in need. Jane’s faith has provided a moral compass during her twenty-eight years of challenging work. Her legacy includes improving services for victims, training for emergency room personnel, community outreach, and has established multi-agency collaboration. Additionally, she serves on many boards associated with her work to further impact change.

When asked what Catholic education meant to her, Jane shared, “My Catholic education has stayed with me my entire life. It has not only helped me learn about my faith but has given me a moral compass to decide between right and wrong in a world that has many different opinions. Catholic education has also provided me an opportunity of how to live my life in a way to make Christ’s presence known in the world.”

In the fall of 2011, an anonymous donation in memory of Mr. James Clifton deBrueys was received by St. Aloysius School. Son of Jim and Mary T deBrueys, current St. Aloysius parishioners, James lived most of his life in Kenner, Louisiana. His family moved to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina. After

graduating from Brother Martin High School, he attended LSU where he completed a B.A. in anthropology and a minor in Spanish. At twenty-two years old, he was serving as volunteer teacher through the World Teach Program in the Marshall Islands. While traveling between Arno Atoll and Majuro, his boat was lost at sea. He is greatly missed by all those who knew him. Because James was a young, inspirational teacher who “thought outside of the box,” the donor requested that the gift be awarded to an SAS teacher who incorporated innovative teaching methods in daily lessons. The recipient receives $250.00 to apply to a school project of choice

as well as $250.00 for personal use. This year’s deserving teacher is Stephanie Coxe. She has taught at SAS for 17 years. Stephanie teaches 7th and 8th grade Literature. One of her fellow teachers nominated her stating, “She connects with her students making

learning relevant to their real lives. The students love her and she makes things fun for the kids even when the content may not be their favorite!” For the past several years, Stephanie has taken the lead on the 8th grade service project, reading to the students at Southdowns Elementary School. Southdowns is a Pre-Kindergarten Center serving children of multiple abilities. The 8th graders walk “next door” and visit in the classrooms, reading favorite children’s books to the Pre-K students.Stephanie decided on a very special project that truly honors the memory of James deBrueys. The project extends the 8th graders’ service to Southdowns School. She divided her 8th grade classes into small groups and assigned them the task of writing and publishing a children’s book. Stephanie invited children’s book author, Tracey Koch, and illustrator, Lauren Hawthorne, to speak to the classes about writing and illustrating children’s books. The 8th graders’ published books will be given to Southdowns School. The St. Aloysius School library will also be gifted with a copy of each book written by the 8th graders’. The dedication in the front of each book will read:For James deBrueys who was lost at sea on Thanksgiving Day 2010 in the Marshall Islands. He was a volunteer teacher with World Teach and our inspiration to become authors and serve our community.
