Fire Safety Talks On 4th March, an educaon officer from Kent Fire and Safety spoke to every pupil about the importance of safety procedures in the event of a fire. The talks covered different things for different age groups. Years R, 1 and 2 learnt about 999, Matches and Candles, Smoke Detectors, Stop, Drop and Roll and what to do if you discover a fire. New logo

We will soon be introducing our new logo.

We had lots of fantastic ideas from parents,

teachers and pupils and decided to combine them

to create this shield shaped design.

As soon as we return, we will be switching uniform

provider to Page’s in Maidstone. The change in

uniform will be phased in and there is absolutely

no expectation that parents should immediately

buy items with the new logo. We hope that, when

you get to the point when you require new

uniform, you will find it convenient shopping more

locally or using their website. http://www.pages-

schoolwear.co.uk/

The PTA have agreed to fund the cost of a new PE

shirt, for each child, with the new logo. When we

return, we will ask you to fill in a digital form so

that we can order the correct size for each child.

Fire Safety Talks

On 4th

March, an

education

officer from

Kent Fire

and Safety

spoke to every pupil about the importance of

safety procedures in the event of a fire.

The talks covered different things for different age

groups.

Years R, 1 and 2 learnt about 999, Matches and

Candles, Smoke Detectors, “Stop, Drop and Roll”

and what to do if you discover a fire.

Years 3 and 4 recapped the KS1 information and

then talked about the importance of having a Fire

Plan.

Years 5 and 6 recapped previous safety messages

and then learnt about burns and taking charge of

their own safety.

High 5 Netball

On Wednesday 4th March on a wet and windy

afternoon our intrepid netball team played in a

High 5 Netball tournament held at Weald of Kent

Grammar School Tonbridge. We played 3 matches

against other schools in our local Sports

Partnership and, due to the weather conditions

being so miserable, only the top team in each

group played on.

This was our first competitive netball competition

this year and in the High 5 format all players rotate

positions. We lost our first match against Leigh,

who were tough opposition, but learnt a lot. We

then drew 1-1 against Hildenborough: it was great

to score a goal. In our last match, which was

against Chiddingstone, we lost but felt that overall

our performance had improved.

At the end we were wet and cold but enjoyed the

opportunity to try out the skills that we had learnt

with Mrs Pain, at netball club, in a competitive

situation. We hope to have the opportunity to

play some more

competitive games

of netball in the

traditional 7 a-side

format later in the

year.

World Book Day

Thursday 5th March was World Book Day and so

many children and teachers dressed up to mark the

occasion.

Classes also got together to share their favourite

stories and read to one another.

Charity Cake Sale

After school on the 6th March, thanks to the

generosity of pupils and parents, our charity cake

sale raised just over £130 for the World Wildlife

Fund to support their work in Australia, after the

bush fires.

Author Visit

On 10th March, Nicola Skinner,

author of Bloom, visited Yalding

School to talk to all of the junior

children about her novel and the

process of writing.

The children enjoyed the visit so much that many of

them bought a signed copy of the book.

Shaking Up Shakespeare

Once again, on Friday

13th March, we really

enjoyed a visit from

Anthony Glenn and his

one man Shakespeare

performance. On this

occasion, we learnt about “The Tempest”. Anthony

used several children to help him with the re-

enactment of the story and encourage audience

participation from the KS2 pupils, acting as the sea

and the storm.

After the performance, each KS2 class took part in a

workshops where they were able to experience

Shakespearean style

dialogue and acting.

Our thanks go to the

Yalding Education

Foundation for funding

this visit.

Yalding Gardening Society

Thank you to

many members of

the Yalding

Gardening

Society, who

visited our school

and planted one commemorative tree and 100

hedging plants. The hedge will, in the future

provide screening from neighbouring properties

and a habitat for wildlife. The hedging plants,

which are a mixture of Rowan, Elder, Bird Cherry,

Spindle and Hazel were supplied by

TreeAppeal.com

The tree, a Japanese Acer Maple

which has been planted just inside our

front boundary, complete with

commemorative plaque, was planted

in recognition of all of the community

work which has been undertaken by

Jennifer Raikes.

Year 1 River Project

On Wednesday 18th March, Dolphins Class enjoyed

a visit from members of the South East Rivers Trust.

These activities fitted

perfectly into their

project learning for this

term: Does Yalding

benefit from having

rivers?

The children were able to examine river water

samples and identify river wildlife.

And finally, and most importantly, take

care of each other, keep healthy and we will

look forward to seeing everyone again soon.
