Q. What trends and challenges in the marketplace are driving the need for EDRM technology?A: We’re seeing two major challenges. First, the amount and complexity of data is overwhelming, and it’s growing by the day. Legal teams must quickly access, process and analyze that huge data store from multiple sources and diverse formats like tape drives, email, USB drives, social media and the cloud. Compliance is the second major driver in the marketplace. Rules and regulations in the courts are constantly changing, and the consequences are high if you aren’t vigilant.

Q: What kinds of IT infrastructure components should be considered to support a legal organization’s EDRM solutions?A: Servers and storage are essential. Data requires powerful storage, in a central location, secured and easy to access by team members. The infrastructure should be in place and tested prior to bringing in the EDRM. This ensures that the EDRM solution will run well and at top speed. It avoids the risk of poor initial performance, which can be fatal for internal adoption of the system by team members. A key advantage of working with the CDW Legal Services team is that we have it all under one roof. From infrastructure to software, we bring a big-picture perspective and all the solutions that go along with it, depending on where our customers are in their EDRM implementation.

Q: What’s your best EDRM technology advice for forward-looking firms?A: Make sure you have enough storage to meet future data growth needs. Predictive coding should also be actively considered to further save time and money. Use of predictive coding software is becoming more accepted in the courts as a means to automate the e-Discovery review. It combines technology and workflow processes to search, filter, classify and weed out irrelevant documents based on key search terms and concepts created by the legal team.

Q. What top three tips do you give your customers when they’re looking for an EDRM solution?A. Here’s what I tell them:

1. Don’t do the quick fix. This often turns into a costly mistake. Take a step back. Take a look at the technology; see if it’s the right fit for your firm. Then after thorough research, make the move.

2. Plan ahead for your IT needs, and then budget them in. You can see a good ROI if you have a plan in place that aligns technology with your business goals.

3. Stay up to date on your hardware. Schedule refresh cycles. If you do this, your technology will be readily scalable without straining your budget.
