Tickets £30Dance to the Reel Time Ceilidh Band in the vibrant surroundings of The Hub, one of the fantastic venues featured in Doors Open Day

with its wonderful, dramatic and entirely unique Sculpture Hall, created around a sweeping staircase, leading to the Main Hall with its sprung dance floor. The Dunard Library, a traditional wood panelled room with windows designed by Christian Shaw and walls painted a

rich raspberry, is the bar for the evening with both draft beer and lager available and providing a haven from the dance floor for a wee break.

The Reel Time Ceilidh Band offers a Scottish dancing extravaganza with a contemporary twist. Funky Scottish music along with fun dance calling instruction, they always explain how the dances are performed

(ceilidh calling), to maximise enjoyment and keep some order on the dance floor.

Free bottle of wine for table of 10 when booked together.

The Royal Observatory Edinburgh combines state-of-the-art high-tech facilities and original Victorian observatory buildings in a beautiful hilltop site overlooking the city. On site some of the best telescopes in the world are designed, built and used. Catch talks, demonstrations and exhibits and go behind the scenes at one of the UK’s leading scientific establishments to discover how it contributes to astronomy at every stage in the process from designing a new telescope to using and storing the data produced.

See buildings old and new, all shaped by science and engineering. At the Joseph Black Building, celebrate 300 years of Chemistry

Pentland Hills. The Victorian wing was added c1875 and the interior of the house was renovated in Adam-revival style in 1915. The modern buildings, designed by William Kininmonth in 1964, form a cubist-influenced development with white, harled clear-cut geometric shapes set around courtyards to optimise the light. The superb grounds provide excellent sporting facilities and interesting nature trails.

A 20m high stone tower built to commemorate Sir Walter Scott in 1871, it offers suberb panoramic views to the Pentlands, Trossachs and Fife. Directions from the Clerwood bus terminus: go left (north), along Clermiston Road, for 100 metres, cross and take the gated track, uphill past the old walled garden (also open) on the right to the Tower on top of the hill. The Tower can also be reached from the Cairnmuir Road/Kaimes Road carpark.

The Dower House stands in the NE corner of St Margaret’s Park and has a history going back at least four centuries. It

Murchison House is the award winning Scottish Headquarters of the British Geological Survey, the oldest national geological survey in the world. Join us for the day and find out more of the work of the Survey. There will be a host of activities to suit all ages, covering everything from James Hutton, one of the founders of geology, to the techniques employed in modern geosciences with hands-on displays of minerals, rocks and fossils, demonstrations of mountain building, earthquakes and volcanoes and origins of the Northern Lights.

Sometimes referred to as Gibsone’s Lodge after its late 18th century occupants the Gibsones of Pentland, it is now the home of The Corstorphine Trust. The Church was completed in 1995, incorporating three stained glass windows rescued after a fire in 1993. Solar PV panels were installed on the south-facing roof in October 2011 and raise income through the Feed-in-Tariff. They saved over 6.0 tons of CO2 in the first year and have exceeded the target of a 30% carbon reduction. Energy efficient lighting and video projection of service sheets reduce the energy consumption.

Built in 1904, this category B listed church was designed by P McGregor Chalmers whose links with Iona Abbey are reflected in the nave with clerestory, apses and the curved arches of Romanesque Architecture. Of interest are the stone font and biblical texts carved into the walls. Extended in 1935 by J. Jeffrey Waddell the church and halls are the centre of activity for Blackhall. The organ built by David Hamilton for Old Greyfriars was extensively rebuilt by Sandy Edmonstone.

Tynecastle High School’s impressive building provides a superb working and learning environment while retaining its strong sense of tradition and local identity. The school is extremely proud of both the achievements of its students and the superb facilities, which are widely used by the public. Visitors are amazed by the sense of space, light and colour in the atrium. The flexible working areas are central to delivery of the Curriculum for Excellence while outdoor spaces help inspire creative learning.

The site of Currie Kirk has been a place of Christian worship for over a thousand years. The first recorded church was in 1200. Currie was known as Kildeleith at this time. A new church was built c1300 and extended c1600. The present church was built in 1785 with additions made in 1968. It houses a Knights Templar Gravestone, War Memorials, Cavalry Crosses and many other interesting items. It lies in a beautiful setting and has an interesting graveyard.

Simpson & Brown Architects have designed an innovative, low energy house in Currie that is superinsulated, air-tight and incorporates a mix of renewables. It is compact to minimise heat loss. A heat recovery system circulates heat generated by occupants’ cooking, showering etc. Lifetime standards were adopted to allow for future adaptation with regard to accessibility.

Telford masterpiece completed in 1833. Lawns, paths, trees, and shrubs with lovely views to the weir in the Dean Village and to the St Bernard’s Well. Children’s play area. Entrances: Eton Terrace and Ann Street.

16. ST BERNARD’S MINERAL WELLWaTER oF LEITH aLoNG FRoM SaUNDERS pLaCE, EH12 6ES

‘Taking the waters’ for health was popular in the late 18th century and in 1789 local landowner Lord Gardenstone commissioned landscape artist Alexander Nasmyth to design a well-house based on the Temple of Vesta at Tivoli. It included a statue of Hygeia, the Roman Goddess of Health as part of an idealised Romantic Classical landscape on the Water of Leith. William Nelson the publisher restored the well in 1887, and this hidden gem has been restored again in 2013.

Built against the stunning backdrop of a sheer quarry rock face amongst the rolling hills of Ratho the Arena was the vision of architect David Taylor and keen climbers Duncan McCallum and Rab Anderson. After a change in ownership and a refurbishment, the centre re-opened in 2007 offering not only Europe’s largest climbing arena but also a bouldering room, aerial assault course, soft play, events spaces, gym, spa, cafe and retail units.

The B listed Victorian church incorporates the remains of a pre-Reformation chapel and has been used as a cabinet making workshop since 1979. It is currently the last building left standing in its vicinity due to recent development. In addition to having the opportunity to learn about the building and its surrounding graveyard, staff will be available to talk about their work and the running of the workshop based on traditional techniques and equipment.

The building lies within the lovely Dr Neil’s Garden and sits on the banks of Duddingston Loch. The building now restored houses a Museum of Curling in the lower chamber, and an interpretation room in the upper chamber.

18. THE ROBIN CHAPELTHE THISTLE FoUNDaTIoN, NIDDRIE MaINS RoaD, EH16 4EA

This is a unique, category A listed, Arts & Crafts building built in memory of Robin Tudsbery who died in the Second World War on active service, set within the Thistle Foundation Craigmillar for War Veterans. Windows depicting Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” by the artist Sadie McLellan dominate the chapel with wood carvings of animals and nature study by Thomas Good. 2pm Talks and guided tours of the building; 4.30pm Choral Evensong with the full choir.

14. THE ALLOTMENT HUTINDIa pLaCE aLLoTMENTS, EH3 6TU

In September 2010 Sutherland Hussey Architects were approached by the City of Edinburgh Council with an invitation to design a small meeting hut for a new allotment site in Stockbridge on the edge of a designated World Heritage Site. Opened in 2013 the hut, a wedge-shaped, single volume timber building, now serves as a meeting space for plot holders and outside groups run by India Place Allotment Association. It also serves to promote organic growing and a sustainable lifestyle within the wider community through events and open days.

The Wauchope Mausoleum is a single-storey tomb house dating from 1735 and enclosing a grave slab which dates from 1587. It was part of Niddrie House which was demolished in around 1968. The Mausoleum is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is category B listed.

The Inch Nursery is City of Edinburgh Council’s plant nursery and training centre covering a 10-acre site within Inch Park. Opened in 1982, it produces around a million plants each year. These are used for the City’s parks, gardens, planters and floral displays, including the famous Floral Clock in Princes Street Gardens. Visitors will be able to see behind the scenes of Edinburgh’s vibrant green spaces enjoyed by so many residents and visitors to the City

Once situated within the forest of Drumselch, Inch House has existed in many forms for at least 600 years. Bought by James Winram, Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland around 1617, it then passed to the Gilmour family who retained the house until 1946. Originally built as an L shaped tower with barrel vaulted ceilings, the building retains many of its original features and is now a busy Community Centre. Visitors will learn of a House steeped in history along with stories of its influential owners.

Lyon & Turnbull is a privately owned international auction house based in Edinburgh. Founded in 1826, it is Scotland’s oldest auction house, the largest independent auction house in the United Kingdom outside of London and one of the fastest growing auction houses in the UK. Lyon & Turnbull is based in a neoclassical building, designed by Archibald Elliot and built in 1821. The building was originally Broughton Place Church and some of the original features still remain.

23. NEW CALTON BURIAL GROUNDREGENT RoaD, EH7 5BL

Founded in 1817 by the Incorporated Trades of Calton, the graveyard is characterised by distinctive terraces and a striking south-facing slope that commands outstanding views over Holyrood. The burial ground contains approximately 1000 headstones, high quality monuments, tombs and other structures, including a watchtower, which span the 18th and 19th centuries. This Choragic style of monument commemorates poet Robert Burns through its architectural style; such monuments were built in ancient Athens to celebrate the arts of oratory and recitation. It was designed by Thomas Hamilton to house a statue of the bard by sculptor John Flaxman. Burns’ poetry and song will be performed by members and friends of Edinburgh and District Burns Clubs and the Burns Poetry garden around the monument contains flowers mentioned in his poetry.

Located on Union Street amongst some of Edinburgh’s most beautiful Georgian architecture, Edinburgh Printmakers was originally a washhouse for the local community. With the closure of all public washhouses in Edinburgh in 1971, the premises on Union Street still have many of their original features including the impressive red brick chimney. Community, a beautifully refurbished Georgian building situated in the New Town. The building, purchased in 2005, was refurbished in 2011. The principal rooms retain much of their original fabric including cornicing and marble fireplaces. As well as providing a space for the Bahá’í community to meet, the Centre aims to provide a suitable environment for engaging with wider society on themes of improving community and spiritual life in Scotland.

Originally the home of a small Scottish religious sect the A-listed former place of worship is hidden within the residential neighbourhood on Barony Street. Designed by Alexander Black it was completed in 1835 and has recently come in to the ownership of the Scottish Historic Building Trust. Inside you can get close to the pulpit designed by David Bryce in 1873, the decorative cupola, and sit at the original feast tables at which the Glasites ate and drank.

A Gothic red sandstone Episcopal church designed by Robert Rowand Anderson in the 1880s. Although simple from outside, the chancel designed by John Burnett is glorious, with stunning frescos and a triptych painted by William Hole. The theme is the Te Deum, with the words written round the chancel and continuing into the south aisle. Above this are thirty life size figures depicted in procession leading to the altar, higher still are archangels, evangelists and all the company of heaven.

Two traditional 19th century tenement flats which have been transformed into unusual duplex apartments provide a fascinating insight into very different treatments of an identical physical space. The Fire Service Headquarters opened in 1900 serving as an operational station until 1986. It continues today as an administrative centre and home to the ‘Museum of Fire’. The museum holds ‘James Braidwood’s High Street appliance’ and the last remaining ‘Halley’ fire appliance in the world, which served in Leith. The building also houses a mock-up of an Edinburgh close allowing visitors to experience conditions during the great fire of Edinburgh.

Leith Theatre is located at the junction of Ferry Road and North Junction Street. It was built as part of a civic complex comprising the Library and the Thomas Morton Hall to commemorate the incorporation of the Burgh of Leith into the City of Edinburgh. Holyrood Abbey Church of Scotland has its roots in two nineteenth-century missions begun in the Canongate area of Edinburgh by the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church respectively, though they later rejoined the Church of Scotland. The foundation stone of the present building was laid on 30 September 1899, and the church was opened on 22 December 1900. The 2007 refurbishment project under Malcolm Fraser Architects created a breathtaking view of Arthur’s Seat from the new Church Halls.

Leith Town Hall and Police Station was built in 1828 to designs by R&R Dickson with additions by James Simpson in 1870. The Old Council Chamber was magnificently decorated by Thomas Bonnar in 1892 and used until 1920 when Leith amalgamated with Edinburgh, and remains exactly as when opened. Displayed within the room are portraits of 11 of the 15 Lords Provost who served during that time. The building also has the original prison cells from 1870.

It is an inspiring grand building which was seen as cutting edge design internationally when it opened. This building is to be closed in 2016 when Boroughmuir will relocate to a new school at Fountainbridge. Boroughmuir was the Sunday Times Scottish State School of the Year 2012.

In 1879, Newhaven Station was opened along with other stations built for passenger traffic between North Leith and the Caledonian Station, Princes Street. The railway line closed, with the final train leaving the station on the 28th April 1962. Newhaven is the only survivor of the five Caledonian Railway Stations on the Leith branch line. The aim is to return the building’s external appearance to that of its railway days.

The main part of the building known today as the City Chambers was built in 1753 by John Adam and was called The Royal Exchange. In 1811 it was taken over by the Council as they had outgrown their previous accommodation at the Tolbooth. From 1811 – 1903 the Council met in what today is known as The Diamond Jubilee Room. In 1904 the building was extended to form larger accommodation for the Council which included the Council Chamber, European Room and Members Lounge.

In 1638 the National Covenant was presented and signed in front of the pulpit and in the mid-19th century the first post-Reformation stained glass windows and one of the first organs were introduced into a Presbyterian church in Scotland. Between 1929-38 the historic building was extensively restored and the interior dividing wall between the two former separate sanctuaries was removed. The Peter Collins organ was installed in 1990.

The Newington Collection of paintings includes fine examples of the work of the Scottish Colourists.

A restrained front façade using stone and shingles contrasts with the copper clad playful forms of the courtyard façade.

John Honeyman designed St. Philip’s in an early decorated style and it was completed in 1877, complete with 165 ft. spire. St. Philip’s and St. Michael’s on Slateford Road are the only two churches created by Honeyman to be found in Edinburgh. The building was ravaged by fire in 1998 but the beautifully restored interior mixes old and new. The stained glass windows were designed by Douglas Hogg and won a Saltire Award for Art and Architecture in 2003.

Work on Robert Adam’s original design, begun in 1789, was paused at his death and then completed by William Henry Playfair who combined the two courts of the original design into one great court. He is commemorated through one of the Greek Revival interiors he designed, the magnificent Playfair Library. The contemporary White Gallery was originally designed as a series of chemistry lecture theatres, and the Georgian Gallery, with its neoclassical interior, was originally designed by Robert Adam and completed after his death by William Playfair. The Priory Church was originally built as a Carmelite Friary in 1440 on land donated by the Dundas family close to Queen Margaret’s ‘Ferry Crossing’. The original buildings included a Nave, Tower, South Transept, Choir, Cloisters and Domestic buildings. Of these, the Tower, South Transept and Choir remain today. Monastic use of the building came to an end at the Reformation when the buildings were put to varied local use, parts falling into decay until, in 1890, the remaining buildings were renovated for use by the Scottish Episcopal Church.

Arup first practised in Edinburgh in 1960. Over the next few years, staff numbers increased, occupying several offices throughout Edinburgh. To bring its staff together and accommodate growth, Arup Associates was commissioned to design a purpose built office. The resulting pavilion within the walled garden of the original Scotstoun House was designed principally by Peter Foggo during 1964/65 and occupied in December 1966. Scotstoun House has since been owned and occupied by Arup, which includes the recent refurbishment.

Dalmeny Kirk is the Romanesque 12th century church at the heart of Dalmeny village. It is one of the best preserved Norman parish churches in Scotland and the bestiary carvings and Romanesque columns of the main entrance are of particular architectural merit and are widely documented. The Kirk and churchyard are category A listed and the latter contains a variety of graves and monuments, the earliest dating from 1678.

Built in 1885 as the first public baths in Edinburgh, the Infirmary Street Baths were in use until the 1990s when they fell into disrepair. Following refurbishment in 2009, the building is now home to Dovecot Studios, one of the world’s leading contemporary tapestry studios and an international centre for contemporary craft. Alongside events hire and gallery rental, studio visits and guided tours, there is a Dovecot programme of exhibitions and activities which run throughout the year.

Built on the site of a Roman fort, there have been references to a church in Cramond as far back as 1256. The current building is on the site of its predecessors and its plain cruciform shape can be traced to 1656. Cramond Kirk continues to be a vibrant and well-supported church with strong links to the local community. The graveyard is not only very well maintained but has gravestones dating back to 1608 and a number of Commonwealth war graves.

It is part of a late 17th century inn complex, the inn itself (Royal Oak Inn) having been demolished in the 1970’s. The Maltings is used as an education and exhibition centre while its associated brewhouse stores an archive of local documents, photographs and ephemera. The earliest carbon dated mesolithic occupation of Scotland has been identified just behind the Maltings and the exhibition contains artefacts from then until the present day.

This magnificent steeply-raked lecture theatre, based on that at Padua and still in use, was designed by Robert Rowand Anderson in 1877. The remnants of what was once a three-storey medical museum are now located on the top floor, where historical and contemporary material used by anatomy students is displayed. You will also find an elephant skeleton, a whale’s jawbone and a large collection of death masks of historical figures. 20-minute talks on the hour 11am-3pm.

The history of the site as a seat of learning and innovation dates as far back as the 13th century when it started life as Blackfriars Monastery. As the 18th century ‘Royal High School’ it boasted Sir Walter Scott as its most famous pupil. Later a surgical hospital, since the early part of the 20th century the University of Edinburgh has moved through its corridors in various academic guises.

Teviot Row House is one of several buildings managed by Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA) and is the world’s oldest purpose-built Student Union building. Designed by Sydney Mitchell and Wilson, it was built in a 16th century Scots architectural style with late Gothic features. It has a variety of catering and bar areas, a debating chamber, a dining room, and many other meeting rooms and has recently been refurbished.

The garden chapel, designed by Simpson & Brown Architects, constructed in stone, wood and glass, is situated in the beautiful context of two Georgian townhouses on George Square (1766). The chapel is part of St Albert’s Catholic Chaplaincy serving the students and staff of the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University and Queen Margaret University. The chapel was highly commended in the My Place Awards and won recognition in the Edinburgh Architecture Association and the Scottish Design Awards. Cello recital 6pm Saturday; sung evening prayer at 5.30pm Sunday.

A major redevelopment of all eight floors is now complete, providing library facilities fit for the 21st century. The church building was opened for worship as Rosehall United Presbyterian Church in December 1880. It is category A listed, of Italianate design by Sutherland & Walker and its twin towers form a landmark on the main Dalkeith Road. The stonework has recently been renewed, entrance area remodelled and the interior redecorated following grants by the Church of Scotland, Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund. It contains a very fine set of stained glass windows.

These two churches frame the historic space known locally as “The Causey”. Buccleuch and Greyfriars, C-listed and dating from 1856, dominates the area with its towering steeple. By J, WH & JM Hay, who also built Augustines on George IV Bridge. Chapel of Ease (Graveyard): B-listed and built in 1755-6 as an overflow for St Cuthbert’s, Lothian Road. Its tranquil secret graveyard houses several significant graves plus the unmarked grave of Deacon Brodie.

The church at 88 Lothian Road was originally the United Associate Synod Church and designed by the architect David Bryce in 1830-31 while he was assistant to William Burn. Today, the once boarded-up Church is the home of cultural cinema in Edinburgh housing three cinema screens and a Café Bar that together form Filmhouse. The walls of the Song School are covered with the murals of Phoebe Traquair. Painted over a four-year period from 1888-1892, the murals illustrate a hymn of praise by all creation (Benedicite Omnia Opera). They include religious images, portraits of leading figures of the day and of the choir and clergy of the time, and images of the natural world. The Song School is in daily use by the Cathedral Choristers and therefore public access is normally limited.

Summerhall is an all year round arts venue on the site of the old Royal Dick Vet School. Still retaining a lot of the original features from when it was built, it is a unique space in a central location. The Trades Maiden Hospital houses a unique collection showcasing

the fourteen Incorporated Trades of Edinburgh. Originating in the Fifteenth century most of these bodies are still active today. The Trades Maiden Hospital is the name of their charity, founded in 1704 by Mary Erskine. The current building is the fourth building to house the charity, moving there in 1971. The previous buildings, all demolished, were located in what is now Chambers Street, Rillbank Terrace and the Grange.

Originally known as Drumsheugh Toll the building was designed by George Washington Browne in 1891 as a studio house for the artist Charles Martin Hardie RSA. The Society inhabit the split-level first floor consisting of a recital room overlooking Dean Village and the Water of Leith, a cosy bar, a lounge, an artist’s room overlooking Belford Road, and a small mezzanine room. In the recital room there are Steinway grand pianos and in the artist’s room there is a Zuckermann Flemish V harpsichord.

Designed in 1883 by the architect AG Sydney Mitchell for John Ritchie Findlay, the owner of The Scotsman newspaper. The interior is richly decorated in a Franco-Italian style and was sensitively refurbished and modernised in 2011 by the B+B Collection. It is category A listed and features a spectacular galleried Library and views over the Dean Village.

Built in 1882 the Baths are the oldest private swimming club in Edinburgh. It was designed by Sir John James Burnet in the Moorish style that was favoured in the period for public and private baths. The Pool is 70ft long and remains unaltered with its rings and trapezes over the water still in use. The Club was refurbished in 2005 with new poolside cubicles and retiling of the pool tank and surround.

Built in the early 19th century and first inhabited in 1839, this large house’s notable occupants included the Stevenson sisters (Louisa & Flora) from 1859 to 1908. It was a maternity home when acquired by the French Government in 1945 for the Institute’s establishment in 1946. The Library and Gallery have magnificent views of the Firth of Forth and Dean Valley. Visitors can enjoy an exhibition of photos showing the relationship between city and nature in Edinburgh, on display in the Gallery.

The Old College, by David Rhind, opened in 1855 as Daniel Stewart’s Hospital for 50 destitute boys. In 1870 the Edinburgh Merchant Company turned the Hospital into a fee paying day school and changed the name to Daniel Stewart’s College. The old courtyard at the north side of the building was eventually roofed over and this reopened in 2007 following a multi-million pound rebuild to create a Performing Arts Centre. There are other fine rooms such as the Library, formerly the Chapel.
