THEME OF THE SEMESTER

‘’Throughout the semester, we will address topics and issues of our

human condition such as the notions of self, site and place; and

issues of movement, interactions, perception, and memory as

these and other aspects inform and evoke our spatial

experiences. ‘’

ICE BREAKER

‘’from words to form as an abstract personification of you Consider

this algorithm to carefully craft a phrase that hierarchically best

describes your personal qualities ‘’

Primary: Brightly Evolve

Secondary: Incessantly Adventurous

Tertiary: Artistically Learn

RESEARCH

For my first three Ice Breaker Iterations, I tried to express the form of

flower. For instance, the shape, how they evolve. I tried to use

paper to create the shape because I think paper is the easies

way to represent the shape of flower. (Sunflower)

#1.ICE BREAKER

‘’This is my first iteration in arch 101.’’

STRENGTH: I tried to use a paper to

create a shape of the flowers.

Weaknesses: It’s too simple and it

cannot completely represent the

strength, and it couldn’t create the

shape of the flower.

Page 6: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

#2.ICE BREAKER

STRENGTS:

I tried to use paper to create a curve

shape and I used 3 parts to represent

the three personal qualities, such as

Brightly Evolve, Incessantly

Adventurous, and Artistically Learn. It

had three difference ratio to represent

the primary part, secondary part and

tertiary part.

Improvement-I tried to use the cone shape

and curvilinear element in the second model.

Page 7: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

#2.ICE BREAKER

WEAKNESSIS:

It’s too simple and not attractive enough.

It’s only have one visual point( Top view only).

And I noticed that its only has one element, so I

don’t have enough design language on this

model.

Page 8: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

#3.ICE BREAKER

STRENGTH:

I tried to use two difference colors of

paper(Blue and yellow) to create a contrast.

I cut the yellow color paper to a stripe to

create a woven pattern. It would be more

attractive , because it could see space

within space. And I had successfully

created it.

Page 9: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

WEAKNESSIS: Since by keeping the

same material, paper, it is not strong

enough and it couldn’t maintain the

shape.

EDMOND LEUNG KA HEI NARRATIVE

When people walk around my design looking at different perspective,

they could sense that there are different feelings in different areas and

the structure are changing since they are walking all the way till the

end of my model. I had used different design languages and elements

to try to express my personal qualities, such as sectioning, reputation

and rhythm. In the sketch up model that I had made, I am trying to fully

express my qualities by using different design language. When people

first looking at my model, they will be attracted by the center circle and

shadow of the model. When you look inside from the circle, you will

find some distinguishing features, such as a gradual change on the

circle. It may represent my infinite of possibility.

‘’This was my first time using Google Sketchup.’’ #4.Kit of parts

STRENGTH: Since it was my

first time using Google

Sketchup, I felt so difficult.

However, after I learned some

basic skills, I tried to create a

surface that form by different

shape.

WEAKNESSIS: It’s too simple

Page 12: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

#5. KIT OF PARTS

Improvement form #3:

I tried to use more difference

tools to improve the model. I

was thinking about how can I

create a model that could be

more visualize.

Page 13: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

#6.MODEL OF KIT OF PARTS

STRENGTH: I tried to create a

physical model of my kit of parts

sketch up. By using sectioning

approach, I used two circle to

balance the model.

Improvement: I would like to change

the location where the circle are now

located. (one should be on the higher

section and another should be locate

on the lower level.)

#7.VISUAL MATRIX

By using Google Sketch up, I had

successfully created 16 different

matrixes. Each matrix had their own

characteristic. During the process, I

learned how to use different shape to

create spaces. For example, open space,

enclose space, and space within space.

TECTONIC JOURNEY RESEARCH In this tectonic journey project, I had done a lot of research, for example Jean

Nouvel and Kengo Kuma & Associates . Personally I think the most inspiring

architecture design is the Beijing National Stadium (Bird’s nest). The Bird nest

was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics. And it was made

by steel ,the form of the stadium looks like a big nest which embraces and

nurses human beings. It also related and applied the sense of Biomimetic

Architecture .

Page 17: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

#8. TECTONIC JOURNEY MODEL

Strength: I tried to create a sunshine roof which is located on the

terrace. And I used 3 difference altitude to show the function of

the shied on difference landscape. I used wood to crafted the

frame and I used the thin wood to curve the pattern on the

surface of the shied.

Page 18: Edmond Leung ka hei mid-term porfolio

Weaknesses: No Weaknesses!

That’s the one I like the most and I

successfully combine two difference

material into one. By using wood to

form the shape, I noticed that

curving the wood wasn’t easy. I have

to used different way to make the

wood easier to curve, such as

dipping them into water for a period

of time.

REFLECTION AND LEARNING OUTCOME

From the very first day to now, I was struggling at the beginning, because this

is my first semester and I’m not sure what a design studio class is like.

Gaining the experience by making each model, finally I discovered what I

should create and find my personal style on design.

In our class, there a lot of students who has lots of experience on architecture

design, I was deeply appreciated by their works. And I started to learn from

them and ask questions about the way to create a model which have rich

design language.

Improvement: I should learn more tectonic language to express my own ideas

and the presentation skills. As a architect, learning time management is

important too.
