Steve Maniaci, a new member of LSA as of the September meet- ing, has a very diverse background. He said (quote) “I have a fell- into story! “(unquote) His story goes like this: “I almost did not graduate from Osborn High School! During my senior year in 1974 I was working at a fast-food establishment. Before the end of the first semester my counselor said I was lacking credits to graduate in the co-op program. The counselor recommended the Mirku Lock Com- pany in Detroit as an opportunity to fulfill the requirement. One of my friends recommended a bread-delivery job at $8 per hour and Mirku was only paying about half of that. Mr. Mirku convinced me it was a better career choice than slinging dough. I started as a stock boy. Mr. Mirku tutored me and I learned the locksmith trade very quickly.” “As time went on, the company branched out into door-installation. I became profi- cient and was elevated to the position of Service Manager. By the way “Grandpa” Mirku started his business in 1918! David, his grandson, was heavily involved in the company and in 1975 added electronics to the company. This added another dimension to my learning curve.” During David’s tenure at the helm, he bought and sold J.L.M. Wholesal- ers (they are located in Oxford , Michigan and they support LSA to this day). “A decade later, the grandson phased out of the company and a friend and I bought E.S.S. Mirku Lock Company. The only difference is location. Eleven years later we moved the company to Warren, Michigan where I am now the Vice President in charge of sales.” Steve has been married to Cindy for 16 years and they have five children and live in Shelby Township. PRESIDENTIAL PENNINGS — RAY SINAI, CML

We had a great turnout at our last meeting. September was our first meeting of the 2012 – 2013 season. Jeff Blackford from the Eisen Group, Ken Loffredi from Select Hinges presented. We also had Shawna Carlisi with two representatives from Graphic Payments. Mr. Loffredi explained the benefits and features of the Se-lect Continuous hinges. The group from Graphic Payments addressed merchant payment services. I would like to thank all of these people for taking the time to share information with us. At this time, I would like to welcome three new members to our organization. Welcome: Steve Maniaci, Matt Nadar and Daniel Heffelbower. We are always thrilled to see new faces and hear new ideas that can add to our diverse group of security professionals. Our membership chairman has informed me that we have a number of mem-bers that have already paid their dues. If you haven’t paid your dues yet, please do so. Our organization depends on dues paying members. Our guest speaker this month is Mr. Bob Simpson. Bob is the territory man-ager for Stanley Black & Decker Hardware Home Improvement. He is the local rep-resentative for Kwikset, Weiser, Baldwin and K2 Commercial Hardware. his is a return visit from Mr. Simpson and we are looking forward to it. Again, this month, as last month, we are expecting more presentations from our members. Our in-house Audio /Visual expert William Trout, along with Mark Bickman, CRL have come up with a method to view small items on the big screen. This way the entire audience at the meeting can view a small object or objects that are being discussed at the front of the room. Kudos to Mark and William. I also want to thank numerous others who shared information at the last meeting. Your input is appreciated and we all benefit from it. If you would like to present a topic or a product at an LSA meeting please feel free to contact me. I would like to make sure that it fits into the meeting agenda for the night of your presentation. Our time is limited and the night seems to move quickly. Until our next meeting….

KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH YOUR BUSINESS

RAY’S WAYS — “IN G-D WE TRUST – ALL OTHERS PAY CASH”

VOLUME 26, NO. 2 PAGE 6

Yes, you have heard that before, you know that I didn’t make that up. Yes, being in business is tough. Getting paid seems to be one of the many struggles. Many of the jobs we are called upon to perform are emergencies. Funny, when it comes time to pay, there is no emergency. Why is that? My answer to that question is be-cause we let them. We allow it to happen. I want to tell you one of my “war stories”. I had an attorney who would call me maybe twice a year. The job was always small, under $100. It was usually rekeying a couple of locks due to the parting of an employee. This attorney was always on my accounts receivable list. I would send notices and he would finally pay. Of course, a month or two later he was on the list

again. This game got old. The next time he called, I asked him if he could pay me when I completed the job. Of course, he had to leave the building before I arrived. I pushed and asked if he could leave a check with one of the staff. He was insulted and said that he would call another locksmith and promptly hung up. I peered at the phone and thought “why didn’t I do that years ago”? Who needs this customer? I had spent more time on the col-lections end than on performing the jobs. I now have a weekly meeting with my bookkeeper. At that time we look over accounts receivable among other things. It hit me over the head like a brick. It’s the same deadbeats. The same customers are the ones that are on the list all the time. In other words, the good payers pay well, the slow payers always pay slow. My defini-tion of a “GOOD CUSTOMER” is the customer that pays well. That’s it. There should be no personal feelings or personality qualities involved in this distinction. Again, the good customer is the customer who pays well…on time. Let me ask this question; If you told all your customers that they could pay you when they felt like it, would that be okay with you? Isn’t that what we are telling our customers if we don’t follow up on our receiv-ables? We all have a lot of great customers that pay on time. You must look at these other customers who don’t pay on time. You must decide for yourself what is an acceptable amount of time to wait for payment; 30 days, 60 days, 90 days. If you are waiting over 90 days for payment, you really need to justify this account in your mind. If you have provided materials, I don’t know of any supplier willing to wait 90 days for their money. If you don’t have a bookkeeper, keep an eye on your customers and accounts receivable yourself. The poor payers can get you in trouble. Are they worth it? That is the question. The fact that they may be an old cus-tomer or a friend or heck, you just like them should have no bearing on this. THIS IS BUSINESS, NOT PER-SONAL. Good luck to you all, make lots of money and spend the time enjoying it!

Can You Identify These LSA Members? (answers somewhere in this issue)

#1 #2

Call for Members! Dear LSA Members: I'm trying to modernize the library whereby bringing more members back to LSA and increase meeting attendance. Many members are unable to come to the meetings because they live so far away. Marc Dearing and I came up with an idea that may help. I am requesting volunteers to utilize our new camera at the meetings to make new locksmithing videos from the old tapes in our library. By using the key points in those videos, our talented members can make it happen. Drop me an e-mail at: [email protected] so we can plan. Your time and assistance is appreciated. Thanks, Mark J. Bickman, CRL
