The label "Made in Thailand" appeared ona wide range of products in global marketsis the pride of Thai people and proves thatthey can make quality products for theinternational community. "Srithai Superware",a brand that has long been recognized fordelivering quality products bears this label tosatisfaction to many people around the world.

S u p e r w a r ecan be regardeda s o u r g r e a t e s tsuccess. Another thingwe are proud of is thephrase "Made in Thailand" onour exported products which weare the first company who put thisphrase on products. How will the markets of Superware be in the nextfive years? How will Srithai Superware grow in thefuture?Mr.Sanan : With regard to melamine product, wehave the biggest production capacity in the world.Over the next five years Srithai Superware will notonly be the Biggest in the world, but also the WorldLeader in melamine products. This means that we

"Srithai Superware" is a brand that has been the prideof Thai people as it refers to the plastic and melaminekitchenware existed worldwide. We, therefore, interview Mr. Sanan Angubolkul, Chairman andPresident of Srithai Superware Public CompanyLimited, about the company's 45 years of proudsuccess. How did the Srithai Superware start and movetowards its success?Mr.Sanan : The logo that we use and everyoneremembers is the penguin and our brand name is"Superware". We started producing plastic productsfor household kitchen long time ago and we laterexpanded to melamine products which were warmlyreceive by customers around the world. Products'popularity and customers' familiarity with the

must reorganize our work processes. We mustdevelop our own production technology, designsand expand to other groups of products such assouvenirs and toilet seats made of urea which usethe same production processes as melamineproducts.Today we have 80% of market share in the localmelamine market. For Overseas, we expect topenetrate into 100 countries this year. We haveinvested in China for 20 years and run two factoriesin Beijing and in a bordering area with Mongolia. We also have production bases in Indonesia andVietnam. Next year we will invest in India and expandto the Persian Gulf. With regard to plastics we aim to be a leader intechnology. We are actively developing our

technologies to be a world-class innovators. We arethe first company in Asia to use robots in our workingprocesses which will increase our productivity.Does Srithai Superware also produce melamine forEuropean and American companies such as IKEA?Mr.Sanan : IKEA has placed orders to us and ourproducts will be delivered to all IKEA branchesworldwide. We have just started production for IKEA thisyear. IKEA has never sold melamine products beforeand they chose us because of our product's quality, production processes and management. We are soproud that we are trusted by the world-class company. How has Srithai Superware coped with rising fuelprices and the economic recession?Mr.Sanan : Plastics price has been soared and caused200 to 300 plastic factories to suspend their production. In the meantime, the prices of plastic products did notincrease. For melamine, its prices never edged upalmost a decade but it has just skyrocketed at late lastyear because China copies our products. Theycombined melamine with urea which made a non-heatresistant. Consequently the government banned theexport of these products. All parties then rushed to buymelamine and when there was a shortage, its priceshot up. So we took orders only for which we couldacquire raw materials. At the moment, the prices of rawmaterials have been dropped so we can purchase rawmaterials for our production. So, we don't need to stopour machines.

What will Srithai Superware do tomark its 45th anniversary?

Mr.Sanan : We may notorganize any special eventfor ourselves but wouldrather conduct CSRactivities. We will, forexample, contribute toeducation, religionsa n d c o n s t r u c t i n g

p a t i e n t r o o m s a tRamathibodi Hospital.

Last November we had anopening ceremony for ournew modern, hi-tech building

and invited our important customers to join to makethem confidence that we would never stoppedimproving. We also keep continuing on our corporate socialresponsibility activities such as building borderpatrol police schools, awarding scholarships, andstudying a new way to keep our environment goodas it is such as recycling plastics then make plasticpallets to be used instead of wood. We are studyingabout bioplastics as well.Could you tell us about your collaboration with SCGChemicals?Mr.Sanan : We are SCG Chemicals' first customerand we have been purchasing raw materials from thecompany. Our relationship is great - They supportedus in human resources development which is one oftheir professional fields by sending their training teamsto train our staffs, advising and installing system. Theyalso provide us with technical information withregular visits from their technical service teams. Theteams give advice and provide us with knowledge. When SCG Chemicals has updated information onnew developments from overseas, they usually passon this useful information to us so that we candevelop our organization. With regard to rawmaterials, SCG Chemicals regularly improves theirquality and always make a pretest. The words "PL Law" stands for "Product LiabilityLaw" or referred to as the "Product Liability Act". The PL Lawbecame effective in Thailand on February 20th, 2009 and itis important to every Thai individual either as a consumer oras a business operator. So this issue of "All Around Plastic"would like to introduce details and some significant pointsrelevant to the PL Law.

unintentionally or by negligence. Manufacturers orbusiness operators must, therefore, incur any resultingdamages. The law underlines the liability of businessoperators for unsafe goods while the old law only tookintent or negligence into consideration. The more importantis, according to the PL Law principle, even thoughconsumers do not purchase those products, but if theconsumers suffered hazardous impacts from thoseproducts they may sue the business operators. Thisexempts "Party of the Agreement" ruled by general law."Could you please explain the term "Could you please explain the term "Could you please explain the term "Could you please explain the term "Could you please explain the term "PPPPProducts" androducts" androducts" androducts" androducts" and"Unsafe Products"?"Unsafe Products"?"Unsafe Products"?"Unsafe Products"?"Unsafe Products"?

"According to the PL Law, "Products" include all kinds ofmoveable assets-goods, that is, properties that can bemoved from one place to another, including agriculturalproducts and electricity while service businesses areexcluded. The term "Unsafe Products" in terms ofPL Law has 3 types of meaning, which are:

1) Design Defect, which means that manufacturerscould have made their products safer but they neglectedto do so. For example designing a chair with three legsinstead of four. In designing a four-legged chair, thechair will be strong and stable. In practice, customers'expectations must be incorporated into the designprocess.

2) Manufacturing Defect, which means that theproduction process is differed from the designspecification to the extent that consumers are sufferedits hazardous impact. For example, a chair might beproduced according to a four-legged design, but oneleg is not properly secured with a screw or nail, thusweakening the chair's strength.

3) Inadequate Warning: this point generates aconcern over the lack of details of the operation manuals, and unclear or insufficient warnings of product labelsthat is to the extent that damage is caused to consumers;such warnings under PL Law must be in a style wherebyany individual must be able to understand it, or it isreferred to in the international law as a "Foolproof" warning.Odd warnings which are considered unnecessary bysome are found in the product labels in many othercountries. Such cases include warnings of "no animalsshould be put in the microwave" or "the coffee is hot".These warnings are reminders that a label must cover allaspects so that consumers with peculiar habits and lowstandard living can use the products safely."

The core principle of PL Law or Product Liability Law is toprotect consumers from unsafe products by requiringbusiness operators to pay compensation for consumerssustaining damage resulting from consumption or use ofunsafe goods. The law will require business operators andproduct manufacturers to exercise caution and prudencewhen manufacturing any products because businessoperators are liable for the unsafe products irrespective ofintent or negligence. It also enables users and non-users ofthose products who have sustained damage resulting fromthose unsafe goods, inclusive indirect buyers, to file a legalaction, which has taken away the limitations of the old law.Khun Kitti Tangjitmaneesakda, Managing Director of SCGLegal Counsel Limited, who has extensive expertise andexperience in Public Law, told us about the essence of thislegislation. He stated:"The essence of this PL Law is that it protects consumers, while business operators must take their strict liability, which is referred to in an international law as "StrictLiability". This means manufacturers must be responsiblefor damage caused to consumers even if i t is

Business operators have to assume liability under PL Law,dividing into 4 groups;

1) Manufacturers including those who hire suchmanufacturers to produce products

2) Importers3) Sellers, who will assume liability only if the

manufacture, hirers of manufacture or importer cannotbe identified

4) Users of any trade names that mislead otherpersons to understand that they are manufacturers, employers of such manufacturers, or importers.

distribution not only on quality and price. If any businessoperators can do this, they will be freed from liability fromthis law.To achieve this, business operators should have a strictquality control system starting with designing the product, recording the suppliers who supply raw materials, checking the quantity of each order, and examiningmaterials quality before beginning of the production. Oncethe materials have been processed into a final product,a lot number should be fixed. A sample test must becarried out to ensure the quality of the products and arecord should be kept of where each lot of products aresold. In most cases, large organizations usually have agood system of quality control, whereas smallmanufacturers will probably have to start dealing withtheir quality control so as to prevent any possible lawsuit. However, no mater how effective a quality control systemis, a lapse of unsafe goods could occur. Thus clear andproper warnings should be specified. The warning shouldbe "Foolproof" from the consumer's point of view, not thatof the business operators as the latter often think somewarnings are common sense that should beacknowledged by consumers themselves and there isno need for a warning. In practice, business operators should be well preparedto be in compliance with the PL Law by following theseguidelines:

1) Manufacturing only safe products, paying attentionto every process of the operation, taking safety intoconsideration in designing, and having the quality controlsystems in place, for example, the quality control ofproduction processes and to conduct the product testing

2) Warnings, product labels and operation manuals, must be indicated with clear and sufficient details, andmust be available

3) Marketing activities, promotional media andadvertisement must not be exaggerated.

4) Setting up a complaint center for a quickresponse to consumers

5) Entering into contracts with other business-relatedparties, such as, suppliers of raw materials, so that theyalso assume responsibility if the lawsuit is filed

6) Acquiring the PL Law insurance to lessen someof the burdens.

7) Setting up record system to keep all data of theproducts, for example, designs, testing results, andrecords of sales which may be needed in case of alawsuit. In addition to the preparation as mentioned above, KhunKitti also recommended a business operator, whether alarge or a small organization, to have a team to be in chargeof any matter relevant to the PL Law. Members of this teamare to consider risks of the product and come up with a planto manage those risks, set up a complaints unit, establish amore thorough process of manufacturing products andservices and take care of documentation relevant to theproduct. This is in order to prevent any possible complaintfrom consumers.

Khun Kitti even gave more aspects of the PL Law saying:Under the PL Law, if a dispute arises, the damagedparty has less burden to prove the damages whencompared to similar laws in other countries as the lawindicates that the damaged party only present proof ofdamages caused by the unsafe products. The burdenof proof beyond this is put to the business operator whomust prove to the court that 1) the product is safe; or 2)the person sustaining the damage has accepted the riskand is aware that the product is not safe; or 3) the personsustaining the damage has used or stored the productinappropriately and different from what stated in thewarning which is clearly specified by business operators."Could you please give some advice to businessCould you please give some advice to businessCould you please give some advice to businessCould you please give some advice to businessCould you please give some advice to businessoperators sooperators sooperators sooperators sooperators so they can get themselves ready and canthey can get themselves ready and canthey can get themselves ready and canthey can get themselves ready and canthey can get themselves ready and canbe prevented from being be prevented from being be prevented from being be prevented from being be prevented from being sued sued sued sued sued under the PL Law?under the PL Law?under the PL Law?under the PL Law?under the PL Law?

I believe that PL Law legislated with a good intentionbecause it protects consumers and also helps to upgradethe safety standards of product manufactures anddistributions in Thailand to be on a par with internationalstandards. As a result, it allows us to compete with muchmore confidence in the world trade arena. The law affectsbusiness operators both directly and indirectly as it willnow be easier for consumers to file a lawsuit and allowthem to seek more compensation whereas businessoperators have limited exempts for responsibilities. For the prevention of a lawsuit, I would like to recommendthat business operators should make sure to producesafe products for consumers by adhering safety issuesin every process starting from design, production and

26000, which expected to be announced in 2010byTISI," said Mr. Taywin Somngam, CSR Manager ofSCG Chemicals, who added that the CSR-DIWstandards comprise seven core issues:1. Organizational Governance 2. Human Rights3. Labour Practices 4. Environment5. Fair Operating Practices 6. Consumers Issues7. Participation in Social DevelopmentMany of those issues had long been practiced bySCG Chemicals. However, participating in the CSR-DIW Project helped the company to view the overallpicture in a more systematical way and assisted onstraightening out its weak points.

as most of them are benevolent by nature whencomes to providing for the society," Mr. Taywin said.Social activities of SCG Chemicals were very diverse. They involved education, improvement of the qualityof life, and environmental protection. For example, new employees were sent to tutor in English andMathematics to the children that were about to takea university entrance examination. Training class onadditional occupations was provided to thosefulltime housewives as well as a class on how tokeep a book of account. Mobile medical and dentalunits were provided to the community. Waterbarrages were built. Vetiver grass was grown andwastewater was treated. The latest project that was implemented at the endof 2008 was the building of a wastewater treatmentsystem at Ban Nopphaket village in Rayong whichwas in relation to His Majesty the King's Concept.About 100 families encountered a flooding fromexcessive wastewater from the increasing numberof households. The project only involved a smallamount of money. It comprised of a construction ofa sludge and a wastewater swamp that functionedas cultivation for plants that gave out oxygen andtreated the wastewater. The treated water would thenbe used to watering grass and trees in theneighboring areas.Aunt Siphrae Khanthasan, a resident living in thecommunity for more than 10 years, was glad to knowthat SCG Chemicals had paid an attention to theimpacts occurred in the community and assisted insolving the problems. Aunt Siphrae said: "Thisproject is good. It prevents water from floodinghouses and also makes the smell of wastewaterdisappeared."The project of building a wastewater treatment systemfor the community was designated as a project trulyemerged from the cooperation between theorganization and community. SCG Chemicals providedtechnologies and construction materials, and thecommunity provided construction skilled workers.Last year, 60 per cent of SCG Chemicals employeesparticipated in such voluntary activities. This washigher than the expected target of 50 percent eventhough it was the first year of CSR presence. Thisyear the unit has set the target at 75 percent of totalemployees. Employees families will also have theopportunity to participate in the activities.Mr. Taywin is confident that the social responsibilityworks have become more and more important andshould be continued in the business conduct forthe purpose of enhancing its operation so it wouldbecome acceptable worldwide."The CSR duty under SCG Chemicals does notgenerate any income for the organization, but it willhelp the organization to be able to conduct its businesssmoothly in the future under the philosophy of 'adherenceto social responsibility'," Mr. Taywin said.

Mr. Taywin said that it would have been difficult to bethis successful without the company's existing"Social Responsibility" policy, which was laid downas a fundamental business principle for all membersin SCG Chemicals. Its environmentally friendlyoperational procedure, and those long createdsocial activities that came in various forms, wasalways well supported by high-level executives. To be more efficient in its social work, early last year,SCG Chemicals formed the CSR unit to exclusivelyoversee this specific area of work for all members inthe Group, making it one of few organizations thatpurposely established the CSR unit."The social responsibility effort of SCG Chemicals, whichhad previously been carried out, was by then anoutstanding success not only because we gave outmoney to support community activities, but because wealso focused on having our employees join in several ofthose activities that aim to develop the community," Mr.Taywin said. The CSR team meets up with people of thecommunity regularly to listen their problems as wellas their recommendations to solving the problemsand then formulate a guideline for activities thatcorresponded to the community's requests. Activitieswere then announced to the employees foracknowledgement so that they could participate inthose according to their interest."We did not have to try that hard to invite ouremployees to participate in those voluntary activities

It is well known that good logistics canhelp promote business success. Realizingthe importance of logistics, SCG Chemicalscontinuously develops new services toimprove this particular area of the business. The latest initiative is to deliver its productsusing recycled plastic pallets - better knownas Palletized Delivery - resulting in a betterservice for customers and companies withinits conglomerate.Delivery process used to involve a number of workersloading 25-kilogram of loose bags onto trucks andthen stacking them up manually. At customers'factories, those bags then had to be unloaded andrestacked. This method consumed both time andlabor and the bags were often damaged from collisionand falls. With the new transportation system, 12 layersof cargoes are piled up on pallets and fastened withstretch wraps. Each pallet weighs 1.5 ton. The palletsare then loaded and unloaded conveniently with afork-lift truck. Two cargo-bearing pallets can bestacked up thus significantly reducing storage space.Mr. Narong Chaiyawong, Logistics DevelopmentManager of SCG Chemicals, recalls how the newtransportation method began.

"SCG Chemicals implemented Palletized Deliveryin the late 2007. A team of logistics staff was sentto introduce the new delivery system to customers. The staff surveyed the readiness of customers andalso helped them prepare for the delivery method. In 2008, the system has been expanded and served10% of all customers."By implementing this method, Palletized Delivery hasreduced delivery costs by 7% per trip and shortenedthe time of loading up by 40% which is from 45minutes to only 20 minutes per vehicle. At customers'

factories, the time of unloading decreases from oneto two hours to just 30 minutes per vehicle. Since then, there was less complaint about the loss of plasticpellets and broken packages. To accentuate the advantages of the service, in thisissue of All Around Plastic, we have conducted aninterview with two customers who benefit from SCGChemicals' new delivery system. The first customer is Naraipak Co., Ltd., the leadingmanufacturer of polyethylene bags for domestic andoverseas markets. The Company's President, Mr.Chavalit Dulayakometh mentions the merits of thenew transportation method."Palletized Delivery makes cargo handling muchneater. It is convenient and quick and considerablysave time and labor to unload cargoes. To countand store cargoes are also fast and virtually free ofdamage. Our staff can acquire materials muchfaster from storage space because they can movethe whole pallets that bear raw materials. It doessave time and labor."

⌫⌫

Page 23: Editor’s Note - SCG Chemicals

23√Õ∫√—È«æ≈“ μ‘°ALL AROUND PLASTIC

Mr. Chavalit also recommends delivery improvementas follows."I would like to see a better system of the service. Servicestandard should be maintained in the long run, deliveryappointments should be managed well and thereshould be regular coordination between SCGChemicals and customers. And if it is possible, I wouldlike to see the pallets that compatible with hand pallettrucks. I believe they will increase efficiency.""In my opinion, SCG Chemicals takes very good care ofcustomers. A complaint is responded to promptly andimpressively. This is important as nowadays businesscooperation will finally result in mutual success."

staff who mix plastic pellets could not work as fastas they should be, because plastic pellets couldnot be delivered in a large amount each time. Todaythey can work faster because plastic pellets canbe carried on pallets. This means they can finishtheir work on time and thus have more time to rest.Besides, it is more convenient and faster for us tocheck our inventories."As SCG Chemicals keeps on developing newservices and deploying its teams to take care ofand cooperate with customers, our problems aresolved more quickly. When we run out of materials, they are always delivered just in time. Moreimportantly it always provides an update informationand knowledge which significantly benefitscustomers. I think this is the sustainable cooperationthat can lead both sides to success."After the introducing of Palletized Delivery, SCGChemicals regularly receives suggestions andcomments from customers which help its logisticsdivision learn how to improve the system to betterserve customers. For example, Mr. NarongChaiyawong, Logistics Development Manager ofSCG Chemicals, shares his ideas on a problemconcerning untidy stack of products on pallets:"In the future, the logistics division will replace stretchwraps with stretch hoods which are stronger andwill ensure neat stack of products on pallets."SCG Chemicals never stops improving its servicesto grow together with customers. This is why it is theleading company in plastic manufacturing.Palletized Delivery is new and also a free service. The company does not charge or demand anydeposit for the pallets that carry the cargoes and arekept in customer's storage space. The fine will onlybe imposed if pallets are damaged or lost. AlthoughPalletized Delivery could obviously increases logisticefficiency, it might not be able to all customersbecause some customers have limited space forcargo handling.Customers who can benefit from the new methodof transportation must be ready in terms of the storagespace which has to be wide enough for a fork-lift truck.Customers should also have a fork-lift truck. However,if customers have enough space but doest not have afork-lift truck, SCG Chemicals can recommend a rentalfork-lift truck to customers. For further information on Palletized Delivery, pleasecontact Mr. Visooti Viboonpongs, Analyst-LogisticsDevelopment of Thai Polyethylene Co., Ltd. at 02 586-4857 or via E-Mail address: [email protected]

Another customer of SCG Chemicals that took onPalletized Delivery and has been using the systemfor some time is Sunee Industrial Plastic Co., Ltd.which produces "Star" plastic bags. The companyhas together tested and improved the PalletizedDelivery with SCG Chemicals. The Company'sManaging Director, Mr. Mungchun Sungwanmanoncompares Palletized Delivery with conventionaltransportation:"The Palletized Delivery of SCG Chemicalssignificantly reduces the time for cargo receiving, from about 40 minutes to only 10 to 15 minutes pertruck. We receive as many as seven to eighttruckloads of plastic pellets from SCG Chemicalsevery day. The new transportation system does notwaste our time anymore, as before it used to takealmost a day to unload."The new delivery service benefits customers as Mr. SuntiSungwanmanon, Deputy Managing Director, confirms:"The Palletized Delivery also saves time for movingplastic pellets from the warehouse. Movie fans may recall a scene from the1989 film Batman in which the notoriousJoker showers money over Gotham City towin citizens' hearts amid economicdoldrums.Putting money into people's pockets reflects the ideaof Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedmanabout using a "helicopter drop" to put money intothe economy to tackle liquidity problems. This concept of giving money as a gift is beingapplied vigorously by many governments to spurlocal consumption and investment which have beenstagnant due to the collapse of the US financialmarkets. The scheme aims to put money directly into thehands of the people. Policymakers believe thatreceivers will spend the cash rather than keep it assavings and argue that it is an effective way tostimulate the economy.President George W. Bush last year signed aneconomic stimulus package by paying income taxrebate checks of $300 per person to tax payers and$600 for married couples that filed tax forms jointly. The cheques were mailed in April last year.In Taiwan, everyone obtained shopping vouchersworth NT$3,600 (3,740 baht) from the governmentheaded by Premier Liu Chao-shiuan. The Santika inferno, which claimed 66 livesand injured hundreds, was a tragic andhorrific start of the New Year for Thais. Itwas partly a result of the owner's ignoranceof fire precautions and leniency from policeand government officials to enforce thoseprecautions. Fire incidents in Thailandfrequently occur and, hopefully, the terribletoll from the Santika blaze will prompt thegovernment, private sectors and the generalpublic to prioritize fire prevention standards.

retardant fibres and fireproof materials.Flame-retardant materials don't providefurther fuel for a blaze. When in contactwith fire, flame retardants that coat theproducts will turn into black char andprevent the products from catching fireeasily. Flame retardants are usually usedwith cloth, fabrics, curtains, wood and paper.

In Thailand there are many textilecompanies that produce and exportfireproof curtains including Satin TextilesCo. Ltd., Jong Pattana Co., Ltd., and TTL

In other countries, especially those in the EuropeanUnion, governments pass laws that requireresidences, houses, hotels and buildings to usefireproof curtains instead of normal curtains whichare highly flammable. Cotton, linen and syntheticfabrics easily catch fire unless they have beenmodified to be fireproof. To make it even worse, whensome of these unmodified curtains burn, they emittoxic gases which can be fatal if inhaled.Fireproof fabrics can help stop fire spreading. Rigidfire-precaution laws have prompted thedevelopment of several fireproof materials.Advanced technology is used to develop flame-

science of the Royal Gold Jubilee PhDProgram (RGJ) at the Petroleum andPetrochemical College, ChulalongkornUniversity.Fireproof fabrics may be slightly moreexpensive than normal fabrics. However, with regard to safety, the slightly highercost is worthwhile for people who valuetheir lives and the safety of others.

⌫⌫⌫ ⌫⌫⌫Whether you want to delve into some fascinating history, wanderthrough an untouched jungle, marvel at a wonderful variety ofmarine life or just relax on a pristine beach, the Tarutao MarineNational Park in Satun province offers them all.The marine park is a group of 51 islands in the Andaman Sea, covering an areaof 1,490 square kilometers. Koh Tarutao is just 5km from Malaysia-Thailandborder. From 1938 to 1948, the government used the island as a prison tohouse both violent criminals and political prisoners. This prison was closedlater on due to the lack of medicine and food supplies, which left 700 inmatesperished from malaria and the former wardens turned to piracy and weresuppressed by the government in the end.Tarutao was overhauled years later and listed as Thailand's eighth nationalpark in 1974. UNESCO included the park on its list of ASEAN Heritage Parksand Reserves in 1982. The park has reserved the prison area at Aow TaloWao for a historical site. Tarutao also has a nature trail. Visitors can climb a800-metre high hill to see flora and fauna and enjoy glorious sunset.Koh Tarutao is a haven for nature-lovers, snorkelers and scuba divers, thanksto its crystal-clear, turquoise-tinted water and its abundance of marine life.Within a day, visitors can enjoy diving at several spectacular spots. The highlightsare at Koh Phai and Koh Phung where divers can view colorful soft coral invarious shades: red, purple, green and pink. There are also many types of hardcoral reef, sea anemone and starfish. If you're not a fully-fledged scuba diver, youcan also enjoy seeing the wonders of moray eels, spiny lobsters and schools ofcolorful fish in their natural habitat.Koh Hin Ngam is another beautiful landmark. Its beach is peppered with rocks ofvarious sizes that have been worn smooth by wave action for millions of years. Those who like white sand beach will love Koh Rawi. For those seeking nightlife,Koh Lipe, 40 kilometers west of Koh Tarutao, is an option for an overnight stay. There are plenty of privately-run bungalows, pubs and bars in its Pattaya Songbeach. Those who enjoy solitude can stay at Lipe beach or hop to Koh Adang, opposite to Lipe. Koh Adang's natural beauty remains untouched and food andaccommodation are very affordable. Islands of Tarutao Marine National Parkoffer a wealth of natural beauty, fascinating history and nightlife - a trulysomething for everyone.

Her expensive bag was ultimately thrown away asjunk. But the memory that she helped the childremained refreshing and fulfilling. It is this sense ofmeaning and fulfillment that makes us happy, researchers said.Buddhism teaches us that money and wealth is afactor on the path to happiness - if we adopt theright approach to it."Let money and material things serve us towards ournoble purposes in life, to improve our livelihood andspiritual growth''. This maxim can guide us to spendand give wisely. But what kinds of things and services should wespend our money on to help promote our well-beingand spiritual development? Before we pay for something or sign a cheque, perhaps we could stop and ask ourselves: "Will thismoney help better our life, promote our health orgive us genuine happiness?" If the honest answerfrom the heart is "Yes", then go for it.In helping others and giving donations, to our family, friends and society, also ask the same question: "Willthis money help the recipient to have a better lifeand become happier?" If "Yes" is the answer, thenwe should give away some amount that will not putus at a financial risk afterwards.Wealth and well-being can go hand-in-hand if wecultivate the wisdom to spend it for the long-term andattain genuine benefits for ourselves and others.

Many people believe that money can buyhappiness, and why not? We enjoy ourshopping, expensive food and drink andother luxuries so much so that the bliss ofhappiness can seem very real. But does having lot of money make us a happy andhealthy person?Recent international research on attaining happinessdrew the conclusion that money can't really bring ushappiness unless we give it away."Givers beget happiness" goes the teaching in manyreligions. Giving includes time, advice, knowledge, forgiveness, as well as money and material things. In giving away money, we transform its monetaryprice into values that can fulfill others, yet we alsoearn happiness over time.Knowing that just five baht can provide a decentlunch for a rural pupil, a young urban womandonated 150 baht each month to support the lunchprogram for students in a rural area. The money thatcost a two-hour movie ticket could also mean a happymeal of many starving children. This donation was miniscule compared to the pricetag of her luxurious brand-name handbag. However, the meager sum gave her more joy than her designerhandbag. She was happy whenever she recalledthe happy face of the boy eating lunch which, to her, ensured the child's health and nurture him to learnand play well at school.

For many people, commercial plastictechnology and dazzling artistic creationseem to be at odds. Is it possible for themto work together as one?The SCG Foundation posed this question andinvited its alliances, which are the four business armsof Siam Cement Group (SCG) responsible forCement, Paper, Ceramics and Chemicals toorganize the "SCG Artist and Designer Workshop2008" to find the answer.Twenty art teachers from several educationalinstitutes as well as designers and freelance artists

the factory of SCG Chemicals Co., Ltd. in Rayongprovince. Staff of SCG Chemicals supplied plasticpellets of various types as well as small tools thatcould be used instead of industrial machineries. These included rotisseries, welders, blowers andmould ovens. The staff taught the artists on how touse the equipment and they also learned about theproperties of different plastics. The artists had realsamples of plastics so that they could feel thematerials before creating their works. In the workshop, improvisation was the key to theircreations. The artists were to create their works outof the materials before their eyes. Yet, some artistshad already formed ideas for their creations, such

participated in the two-day pilot project thataimed at allowing art and industrial materialsto converge, leading to creativity andinnovations for both artistic and industrialcircles. As the idea of the convergence is new, both the host and the artists had todo their pre-work. The artistsneeded to have the basicknowledge of plastics andstudied the information thatSCG had provided. Meanwhile, organizers had to find mouldingmethods that the artists coulduse without the use of heavymachinery, but with a certaindegree of safety. On the first day of the workshop, the artists touredplastic pellet factories to gain an understanding of

the process of plastic pelletsproduction and howthey are turned intoproducts. The tourdrew a lot of attentionfrom the artists. The second day wasthe real workshop at

as Assistant Professor TakerngPattanopas from the Departmento f Indust r ia l Des ign, Facul tyof Architecture, ChulalongkornUniversity."I used plastic and silicone in some

of my works," Professor Takerng said."In this workshop, I will look formaterials with different properties from

what I used to employ."Professor Takerng has been working

under the concept of human "Space" formore than 10 years and is always looking for

the materials that make his works look more likehuman tissues and inner organs."As far as people in general are concerned , plastic

highly represents industry, innovation and technology, notof the nature. I try to challenge this perception," he said. Some artists collected plastic waste pendingdisposal to create a work. One picked up a treebranch and composed it with plastic. Anothercreated patterns with perforations. Lecturer TinakornKasornsuwan created a free forms pattern and justplaced them into the oven. "I think of the dessertsthat must be in the oven, so I just lined the plasticpellets as if they were desserts," he said.

Rungruang, a Product Development Engineer ofSCG Performance Chemicals Co., Ltd. who was themain organizer of the activity, said: "When our teamreceived the assignment, we spent a long timelooking for suitable activities because the generalpublic think this industry focuses only on usingtechnology and machines to mould and produceproducts that are mainly commercial products. It isvery different from a unique work created by an artist.""Observing their work and sharing knowledge withthese artists, I gain new ideas that will help us thinkmore outside of the box. We are inspired to designnew products for the plastic industry and to introducenew choice of raw materials for artists to createtheir works," Mr. Pakpoom added.

Apart from teachers, youngparticipants also shared their views.Mr. Aroonsak Puttanagulanun who won the YoungThai Artist Award in 3D art in 2007 said: "This activityis more impressive than I expected. It leads to manynew ideas. The production process is not difficultand can be done at home. Normally I work with steel.I think I would try plastic in the future because it ischeaper, rust-free and gives out atypical feelings.Rusty steel generates withering feel, but plastics arecolorful and vivid. They can be developed into theproducts that could generate incomes."While the artists gained new experiences, the SCGChemicals staff members who shared theirknowledge and facilitated the workshop alsogained some new perspectives. Mr. Pakpoom

All of the artists enjoyed creating their works andwere excited with the effects and the textures theymade. Associate Professor Kanya Charoensupkulfrom the Department of Graphic Arts, Faculty ofPainting Sculpture and Graphic Arts, SilpakornUniversity, appreciated the experiment. Her workgave a sparkling effect, resembling those of diamonddust, which resulted from white plastic pellets beingblown with heat. "This workshop let us try outmaterials that are new to us," she said. "We havelearned that we can create a work of art fromindustrial materials. Plastics of different colors areso vivid. Films are also interesting. Works can becreated as quickly as we wish. It did not take long fora piece of work to be completed. It is also muchfaster than other materials that take time to set. Thisworkshop gives not only new and creative works, but also new friends. Some of them are in youngergenerations. But we all has a good time workingtogether."

Ms. Pawika Somabhuti, aProduct Designer of SCG

Performance Chemicals Co.,Ltd., said: "I am very happy with

this activity. It turned out to be asuccess because it told the

artists that they could create moreworks with plastics which give out

different feelings unlike other materials that theynormally use. Many artists even plan to create moreworks with plastics at home. Besides, the companycan see that our conventional products can be indifferent forms. We may build on some effects thatwe have seen."Thanks to the SCG Foundation, art and industry worldhave finally met. This relationship will provokethoughts and perspectives for both parties in thelong run. Although the workshop was alreadycompleted, we can expect more of the new work ofart and new type of materials in the near future.
