THE SOUNDTRACK TO AUSTRALIAN SURFING ABC / UNIVERSAL (Aust) 5316313

INTRO - JACK THOMPSON / PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS - JET / WEDDING CAKE ISLAND - THE ATLANTICS / FOGGY NOTION - VELVET UNDERGROUND / JUST LIKE HONEY - JESUS & MARY CHAIN / 1963 - MARTIN CILIA / INTERVIEW - RABBIT BARTHOLOMEW / HIGHWAY STAR - DEEP PURPLE / OYE COMO VA - SANTANA / MORNING OF THE EARTH - G. WAYNE THOMAS / GOLDEN MILES - HEALING FORCE / DOWN DOWN - STATUS QUO / THE SLAB - HUNTERS & COLLECTORS / LIFE OF CRIME - THE TRIFFIDS / INTERVIEW - LAYNE BEACHLEY / ASCENSION - WIDDERSHINS / UNDER THE MILKY WAY - THE CHURCH / 4 - THE CRUEL SEA / INTERVIEW - TIM WINTON / THIS IS THE SEA - THE WATERBOYS / BOMBORA - THE ATLANTICS / SPIEGEL IM SPIEGEL (EXCERPT) - SALLY MAER & SALLY WHITWELL I finally got around to purchasing a copy of this. Only four instrumentals (which most of you will know well) and a wide variety of music covering (mostly) Australian from the 80’s onwards. It’s an interesting concept, and not all tracks are my cup of tea. There’s heavy metal, Oz rock classics, pub rock and tribal rhythms – something for everyone!! But the instro’s (Wedding Cake Island, 1963, 4 and Bombora) are worth the price of admission alone!

ROCKING GOOD TIME (ORIGINAL SOUNDS OF THE 50’s & 60’s I’M WALKIN’ / MOVE IT / BAD BOY / BUDDY’S SONG / D IN LOVE / STOOD UP / DON’T DESTROY ME / DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN / GOOD TIME BABY / HELLO JOSEPHINE / JUST A LITTLE TOO MUCH / GIVE ME THE RIGHT / RED CADILLAC / SHE’S GONE / 20 FLIGHT ROCK / TILL I KISSED YA / WELL I ASK YOU / POOR LITTLE FOOL / 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 / SUMMERTIME BLUES / PLEDGING MY LOVE / IT’LL BE ME This is an ALL VOCAL CD, but included because Shindig have graced the stage at “Shadoz” in recent

times. The album was recorded in September 2008 in a ‘home’ studio where 27 tracks were recorded in 4 hours with no retakes. John Beshara on lead, Dennis Goodall on rhythm, Bob Goodall on drums and Barry Treloar on bass. A good selection with some great guitar work. My only criticism would be that more vocal variety and harmony would improve things. Thanks to Barry for the review copy.

THE CAPITOLS BLUELOUNGE RECORDS (Aust) BLR 103) PARLEZ VOUS / WONDERING WHY / PAN AM GIRL / PEONY BLUE / MOONBEAMS / THE ENTRANCE / BIG BAD MAMA / BANG BANG / SWINGING KITTEN / BEDLAM STATION / NIGHT DRIVER / WONDERLAND Another VOCAL CD – am I losing the plot? This time, Martin Cilia is the star, co-writing all of the tracks. I must admit that I really enjoyed this. There are cool love songs, bluesy shuffles, bossa nova, R&B, swing and more. Martin contributes some tasteful and varied licks and includes two instrumentals, The Entrance and Night Driver. Steven Howard handles the vocals, Mike Berry is on bass, Andy Gatfield on sax, Bill Kezelos on drums and percussion. Recommended listening!

COOL IT, BABY BEAR FAMILY (Germany) BCD 16508 AH TEENY WEENY / RAINBOW DOLL (ALT) / CHICKEN HAWK / OH, OH BABY / LEFT RIGHT HERE / THE MESSAGE / ME AND MY BIG MOUTH / NEW, NEW BABY / I’VE GOT A DOLLAR (ALT) / SHE WON’T PET / COOL IT, BABY / SITTIN’ ON THE ROOF / QUARTER, DIME AND A NICKEL / NO PASSING ZONE / RAINBOW DOLL / I’VE GOT A DOLLAR / I WANT SOME LOVIN’ BABY (& DUANE EDDY) / SODA FOUNTAIN GIRL (& DUANE EDDY) / SWEET POTATOES / SKIPPIN’ Yet another vocal selection. This is reviewed here because it includes Duane Eddy’s very first single “I Want Some Lovin’ Baby” / “Soda Fountain Girl” – recorded in June 1955 and released on the EB X. Preston label as Jimmy & Duane with Buddy Long & The Western Melody Boys. It’s an ultra-rare single these days. The rest of the CD contains very good rockabilly and R&R vocals, and is presented in Bear Family’s usual comprehensive and elaborate style.

Booker T returns with a brand new 2009 album. The Drive By Truckers replace the M.G’s as his backing band, and do a competent job. Certainly not the M.G’s though! It’s an up-to-date set, raucous and funky, but always starring that great Booker T. sound. I’ve always been a fan of Booker, and this has not changed my opinion!

GUITAR MAN BGO (UK) BGOCD857 ROCK 'N' ROLL GUITAR MAN / NIGHT PROWLER / SON OF A GUITAR MAN / LOVE THEME FROM ROMEO AND JULIET / PLAY ME LIKE YOU PLAY YOUR GUITAR / MARK OF ZORRO / THE MAN WITH THE GOLD GUITAR / (LAST NIGHT) I DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP AT ALL / CANNON BALL RAG / BLUE MONTANA SKY / DANCE WITH THE GUITAR MAN / BONUS TRACKS: BREAK MY MIND / LOVING BIRD This is the first legal issue of Duane’s 1975 album recorded in England and produced by Tony Macaulay. It followed the UK hit “Play Me …” and contained a few too may ‘girlie chorus’ tracks, but also some great instrumentals, notably Cannonball Rag, Mark Of Zorro and Blue Montana Sky. The bonus tracks (both vocals!) were only issued in the UK (on the CBS label) in 1969. A very rare single.

Again, most, if not all, tracks have never appeared on CD before, therefore rare as hen’s teeth. It’s impossible to select favourites – in fact all are good. Sound quality varies considerably, as all are taken from vinyl or other dubious sources. But both are essential purchases for the serious RI buff. Available from me or Hound Dog’s Bop Shop.

Most of the early rock, R&B and country stars are represented, many with ‘lesser known’ tracks. Compiled by Dave Travis (who also wrote the liner notes), the selection covers the period from 1950 to 1960. I have a reasonably extensive collection of instrumentals, and was surprised to find that almost half of these tracks were not in my collection. So this is a valuable addition to any serious RI collector’s library. Great. PART 2 U.S.A. These tracks stem from a number of sources, and some have seen CD release. But again, the selection results in an enjoyable and valuable disc. All of Trev’s stuff is very collectable. SURFER’S BEAT / FREAKOUT!! He says on the cover of this “A surf album that isn’t surf, A psych album that isn’t psych. What’s going on? Straight sax and guitar rock ‘n’ roll instrumentals American style, that’s what!”. Another quote is “Cash-in albums from cheapo budget labels who knew no better than to deceive the public!”. Nevertheless, this is a great album, rare of course. Two tracks from Steve Douglas’ LP “King Cobra” are added as bonuses, including “Sashay” with Duane Eddy on guitar.

(SMOKIN’) JOE ROBINSON

I must say that I have not seen (or heard) Joe Robinson – no, I don’t watch “Australia’s Got Talent”! But Joe has had rave reviews so must rate a mention. He has just returned from Nashville and New York, and is scheduled to appear at the Sand Bar in Mildura on September 11 and at the Paris Cat in Melbourne on Sept. 12. He also has a new album “Time Jumpin’” available on ABC Music, a 12 track instrumental set. I’ll try to get one for review in the next issue.

ASYLUM / FUTURAS / CILIA

I finally made it to a Futuras / Ben Rogers gig at the Town Hall Hotel in North Melbourne, on Saturday 25 July, and was I glad I made the effort!! Ben Rogers’ Instrumental Asylum kicked things off at around 10pm with some of their “regulars” – Kanga Roux, WDR, Secret Agent Man etc, then the Futuras wheeled in their 1935 Hammond Organ and pleased with a selection including a great version of Paint It Black. Ben’s Asylum then returned with special guest Martin Cilia (with his Gibson Les Paul – not the Strat) for a superb “jam session” which included a fantastic version of Sleepwalk. How they all did this on a “stage” not much bigger than a postage stamp beats me. But it was a GREAT night, with friends Gary O’Rorke, John & Linlee Hall, Mandy Hall PLUS dancing girls (who had obviously indulged too much, but were entertaining!!) Incidentally, Ben Rogers and Co. have been gigging around Melbourne quite regularly, including Clifton Hill Hotel and the aforementioned Town Hall Hotel. Their track “Kanga Roux” has appeared on a new compilation “It’s A Gas Vol.2” from Press-Tone Music. Ben’s website is blazz.com.au

KEVIN BORICH Our intrepid reporter and photographer Mandy Hall recently saw Kiwi/Aussie blues guitar icon Kevin Borich in concert. She promises a review and more great pics next issue.

NEWS MARTIN CILIA INTERVIEW AUSTRALIAN GUITAR MAGAZINE, Issue 74 has an interview with Martin, also a bonus CD with Video features including The Atlantics and tracks by Martin. Martin is also completing his new album “ODD ONE OUT”, due soon. Check YouTube for a preview of the track “Pick On Me”. KIM HUMPHREYS IS ON THE RADIO Coast FM 963 now features as part of their BABY BOOMERS Thursday evening show, regular spots by Kim Humphreys talking about his prime passion, the formative years of Aussie Rock & Roll. He launched the segment in mid August with a feature on The Hoadleys Battle Of the Sounds, a national band competition that ran from 1966-1972. JET HARRIS SICK Jet has had to cancel his concerts for the foreseeable future. When he first cancelled dates a few months ago it was due to what he was told was a ‘frozen shoulder’. Since then he has had further tests and he has been told that he is suffering from throat cancer, which would have affected his shoulder. A terrific blow for Jet and his family. He is currently being treated for this and we are sure you will join us in wishing him the very best of luck in the future. We know how important it is to have support around you, and Janet is making sure he is being well looked after. Ironically a new book is due for publication shortly all about Jet. Tentatively titled “JET HARRIS: SURVIVOR” by Dave Nicholson. Looks like being 280 pages full of Jet’s story along with interviews with friends and artists such as Cliff, Bruce, Tony, Licorice etc., and no doubt lots of photos making an intimate portrait of a living legend. The publishers are still working on the cover and layout and as soon as we have more details we will pass on the information. At the moment it looks as though the price will be around GBP 17.99 + postage but this may change depending on publication costs. Many thanks to Pat & John at Leo’s Den for the above information. BENNY JOYNER INDUCTED My ol’ mate Benny Joyner was recently inducted into the Brisbane Steel Guitar Club Hall Of Fame. The inscription on the award reads . . . . . . “Benny or BJ as he was known across the world of Steel Guitar started his music career playing guitar in the Melbourne band the Planets in the 60’s moving to Pedal Steel in the 70’s.

Benny attended the Jeffran Steel College in Nashville and went on to be one of the major teachers in Australia helping most Australian Steel Guitar players. BJ and his wife Betty ran the SGA until his untimely death in 1998. A life member of Steel Guitar Australia, we all owe BJ a huge debt of gratification in becoming better players of the Pedal Steel Guitar. As BJ would say “How sweet it is!!!”

PART 3 Trev Faull is trying to unearth some details on a single on Life Records 4.012. It’s “Nightmare” by The Falcons. He says “aurally it’s close to the Atlantics’ “War Of The Satellites” (I guess he means War Of The Worlds) and the owner of the record believes it to be from the USA, but Trev thinks it’s more like Australian. Any ideas? SHADS ARE STILL COMING! By now, most of you will have tickets for “The Final Reunion – Together Again” tour with (Sir) Cliff and The Shadows. A few extra dates have been announced, so I thought I’d give a quick run-down of dates arranged so far: 6 February 2010 – PERTH, BURSWOOD DOME 10 Feb. – ADELAIDE, ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE 11 Feb. – ADELAIDE, ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE 13 Feb. – MELBOURNE, ROD LAVER ARENA 14 Feb. – MELBOURNE, ROD LAVER ARENA 16 Feb. – GOLD COAST, CONVENTION CENTRE 18 Feb. – BRISBANE, ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE 20 Feb. – HUNTER VALLEY, HOPE ESTATE WINERY 21 Feb. – SYDNEY, ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE 25 Feb. – AUCKLAND, VECTOR ARENA 27 Feb. – NEW PLYMOUTH, TSB BOWL OF BROOKLANDS 1 March – CHRISTCHURCH, WESTPAC ARENA Dates in RED are the extra dates recently announced. I understand there’s an extra date in Christchurch too.

RY COODER / NICK LOWE

Also recently announced is a tour by Ry Cooder and Nick Lowe with Joachim Cooder. They’re at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Sat. November 28. Don’t know how many instrumentals will be there, but I loved Ry’s scores for “Paris Texas”, “Blue City”, “Southern Comfort” and others, and Nick Lowe’s “Awesome” was, well, awesome!

My father, Gordon Jermy sadly passed away, aged 85 on 8 August. How can you tell a person’s story in one paragraph? It was Dad who thought of the name “2Good4Words”, so thanks Dad!! Thanks to all who have sent comforting messages and condolences.

VETLE MARTIN “Oystein Vetle Martin aka Vetle Martin passed away at the age of 64 on Friday the 3rd of July after a long illness. Oystein was the founder of the Norwegian instrumental group The Cliftons who lasted from

1961 to 1985. He did solo works under the name of Vetle Martin before he joined another Norwegian group, The Beatniks, on rhythm guitar and vocals for the last years of his life. He was known as the Norwegian version of Jet Harris, as he was one of the first to play and own an electric bass guitar in Norway. He built and invented his own electric bass guitar with strings from an upright bass and had to play in different keys than the other band members. Rest in peace Oystein!” The (instro) world is surely a wonderful place. The above tribute was sent to me by Sergio Nascimento in BRAZIL!! Triola Records in Sweden released a CD “Rockin’ On My Blue Guitar” in 1995 (?) comprising his original album plus bonus tracks. It is perhaps ironic that the inside sleeve shows a photo of Vetle with Les Paul …

Most of you will have heard of the passing of Les Paul, thanks to the sensitive and complimentary coverage on the media. I have taken the liberty of including quotes from Melbourne’s “Herald Sun” and Sydney’s “Daily Telegraph” in compiling our own tribute .

Born Lester William Polfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin on 9 June 1915, he died at White Plains Hospital, New York on 13 August 2009 from complications of severe pneumonia. His early career saw him playing hillbilly and jazz music (sometimes billed as Rhubarb Red or Red Hot Red), first recording in 1936. He played alongside greats such as Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and others. He formed the Les Paul Trio with Jim Atkins (Chet’s brother) and Ernie Newton. “Les Paul revolutionised music and created rock ‘n’ roll as surely as Elvis Presley and the Beatles by developing the solid-body electric guitar and multi-track recording”. Known for his lightning-fast riffs, Paul performed with some of early pop’s biggest names, and produced a slew of hits, many with wife Mary Ford. They earned 36 gold records for Vaya Con Dios,

How High The Moon, Mockin’ Bird Hill, The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise and others. In recent years, he recorded two albums with Chet Atkins, and a double Grammy award album “Les Paul And Friends” with guests such as Eric Clapton in 2005. He continued performing regularly at Fat Tuesday’s in New York every Monday night until recently. He had the unusual honour of being the only person inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He is perhaps best known for pioneering the electric guitar and inventing multi-track recording. His home studio in New Jersey was a “veritable Willy Wonka laboratory of inventions and gadgets”. His early experiments with amplification led to the introduction of the Les Paul model Gibson guitar in 1952, an extremely popular instrument ever since. He created “The Octopus” in 1953, the first eight-track studio, the forerunner of today’s recording techniques. I highly recommend the DVD “Chasing Sound!” and the book “An American Original” by Mary Alice Shaughnessy for further insights into the life of Les Paul.

LARRY KNECHTEL

My sympathies to Duane Eddy - Steve Douglas, Lee Hazlewood, Al Casey and now Larry Knechtel – all members of Duane’s coterie, have joined the “Rebels In The Sky” . Larry was born Lawrence William Knechtel on 4 August 1940 in Bell California. He died on 20 August 2009 in Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, Washington. His musical career began with piano lessons. In 1957 he joined the L.A. based rock & roll band Kip Tyler & The Flips. For rock instrumental fans, Larry was an integral part of Duane’s Rebels from 1959 to 1961, co-composing Drivin’ Home and three tracks from the “Girls” album. He later released an LP with the Carmel Strings and a couple of CD’s – “Urban Gypsy” and “Mountain Moods”. The following obituary appeared in “The Tennessean”. “Musicians Hall of Fame member Larry Knechtel, a multi-instrumentalist who contributed mightily to

classic recordings, including Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man”, died Thursday in Yakima, Wash., after an apparent heart attack. Mr. Knechtel, a former Nashvillian, was 69. “He played such innovative stuff,” said Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Duane Eddy, who gave Mr. Knechtel his start as a touring musician. “You’d hear the sensitivity of what he played, and the soul and the feeling, and then you’d look up at him and see a guy who looks like Charles Bronson sitting at the piano bench.” In August 1959, on the recommendation of sax player Jim Horn, Eddy hired Mr. Knechtel as keyboard player in his touring band, The Rebels. His first show with the band was in Hawaii, on Aug. 21, 1959, the day that Hawaii became America’s 50th state. Mr. Knechtel’s first session credit was as a pianist on Eddy’s The Twang’s The Thang album, and when Eddy reconfigured his Rebels’ lineup, Mr. Knechtel switched to bass guitar. “We were on the road in New York, and we played a place where the piano was in terrible shape,” Eddy said. “Jerry Lee Lewis had been there the night before, and he’s tough on a piano. And our bass player had just quit, so Larry said, ‘can I play the bass?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, can you?’ ‘Yeah, but I don’t have a bass.’ So I bought him a bass, and he was great on that.”

In the early 1960s, Mr. Knechtel moved to Los Angeles, and by mid-decade he was part of Los Angeles’ famed Wrecking Crew of session musicians, working as a bass player, keyboardist and harmonica player on numerous sessions. He played on albums by The Monkees, The 5th Dimension, The Mamas & the Papas and many others, and he was the keyboard player on Elvis Presley’s 1968 “comeback special” NBC program.

In 1970, he played the elegant piano part on “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, a song that he arranged and for which he won a Grammy award. Mr. Knechtel joined pop group Bread in 1971, and he toured and recorded with that band until its 1973 breakup.

Nashville Stint In 1988 he relocated from Washington state to Nashville, where he spent seven years. He signed to MCA Records as a solo artist, working in a jazz-inspired style that garnered good reviews and unremarkable sales. During his Nashville time, he recorded with Conway Twitty, Roy Orbison, Hank Williams Jr., Chet Atkins, Jim Lauderdale and others. He recorded and toured with Elvis Costello. “He was an amazing player, so deep and so completely spontaneous,” said Dave Pomeroy, a session bass player and the president of Nasville’s musicians union. “No one played the piano like he did. And his bass playing was influential as well, like

the big bass slide at the beginning of The Byrds’ ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’. Larry Knechtel is irreplaceable.”

He played piano and organ on the Dixie Chicks’ Taking The Long Way, an album that won five Grammy Awards. Mr. Knechtel toured the world as keyboard for the Chicks throughout 2006, working in a band that featured Nashvillians Audley Freed, Keith Sewell and Pete Finney.

“He was on half of my record collection when I was a kid, and so it was incredible for me to get to be around him,” said Finney, who played steel guitar on that tour. “While he was undoubtedly a little jaded about the music business after all those years – he’d seen it all – there was no way to hide the fact that he truly loved to play.” Mr. Knechtel’s final Nashville bow came in November 2007, when he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame with the other Wrecking Crew members. Vince Gill came onstage to sing the art Garfunkel part on “Bridge Over Troubled Water”; applause rang through the Schermerhorn Symphony Center as soon as Mr. Knechtel’s fingers touched the piano keys.” Listen to tracks by The Doors, Beach Boys (“Pet Sounds” and “Smile”), Simon & Garfunkel, Bread, Duane Eddy and the chances are you’ve heard Larry Knechtel.

BOB BOGLE Following my obituary to Bob Bogle in the last edition, I thought it appropriate to reproduce the memorial service from The Ventures’ website. Don Wilson’s eulogy is especially moving. Bob’s memorial service. June 19, 2009. The funeral service for Bob Bogle was held at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel in Vancouver, Washington on Friday, June 19, 2009, with the Reverend Richard Turner officiating. Many, many friends and family were in attendance. Bob’s wife, Yumi, had selected the music to be played during the service – Ventures tracks on which Bob played Lead Guitar – of course, “Walk Don’t Run”, then “Eye Of The Tiger”, “Oh Happy Day” and “What The World Needs Now Is Love” – from the “Rocky” CD. Bob poured his heart and soul into those recordings – the original title was to have been “The Ventures’ Inspirational Album”, but was later changed – but the music was clearly inspirational at the service. The cards distributed at the memorial contained the following beautiful sentiments:

When I die if you need to weep Cry for your brother or sister Walking the street beside you And when you need me, put your arms around anyone And give them what you need to give me. I want to leave you something Something better than words or sounds. Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved And if you cannot give me away At least let me live in your eyes, and not in your mind.

You can love me most by letting hands touch hands By letting bodies touch bodies And by letting go of children that need to be free. Love doesn’t die, people do So when all that’s left of me is love Give me away. Bob was eulogized by Don Wilson, by the Washington State Lt. Governor, Brad Owen, and by his long-time friend, Dave Callaham. Don’s eulogy is below: You know, it’s a damn shame that you have to die to get the recognition you deserve. Nobody played lead guitar like Bob; he had a certain sound that was so different and recognizable, there was no mistaking it was The Ventures. In 1960, no-one had heard a guitar sound like his. It caused so many would-be guitar players to either learn ‘Walk Don’t Run’, or go out and buy a guitar in order to learn ‘Walk Don’t Run’. Someone said it’s the greatest 2 minutes in rock history. Bob’s guitar playing was one of a kind. His bass playing was one of a kind. And HE personally was one of a kind. Bob was very kind, very giving and very sincere. Anyone who met Bob liked him immediately. He was charming, yet seemed a little bit shy – a combination that worked very well for

him – naturally – nothing put on – no ego, and the last one to brag about himself or his music. When I first met Bob in 1958, I remember that I liked him immediately. After knowing him a short time, it seemed like I had known him forever. We had a great rapport right away. He was my very best friend. He was the brother that I never had. Although he didn’t finish school, he was very smart. What he lacked in knowledge or talent, he made up 1000 times in perseverance. If he started something, he finished it – a musician, a pilot, a recording engineer and much more. I remember so many good laughs we had together, laughing so hard we had tears! He really had a wonderful sense of humor. Just like me, he loved a good joke or comedian. We had good times and tough times together, for 51 years. And believe it or not, in all those 51 years, we never, ever had an argument. Never! It’s too bad not enough people understand the contribution that Bob created in the world of music. You have touched so many lives, and will be missed by all. The guitar may be silenced, but your reverb and echo will live on forever, for up-and-coming guitar players into generations, year after year after year. You will never be forgotten. I couldn’t begin to tell you how much I will miss you, every day. Your battle is over. God bless you, Bob Bogle. Rest in peace, my friend. As we left the chapel, the heavens opened and it poured with rain. Bob always loved rain – perhaps the heavens were crying for him.

MARTIN CILIA THE ODD ONE OUT BOMBORA CREATIVE - BOMBORA 21 THE ODD ONE OUT / REAL TO REEL / CRY FOR A SHADOW / EXILE ON CHAPEL STREET / MEDICATION / THE SAME SONG REMAINS / OLD GUITARS (v) / CHUNKY / PICK ON ME / ANCESTOR / WEST OF BONDI / 1993 / ROAD TO BALLARAT

Martin said to me “expect the unexpected” and had reservations that his new CD would not live up to the expectations of rock instrumental buffs – WRONG!! Martin travels some diverse musical roads on this album, but rest assured, he is one of the few that court the classic instro genre who has his own identifiable writing and playing style. The cover (with excellent artwork by Mandy Hall) shows a Gibson Firebird V (if my research is correct) which is a departure in itself. And the music is too. By the way, why doesn’t Martin play his signature guitar, a Martin? Jeff Cripps – A# Studio proprietor, drummer, audio engineer, slide guitarist and Atlantics FOH operator, crops up as co writer on several tunes. My score is 9 out of 10 (less one vote for including a vocal!!), and I still don’t like those cardboard sleeves! THE ODD ONE OUT Martin stakes his claim as a country picker to be reckoned with. A “jolly”, less than 2 minute, romp with echoes of Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West, plus a guest appearance by Jet Harris, or is it Al Caiola? REAL TO REEL This is hallmark Cilia, the easily identifiable style he has established both in solo mode and with The Atlantics. CRY FOR A SHADOW The only ‘cover’ on the album borrows much from the Beatles’ original. John Lennon’s trademark ‘Mick Green

inspired’ rhythm has been replaced with some luscious acoustic guitar and while George Harrison’s phrasing remains, Martin wields a Strat and turns up the echo. . EXILE ON CHAPEL STREET For those of you who don’t know, Chapel Street is a Melbourne centre for nightclubs, cafes and specialist shops. This track starts with echo and space sounds, developing into a rock delight. Reminiscent of late Shads and some of Hank’s solo work. MEDICATION Sergio Mendes lives! Some fine nylon string playing on this Brazilian inspired Bossa. THE SAME SONG REMAINS Think very early Santana with thick dark distortion. Martin stretches out and jams his way through much of this Latin inspired piece. OLD GUITARS (v) What? A vocal? Poignant lyrics by Dave Warner – Any muso of Baby Boomer vintage will relate only too well to the lyric. Steve Brookes sings this from the heart while the 80’s production values let us know where the journey begins. CHUNKY Alex Heweston (bass) and Bill Kezelos (drums) really shine on this tune. A funky Stax ‘n’ Volt vibe with 60’s Brit Blues overtones courtesy of some Freddie and Albert King inspired soloing, al la Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack. PICK ON ME Another Tamworthy tune. A prime example of how good pickin’ and a great melody can co exist! Bakersfield meets the Blarney Stone. ANCESTOR Very atmospheric intro giving way to a distinctive rhythmic groove that I recall Steve Stills championing. WEST OF BONDI How far west of Bondi can you go whilst still retaining a surf sound? Distorted guitar intro segues into a strident 12 string propelled melody. Great!! 1993 Overdriven guitar carries the melody in the tempo of “Every Breath You Take”. Just when you think it is all over the bridge section lifts it all to another level. ROAD TO BALLARAT A crackly, dusty 78 rpm road! at that! Acoustic picking with a folk atmosphere. Ballarat is Victoria’s third largest city, about 110 km west of Melbourne. Our one criticism is that Martin’s fine acoustic playing is masked by the ‘crackle track’ which becomes a little distracting and would have been better faded out after the intro. So my recommendation is go out and buy this – you won’t be disappointed. Check out My Space and You Tube for previews, or see Martin’s website www.martincilia.com Surely a candidate for 2 Good 4 Words album of the year. . . . . . . Any challengers?
