A case study for an illustration on childhood obesity.
Citation preview
project statementBackground:Childhood obesity continues to be a problem in the United States. There have been many changes in schools and in communities to support healthier choices, but the most important change needs to be made in the home. Parents need to teach the importance of making healthy decisions and continue to enforce these good habits. The Denver Post has written an editorial to bring awareness to this problem, and I have created an illustration to reflect the article.
Target Audiences:Future parents, parents with children ages 0-18, low income.
Objectives:This article and illustration should spark thoughts of change towards a healthier lifestyle, and action towards creating a healthier lifestyle for themselves and their children.
Obstacles:Obesity is rapidly increasing in areas of poverty and low income. Cheap and fast food is a way of living for many that do not have the means to buy healthy food or cook for themselves. We can change someone’s thoughts on a healthy lifestyle, but many are not financially or physically able to continue to make healthy choices.
Key Benefit:Living a healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of many health problems and diseases.
Support Statements/Reasons Why:Small changes in your everyday life can make a drastic change. Taking even five minutes a day to exercise can help in the long run, it is just important to stick with it. This determination is a trait that any parent should want their child to have, so what better way than to lead by example. A person’s health is important for longevity of life, and our children deserve a chance at a long life. We need to teach them the benefits of making healthy choices so that they can have every opportunity when they reach adulthood and they are not held back for health reasons.
Tone:The tone of this illustration is authoritative. The focus of the illustrration is to empower change.
Media:This illustration will be viewed online on a local news site accompanied with the article regarding childhood obesity. Since the illustration will be viewed solely online, it will be created using vector artwork which is a smaller file size and allows for faster upload. The illustration will also be in RGB color space for optimal viewing on the screen.
Creative Considerations:This article is only in english, and the ethnicity of the people in the illustration is unknown because it is a sillhouette. The illustration does not have pertinent words in it, so it should translate to all languages.

Recent word that childhood cholesterol levels have gone down is undoubtedly good news — and it’s about time we’ve seen some when it comes to kids’ health markers.
However, there remains so much to do to improve the long-term health outlook for the nation’s children that no one should suffer the delusion that the worst is behind us.
To the contrary, kids are still as overweight as they’ve been. A growing proportion of them are
