EditorialThe fall Semester, 2008 got off to a brisk start. There was immenserush for admissions in various programs of study as the repute of theUniversity as a Quality institution has spread, mainly due to theregularity of Class-room instruction and the feedback from theemploying organizations where the BUITEMS alumni are working.

About 865 new students have embarked on the voyage of gainingmeaningful grasp over the essentials of their subjects of study, thusgaining competence and confidence as useful members of the society.It has been demonstrated time and again, that our students are notcontented with the passing of examinations or getting degrees only; theyare rather focused on achieving complete mastery over the subject.They have their eyes fixed not on today only, but also on the future- theirown future and the future of the country as well.

Human capital development is now being treated as the focal point ofnational vision all over the world. Education and knowledgeaccumulation are the crucial and essential inputs necessary for thegrowth of the human capital. Pakistan will be able to achieve high rate ofgrowth to which it aspires, only when knowledge accumulation is madethe focal point of our public policy.

BUITEMS has the satisfaction of initiating efforts for the much neededrevolution of creating awareness about the value of providing andgetting quality education comparable to the standards applied at the prestigious institutions of the world. Fresh students of the Universitywould be well-advised to become a part of the effective force which canhelp the country achieve its cherished goal of progress and prosperity.

The Fulbright Scholarship program offers grantsfor international educational exchange ofscholars, educators and professionals. Fundedby US Senator J.William Fulbright, the programis one of the most prestigious programs of theworld and is operational in 144 countries. It is amatter of great pride and honor for BUITEMS thatsix of our young faculty members contested forthe scholarship nominations by HEC andmanaged to win scholarships.

Miss Rahila UmerSumalani, LecturerDepartment of ComputerScience, Faculty ofInformation andCommunication Technologyhas been selected for the pres-tigious Fulbright Scholarship 2009. She did BS(CS) from BUITEMS in 2006. She joinedBUITEMS on 9th April, 2007 as a lecturer andplans to pursue her career further in TheoreticalComputer Science.

Mr. Liaquat Ali ChannaAssistant ProfessorDepartment of English,Faculty of Arts & BasicSciences, BUITEMS, Quettahas been selected for theFulbright scholarship for PhD inEnglish. He has been serving in BUITEMS,Quetta since March 2005. Mr. Channa did hisM.A (English) with first class first position fromthe University of Sindh, Jamshoro, in 2004. Hehas recently got his M.Ed in English LanguageTeaching (ELT) in 2007 from the University ofGlasgow, United Kingdom.

Mr. Faisal A. K. Kakar,Assistant ProfessorD e p a r t m e n t o fT e l e c o m m u n i c a t i o nEngineering, BUITEMS. hasbeen selected for the Fulbright/HEC/USAID PhD Scholarship

program 2009. He will be pursuing higherstudies with specialization in Telecommunica-tions from Fall-2009 in the United States.

Ms. Fatima Asif, LecturerDepartment of ComputerEngineering, BUITEMS, hasbeen selected for theprestigious FulbrightScholarship 2009. She hasbeen offered a scholarship forMS leading to PhD program in the United Statesand will start her studies in Fall 2009. Mrs. FatimaAsif, graduated from University of Engineeringand Technology Lahore.

Mr. Asif Ali ChangeziAssistant ProfessorD e p a r t m e n t o fT e l e c o m m u n i c a t i o nEngineering has been selectedfor Fulbright/ HEC/ USAIDScholarship 2008, and will bestarting his PhD studies at Georgia Institute ofTechnology USA. His primary field of researchinterest is Signal Processing.

Mr. Abdul Samad, LecturerDepartment of ComputerScience, Faculty of Information& Communication Technology(ICT), BUITEMS, Quetta wasawarded Fulbright Scholarshipfor MS leading to PhD for theyear 2008. Communication Technology, was awarded "BestTeacher Award" for the year 2007 at a ceremonyheld at HEC Islamabad, on August 13, 2008.Honorable Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman, Chairman HECawarded the certificate of Best Teacher of theyear to him. Engr. Muhammad Nadeem hasproduced two research papers accepted forpresentation at international conferences to beheld in Lahore and Islamabad in the near future.

The students of BS (BA) 4th semester (Financeand Banking) visited the State Bank of Pakistan,Banking Service Corporation Quetta, on 3rd July,2008; as a scheduled part of their studyprogram. The idea behind this visit was toexpose the students to the real world ofBanking Service. In his opening speechMr. Khalid Mehmood Accounts Officer SBP,briefed the visitors and elaborated on thehierarchical levels and functions of SBP,Quetta.

Mr. Zafar Ahmad, Divisional Head of CurrencyDepartment, explained the processes ofprinting, issuance and finally the disposal ofcurrency notes. The organizational structure,operational units and the working includingrecording and maintaining were welldemonstrated.

An interesting and informative question andanswer session followed the briefings. The ChiefManager Mr. Sajid Ali Shah concluded thesession with his remarks. The students went ona round of various sectors of SBP to see forthemselves the operating units functional in SBP.

ATC has become a forum which helps all itsparticipants to expand and stretch the horizonsof their knowledge and thoughts. Thisyear the Annual Technical Conference wasorganized by "Society of Petroleum Engineers(SPE)" in Serena Hotel Islamabad. The themefor this event was "Tight Gas ReservoirsDevelopment-Challenge for the industry".

Mr. Nabeel a student of Petroleum &Gas Department, BUITEMS Quettaalso participated in the conferenceand presented his research paper on"Produced Water Management"which is also a big problem confrontedby the petroleum industry since longThe senior most batch of BUITEMSof Petroleum & Gas department alsoparticipated in the conferencesponsored by various multinationalcompanies.

Joint Faculty visit toImperial College, UKReported by: Prof. Dr. A.M. Cheema

Dr. A. M Cheema, Dean,Faculty of Biotechnology& Informatics visitedImperial College,Hammersmith Campus,London, UK, to meet thePartner/ collaboratorProfessor Gary Frost,Head Nutrition & Dieticsduring 12 July to 28 July 2008. The visit was apart of the HEC funded project "Linkage ofPakistan Universities with Foreign Universities"under the activity of "Joint Faculty Visit". Theobjective of the visit was to strengthen theexisting understanding of collaborative researchand other academic activities and meet variousresearch groups associated with ProfessorFrost to broaden the sphere of activity for greaterinteraction in researches on Pakistani relatedissues.

Professor Cheema had several meetings withProfessor Frost and his research group forcollaborative research which may establish asustainable research facility at BUITEMS. Thepartners also had meetings with other scientistsprominent among them being ProfessorDr Andrew Prentice of Institute of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, University of London todiscuss research in under-nutrition &malnutrition; Dr Mary Hickson of NHS Trust atChairing Cross Hospital on investigations intothe diets of the subjects with specif icdegenerative diseases such as cardiovasculardiseases, cancer, diabetes etc.; Dr. LeislWandrag also of NHS Trust called upon todiscuss the possibility of interacting with the TaskForce collecting data on physiologicaladaptations at high altitude in Himalayan rangeand Dr Andrew Wiley at Hammersmith Hospitalto know about the recent trends in GenomicMedicine.Professor Jimmy Bell also of ImperialCollege and collaborator of Professor Frosthighlighted the recent trends and use of MRI andother methods in investigations on the role ofdietary carbohydrates on body composition andappetite regulation. At his facility Ms. JulieFitzpatrick, Advanced Practitioner in MRI andMs. Guliana Druighel, Senior Research

Radiographer demonstrated and explained thegreater importance of fat depots in internalorgans compared to its presence under the skinfrom infancy to old age. The British scientistsmentioned above agreed to reciprocate the visitwith the object of strengthening researchcollaboration with the BUITEMS.

Telecommunication industry plays a veryimportant role in our national development. Noone can deny the importance oftelecommunication in the modern world.Telecom industry has contributed more thanRs. 111 billion to the national exchequer underdifferent heads of direct and indirect taxes. Itincludes GST Rs. 44.6 billion, Activation Tax 19.2billion, PTA deposits 10.86 billion, other 36.95billion.

A group of MBA 2nd semester arranged aseminar on the topic of TelecommunicationIndustry-Growth, Competition & its Impact on theEconomy of Pakistan with major focus onBalochistan on July 11, 2008. The group includedMr. Gohar Hayat, Mr. Shujaat Ali, Mr. ShoaibAhmed, and Ms. Fehmeeda Farhat. Theseminar started with recitation of verses fromthe holy Quran by Atif Sattar.

Theyshared the current figures of sales growth of thetelecom sector and performance of companiesin recent years. Mr. Talha Ijaz discussed themarket situation in detail.

A Question and Answer session was held afterthe speech. After the Question Answer sessionhonorable Chief Guest Mr.M.A.K Malghanithanked the organizers for conducting a veryinformativeseminar. Certificate were distributedamong the participants. The Seminar In-chargeMr. Abdul Raziq thanked all the participants.

The Balochistan University of InformationTechnology, Engineering & ManagementSciences is geared to groom intellects as wellas artistic talents of the students to such arefined level that it can help them realize theirown potential for success in the professionalfields. A drama competition was held on 2nd ofJuly, 2008 at the auditorium of BUITEMS, citycampus under the banner of Student AffairsOffice. A big gathering of audience comprisingdistinguished faculty members and students waspresent on the occasion. Ms. Sadiqa Ramzan,Ms. Nadia Ali Shah, & Mr. Zeeshan Khalid werethe worthy judges of the event. All the dramaspresented were inspirational and attention

grabbing. The 1st position was awarded to thedrama "BUITEMS HEE TO HAI". The secondposition was awarded to a drama GUESTHOUSE. The contest was conducted byMr.Nasrullah Khan.

Balochistan University of InformationTechnology, Engineering & ManagementSciences Quetta is an institution known for itsquality of education. BUITEMS also encouragesthe students who have good skills and talents inco-curricular activities.

On the 7th of July 2008 Directorate of StudentAffairs organized an Inter-Departmental SongsCompetition held in the auditorium of BUITEMSCity Campus. Ms. Sadiqa Ramzan, Ms. TayyabaAkram, & Mr. Zeeshan Khalid were the judges ofthis competition. More than twenty participantsfrom both campuses took part in thecompetition. All participants were well preparedfor the occasion. They sang different songs.Faculty and students were also present toenjoy the competition. They gave a big hand toappreciate the participants.

Mr. Owais Javed of BS (BA) succeeded inimpressing the judges most. He got 1stposition, followed by Mr. Faisal Javed of MBA with2nd position. Ms Anjellina Haroon of BS (TextileEngineering) & Mehreen Gul of MBA both sharedthe 3rd place in the competition.

A students delegation fromBUITEMS visited dif ferent universities of Pakistan. This 15-day tour was a part of HECsponsored student exchangeprogram. Mr. Mohammad ShahKhan & Ms. Sadaf Amjad,lecturers, Faculty of ManagementSciences, accompanied thestudent delegation comprising 14students from all five faculties ofthe university. The first destinationof this delegation was Institute of BusinessAdministration (IBA), Karachi, which is arenowned center in business education inPakistan. In Lahore, the delegation visitedLahore University of Management Sciences(LUMS) & National College of Arts (NCA).

In Islamabad the student delegation went to seeQuaid-i-Azam University - one of the topuniversities in Pakistan. The next day, thedelegation was invited to the Army Public Schoolof Management Sciences (APCOMS), thanks toDr. Khatak, Dean Faculty of ManagementSciences, APCOMS. The students were givensouvenirs by the Director, APCOMS. A wholeday was then dedicated to visit ing GIKUniversity of Engineering, NWFP. Situated in thebeautiful town of Topi, GIK is producing

qualityty engineers for local & internationalmarkets. This students exchange program wasa learning experience for all the students. Thistour gave them a new insight and they explorednew dimensions of learning. The HEC &BUITEMS' management deserve allappreciation for arranging such a wonderfulprogram.

BUITEMS is an institution working for excellencein education. Although at BUITEMS the students

are given due facilitation andattention, it was still felt that aspecial of f ice should beestablished which could fullyconcentrate on variousproblems faced by students.After thorough deliberationsunder the supervision ofworthy Vice Chancellor,creation of the Career Planning& Counseling Unit materializedon 22nd Sep. 2008.Prof.Barkat Ali and Mr. JamalMustafa played key roles in itsestablishment.The majorobjectives of the Unit arefacilitation and capacityenhancement of the students’academic career through

Balochistan University of InformationTechnology, Engineering & ManagementSciences frequently arranges visits of elite menof letters. The visit of Mr. Altaf Hussain Qureshi,member of the executive council, Karwan-e-IlmFoundation and Chief Editor "Urdu Digest" onJuly 8, 2008 was one such instance. During his

meeting with the Vice Chancellor, BUITEMS, thedistinguished guest was prompted to comeforward for providing financial assistance to thediligent but needy students of the university. TheVice Chancellor, during his briefing stressedupon the need of philanthropic contributions onthe part of the well- to- do citizens of the stateas the future of the country is taggedto the acquisition of quality educationby our youth. He pointed out thatvarious forms of scholarships like theUSAID need based Scholarships;Japanese need based scholarships& Khushali Bank scholarships arepresently being availed by thedestitute but industrious students ofthe university but the quantum of needis so large that still more assistanceis required. He eulogized the stepstaken by the Karwan-e-IlmFoundation in this regard.

Mr. Altaf Hussain Qureshi gave a detailedbrief ing on the aims & objectives of theKarwan-e-Ilm Foundation and told that theorganization undertook the task of providingfinancial assistance to the needy studentsinitially with a meager resource capital ofRs. 10,000/= but now the scope of assistancehas expanded to Rs. 10 million per annum. Headmitted that students from Balochistan aremore deserving as the province has to move atdouble pace in order to catch up with the otherprovinces. He described his visit to BUITEMSas a step in the right direction. Karwan-e- IlmFoundation is contributing to the character-building efforts of the youth in such a way thateach educated young man and woman ofPakistan can lead to the progress & prosperityof the country in a positive way.

Mr. Altaf Hussain Qureshi was taken on a roundof the campus. He appreciated theacademic atmosphere, thestudents' zeal for learning & thededicated approach of the learnedfaculty. He emphasized the need ofgiving proper respect and status tothe teachers in order to ensure thecharacter-building and intellectualdevelopment of the students.

It was a matter ofgreat honor and pridefor the BalochistanUniversity ofI n f o r m a t i o nT e c h n o l o g y ,Engineering &M a n a g e m e n tSciences, Quettathat one of itsstudents won the topposition in 75 Kgcategory at the All

Balochistan Independence Day Body BuildingChampionship held on 14th August, 2008. Thechampionship, organized by the BalochistanBody Building Association, attracted no less then30 contestants. Mr. Awais Khan, a student of BS(Economics) impressed the judges with hisoverall well- defined muscles and was adjudgedto be the best body builder in the 75 Kg category.

Mr. Shafiq Ahmad Khan, the provincialEducation Minister lauded the form of thecontestants and urged all students to pay dueattention to their physical fitness in order toprepare themselves for intellectualachievements. He later distributed prizes amongthe position holders of the contest.

A two-day workshop on "Time Management"was held at City and Takatu Campuses of theBUITEMS by the Training & Development. TheVice Chancellor of BUITEMS Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai was the chief guest while theresource person was Mr. Mohammad ShahKhan, lecturer, Department of ManagementSciences. The Vice Chancellor, whileexpressing his views emphasized theimportance of time for the progress of a nation.He said that teachers should make their studentsunderstand the importance of time. He furthersaid that such workshops are helpful inpolishing the skills of teachers. He praised theefforts of the Development staff & hoped thatthey would continue playing their roles inproviding trainings on different subjects for thefaculty & administration personnel of theuniversity. The resource person Mr. MohammadShah Khan explained some strategies for timemanagement as time is the essence of universe.

The seventh annual Young leader (YLC)conference was held in Ramada Plaza, Karachifrom July 1-6, 2008 with the collaboration ofSchool of Leadership (SoL), which provides aplatform to individuals for discovering, andutilizing their developing abilities and elevatingtheir lives through conscious efforts.

'Bataa teri raza kya hai?' was the theme for YLC2008. It was a 6-day comprehensive and thoughtprovoking leadership training program, whereaspiring leaders were exposed to diverseinternational gathering. Living, sharing andgrowing together with fellow participants fromall over Pakistan nurtures recognition,understanding and respect for opposite pointsof view. Students from 33 cities of Pakistanparticipated in YLC.

Visits by the Iranian educationists and qaris tothe Balochistan University of InformationTechnology, Engineering & ManagementSciences Quetta have become an annualfeature. Such visits demonstrate the strongbonds of faith and brotherhood between the twonations.

On September 26, 2008, the "Salam Group" ofTV performers from Iran paid a visit to theUniversity and warmed the sacredatmosphere and hearts of the faculty & studentswith their enthralling performance. The groupcomprised Syed Roohullah, a student ofArchitecture Engineering, Mr. Majeed Faqeeh, astudent of Electronic Engineering, Mr. KazimAizdi, a Computer Software Engineer and SyedMehdi, a student of Civil Engineering. The groupis especially devoted to presenting Islamicmusic. The group enjoys international repute fortheir impressive performances.

Mr. Ahmad Shah, Director Students Affairsintroduced the group to the audience. Themembers of the group started their performancewith the recitation of verses from the Holy Quranand followed it with recital of Asma-e-Husna withsuch deep devotion and excellent voice control

Theseviews were expressed by theStudents Affairs Coordinator,Mr. Ahmad Shah Durrani whileaddressing more than 200 studentsof Allama Iqbal International IraniSchool and Khadija-Tul- KubraInternational School. He gavebriefing to the students regardingdif ferent departments of theuniversity.

Students visited the class rooms, library,laboratory and computer labs in the CityCampus while in Takatu campus they visitedBlue Chip Lab, Owais Ahmed Ghani ResearchCenter, CAD CAM Lab, Expo centre anddifferent departments of engineering. They wereaccompanied by Dr.Ehsan Kakar and Miss ZaibUnisa Ghrshin.

At the end of the visit delegation expressed theirgratitude for the cooperation of BUITEMS. Theywere highly impressed by the quality of teachingbeing imparted at the university.

First meeting of Board of Studies in Physics washeld on July 3, 2008. Engr. Muhammad Nadeem from Department ofComputer Engineering, Faculty of Information &Communication Technology was invited as anexpert in the field of Computer Science toparticipate in the Curriculum Revision Workshopjointly organized by the Federal Ministry ofEducation and ED-Links in Islamabad on August04-13, 2008. The theme of the workshop was"Implementation of Standards Based Educationin Pakistan". Objective of the workshop was tocreate Computer Curriculum for Grades I - XII,as Ministry of Education is planning to introducecomputer education as a compulsory subject forthe said grades in near future. The Ministry alsoinvited experts in other areas i.e., Science,Mathematics, and English to review the existingcurriculum.

Lotus Notes Client end training was spread over2 days (i.e.3 August,2008, 4 August 2008). It wasconducted by the Directorate of IT andorganized by Directorate of Training andDevelopment. It was an effort to give clearunderstanding of IBM Lotus Domino softwarewhich delivers enterprise-grade collaborationcapabilities, across a wide range of uses andapplications. It can be deployed as coree-mail and enterprise scheduling infrastructure,as a custom application platform. Thisextensive breadth of uses also creates a widearray of deployment scenarios.

A two-day trainingworkshop oncommunication skills wasorganized by Learninginnovation division, HEC incollaboration with BUITEMTraining & Development,Quetta. More than 30faculty members from allthe public sectoruniversities of Balochistan participated in theworkshop. Dr. Hamid Rafiq Khatak, a renownedmaster trainer of the country, was the resourceperson of the workshop. The objective ofworkshop was to enhance the verbal & non-verbal communication skills.

Mr. Masood KhanKasi, Sports Officer had the distinction ofrepresenting the Balochistan University ofInformation Technology, Engineering &Management Sciences, Quetta at the meetingto finalize the schedule for holding various sportsevents at different universities. The meeting wasalso attended by Mr. Rahim Bukhsh Channa,Director General Sports HEC Islamabad whileNajeeb-ur-Rehman Channa of Mehran UET,Jamshoro was the host organizer of themeeting. BUITEMS had the distinction of beingawarded responsibility for hosting the AllPakistan Inter University Table Tennis (Men's)Championship in Quetta in March, 2009. Inaddition, BUITEMS was invited to send teamsto various universities in the country forparticipation in the events allocated to 10 otheruniversities as well.

A cultural show was held at BUITEMSauditorium on 09th July, 2008, by the studentsof BS (BA) 4th A. The show was supervised byMr. Muhammad Ayaz Mandokhail, lecturer ofSociology, Department of Social Sciences. Thepurpose of the show was to represent allaspects of the culture of Balochistan. Eachpresentation was followed by a specific activityregarding the presentation title.

The show started with the recitation of versesfrom the Holy Quran and was followed by thepresentation of the first group of Dawood,Hassan and Bahadur. Their topic wasBalochistani Foods. They also presented anactivity regarding the foods of Balochistan.Following them there were Muhammad Fasih,Imran Bashir and Wahaj Ahmed whose topicwas JIRGA SYSTEM and an activity wasperformed regarding this theme. The third groupthat came was composed of Ibraheem Haiderand Rehmatullah Khan. Their topic was nomadsof Balochistan. They were dressed as nomads

and presented some of the tools used bynomads in their daily life. Kiran, Summra andSidra Saher were next to come and present theirtopic on Female Outfits of Balochistan. Theypresented Pashtoon, Balochi and Persiandresses. They also performed an activityshowing the female outfits of Balochistan.Another group whose topic was PashtoLiterature was of Muhammad Siddique, NoorAgha and Mirwise Jamil. They presented theirtheme explaining Ghari (Pashto form of poetry).They performed their activity singing someGharis on the beats of Darya (drum). After themit was the turn of Sheryar, Ayaz and Dedak,whose topic was Male Outfits of Balochistan.They talked about dif ferent dresses ofBalochistan. To present Balochistani marriages,it was the group comprising Sidra Arif, SidraNisar and Reham Anjum. They talked aboutdifferent traditions of Balochistani tribes inMarriages. They presented a mahendi ceremonyas an activity for their presentation. To follow themNajm-ul-Sahar, Sofia Jaffer, Najma batoolpresented show on the Jewelry of Balochistan.They presented Pahsto, Balochi and PersianJewelry respectively. Next to come were SadafAnwar, Maryam Gillani and Braishna Inayat. Theypresented their topic on Handicrafts ofBalochistan. They also performed an activityelaborating the theme of BalochistaniHandicrafts. The second last group of the showwas of Daniyal Shakir, Ahsan and NaseebullahRindh. Their title was Balochistani Music. Theirpresentation was followed by a song sung byNaseebullah with Balochi dance as an activity

for their presentation. The last group of the show presented Balochistani Folk dances. It comprisedShah Faisal Agha, Zain-ul-Abidin and Nisar Ahmed. They presented the history of folk dances andthe kinds of Pashto and Balochi Folk dances. Along with presentations, the show was also madebeautiful by the beautiful Balochistani Music i.e; Pashto and Balochi as well as the Folk dances ofBalochistan i.e; Pashto Attan and Balochi Chap.
