Although planning staff at the City of Courtenay are waiting for additional information before issuing the final approval, this project has been delayed numerous times. The owner is re-evaluating the project, based on the new Development Cost Charges, and may not go ahead with the project at this time. If this project was to go ahead, it would contain 32 multi-family town house units. First Report: April 30, 2008     Last Report: May 16, 2012

The Environmental Assessment Office and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency have approved guidelines for the Raven Underground Coal Project. The guidelines incorporate input from First Nations, the public and governments. Independent scientists approved the framework from which information about potential effects on the environment, transportation, heritage resources and other factors will be gathered. The Raven Underground Coal Project, planned for a site five kilometres west of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal, proposes to include a 200 hectare mine site, which will house all buildings and facilities and a 3,100 hectare underground mine. The company proposes to transport coal from the mine by truck along existing highways to Port Alberni. This is an 80 kilometre route. Port upgrading work at Port Alberni is to be conducted by the proponent to enable shipment of coal offshore. The company predicts the project will generate $1.1 billion for the North Island economy, creating 200 jobs during construction and 350 full-time jobs once the mine is operational.
