From the Chair Dear colleagues As I write this it is early morning, the sun is shining, the blossom is on the trees, the birds are singing and we have had the Club's first driving event on 26 March so it feels like the driving season has truly started. Some members have continued to compete during the winter with the Indoor Driving Trials Group and our good luck and best wishes went with all those competing at Keysoe Julie Wedgbury triumphed to win her class Pony Team with Team Shetty for the 6 th year!!! Well done to Julie from all of us at WDDC !! It seems a long time since our Annual Dinner and Awards in January 2017 where it was great to see club members and supporters in their "posh" gear and well done to all. The BSTT (Blood Sweat Toil and Tears) award went to Sue Anderson who turns her hand to just about anything and everything. Without people like Sue we would not have a club. Preparations are taking shape for camp in May and we have decided to include the Level 3 Certificate in Road Driving Safety on Saturday 20th, so if you wish to take this and have not yet told us, please do so ASAP. In preparation for this Tony Gregory ran a training day on 4 March at Ivan and Carol Meredith's farm, where we went through the essentials such as safe and correct harnessing up, putting to/taking out, care of the horse, principles of driving on the roads, and health and safety matters. A good day - but it was a little chilly! We have a good calendar ahead of us and I urge you all to put dates in your diary, get your entry forms in and join in the fun. We are now seeing enthusiastic new members come through and I think we have something for everyone ranging from those starting out, those with young/novice horses/ponies and the experienced who want to use the club activities for schooling/practice to support their other driving activities, and of course those whose passion is pleasuring driving. There are also some good events at other clubs and between all of us there is actually a lot to do over the season, so look on our web site for links and keep your eyes peeled on your emails and Facebook for other things arising in addition to the pre-planned calendar. For example a few people have said they would like to go to the Reading Carriage Sales and make a Club trip of it. I have never been but I gather it is a really interesting and informative day out. Next sale is the summer one on 3 May; the autumn one is 6 September and there is a Northern one on 28 June - but probably not the best location for our members? If you are interested please let Linda know which dates would work for you and we will try and link people up. The Committee has received information that additional training grants are available to encourage people into driving in the form of "taster" days and these can be run alongside training for existing club members - we are looking at how we might do this and will contact people shortly with a proposal. It would most likely be something around autumn - so watch this space. Returning to Spring Camp we will be running two arenas again this year and are hoping to have the Farrier Talk (which was postponed in the winter) on either the Friday or Saturday evening as a social event for all club and friends/family of club members - you won't have to be attending camp to come. We will provide food for which there will be a small charge - we will let you know details ASAP.

From the Chair

Dear colleagues

As I write this it is early morning, the sun is shining, the blossom is on the trees, the birds are singing and we

have had the Club's first driving event on 26 March so it feels like the driving season has truly started.

Some members have continued to compete during the winter with the Indoor Driving Trials Group and our good

luck and best wishes went with all those competing at Keysoe – Julie Wedgbury triumphed to win her class

Pony Team with Team Shetty for the 6th

year!!! Well done to Julie from all of us at WDDC !!

It seems a long time since our Annual Dinner and Awards in January 2017 where it was great to see club

members and supporters in their "posh" gear and well done to all. The BSTT (Blood Sweat Toil and Tears)

award went to Sue Anderson who turns her hand to just about anything and everything. Without people like Sue

we would not have a club.

Preparations are taking shape for camp in May and we have decided to include the Level 3 Certificate in Road

Driving Safety on Saturday 20th, so if you wish to take this and have not yet told us, please do so ASAP. In

preparation for this Tony Gregory ran a training day on 4 March at Ivan and Carol Meredith's farm, where we

went through the essentials such as safe and correct harnessing up, putting to/taking out, care of the horse,

Could this be a scene from WDDC Spring Camp 2017 ?

ACTIVITIES THAT WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED OR YOU MAY HAVE MISSED!.......

Christmas Walk

28th December 2016 This year’s walk took us along the crisp frosty towpaths of the Staffs and Worcester canal in Kinver. We then

ventured on up behind the village on footpaths and lanes which gave a roof top view of Kinver. The more

adventurous tackled a further 11/2 miles along footpaths turning back over Whittington horse bridge and

returning along the towpath.

On return to the The Vine 28 members, family, and friends tucked into a well-earned lunch.

Thanks to Carol and Tony who organised the walk and lunch. Sandra and Geoff

Christmas Annual Dinner The WDDC annual awards / dinner was yet again a very cordial evening held at The Granary at Shenstone. Good company and food fuelled the evening along with a very popular picture slide show / video show presentation from Tony Cowles of WDDC events throughout 2016. Sue Anderson was presented with the Blood Sweat Toil and Tears award for just being there for the club throughout the year helping to organise, time, backstep or whatever is asked of her of which we are all very grateful and could not manage without her and all our other helpers and supporters. Tony & Carol Gregory were presented with a photo book of memories as a thank you for their time, effort, guidance and support provided to one and all whilst on the WDDC committee for many many years. We know they will continue to be a huge source of knowledge and inspiration to us all. AME

JOIN UP TRAINING AND DEMONSTRATION WITH BARRY THOMAS

The coldest January day you could imagine did not deter an excellent turn out to see Barry Thomas demonstrating how to achieve join up with our own troublesome ponies. From miniature ponies to large ponies with differing dislikes and fears be it people objects or just being touched, Barry covered them all. An educational and entertaining day well spent. Thawing out took a little longer! AME

Lincomb Equestrian Indoor Outdoor 2017

Well, we chose a lovely day for the first club outing with equines for this year.

Just 6 of us drove in the end as Philip Wright was not well enough to travel. We send him our best wishes and hope to see him and Barbara at the next one.

Having access to both Lincomb arenas’ enables us to prepare the dressage arena, cones course and obstacles on Saturday. Thanks to Vicki, Linda, Dawn and the boys, Simon and Sue for helping. The average age of helpers is getting frighteningly high. Where are you young fit members?

I must say that the turnouts looked very smart and professional. The novice class was won by Giselle with Wendy second. The open, Linda with David a very close second. Multiples by Julie with Dawn 2

nd.

Thanks to for ALL the help on the day.

The winners received rosettes and prizes and we wished Julie the best of luck for the forthcoming indoor Championships.

The photo of Julie is from a different event as she was a blur at this one!

Dear Members,

Just a few words to say a big ‘Thank You’ to the Members and

Committee for the wonderful book that was presented to us at

the Annual Dinner. It not only depicts us and our horses

enjoying ourselves, but also many of our friends and fellow

members too. A volume to treasure and leave on the coffee

table for others to enjoy too!

Thanks again,

Tony & Carol

SAFETY

IS NOT ALL ABOUT THEM – IT IS ABOUT YOU!

YOUARE RESPONSIBLE

The new Club Safety Policy says: -

“The Club expects all its members to; show consideration for matters of safety, relating to

both themselves and others at all Club events; and to comply with all reasonable requests,

relating to safety, from Event Organisers.”

This means you need to be aware of the safety of your turnout – the fit and soundness of the harness

and cart – check stitching, nuts and bolts, quality of welded joints on the cart etc. etc.

If you have a problem it compromises not only your safety, but that of everyone else at the event.

Make sure everyone in your party is aware of the dangers not only from your turnout but from

everyone else as well.

Don’t have small children in dangerous places and definitely not strapped into carts.

Ensure your groom is competent to deal with a crisis. Be aware this could come from anywhere - a

runaway horse and cart is a very dangerous thing and can cause a lot of damage. Be alert.

A groom is a vital part of your turnout with the responsibility to balance the cart, adjust harness where

appropriate, and cope with an upset or frightened horse. This means that your groom needs to be

someone who is able, capable and strong/fit enough to comply with the rules

Be aware when passing a horse/pony being put to or taken out of a cart – check that it is ok for you to

do so and only do so at a walk – be prepared to stop and wait.

If you are a steward, be aware of where horses may come from. If you know you have difficulty

moving quickly, make allowances. Be safe!

Park your car where it will not be in the way. If you have a dog keep it on a lead, and check whether

there are any restrictions on taking dogs where the event is taking place.
