MESSAGE THE MAR THOMA PARISH PERTH PARISH MESSENGER Volume 72 / October 2014 THE WORD “Therefore our life is simply contained in the bare Word; for we have Christ, we have eternal life, eternal righteousness, help and comfort, but where is it? We don’t see it. We neither possess it in coffers nor hold it in our hands but only in the bare Word. Thus has God clothed his object in nothingness” (Luther 1906) Our desire to retain control over things great and small is the root of what Luther identified as our besetting sin, works- righteousness . It is so easy, he said, to slip from receiving a gift to earning a reward. We want to build salvation out of our own works and initiate, determine and control. We want to give ourselves identity and to create meaning for our lives by our efforts and achievement. Yet God will not have it so. It is not that God denies us our own active role in the world. We must never under- estimate the importance of our works, but we m u s t a v o i d f a l s e understandings of them as well. It is blessed to give to our neighbours through an active, creative life, but it comes to God, it is more blessed to receive-that “bare Word” of promise, which we can either see nor seize and hold in our own safekeeping. Our salvation is, as Luther puts it, clothed in nothingness. It is God’s gift, borne by the seemingly substantial sound of a voice. We never know when we shall hear God’s word in, with and under the many human words addressed to us. We never know when that word will echo so resoundingly in our hearts, stilling pain, unmasking sin, and sowing hope, that our lives take an unexpected direction. The hardest fight is to accept that we cannot control this word. We must let God be God. Gracious God, keep us steadfast in your Word. Give us ears to hear, wisdom to understand, courage to respond. Teach us confidently to receive what you would give and to surrender to you the control we cover for ourselves. Amen. May our good God bless you all, With prayerful regards, Mothy Achen PARISH MESSENGER • www.perthmarthoma.org.au • 0426 283 829

    Volume 72 / October 2014

THE WORD Therefore our life is simply contained in the bare Word; for we have Christ, we have eternal l i f e , e t e r n a l r ighteousness, help and comfort, but where is it? We dont see it. We neither possess it in coffers nor hold it in our hands but only in the bare Word. Thus has God clothed his o b j e c t i n nothingness (Luther 1906)

Our desire to retain control over things great and small is the root of what Luther identified as our besetting sin, works-righteousness . It is so easy, he said, to slip from receiving a gift to earning a reward. We want to build salvation out of our own works and initiate, determine and control. We want to give ourselves identity

and to create meaning for our lives by our efforts and achievement. Yet God will not have it so. It is not that God den ies us our own active role in the world. We must never under-estimate the importance of our works, but we m u s t a v o i d f a l s e understandings of them as well. It is blessed to give to our neighbours t h r o u g h a n a c t i v e , creat ive l i fe , but i t comes to God, it is more blessed to receive-that bare Word of promise, which we can either see nor seize and hold in our own safekeeping.

Our salvation is, as Luther puts it, clothed in nothingness. It is Gods g i f t , b o r n e b y t h e seemingly substantial sound of a voice. We never know when we shall hear Gods word in, with and under the many human words addressed to us. We

    never know when that w o r d w i l l e c h o s o resoundingly in our hearts, sti l l ing pain, unmasking sin, and sowing hope, that our l i v e s t a k e a n unexpected direction.

Amen.

May our good God bless you all,

    With prayerful regards,
