From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents The School will be hosting a P – 12 Open Day on Saturday 30 March from 1.00pm until 3.00pm, the same weekend as the School’s Art Show. If you have friends who are interested in sending their son to Toowoomba Grammar School can I please encourage you to mention the Open Day to them? Tours of the Junior School and Senior School will occur at 1.00pm, commencing from Old Hall. Further advertising material features in this newsletter, immediately following my article. So, how was school today? Most parents would have asked this question of their children on multiple occasions. For many boys the typical response is, ‘Good.’ The follow up question is invariably, ‘So, tell me what you did today.’ The most frequent response can be a very typical boy answer of, ‘Stuff.’ Hardly illuminating. Some families have nice approaches that encourage conversation and enlighten everyone about the day. I am aware of several boys’ afternoon routines, which involve the drive home after school and talking about the best things that happened during the day. Many families eat dinner together every night and each family member talks about the best part of the day. The Australian Council of State School Organisations (ACSSO) released a series of open ended questions that are likely to elicit extended answers to the question at the start of this section. The questions are outlined below. You can also collect a copy of these questions from the Junior School office if you wish. I hope parents find these questions helpful and enjoy extended conversations with their sons.

GPS Swimming Championship Our GPS Swimming Team travelled to Brisbane last Friday to compete at the Junior GPS Swimming Championships (Years 5 to 7). The boys had the opportunity to swim at Brisbane Aquatic Centre (Chandler), the same pool in which Commonwealth and Olympic Games athletes swim. Our swimming team represented the School well and the boys should feel proud of their efforts.

Pictured above is the GPS swimming team for 2019.

I commend Mr Darren Stewart (Head Junior Coach), Mrs Jess Galbraith (Team Manager), Mr Brendan Doherty (Sportsmaster) and Miss Tamara Quinn (Swim Coach) for their fine work with the boys. National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will occur across Australia in May. All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit formal assessments for Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy. Reports on students’ achievement will be sent to schools and parents later in the year. The test dates are 14, 15 and 16 May. The boys are taught exceptionally well by experienced teachers, who cover core curriculum content in these areas. The basic premise around preparation for any tests is ensuring students are taught well and, in terms of NAPLAN, cover National Curriculum content on which the tests are based. In addition, the boys will cover past papers and sample questions in class leading up to these assessments to ensure they are well prepared. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Hungry 4 Health Terri Hamilton (Hungry 4 Health) spoke to the boys on Wednesday of this week in an hour-long session for each year level. Hungry 4 Health founder, Terri Hamilton, is a qualified and experienced dietitian / nutritionist and mother of two young boys. Hungry 4 Health provides nutrition education programs to primary school students. The program presented to the boys is based on ACARA standards to help teachers reach curriculum requirements. Terri provided a session that covered a range of nutrition topics in the aim of informing and inspiring the boys to make healthy choices. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From Head of Teaching and Learning Over the course of the next few weeks all year levels, apart from Year 6, will be off enjoying their time as part of an elongated Outdoor Education Week. The period starts off with Years 3 and 4 who head to Noosa from 20 – 22 March, followed by Year 5s who travel to Tallebudgera from 25 – 27 March. Prep and Year 1 will be enjoying their activity day at Peacehaven Park in Highfields on Friday 29 March. We finish off with the Year 2 sleepover here at school on for evening of Tuesday 2 April. The Year 6 boys will have their Canberra experience in Term 2 from 16 - 21 June. This time provides the teachers with a wonderful opportunity to work with your sons in a different environment to the classroom and to get to know them on another level. All of our outdoor education activities still relate to vital development of our boys. This provides an opportunity to work on an interpersonal level and help to support our boys to develop well rounded life skills such as, but not limited to: independence, perseverance, manners, social interaction skills, making connections between their learning and their life, problem solving skills and many more. I hope that every boy enjoys his time during these weeks and picks up some skills that he may not have even known he had. Continuing with looking at some snippets of work from the grades, here is a snapshot into Years 3 and 4.

Year 3 are developing their persuasive writing skills. What better way than

to write a persuasive letter to Mr Campbell arguing for more holidays! Year 4 are analysing Australia’s First People in the Dreamtime and traditional Aboriginal life. They have explored a vast range of texts, and learnt of Aboriginal ceremonial traditions and artworks to gain deeper understanding, with this now reflected in their own creative narrative writing and artworks.

School admirably. The boys certainly enjoyed the experience and the chance to swim against the other GPS Schools. Thank you to the parents who travelled down to support the boys on this special occasion.

Finally, thank you to Mrs Jess Galbraith, Mrs Liz Pratt, Mr Darren Stewart and Miss Tamara Quinn who have worked with the boys and supported them throughout the swimming season. The support and guidance shown to the boys by these staff is appreciated by the boys and the School.

House Cross Country

On the last day of term, Thursday 4 April, we will have our House Cross Country in the School grounds. A letter will go home soon with information and parents are encouraged to come and support the boys. All boys are encouraged to do some extra running in preparation for this event.

Peak 2 Park

Sunday 3 March saw a number of the Junior School boys pounding the streets of Toowoomba, in the Peak 2 Park, raising money for local charities. The boys cheered on the 10km runners and then moved onto the start of the 4km. The sea of gold shirts at the start line was a wonderful sight and the boys ran incredibly well thanks to the support of school staff and parents running alongside them. Thanks to Mrs Amelia Grills, Mr Jordan Swinney, Mr Alastair Bain and Mr Mike Sharpe for supporting the boys.
