Thank you to all who attended the recent International Women’s Day event held recently. It was marvelous to see so many ‘girls’ of different ages come together to celebrate the contributions made by women in society, past, present and expectantly, in the future.

Our next community event will be the Italian National Day Celebrations on June 8, at the Brisbane Abruzzo Club. We are very fortunate to have H.E. the Italian Ambassador Dott. Pier Francesco Zazo and his wife present with us for this occasion. What another perfect

occasion to remember our cultural heritage and the many positive elements that the Italians have imparted on our Queensland lifestyle. Tickets are available at the office so don’t miss another great chance to share this community event with family and friends.

During the last few months, Co.As.It. has been managing the re-building of Casa Serena which is scheduled to be completed in June.

Our staff and our clients are looking forward to the opening of this facility, it will be a great achievement for Co.As.It., the community and for the sponsors who have supported our vision.

Since the beginning of this year there has been an increased demand for our services which has resulted in employing more than 10 extra staff - but we have not been able to appoint all the new positions.

We have many suitable applicants but they do not possess the necessary language skills.

We ask for your support in trying to encourage people who may have the language skills and experience to apply for positions available with Co.As.It.

We have also been concentrating on advertising our services through new branding on our vehicles, updating our stationery and advertising on billboards in various locations around Brisbane.

We always welcome your feedback, if you or your family have previously received support or are currently clients of Co.As.It., please let us know about your experience with us. This feedback will help us improve our services or just bring a smile to our faces with your positive comments. We would love to hear from you, our email address is: [email protected]

SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Co.As.It. was fortunate to welcome the new Italian Ambassador H.E. Dottor Pier Francesco Zazo when he made an official visit to Queensland soon after his appointment as the Italian Ambassador to Australia last year. The Italian Consulate hosted a function at the Italian Language Centre (ILC) where Dott. Zazo was able to meet a number of representatives from the many Italian associations in Brisbane.

The following day, the Ambassador visited the new Co.As.It. corporate offices now located at Albion, where staff and members of the Management Committee greeted him.

Co.As.It. passes on its best wishes to Dott. Zazo for a successful and worthwhile sojourn in Australia.

AGED CARE SERVICES

Do you have a community care worker who helps you with light domestic duties? You may not be aware that Co.As.It. workers cannot use harsh chemicals in their cleaning tasks.

This is due to our workplace health and safety policy where we do not place our workers at risk of danger due to exposure to chemicals that may cause allergies, breathing issues or other adverse reactions.

Many decades ago, we only had natural cleaning products that were just as efficient at cleaning and disinfecting – here are some common and easy products that will save you money, your health and yet still clean very efficiently.

Basic baking soda all-purpose formula • 1/4 cup baking soda• 1 litre water

Dissolve baking soda in water, and pour into a spray bottle.

This mixture can be used as a general cleaner for all surfaces.

Keep some dry baking soda handy in a jar with a shaker cap for jobs that need a bit more abrasive action.

You can use this mixture to clean virtually anywhere in your home, including kitchen and bathroom surfaces, inside the refrigerator, the microwave, and the dishwasher. Always rinse well. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer!

Use some of your baking soda cleaning solution in a microwave safe cup and microwave on medium for one minute to banish food odors.

Sprinkle dry baking soda on carpet to freshen, let sit for a few minutes, and then vacuum.

Sprinkle dry baking soda in shoes to neutralize the odor.

Baking soda is also a natural drain cleaner!

Measure ½ cup baking soda and ½ cup vinegar. Pour the baking soda into the drain first, followed by the vinegar. It will bubble furiously. Follow with two litres of hot water.

Please do not use this method if you have recently used commercial drain cleaners.

Le uscite del Co.As.It. aumentano ogni mese e siamo ormai arrivati a più di 50 persone che regolarmente partecipano ai gruppi organizzati dal programma dei Servizi Comunitari del Co.As.It.

L’ultima gita, in ordine di tempo, è stata a Surfers Paradise, con l’ormai fermata obbligatoria alla pasticceria italiana di Saa Maria prima di arrivare al Jupiters’ Casino per tentare la fortuna alle slot machines e ai tavoli della roulette.

Pensandoci bene, perdere al gioco non è poi così brutto: il governo riceve una percentuale delle giocate che viene iniettata nuovamente nella comunità sotto forma di sovvenzioni ad organizzazioni, come il Co.As.It., a scopo non di lucro. E quindi perdere ci è quasi sembrato di contribuire ai benefici della comunità!

Sin dall’inizio di queste gite, il numero dei partecipanti è sempre stato tendenzialmente in aumento. C’è sempre da divertirsi anche sul pullman: barzellette, canzoni o informazioni interessanti sui luoghi che verranno visitati. Una bella differenza fra una gita e restare a casa davanti alla televisione, eh?

Le gite creano anche un senso di unione e di amicizia, e i partecipanti si trovano a raccontare agli altri aneddoti e storie delle loro famiglie, a far vedere fotografie e a raccontarsi gli avvenimenti delle ultime settimane.

Le gite forniscono inoltre uno stimolo non indifferente ad interagire con altri membri della comunità e sono organizzate anche per gli anziani parte del programma HACC che vivono nella zona sud e della baia di Brisbane. Invitiamo pertanto tutto i residenti in queste zone interessate al programma a mettersi in contatto con noi.

Una volta passato un piccolo colloquio potrete senza problemi unirvi al gruppo e prendere parte attivamente alle nostre attività e alle nostre avventure mensili!

La responsabile delle attività CALD Rosalba Patane è sempre stupita dallo splendido stato mentale di Margherita Vitanza che, alla “tenera” età di 103 anni, vive a Marycrest.

Nata il 22 settembre del 1911, Margherita ha visto il mondo cambiare nei suoi 10 decenni di vita, dalla prima auto a manovella alla corsa nello spazio.

Margherita si era trasferita presso la Casa di Riposo Marycrest a Kangaroo Point per stare vicino alla figlia, residente anche lei della stessa casa di cura.

E nonostante la scomparsa della figlia e l’immenso dolore sofferto, Margherita continua a vivere la vita, giorno dopo giorno, con grande serenità.

Sebbene non sia più agile come una volta, riesce sempre ad essere la “regina del pollaio” e a fare delle belle battute quando si presenta l’occasione!

A Margherita piacciono molto le chiacchierate “uno a uno”, i massaggi alle mani e le piace anche prendere attivamente parte al piccolo gruppo italiano che Rosalba organizza per i residenti di Marycrest.

Il gruppo era gestito inizialmente da Rosa Basile, l’altra responsabile delle attività CALD, e Rosa ricorda con piacere l’interesse e la voglia di Margherita di essere fotografata per la rivista del Co.As.It.

Nelle ultime settimane l’interesse dei gruppi si è indirizzato sulle attività tipicamente pasquali e molti residenti hanno apprezzato le uova colorate e i dolci portati dal personale del Co.As.It.

AGED CARE SERVICES • DAY CARE RESPITE CENTRES - SOUTH COAST

On the Gold Coast, the year has literally taken off with a bang with the opening of our new office in Chevron Island, the expansion of the day care respite groups to five days and now, also providing Allied Health services to HACC clients.

January saw us celebrating ‘Australia Day’ with native flowers, animals and a boomerang as part of the decorations.

Our Australian flag was proudly displayed, the Australian anthem and other well known ‘Aussie’ songs sung and clients enjoyed typical Aussie fare, lamingtons, mixed grill and pavlova - to name a few! We also introduced our clients to the true ‘Aussie’ game of ‘Two Up’.

February was infused with ‘love in the air’ to celebrate Valentine’s Day, consequently the outing for this month was on the ‘Love Boat’. The gods smiled upon us and the weather was perfect for such an outing greatly enjoyed by everyone.

In March the groups began to operate five days a week, all the clients are exercising with ball games and playing soccer – it is amazing to see the ‘spark’ re-ignited in the clients as they play these games and become quite competitive.

Building the clients’ self esteem and playing games that they enjoy is an amazing process to witness and quoits, ten pin bowls and darts are always part of our normal day.

The clients enjoy one another’s company, look out for one another and are responding and connecting with the staff on many different levels.

It is heartening to watch the response of some of the more ‘high needs’ clients as they form friendships with other clients and look forward to coming to DCRC to enjoy the companionship and laughter.

LA NOSTRA SALUTE

Cos’è l’incontinenza? L’ncontinenza è un termine generico per descrivere la perdita incontrollata di urina.

Giulia: Esistono vari tipi di incontinenza?Rosa B: Si, ne esistono tre: il primo si chiama incontinenza da stress e si tratta di un disturbo molto diffuso anche tra giovani donne, che di solito si manifesta quando si solleva qualcosa di pesante, si ride o si starnutisce. Poi c’è l’incontinenza d’urgenza che di solito colpisce le donne dopo la menopausa. Ed infine c’è l’incontinenza per traboccamento in cui si verificano emissioni di urina continue.

Giulia: Ma solo le donne soffrono di incontinenza o anche gli uomini?Rosa B: Purtroppo i problemi di incontinenza colpiscono sia donne che uomini.

Giulia: Ma ci sono dei programmi o servizi sociali che si occupano di coloro che soffrono di questo problema?Rosa B: Certamente! Anzi c’è proprio un programma sovvenzionato dal Ministero della Sanità del Queensland, offerto in collaborazione con il Co.As,It. Il MASS, ovvero Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme.

Giulia: Bene, ma che cos’è questo MASS?Rosa: In realtà questo programma offre vari tipi di servizi fra i quali l’assistenza a coloro che soffrono di problemi di incontinenza.

Giulia: Ed è per tutti?Rosa B: Quasi.. Questo servizio è solamente disponibile per i residenti del Queensland o per chi è in possesso di una carta pensionistica (pensioner card), Questo è per evitare che le persone non completamente autosufficienti debbano essere ricoverate in case di cura o all’ospedale.

Giulia: Mi sembra un programma interessante. Come funziona? Rosa B: Guarda, è molto semplice. Prima di fare domanda per questo servizio, bisogna già essere clienti del Co.As.It. perchè il programma MASS è disponibile solamente tramite i vari gestori sanitari convenzionati ed il Co.As.It. è fra quelli.

Giulia: Bene, quindi se si vuole usufruire dei servizi MASS bisogna prima far parte del Co.As.It. e se non ne fate ancora parte chiamate il 3262 5755 per ulteriori informazioni. Poi come si fa a fare domanda?Rosa B: Si contatta il Co.As.It. che manda una infermiera che deve valutare le condizioni di incontinenza del paziente. Una volta superata questa fase si può iniziare un trattamento o ricevere, attraverso il Co.As.It. una assistenza adeguata alle effettive necessità.

Giulia: Ma che tipo di servizi vengono offerti?Rosa B: Ce ne sono molti. Diciamo che il MASS tramite il Co.As.It. offre servizi che vanno da una cura del

catetere alla fornitura di accessori vari come pannoloni per il giorno o per la notte, ma anche lenzuola, copri-poltrona assorbenti, biancheria intima e mutande assorbenti.

Giulia: Che grande organizzazione! Ma quindi come faccio ad ordinare i prodotti?Rosa B: È molto semplice! Basta contattare il Co.As.It. e loro piazzano gli ordini per i vari clienti.

Giulia: Ma si paga questo servizio?Rosa B: Si, si paga annualmente. Sono 20 dollari a cliente all’anno che vanno pagati al Co.As.It. ogni sei mesi.

Giulia: Bene! Rosa B: Davvero! I clienti del Co.As.It. apprezzano moltissimo questo tipo di servizio perchè non si devono preoccupare di prenotare o addirittura comprare i pannoloni o altri prodotti nei negozi. Il Co.As.It. pensa a tutto e solo per 10 dollari ogni sei mesi.

Giulia: Fantastico!Rosa B: Eh si, è proprio fantastico! Per avere maggiori informazioni, chiamate Rosa al Co.As.It. al numero 3262 5755.

AGED CARE SERVICES

For many of those who are genuinely interested in caring for the elderly, it soon becomes evident that caring for an older person requires considerable energy, expertise and patience. Not to exclude the knowledge required in dealing with the many facets of the person’s cultural identity.

It is not as easy as it looks.

On-going training is a vital part of great care provision and Co.As.It. implements training sessions regularly to keep its workers at the peak of their professional ability.

In order to keep our staff well skilled we run many training sessions over the year, the latest one called Caring in Harmony was held over three nights in April.

The training run by Nella Alba-Calabrese and the relevant aged care coordinators had over 100 community care workers involved in the workshops.

The workshops were specifically aimed at recognizing cultural differences between Co.As.It.’s many culturally diverse clients but most importantly, workers learned how perceptions of these different cultures can stereotype people incorrectly.

Through films, discussion groups and role plays the workers were provided with valuable information and strategies on handling a variety of challenging situations and how best to interact with the person they are assisting.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Domenica 9 marzo 2014, presso il Victoria Park Golf Club di Brisbane, si è tenuta una celebrazione tutta al femminile, in occasione della Giornata Internazionale della Donna, orgogliosamente organizzata dal Co.As.It di Brisbane.

L’evento, intitolato “High Tea and Fashion Parade”, è stato presentato dalla celebre soubrette televisiva Gretel Killeen e ha visto la partecipazione di oltre 300 donne tra le quali spiccava l’ospite d’onore Angela Filippello, Principal Registrar di Stato Civile per l’Australia, assieme alla Dott.ssa Tiziana Grasso, Acting Consul per il Queensland e Northern Territory, nonché alcuni presidenti, esponenti istituzionali e rappresentanti delle associazioni italiane a Brisbane.

La ricorrenza della giornata internazionale della donne è oramai un’usanza significativa dedicata a tutte le donne del mondo che vengono celebrate per l’esemplare modo in cui svolgono i loro ruoli nella società come madri, nonne, mogli, figlie nonché grandi lavoratrici.

Sia Gretel Killeen che l’onorevole Angela Filippello hanno accennato che in ogni parte del mondo tale ricorrenza ricorda le difficoltà sociali affrontate in tempi lontani dalle donne e celebra l’evoluzione collettiva e sociale promossa dai movimenti femminili.

La stessa Angela Filippello ha ricordato quanto lei stessa sia stata fortunata ad avere la possibilità di studiare in un periodo storico e sociale dove la figura maschile dominava.

Tuttavia, la sua famiglia progressista l’ha sostenuta in tutte le decisioni, e nonostante le pressioni sociali Angela Filippello è diventata la donna simbolo della società australiana.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Grazie a questi modelli famigliari e ai vari movimenti di appoggio alle donne che si sono sviluppati negli anni, le donne in molti paesi del mondo oggi possono raggiungere posizioni di riguardo ed affermarsi in ruoli prima soltanto riservati agli uomini.

A questa breve presentazione si sono susseguiti una serie di avvenimenti che hanno intrattenuto i partecipanti in questo pomeriggio dedicato alle donne.

Evento principale della giornata è stata una sfilata di moda professionale e stravagante sponsorizzata da Paula Acheson, titolare del noto negozio di moda Petrol Boutique a Paddington. Le modelle, applaudite dai partecipanti, si sono esibite in modo eccezionale e graziosamente.

Successivamente, la Sig.ra Dina Ranieri, direttrice del Co.As.It., ha sostenuto il ruolo della donna nella società moderna e si è complimentata con le organizzatrici per l’ottima riuscita dell’evento.

La giornata si è conclusa positivamente grazie anche al costante impegno del comitato di raccolta fondi, capace di organizzare con attenzione le numerose attività.

You will all be aware that for the past 20 years we have had a long list of volunteers who have graciously attended to the social and emotional needs of our elderly Italians now living in nursing homes.

These volunteers have kept the residents linked to their Italian community, maintained a linguistic and spiritual connection for many, especially for those who lack English language skills to engage with others in the nursing homes. Their loneliness and isolation is both sad and distressing.

With greater community support, now many older people are living longer in their own home.

Although they are in their own much loved environment this does not mean that they have a greater amount of social, recreational or emotional connection with other people.

This group is equally isolated, depressed and lonely. Perhaps their families have grown up and moved away, their children may work full time, they suffer mobility problems and cannot get out often or they are just single people who never married or had a family of their own.

The federal government has recently made changes to the Community Visitors Scheme to enable people still living at home to now receive visitors from our organization.

AGED CARE SERVICES • COMMUNITY VISITORS SCHEME

We are very excited to be able to provide one on one visits in the community for older persons who still live at home.

This new scheme has very strict guidelines and all volunteers must have a police check and undergo the orientation

and information session run by Co.As.It. If you are aware of people in our community who are isolated and lonely and you are interested in becoming a home visitor, please come in and talk to us – you will be welcomed with great enthusiasm.

It’s not just about getting together with the residents in nursing homes, our volunteer visitors get together to enjoy each other’s company too.

In March the CVS Coordinator Emanuela Febo held one of their regular luncheons at the Co.As.It. office to welcome three new volunteers and also to see some of the photos of their last outing.

It’s a perfect way to swap stories about what they talk about with their residents, which activities provide them with enjoyment, how they spend the time when visiting. It is also a wonderful opportunity to develop supportive friendships with the other volunteers. There is no greater gift than time and friendship for an older, lonely resident in a nursing home.

If you have one hour per fortnight and think you would like to make a difference to someone’s life, please become a volunteer – we guarantee you will love it and they will love you.

Linking up with other Italian community groups to share the wonderful free activity program for older Italians is very popular.

Every time an association meets, it’s a great opportunity to bring our activities out to the community. In March, members of the Lutwyche Italian Catholic Federation met for lunch and a social get together, a perfect occasion for Co.As.It.’s Senior Project Officer Zina Hulbert and Project Support Officer Maria Rocchi to organize some healthy and fun activities to promote healthy and active aging.

Over 35 people enjoyed low impact exercises through ‘line dancing’ - greatly enjoyed and executed with energy! The entertaining activity held some distinct benefits because they were actually gentle exercises that involved muscle stretching, movement and deep breathing.

These community linkages are vital to the continuing success of maintaining services for the Italian older community. Co.As.It. has received funding from the Department of Social Services to provide recreational activities, information talks and a host of free workshops and educational sessions aimed at helping the older Italian to age well.

The Diversity and Inclusion Program runs weekly activities including bocce, card games, zumba, and let us not forget the hugely popular computer and IPAD classes-waiting lists are now forming to attend these free technology classes. Recently there were also free hearing tests for people who attended the information session on Hearing Loss!

‘Girotondo’ Playgroup runs twice a week throughout the school terms. This term through a range of activities organised by teacher Laura Zanichelli, children had the opportunity to play, sing, and dance... all in Italian!

The engaging program included learning how to describe the colours of the rainbow, play dress-up and make a dinosaur mask to celebrate Carnevale, learn all the words associated with going to la spiaggia (the beach) e il mare (the sea), use shapes (quadrati, triangoli, rettangoli) to build a house, describe where to place the teddy (sotto, sopra, dentro, fuori).

Finally, the eight-week program ended with a Pasqua celebration in the park where everyone enjoyed finding hidden chocolate eggs during the ‘caccia alle uova di Pasqua’.

Teacher assistant Carmel Paolino made each child a special ‘Pasqua’ parcel to take away with them.

The Italian Language Centre runs ‘Girotondo’ Playgroup on Mondays and Thursdays in four 8-week blocks across 4 terms throughout the year.

Ciao a tutti! Mi chiamo Livia, ho 22 anni e sono una studentessa del terzo anno all’Università Cà Foscari di Venezia. Studio “ Conservazione e gestione dei beni e delle attivitá culturali”: il percorso di laurea che ho scelto è “Tecniche artistiche e dello spettacolo”. Il corso fornisce le conoscenze fondamentali relative alla storia dell’arte, gestione e organizzazione delle manifestazioni culturali, ed inoltre storia e tecniche delle arti performative ed audiovisive.

Vivo a Venezia da dieci anni, e questa città incredibilmente unica non finisce mai di stupirmi. Guardandomi attorno, ogni giorno scopro qualcosa di nuovo e meraviglioso che mi mette di buon umore: la coppietta di innamorati che fa il suo giro per i canali, o per esempio i colori brillanti e la luce scintillante del mercato di Rialto.

Sono nata a Roma, dove ho vissuto gli anni d’infanzia: questa città mi è rimasta nel cuore, ed ogni volta che vi faccio ritorno mi sento a casa.

Tramite l’Ufficio Stage della mia Università, ho avuto occasione di fare l’internship presso il Co.As.It. di Brisbane, ed è incredibile come ci si possa sentire a casa anche a migliaia di chilometri di distanza.

L’ambiente è familiare e confidenziale: è veramente un onore poter lavorare ed imparare da persone così esperte e professionali. Quest’esperienza mi dà l’opportunità di mettermi alla prova ed entrare in contatto con una nuova realtà, pur mantenendo un legame con la mia Italia. È meraviglioso vedere come la nostra cultura sia così viva e apprezzata anche in questa terra affascinante e piena di risorse!

Viaggiare è ciò che rende l’uomo ricco, e non basterebbero nemmeno dieci vite per poter vedere tutte le bellezze di questo paese!

Eccomi alla mia prima esperienza, sia di vita che di lavoro in Australia. Mi chiamo Giandomenico, e sono nato a Treviso, una piccola città a soli trenta km da Venezia. Questa non è la mia prima esperienza all’estero, ma la prima in un’ambiente di lavoro molto rilassato e dove sono stato accolto come in una famiglia.

Vivo in un ancor più piccolo paese immerso nella campagna veneta, Preganziol, a metà strada tra Treviso e Venezia. Ho vissuto fin da piccolino all’interno di ambienti che riguardavano l’arte e lo spettacolo: mio padre mi ha sempre accompagnato a

vedere il “dietro le quinte” del suo lavoro di pittore, scenografo ed insegnante di architettura e mia madre lo stesso, essendo anch’esssa insegnante di architettura. Questa influenza mi ha fatto crescere ed appasionare all’arte e, sperando di poter lavorare in questo settore, in un paese ricco in cultura come l’Italia, ho quindi deciso di intraprendere, dopo le scuole superiori, questa via, sia di studio che di lavoro.

Ho studiato all’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia (quale città migliore per essere immersi nell’”Heritage” italiano) Economia e Gestione delle Arti per tre anni e per altri due anni Progettazione dei Sistemi Turistici. Durante questo lungo periodo di studio, ho lavorato per un’azienda che progetta e realizza mostre ed eventi culturali e per un’antiquario della città di Treviso ed in seguito ho collaborato sia con un’altra azienda che realizza eventi culturali sia con il Comune di Treviso, per la progettazione di un nuovo sistema turistico per la città stessa.

Nel frattempo mi sto dedicando alla mia prima passione, l’arte, ed ho iniziato, insieme ad altre persone, ad avviare una nuova attività in proprio per la creazione ed organizzazione di eventi culturali. Questo è un mio grande progetto, sia di vita che di lavoro, riuscire a creare un’impresa propria nel mondo della cultura in Italia, e perchè no? anche all’estero.

Ma cosa mi ha portato a lavorare per il Co.As.It. – Italian Language Centre? La voglia di intraprendere un’esperienza vicina alle mie passioni ed una scommessa con me stesso. Infatti ho da sempre ritenuto che qualsiasi sia il percorso da noi fatto, questo porterà sempre ad un miglioramento in noi stessi nel futuro. Perciò eccomi qui, sicuro di portare al mio ritorno in Italia una grande esperienza di vita e di lavoro.

The Italian Language Centre hosts three engaging professional development days in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Cairns.

The Italian Language Centre is a division of Co.As.It. Community Services and has a long tradition supporting teachers of Italian and Italian language programs in schools throughout Queensland.

Each year part of the support entails hosting engaging professional development sessions for teachers of Italian in Queensland schools.

The professional development program for 2014 promised Italian teachers an opportunity to enjoy a variety of cultural and linguistic ‘bites’ (una occasione italianissima per ‘gustare’ insieme degli allettanti ‘assaggini’ culturali e linguistici).

A total of 65 teachers from State, Catholic and Independent schools, attended three Professional Development days held on Friday 7 March at ILC in Brisbane, on Saturday 8 March at the University of the Sunshine Coast (in association with Education Queensland) and on Wednesday 12 March in Cairns (in association with Catholic Education Services diocese of Cairns).

The first PD day (7 March) at the newly refurbished ILC Centre in Newmarket, Brisbane, was opened by the President of Co.As.It. Community Services, Cavaliere Nereo Brezzi.

He welcomed the teachers and confirmed the commitment of Co.As.It. – ILC to continue supporting Italian programs in schools even though the funding from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been severely curtailed.

The three professional development days were presented by ILC Language Course Coordinator, Marzia Mauro, and ILC

Program Officer, Rosella Dermedgoglou. Between them they have over 50 years language teaching experience in a wide range of contexts, from pre-primary to senior, and from adult beginners through to advanced levels.

Having identified areas of interest to teachers, Marzia and Rosella put together a program which focussed on teaching strategies and cultural content designed to enhance the teaching of Italian in Queensland classrooms.

At each of the three days the morning session began with ‘Parliamo di Pronuncia’ – a segment which focussed on strategies to teach correct Italian pronunciation which is so vital in sounding authentic.

This was followed by two segments (‘Paroline alla Grande’ and ‘Navigando nel Passato’) which highlighted engaging strategies to teach grammar points.

Throughout the sessions, the presenters demonstrated the use of songs as important teaching tools which allow students to practise and consolidate at each step along their language learning journey.

The final session ended with an interactive, uplifting song (La danza per la Panza) which brought together all the aspects addressed throughout the Professional Development day.

Feedback from the day indicated a high level of satisfaction on behalf of participants.

Sounds of laughter are a clear indication that people are having a good time. This was the case on the evening of Friday, 4 April 2014 when numerous ILC students congregated at the Italian Language Centre, Newmarket, for the first ILC movie get-together of the year.

The choice of film was a romantic comedy directed by Fausto Brizzi ‘Com’è bello far l’amore’ (‘Love is in the air’) and was a crowd favourite at the Lavazza Italian Film Festival 2012.

From 6:45pm onwards, the Italian pizzaiolo (pizza maker) Stefano, began delivering delicious wood-fired pizzas from the ‘da Stefano’ trattoria downstairs.

Before settling down to watch the film, ILC teachers got everyone into a light-hearted mood by encouraging them to join in with singing the interactive action song ‘La Zia

di Forlì. The buoyant mood continued with the screening of “Com’è bello far l’amore” – a hilarious comedy about a staid couple whose lives are turned upside-down by the arrival of a former friend who unbeknownst to them, has become a popular porn film star.

The viewing of films in Italian (with English subtitles) provides valuable aural practise for students learning the language.

Co.As.It. will encourage clients/care recipients to utilise an advocate of their choice to ensure that clients/care recipients receive the best possible service.

All clients/care recipients and potential clients/care recipients, may choose to involve an advocate to represent his or her interests at any time as accepted practice by this organisation.

The organisation:• Offers each client/care recipient the opportunity to nominate an advocate

• Accepts the involvement of an advocate of the client’s/care recipient’s choice whenever this is the wish of the client/ care recipient

• Has developed links with advocacy groups in its area and informs clients/care recipients of the availability of such assistance

Procedure:• At point of first contact with the client/care recipient, prior to assessment, clients/care recipients are verbally advised of their right to have someone to represent their interests and help them with complaints, disputes or any aspects of service delivery if they wish

• The agency maintains a register of service providers and agencies that provide advocacy services

• Clients/care recipients are to be reminded of their right to use an advocate on subsequent visits and contacts, along with their other rights associated with the services they may receive

• The agency documents informal feedback as a quality assurance measure to ensure the service provided to the client/care recipient meets their needs
