2013 North Central District Schools Triathlon in Boortby Sam Withington

On Wednesday the 6th of March 2013 there was a triathlon in Boort run by Boort District School for theNorth Central District. The triathlon brought in participants from eight different schools includingWycheproof, Charlton, Wedderburn, Donald, Birchip, Pyramid Hill and St Arnaud. This triathlon was likeany other triathlon - it had a swim, then a ride and then a run. There were two ways to enter the triathlon, you could either enter it individually or you could do it as a group. The weather got up around the mid 30’sso it was almost perfect weather for such an event.

Previously the triathlon was held in Wycheproof but they decided to have it in Boort this year as we havethe Lake and everyone can swim an open 300 metre leg in one fell swoop rather than taking it in turns toswim in a pool. The run and the ride course were held around the Lake which meant the competitors couldjump in and cool off in the middle of their run or ride. This also made it easier on the runners and riders asthey knew roughly where to go after a few laps of the lake. The bike ride was the longest leg as it was onthe bitumen road all the way, while the run was a bit shorter because it was held on the walking trackaround the lake..

This photo is the transition area next to theSki Club for the swim, the ride and the runand also the start and the finish line.

EASTER TOURNAMENT REPORTThe weather was very kind to us over all four days of the Tournament - couldn't have reallyasked for anything better.

The number of actual players was down on normal numbers - actually only about 300 players, butthe players appeared to play in more events.

Socially, the club did very well. Lots of Spit Roast teas (Thankyou,Ken Loader) were served on the Saturday night prior to the TriviaNight and the Club was pleased with Sunday night's Steak and Saladtea numbers prior to The Last Man Standing.

Lee Lanyon and Sally Keeble did a great job heading the Social Committee, whilst theTournament Committee (Adam Potter, Judy Parker, Lorraine Smith, Glenda Bird, LeeLanyon, Lynette Clark and Alister McDougal) were kept busy prior to and throughout theweekend. All Boort Lawn Tennis Club members, and some non-members, can be congratulated ontheir efforts in making the participants welcome, and keeping them well fed and entertainedover the four days of Easter in our town.

The courts were again in great shape, so thankyou to Rob and Gaye Sim for their workthroughout the season.

All-in-all, a great weekend financially for the Club and no doubt a number of the town's businesshouses welcomed the influx of visitors too.

MURRAY TO MOYNE

Woody's Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay was held on the weekend of the 6th and 7th April 2013.Boort District Health participated and once again raised a fantastic amount of money for theHospital. So far the team has raised over $15,000.00 which will benefit not only residents of Boortbut the surrounding community. This year we had 12 riders: Lawrence Cameron, Patricia O'Sullivan, Deanne Smith, Garry Doyle,Carmen Cauchi, Cathy Ballis, Michelle Miller, Christine Mann, Denise Alexander, Des Flynn and ofcourse our team leader Dr Ashraf Takla. The riders had ideal conditions with a tail wind all the way, getting into Hamilton on Saturday nightat around 11:30 pm. The team left Hamilton to make their way to Port Fairy at 7:00 am withthankfully an extra hours sleep due to the end of Day Light Saving. All members of the team crossed the finish line exhausted but also elated from a wonderfulachievement. Thankyou to the amazing support crew who are with them for every kilometre thatis pedalled, which in itself is a mammoth effort. Many people have supported the team this year and sincere thanks must go to everyone whohelped, including those that sold raffle tickets, everyone who participated in some way at theride-in at Boort with either cooking the barbecue, manning the merry-go-round, selling raffletickets, serving the barbecue & drinks, face painting, drawing the raffle, setting up, packing up andalso providing PA equipment.Thankyou to the caterers who fed our hungry riders and crew, and also those that donated thefood for the BBQ's down the street and on the day of the ride-in.But most of all we would like to thank everyone who supported this great fundraising event forBoort District Health with either sponsorship, donations of prizes for the raffle, and of course themany hundreds of people who bought raffle tickets.Well done and I'm sure everyone will be gearing up for another go next year.

Boort Senior Football ReportThe Boort Football Club the season got underway on April 20th against Birchip-Watchem at Birchip.Under warm conditions for a winter sport, with Birchip/Watchem already having agame under their belt, and with a team that consisted of a number of new names therewas always an air of uncertainty about how the teams would go.The result was two wins. The Reserves looked impressive, the Seniors for half a

game looked the same, and Boort came away with two wins.It certainly was the start the Club was looking for. That brings us to week 3 of the season, our firsthome game. We host St Arnaud, and with plenty of leg speed, they certainly will test the fitness ofthe Boort teams. We invite supporters, members, sponsors and their families to the game.We would also love to see you stay on and meet some of our new (and not so new players)following the game. The club is putting on a two course meal (Spit Roast and Dessert) and wouldlove to see all its supporters there.

Memberships are available by visiting the club website at www.boortfc.sportingpulse.net/ orcontact Stacey Rhook on 0418 590 273.

“A CHAT WITH OLD FRIENDS”

We are pleased to announce that Professor Geoffrey Blainey has written the foreword tothe book. The printing is progressing well and the lay out of the book is looking good.

The Chats which have been published in previous “About Boort” Newsletters are beingpublished in a book along with around 100 photos relating to the stories.

Many of these photos have not been seen before.Several of the “Chatees” have since passed away, and so their life stories become even

more precious. It is hoped to have the book launch on a Sunday afternoon in July.More details later.

JOBS SUMMIT HELD IN BOORT

A major jobs summit for the Loddon Mallee region held at Boort last week highlighted how muchtraining was available from the Federal Government for people wanting to work in rural Victoria. The event was a first step in implementing a new economic and employment push by theCommonwealth known as the AgriFood National Regional Initiatives. An Australian ‘first’, AgriFood NRI aims to confront the ingrained employment and jobretention problems so prevalent in regional communities. It involves three Shires across the region – Loddon, Buloke and Gannawarra. Here in Loddon Shire, much of our farm work is seasonal, so we need people who aremulti-skilled, able to work on different farms at different times of the year.We wish Loddon Mallee Regional Development Manager Graeme Lynas well in his efforts tobuild on this highly promising start.

STUDY OF ACCOMMODATION FACILITIES , FOR VISITING TOURISTS WITH DISABILITIES

Loddon Shire is pushing ahead with plans to make it easier for people with a disability to visit theregion.Rural Access officer Jolie Middleton wants to hear from community members willing to help form tworeference groups which will eventually develop an action plan to assess the accommodation optionsavailable. She is looking for volunteers to represent both the Northern and Southern parts of the Shire, preferably people with a disability or experience of disability.

“Ideally, I would like to have from one to five volunteers for each reference group, to sit alongside aCouncil tourism officer, an occupational therapist and myself,” Ms Middleton said.“This is a project that Rural Access and the Shire’s tourism staff are doing together.”“The purpose is not only to look at issues of physical access, but also access to information about thoseproviders and how that information gets out.”Once the reference group has worked out its approach, members will visit as many accommodationproviders in the municipality as possible to assess their accessibility and advise their operators.Once their reports have been finalised, Council will produce an Accessible Accommodation Guide fordistribution across the Shire. It’s hoped this will be completed by next spring.Ms Middleton said she also wanted to hear from accommodation providers keen to be involved in theproposed guide. “You will certainly be promoting your business to a much broader customer base, with 18.5 per cent of Australians now known to have a disability,” she said.“This figure does not even include those who have a temporary disability due to injury or illness atany given time.”“People with disabilities are loyal customers for establishments which cater for their needs – and thatmeans a large amount of return visits and additional business through word of mouth promotion.”

Ms Middleton’s position is funded under the Department of Human Services’ Community BuildingProgram, to cover both the City of Greater Bendigo and Loddon Shire. She divides her time between the two.

.Young ambitions revealedFive Boort Year 11 students recently met to analyse data collected from almost 1,000 year 7-12students across the region. They were pleased to see that 79 percent of Boort students rated theircommunity excellent to very good to live in.The survey was conducted as part of a pilot project called Operation Next Gen involving the townsof Boort, Birchip and Cohuna. The purpose of the survey was to better understand our youth and thecommunity and their future plans.Data was collected by the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship in the United States providing theopportunity to contrast results with rural students across the world.“It gives it a global feel,” said Anya Eicher, a member of the Student Representative Council.Similar questions put to adults across the region revealed that young people are thinkingdifferently.“Adults expect us to be more interested in agriculture,” observed School Captain, Jessica Pay.The number one preferred career choice of students was Education or Training followed by EarlyChildhood Development, Counselling or Care Services.“The survey provides a different understanding of what the younger generation wants than the oldergeneration,” agreed Darrell Dodd.60 percent of Boort students say that they plan to attend University. This was higher than the regionaverage.“Students are keen to go away to university but 55 percent picture themselves coming back in thefuture,” said Stephanie Couper.Interest in owning a business or going into the family business is much lower in Boort than the restof the region. While students appeared to have little understanding of entrepreneurism the adults surveyed Indicatedthat the main barriers were lack of encouragement, finance and business skills.

A common perception of young people is that local businesses are shutting down and the majority ofstudents think that they have to go to the city for a career. With increasing modern technology it is hopedthat this perception will change.“There is an opportunity to think more outside the box here,” concluded Raevan Grattan-Watson.Anyone wanting to learn more about the student survey and Operation Next Gen project can go towww.cllm.org.au/operationnextgen.htm or contact the Project Manager Kerry Anderson, on 03 5470-5122.
