Dear Parents and Caregivers
Year 7 and Year 9 students share their goals of working towards
Excellence.
Kate’s (Year 9) goal is to “get fit for soccer season”. In seven days
Kate will, “train hard and take care of my body”.
In the next 30 days she will “find things that can get me
motivated and things that make me happy”.
Astara’s (Year 9) goal is to “get an A on my Science assignment”.
In 7 days Astara will, “work hard and hand in drafts”. In the next
30 days she will “fully stay motivated”.
Billie’s (Year 7) goal is to “stay on top of my homework”. In
seven days Billie will, “do homework on the weekend”. In the
next 30 days she will “stay organised and keep motivated”.
Evy’s (Year 7) goal is to “improve maths skills”. In seven days
Evy will, “stay focused in class”. In the next 30 days she will “ask a
teacher for extension work”.
What is your child/children doing in the next 30 days to work towards
their goal? If you need some help with this, give the Year Advisor a
call during school hours or contact them through the Parent Portal.
Safety
At the top of our Work, Health and Safety agenda is the safety of our
students on bikes and in the traffic around our car park. We are
working on ways to improve the safety of our students. We are
changing the position of bike racks within the school grounds and
creating a bike track that circles around the car park. Please ensure
your child/children wear their helmets to and from school each day
and talk to them about not riding through the car park. There have
been some near misses. We will be addressing all students on an
upcoming school assembly. A fine for not wearing your helmet is
$357.00. Help us improve safety for our students.

Agriculture Week
Pictured is the Aquaponics System at the Agriculture section. The Year 12 Agriculture class recently planted
vegetable seedlings into the new clay pebbles recently installed which replaced the original substrate. The
tanks hold Jade Perch which were placed in as fingerlings but now weigh around 2kg. The fish waste is
pumped to the vegetable beds and filtered through the clay pebbles back to the fish tanks.
Included are photos in 2011 of the Year 10 Agriculture students setting up the Aquaponics system when it
arrived. Since then many Year 10 Agriculture students have capably managed the Aquaponics system for
their Independent Learning Project. The Year 10 Agriculture students of 2018 are now developing planning
and managing their area in the Agriculture section for their Project Based Learning. Students can select
from areas such as Aquaponics; Flower gardens; Ornamental plants; Native Plants; Layer Poultry; Dairy
Goats; Budgerigars and Cavies.

Swimming Carnival 2018 Congratulations to our swimmers who made it to Far North Coast and our 2018 Age Champions, but
mostly congratulations to all those students who showed up and took part in the day.
Age Champions: Boys 12 years- Lawson Shirley, 13 years - Jarra Millis 14 years - Tex Hembrow,
15 years - Alby Kay, 16 years - Beau Carter, 17 years - Zakai Boutkan-Sparkes. Girls 12 years - Sophia Sezer,

Year 8 Students conducted an experiment that tested how sunlight affects photosynthesis.
They covered part of a leaf with aluminium foil and left out in the sun for a couple of days.Then tested that
leaf to see if there was a difference between the parts of the leaf that were covered and the part left
exposed to sunlight.

Year 7 Year 7 have been conducting experiments to compare the boiling points of salt and fresh water, they then
used this data to develop their graphing skills

PDHPE News
This term in PDHPE, Years 7-10 are undertaken the annual Byron Bay High School Aquatics program.
Water safety plays a significant role in the lives of all Australians and the school swimming program aims
to develop basic water survival skills, stroke development and opportunities to experience a variety of
water sports such as waterpolo and water aerobics.
All students will undertake a water safety challenge as required by the Department of Education as a
prerequisite for future school excursions involving swimming activities. The test involves five elements:
Entry – slide entry into shallow water and walk five metres
Survival Swimming – 25m swim with recognisable strokes
Survival Sequence – Scull, float or tread water for 1 minute, call out for help once
Exit – exit the water unassisted
Rescue Sequence – demonstrate a simple voice rescue
Students unable to participate due to medical conditions will need to provide a medical certificate to the
school. These students will be unable to join in any swimming activities on school excursions as they will
not have met the Department of Education’s requirements. Students who are sick and unable to
participate for a lesson must supply a note from their parents.
According to the Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report 2017, 291 people died as a result of
drowning in Australia in the 2016/17 financial year. This is a 3% increase on the 282 drowning deaths in
2015/16.
In recent times, the Queensland Education minister has also been talking about the re-introduction of

CAPA NEWS Drama
It will be an exciting Term in Drama. Zeal Theatre Company are making the trip from Sydney to Byron Bay
High again this year to perform their production of “The Stones” in the PAC on 23 March. All Drama
students are invited to attend. After watching the performance of this gripping play based on a true story
about two teens on trial for reckless behaviour leading to tragic consequences, students will participate in
a Q & A session with the actors. They will then engage in actor-led performance workshops for the rest of
the day. The cost is $25 to be paid to the front office with the returned permission note by Friday 16th
March. This is a highly recommended experience for all Drama students from Years 9-12. Year 9 students
study the play “The Stones” as part of their course work.
In addition, the class auditions and interviews for roles in cast and crew of the 2018 Year11 production of
“War Crimes” by Angela Betzien will be held next week. 21 Year 11 Drama students will audition or be
interviewed for acting and technical roles in this demanding project which will showcase after 3 months of
hard work in late Term 2. We have a difficult act to follow after 2017’s Year11 production of “100” which
was sold out for every performance.

Byron Bay High School PDHPE Uniform policy
At Byron Bay High School, wearing the PDHPE uniform is important for many reasons. The four main reasons
include:
1. It is a symbol of equality among students
2. It demonstrates mutual respect
3. It shows affiliation to the school
4. It is more hygienic
All students are required to wear the prescribed uniform correctly during practical lessons in PDHPE, PASS and
SLR, as well as when representing the school. All clothing items should be clearly labelled to reduce lost or
misplaced uniforms.
The Byron Bay High School uniform consists of the following items, all of which can be purchased from the
uniform shop located at school.
Teal sports polo with navy collar and school logo. The PDHPE faculty recommend that students have
at least two shirts.
Navy blue or black shorts preferably with the school embroidery.
Navy blue Byron Bay High School track pants and/or Navy-Blue Hoody with the school logo if
required in cooler weather.
Additionally, the following items are recommended for wear.
A hat in compliance with the sun safety in school policy.
Sun screen – some is available at school for outdoor PDHPE, PASS and SLR lessons
Appropriate running shoes.
The purpose of the running shoe is to support the person's feet and ankles. Slip-on shoes do not achieve this
purpose and are a safety concern.
Representative teams are urged to wear the appropriate team uniforms and sports uniforms on the day of
competition.
PDHPE Uniform Expectations
1. The full PE uniform must be worn to participate in practical lessons.
2. The uniform should not be worn at any other time unless it is the relevant sports day for that student.
3. When the uniform cannot be worn for a good reason, parents/carers are asked to notify the teacher in
writing with a signed note. The note should be dated, and a contact number provided. This note must
be handed to the teacher before the lesson.
4. All students must change back into the correct school uniform at the end of the practical lesson,
except on the allocated school sport day.
Students who do not meet the expectations of the uniform policy may be given a restitution task to complete as
an alternative to the practical lesson, where instructed by the teacher in charge. Students may also receive
recess or lunch detentions.
PDHPE is a compulsory subject and students who do not participate on a regular basis will put themselves at
risk of not meeting the outcomes of this course. This could result in students not receiving a Record of School
Achievement (ROSA) award at the end of Year 10, or HSC qualifications in Stage 6 SLR.

Visual Art News All Visual Art students are off to a great start and most have the required equipment and art diaries.
However some students still require an art diary. Year 7 and 8 need an A4 diary, able to be purchased at
newsagents of similar and Yr 9,10,11,11,12 require an A3 diary which can be purchased at the front office of
the school.
It is expected that all students come to class with a pencil case full of goodies that are great for making art
ie. 2-6B drawing pencil, glue sticks, artline pen, erasers etc.

Music News DAY 4 Music Sessions
Live music performances on Day 4 lunch have started up again this year outside the CAPAL block with the
first session last Tuesday showcasing our homegrown talent in the form of wild year 10 rock band ‘East
Atlantic’ on top form, Shea Mulligan (Year 12) with a well polished solo ballad and a couple of numbers by
Year 12 Jake Harpaz.
Year 12 VET Entertainment students did a professional job of setting up, producing and clearing away the
event, showing increasing initiative and responsibility.
Any students (any age) wishing to perform should talk to Music staff and get booked in. The sessions
happen every Day 4 at lunch.
School Band
We have had a huge response from our new Year 7 musicians who would like to join our ever growing
school band this year. School band meets every Tuesday lunchtime in room 27 and all members new and
old should attend. Please set a reminder on your phone or even get a parent to text you. Bring your lunch
for a 1.30 pm start.
Bluesfest 2018
Any performers or bands who would like to perform at Bluesfest this year as part of our involvement with
the Highschool showcase should prepare to audition in the next couple of weeks. See music staff for more
details.
Indent Tour 2018 / The Vanns
Year 12 VET entertainment students are participating in a professional development workshop this week,
run by the organisation MusicNSW in partnership with Byron YAC to develop, promote and produce a live
music event on Sunday 25 March, with surf rock band The Vanns headlining and The Nah as support. The
aim of the event is to promote and provide live music events in rural areas for young people in a safe, drug
and alcohol free environment. This is a fabulous real-life opportunity for the students to gain music
industry and live events experience. See the poster and put the night in your diaries. Its going to be an
awesome night.

Young Songwriters Competition Open for Entries! It’s that time of year - time to pick up your instrument, get your creativity flowing and pen a song for the
annual Lismore Young Songwriters Competition. The 8th Lismore Young Songwriters Competition helps
regional young songwriters to showcase their song writing and performance talents with a Finalists
performance and awards night held during Youth Week in April.
This year’s Competition is set to be huge with a stack of awesome prizes including Røde Microphones,
paid live gigs and professional recording time. Entry is free and is open to all Northern Rives residents
aged 12-25 years. This year’s categories are:
Jazz/Soul/Funk
Punk/Metal
Urban/Electronic/Hip Hop
Folk / Country / Blues
Pop / Rock / Indi
You can enter as many songs as you like. But you’d better get writing! Entries close at 5.00 pm on
26 March 2018.
Three finalists will be chosen per category to perform at the Awards night in front of the judging panel
and a live audience. The judges will award a best male and a best female songwriter of the year and also
winners for each category. There will also be a People’s Choice Award. This year, our finalists will battle it
out at Southern Cross University’s flagship performance and production facility - Studio One29 on
Friday 13 April.
To enter the competition, submit your entry in MP3 format with lyrics attached as a Word document,
include an artist photo and bio and email to [email protected]
The Lismore Young Songwriters Competition is proudly supported by Social Futures, headspace Lismore,
Southern Cross University, The Northern Rivers Conservatorium, The Youth Connections Clubhouse and

Ocean Film Festival - Byron Bay
Wednesday 7th March Student Screening at 10.00 am.
Students in Year 9 and those studying Global Studies (Year 9 and 10) or Marine Studies (Year 11) have the
opportunity to view an exclusive screening of the Ocean Film Festival when it shows in Byron Bay.
Students will be given permission notes during their classes this week to be returned with payment at the
front office ASAP. Places are limited to 120 seats and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
At the Ocean Film Festival World Tour our vision is to inspire you to explore, respect, enjoy, and protect
our oceans. Film is at the heart of the Ocean Film Festival World Tour and we aim to share the best films
from around the globe with our audiences.
In March 2018 the Ocean Film Festival World Tour will screen over 2 hours of the most inspirational,
educational and entertaining films related to the ocean from independent film makers both international
and Australian.
The Ocean Film Festival World Tour includes a unique selection of films of varying lengths and styles
covering topics such as the oceanic environment, marine creatures, ocean related sports, coastal cultures
and ocean lovers.
