“Ride Along 2” raked in $34 million for the three-day weekend, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said Sunday, while revenge film “The Revenant” earned $29.5 million. The latest installment of the popular “Star Wars” saga came in at $25.1 million in its fifth week, boosting it to a worldwide total take of $1.86 billion, third highest ever.

“Ride Along 2” soared to first place in its first week of release, appearing in 3,175 North American theaters.

The film features funny man Kevin Hart as a rookie law officer who aspires to become a detective like his future brother-in-law, played by rapper and actor Ice Cube, as the two become embroiled with a murderous Miami drug ring. The original “Ride Along” movie, with the same stars, set an opening-weekend record in January 2014, netting $41.6 million.

“The Revenant,” in its fourth week in theaters, got a certain boost from news of its nomination for 12 Oscars, most of any film. The movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio

as a legendary fur trapper, has already won Golden Globes for Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro Gon-zalez Inarritu) and Best Actor (DiCaprio). (afp)

LOS ANGELES — The investigative journalism drama “Spotlight” won the top prize at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, while awards favorites Brie Larson and Leonardo DiCaprio won the top acting prizes for “Room” and “The Revenant.”

Both actors won Golden Globe Awards and are consid-ered front-runners for the Academy Awards, too.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” was the most nominated film of the evening with 13 nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics’ Association. While it lost out for the top prize, it did win a number of awards, including Best Director for George Miller, best action movie, and best action movie actor and actress for Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.

The financial crisis dramedy “The Big Short,” mean-while, won for best comedy and best comedic actor for star Christian Bale, who kissed both his wife and director Adam McKay on his way up to the stage to accept his award. Both were up for best picture Oscar heavyweights like “Spotlight,” ‘’The Revenant” and “The Martian,” as well as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which was

added after initial nominees were announced and went home empty handed on Sunday.

“Star Wars” director J.J. Abrams was in attendance to present the Genius Award to Industrial Light & Magic, which Chief Creative Officer John Knoll accepted.

But it was “Spotlight’s” night in the end. The film also picked up Best Acting Ensemble, winning out over films like “Straight Outta Compton” and “The Hateful Eight.”

It was the only award that N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” was up for at the show, but the film was on everyone’s minds on the blue carpet and in the early mo-ments of the evening after it received only one Academy Award nomination for screenwriting just days earlier.

“They got snubbed, but there are lots of other great films that got snubbed as well,” said Neil Brown Jr. before the show began. Brown Jr. played DJ Yella in the film which has picked up its share Guild nominations this season. “Just everybody talking about it is enough of an Oscar for us,” he added. (ap)

Kris cited the example of the powerful earthquake that took place in Japan’s Tokyo Bay on March 11th, 2011. About 85 percent of the city of Urayasu, that was built on reclaimed land in the 1960’ -in a very similar way that the reclaimed island of Serangan Island in Denpasar was built not too long ago, suffered extreme damage. “Infrastructure, houses and roads were severely damaged by liquefaction due to the earthquake. Likewise, the 1996 earthquake in Kobe, resulted in severe liqui-fication and ground fissures of 15 to 20 meters in reclaimed areas,” explained Kris.

Disaster researcher from UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, Dr. Eko Teguh Paripurno, said that the risk of flooding in Benoa Bay in-creases every year due to the environmental degradation that is taking place upstream of the bay. In order to reduce the risk of flood-ing in Benoa Bay, the upstream area needs to be attended to. “By allowing backfilling and sedimentation and thus reducing the 1988 hectares of the bay to just 700 hectares and reducing the watershed reservoir 5 fold only increases the risk of Benoa Bay flooding,” stated Paripurno.

This man familiarly known as ET, suggest-ed that if efforts are to be made to improve the quality of environmental conditions, they should be done by increasing the number of watersheds, creating erosion catchment channels, planting suitable vegetation, creat-

ing absorption wells in the watersheds and frequently dredging the bay and other water flow areas. Such efforts would be far more appropriate ways of addressing the threat of flooding, than backfilling (reclaiming) Benoa Bay would be.

“Benoa Bay is located in a disaster-prone area with very limited access to roads and buildings that would be needed in the case of an emergency. Reclamation of the bay will increase population density and limited access to rescue routes would mean a much higher risk of problems in the case of a tsu-nami,” he added.

ET also mentioned that the Environmental Impact Assessment (Amdal) document for the Benoa Bay reclamation plan remains incomplete and only mentions preparation for the land by backfilling, but makes no reference to the construction process and operations.

For example, there are issues related to the mining required for the project, in terms of both permitting and the lack of prepara-tion for the increase in silt-clay suspension, explained ET. Likewise, there is no scenario for how to handle the impacts that the project would have on beaches and coastal areas. Risk management, he said, needs to include the impact on environmental degradations and local people’s income. “There will be a reduction in the ownership of community assets and this in itself is a disaster. This will happen in Lombok, (Ed. where many of the materials are being taken from),” he explained.

ET, reiterated that there are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the rec-lamation plan: “Are relevant parties being represented? What kind scenarios have been envisioned for managing the risk of environ-mental degradation and the impact that this

will have on people’s ability to access their natural resources and earn a living during the reclamation process? What kind of scenarios have been envisioned for managing the risk of ongoing conflicts of interest between diver-gent parties?” asked ET soberly. (rin)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Taman air Spa managed by Avilla Hospitality celebrated its fourth anniversary, Wednesday (Jan. 13). With the theme “Be a Lo-cal Champion” taken from one of the missions and visions of the Taman Air Spa, all the staff and employees as well as invitees looked more intimate and full of familial atmosphere. The event taking place from 19:00 to 21:00 with the shades of turquoise blue was attended by internal ranks of the Taman Air Spa, Avilla and the units managed by the Avilla.

Commenced with a joint prayer, the event was then filled in with a speech from Darma Suyasa as the General Manager of the Avilla, Henry Setiono as Chief Operating Officer of the Avilla and Ni Wayan Pastini as the Opera-tions Manager of the Taman Air Spa followed by a meal together. At the same time, there was an awarding to the best employee of the year 2015. Two employees were elected to achieve the award and another award for the best groom-ing category.

Ni Wayan Pastini said that in celebration of the fourth anniversary she hoped the spa property can always become an option for all markets. “Taman Air Spa has been running for four years and remains in the process to move forward. Therefore, in the celebration of the fourth anniversary, we do hope to become a local champion in Bali, especially for the spa business,” she said.

She then invited all the staff and employees to be more active so that the Taman Air Spa can achieve the targets and always provide the best for all customers, especially in terms of services and quality.

“If Benoa Bay is reclaimed, the water reservoirs there will certainly be dramatically reduced. As a result, the area just east of Benoa Bay could very well sink into the ocean,” said Chairman of LPM Kedonganan, Ketut Budana, who participanted in the discussion held at Penggak Men Mersi, Friday (Jan. 15).

Budana added that property inves-tors are not needed in dealing with

the matter of waste management and sedimentation, especially given that the district of Badung has abun-dant regionally generated revenues (PAD). Some of this revenue could certainly be set aside for improving the condition of Benoa Bay.

“We do not need this reclamation, it’s quite enough preserve the man-grove forests, dredge out sediment. The soil sediment that is dredged out could

be used to restore the soil on Pudut Island, for example,” added Budana.

Budana also pointed out that apart from environmental issues, creating new tourists destinations on the reclaimed island would also bring its own set of problems that would disrupt the local community, especially those in Kedonganan, which is why the people of Kedon-ganan recently recently organized a protest of the Benoa Bay reclama-tion plan.

Secretary of Tanjung Benoa cus-tomary village, Made Berata, said that the people of his village are also committed to rejected the reclama-tion plan on any grounds, including the dubious excuse of disaster miti-gation. “Getting back to the question of whether the reclamation of Benoa

Bay would serve to mitigate disaster or not, I will share this: I was born during a westerly wind and water came into my house. At that time -in 1973, there was no sedimenta-tion in Benoa Bay but the water was already angle to reach that high. If Benoa Bay is reclaimed, the water on the bay will definitely rise and we will be submerged,” he said.

The rejection was also confirmed by the Sabha chief of Tanjung Benoa, Wayan Kartika confirmed that they reject the reclamation plan. According to Kartika, the people of Tanjung Benoa are not interested in speculating on whether or not disaster mitigation is a good excuse to reclaim the bay -anyone who believes that is fooling themselves, he said. BEnOa Bay is indeed facing serious problems due to pol-lution, garbage and sedimentation, during FOrBali’s recent public discussion: “revealing the myths of Disaster mitigation in Benoa Bay reclamation”, however, it was pointed out that reclamation is not the answer. infact, quite the contrary, the reclamation of Benoa Bay would cause even more problems including an increased risk of flooding and the disruption the economy of the local community.

NEW YORK — The remains of a mammoth that was hunted down about 45,000 years ago have re-vealed the earliest known evidence of humans in the Arctic.

Marks on the bones, found in far northern Russia, indicate the creature was stabbed and butchered. The tip of a tusk was damaged in a way that suggests human activity, perhaps to make ivory tools.

With a minimal age estimate of 45,000 years, the discovery extends the record of human presence in the Arctic by at least about 5,000 years.

The site in Siberia, near the Kara Sea, is also by far the northernmost sign of human presence in Eurasia before 40,000 years ago, Vladimir Pitulko of the Russian Academy of Science in St. Petersburg and co-authors reported in a paper released Thursday by the journal Science.

They also briefly report evidence of human hunting at about the same time from a wolf bone found well to the east. That suggests a widespread occupation, although the population was probably sparse, they said.

Daniel Fisher, a mammoth expert at the University of Michigan who

did not participate in the study, said the markings on the mammoth bone strongly indicate human hunting. It makes sense to conclude that the hunters were from our own species rather than Neanderthals, John Hoffecker of the University of Colorado at Boulder commented in an email.

But Robert Park, an archaeolo-gist at the University of Waterloo in Canada who has studied the bones of hunted animals in the far north, called the evidence for human hunt-ing “pretty marginal.” The beast had been found with remains of its fat hump, while hunters would be expected to take the fat for food and fuel, he said. And the skeleton shows far less butchering than one would expect, he said.

Park emphasized he’s not ruling out the idea that the mammoth was hunted.

If people were living this far north that long ago, he said, it im-plies they had not only the techni-cal abilities to carry out mammoth hunts, but also a social organization complex enough to share the food from the relatively rare kills. (ap)

An international team revealed “the most powerful supernova observed in human history” Thurs-day in the latest Science journal. The astronomers used a network of telescopes around the world to spot the record-breaking supernova last year.

Super luminous supernovas — extra bright stellar explosions — are believed to be rare. The newly discovered supernova is especially rare: It is more than twice as lumi-nous as any supernova observed to date, including the previous record-holders.

At its peak intensity, it is be-lieved to be 20 times more lumi-nous than the entire Milky Way. Some estimates put it at 50 times brighter.

And try this statistic on for size: It is 570 billion times brighter at its peak than our sun.

Lead author Subo Dong of China’s Peking University said when he learned the magnitude of the discovery last summer, he was “too excited to sleep the rest of the night.” Fellow researcher Benjamin Shappee of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Pasadena, California, didn’t believe the results at first, which seemed “surreal.”

“Discoveries like this are the reason I am an astronomer,” Shap-pee said in an email. “Nature is ex-tremely clever and it is often more imaginative than we can be.”

Labeled ASASSN-15lh for the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae and pronounced “as-

sassin,” the mega blast is located in a galaxy perhaps 3.8 billion light-years away. The precise galaxy is unknown. There are other puzzles as well.

“The explosion’s mechanism and power source remain shrouded in mystery because all known theories meet serious challenges in explain-ing the immense amount of energy ASASSN-15lh has radiated,” Dong said in a statement.

The next step for scientists is to figure out its incredible power source. Other super supernovas, like this one, could be out there. More observatories are on the case, including some NASA spacecraft. The Hubble Space Telescope will be pressed into service this year as well.

Dong said ASASSN-15lh “may lead to new thinking and new obser-vations of the whole class of super luminous supernova.” (ap)

“Admission ticket is sold for IDR 20,000 (adult) and IDR 15,000 (child) including snack and soft drink,” said a security guard of the Inspiration Park, Agung Puja, while escorting Bali Post to enter the park.

Ticket counter to the Inspiration Park area is connected by a sturdy wooden bridge. Some few visitors take pictures on this artistic bridge. Visitors are welcomed by a row of pines. A small pathway is provided for visitors to pass so that their legs will not be stained with sand.

“Many travelers from Taiwan and Korea come here to ride a horse or see camel,” said Agung Puja while taking to meet with the management. Management team of the Inspiration Park, I Wayan Dharma, said that the camels and horses are indeed deliberately brought in to support the existing tourism activities on the beach. A total of four horses and five camels are kept in the Inspiration Park area.

Camels are especially imported from Australia, but temporarily they cannot be ridden around the area like the horses.

“We will do maintenance first so that the camels can adapt,” said Dharma. According to him, visitors may not be discouraged because there are still other entertainments that can be enjoyed. For instance, visitors can play in a calm sea, ride canoe or ride a duck boat. Visitors coming with children are also pro-vided with a safe playground.

“We give priority to safety. Basically, all the activities here are insured. Water sports, horseback riding and all the other activities are insured,” said Dharma. So far, he added, the number of visitors coming here is still considered moderate. They mostly come in the afternoon on weekends. To that end, promotional efforts will be intensi-fied through cooperation with travel agencies.

exchanged for food. So far, it can be exchanged with snack and soft drink or chocolate ice and fried bananas,” said Dharma. Further, he said, the name of Inspiration Park is inseparable from location of the park remaining private and quiet. In addition, there is a big yet dry tree, used as the icon and focus of ‘find-ing an inspiration’ in the Inspiration Park. Such unique tree is also often used as background object of pre-wedding photo session.

Headman of Sanur Kauh, I Made Ada, said that the Inspiration Park was formerly like a landfill. Actu-ally the place held marine debris coming from the flow of Rangda River, Loloan River as well as from the sea. But after being managed by Intaran customary village, the con-dition of the Inspiration Park with the length of 1.5 km has become much cleaner.

“Other than marine activities, visitors can also enjoy mangrove tour. They can join the mangrove planting and enjoy the culinary delights supported with spacious parking area. Hopefully, visitors coming here can get inspirations on how to build the city of Denpasar,” he said. (kmb32)

BANGLI - Tegalasah hamlet, Tembuku, is well known as a center of wooden tray production, however over the last few years, business has been more and more sluggish and people’s purchasing power goes down. Some wooden tray craftsmen have are even fac-ing bankruptcy.

Nearly every house in Tegala-sah hamlet runs a wooden tray business, selling trays of different designs and colours. Sang Made Kolem, a 60 year local craftsmen and owner of UD Perwira, said that the region is so well known for their tray crafts that theses products are sold all over Bali, Lombok Jakarta and every hub of Balinese transmigration. “Our local products here have been sold to a number of regions in and outside of Bali,” said Kolem from his home studio.

He explained however that as the national economy has slowed down, his business has started to decline. Usually Kolem delivers his orders once a week and also has clients coming to his home. is year, however has seen dramatic decreases in his sales. “Such con-ditions have made many crafters anxious,” he said.

This grizzled man said that his

sales have slumped by as much as 50 percent and many of his fellow crafters may have to close their businesses. “The current condi-tion is really serious. I rarely make any trays these days. Many other crafter have nearly stopped producing anything at all,” said Kolem.

Headman of Tembuku, Ketut Mudiarsa, confirmed that tray artisans have been having trouble getting their hands on albizia wood so they have started work-ing with fiberglass which is haz-ardous to their health. “It is very difficult to find the raw materials that they need and when they do find it, it is very expensive so many have switched to fiber-glass,” he said.

Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, I Nengah Sudibia, explained there has been a decline in the sale of trays crafts in Bangli over the past year - es-pecially in Tegalasah where there is a lot of competition.

This official from Penglipuran hopes that innovations can be made to the trays so as to revive the market. “In order to be more competitive on the market, prod-uct innovation is required,” he concluded. (kmb45)

A Cold War-style standoff flared since the North’s claim on Jan. 6 that it had tested a hydrogen bomb. South Korea resumed blasting anti-Pyongyang propa-ganda broadcasts and K-pop songs from border loudspeakers. North Korea quickly responded by restarting its own border broadcasts and floating the balloons over the border carrying anti-South leaflets, ac-cording to Seoul officials.

Seoul’s Defense Ministry said Monday the North’s military has been sending the bal-loons on a near-daily basis. Spokesman Kim Min-seok said the leaflets have reached Seoul in addition to areas close to the border.

Such leafleting by the North is rare, as

the two Koreas officially stopped psycho-logical warfare as part of tension-reduction measures in 2004. South Korean activists have still occasionally sent propaganda balloons toward the North, triggering angry responses from the North.

South Korean officials believe their broadcasts will sting in the rigidly con-trolled, authoritarian country by demoral-izing frontline troops and residents. There are doubts in Seoul that the North Korean leaflets will have any impact on the public in more affluent South Korea.

Many foreign governments and analysts remain highly skeptical about the H-bomb claim, but whatever the North detonated

underground will likely push the country closer toward a fully functional nuclear arsenal, which it still is not thought to have. The North previously conducted atomic bomb tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

South Korea, the U.S. and other coun-tries are pushing hard to get North Korea punished over the bomb test. Soon after the test, diplomats at a U.N. Security Council pledged to swiftly pursue new sanctions on the North. But it’s unclear whether China, the North’s last major ally and a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, would cooperate on any tough sanctions that could force a change in the North.

The two Koreas share the world’s most heavily fortified border since their war in the early 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. About 28,500 American troops are deployed in South Korea as de-terrence against North Korea. (ap)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — All 60 people forced overboard after their tourist boat caught fire Monday off the coast of New Zealand have been rescued, according to authorities. Police spokeswoman Kim Perks said the fire aboard the vessel “PeeJay” broke out as it was returning from White Island to the town of Whakatane.

She said all 53 passengers and seven crew members were forced overboard to escape the fire and smoke. She said one passenger and one crew member were taken to a local hospital after suffering from minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

Perks said the boat was about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from shore when authorities were first notified of the incident, and they called on nearby boats to assist. She said the PeeJay crew then sent a mayday to say they were abandoning ship.

Perks said four other private vessels and the New Zealand Coastguard were able to get to the scene quickly and rescue everybody. She said the PeeJay later sank. White Island, 50 kilometers (31 miles) off the North Island coast, is volcanically active and popular with tourists.

White Island Tours, which operated the tourist boat, was not immediately available for comment. Whakatane resident Roger White told The Associated Press it was rain-ing at the time of the incident but he could see some of what unfolded from his home.

He said he saw some light smoke coming from the front of the vessel which then got heavier. After about 10 minutes, he said, the cabin burst into flames and fire quickly engulfed the ship.

He said it appeared some evacuated onto two small dinghies while he could see the figures of others still on board as the flames grew larger. He said it was hard to make out but believes those people must have then leaped into the water.

White said plenty of boats arrived quickly to help out, including a fishing boat and some charter boats, which assisted the Coastguard in the rescue. (ap)

BAGHDAD — The U.S. Embassy con-firmed Sunday that “several” Americans have gone missing in Iraq, after local media reported that three Americans had been kidnapped in the Iraqi capital.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Scott Bolz said, “We are working in full cooperation with Iraqi authorities to locate the miss-ing Americans.” Bolz did not identify the missing Americans or say what they were doing in Iraq.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said that “due to privacy considerations” he had nothing further to add about the miss-

ing Americans. “The safety and security of Americans abroad is our highest priority,” Kirby said.

The comments by U.S. officials came after the Arab news channel, al-Arabiya, citing its own sources, reported that three Americans had been kidnapped by militias in Baghdad.

Iraqi media reports said the Americans went missing in south Baghdad on their way to Baghdad International Airport. A Western security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media,

said Sunday that he had been told that three Americans went missing 24 to 48 hours ago.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility. Kidnappings in Iraq have been carried out by the Islamic State group and Shiite militias as well as criminal gangs demanding ransom payments or disgruntled employees seeking to resolve workplace disputes.

The incident comes after a week that has seen a deterioration of security in and around the Iraqi capital after months of relative calm. (ap)

Seoul: North Korea has sent 1 million propaganda leaflets

South Korean war veterans salute dur-ing a rally against North Korea in Seoul, South Korea, Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016. North Korea trumpets a hydro-gen bomb test. South Korea re-sponds by cranking up blasts of harsh propaganda from giant green speak-ers aimed across the world’s most dangerous border. The placards read “Anti-North Ko-rea loudspeaker ? Leaflets? Kim Jong Un is smiling! and An eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, Nu-clear for nuclear”.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has launched an estimated 1 mil-lion propaganda leaflets by balloon into South Korea amid increased tension between the rivals following the North’s recent nuclear test, Seoul officials said Monday.

One of the local farmers, I Ketut Baret, 60, said that his land of 1,500 square meters has not been planted yet as getting no water so far. He claimed that as long as becoming a farmer it is the first time for him to be unable to plant paddy in rainy season because there is no water.

Regarding this condition, chief

of Subak Sakeh overseeing the Subak Belatung, Wayan Rupug, said that the drought at Subak Be-latung happens due to the impact of prolonged dry season in 2015. Moreover, it did not rain evenly in the Tabanan region. To overcome this, Rupug stated that he wanted to borrow a water pump in the

Agriculture Agency to take water from the Yeh Abe River. “It is done so that farmers do not suffer losses, especially for those that have planted paddy, while those that have not planted can begin cultivating their paddy fields,” he said.

The use of water pumps to ir-rigate Subak Belatung during this rainy season is claimed to be the first time. “The use of water pump cannot be done frequently because the operating cost is high,” he said.

During rainy season, he said the

drought does not only hit the Subak Belatung but also Subak Gubug 2 especially the Curah subgroup where farmers only planted at one hectare of land of the totally 26 hectares.

The Head of the Tabanan Agri-culture and Horticulture Agency, I Nyoman Budana, when contacted on Sunday (Jan. 17) justified that there is a water pump borrowed by Subak Belatung to cope with the drought. The agency provided the aids of water pump measuring 4 inches where the operation spends

1 liter of diesel per hour.He explained that the drought

occurred in Tabanan, especially in the southern region, is influenced by the prolonged dry season in 2015. This caused a lot of water not to get stored as groundwater but absorbed by soil so that the water reserves at the upstream area become a bit and cannot meet the needs of the overall irrigation especially in downstream areas. “The impact of drought in 2015 is perceived by East Selema-deg areas that cannot even plant paddy,” he said. BANGLI - The fund allocated by the government of Bangli to support the promotion of craft products of local craftsmen increases significantly this year. In previous year, the promotional budget was rationed as much as IDR 75 mil-lion. However, this year the district government rations IDR 200 million.

Such increase of budget was revealed by the Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, Nengah Sudibya, when met on Sunday (Jan. 17).

He said that with the increase in the fund, his agency wanted to boost the promotion of craft product of Bangli artisan so that it will be better known. It will be done by facilitating the artisans to participate in various exhibitions. Other than in Bali, his agency will also intensify promotions in other regions such as Yogyakarta and Jakarta. “Although the craft products of Bangli have been widely known, the promotion should be carried out so that we do not be abandoned by the market,” he said.

He also asked the artisans to persistently develop their design so that it will not be monotonous to attract the market. One of them is the sokasi plaited bamboo product. He asked the artisans to create and develop more attractive designs so that it can continue to exist in the market.

As known, so far the artisans in Bangli produce a variety of interesting craft products. Most of them are made from bamboo. This happens because bamboo raw materials are abundant in Bangli. Other than processed to make sokasi, the artisans of Bangli can also take advantage of bamboo roots into a high value craft. (kmb40)

BUSINESS

DAVOS, Switzerland — The world’s political and business elite are being urged to do more than pay lip service to growing inequalities around the world as they head off for this week’s World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos.

Two reports published Monday, from Oxfam and public relations firm Edelman, warned that the widening gap between the haves and have-nots since the global financial crisis is undermining a decades-long effort to reduce global poverty and fueling the rise of populist politicians.

According to Oxfam, the scale of the problem is increasingly stark: just 62 people, it says, own the same wealth as half the planet. The compares with 388 people just five years ago, when the global economy was just emerging from its deepest recession since World War II.

While the wealth of the poorest half of the world’s population — more than 3.6 billion people — has fallen by a tril-lion dollars, or 41 percent, since 2010, Oxfam said in its report that the wealth of the super-elite has risen by around half a trillion dollars.

Though acknowledging that dealing with inequalities has become a part of discussions in Davos, Oxfam said it’s time for leaders to do more than just acknowledge the problem, especially if they want to hit poverty-reduction targets.

“It is simply unacceptable that the poorest half of the world’s population owns no more than a few dozen super-rich people who could fit onto one bus,” said Winnie Byanyima, Oxfam Inter-national Executive Director, who will

again attend Davos, having co-chaired last year’s event.

Tax havens, she said, are at the core of the rigged system that allows big corporations and wealthy individuals to avoid paying their fair share of tax.

“I challenge the governments, com-panies and elites at Davos to play their part in ending the era of tax havens, which is fuelling economic inequality and preventing hundreds of millions of people lifting themselves out of pov-erty,” said Byanyima. “Multinational companies and wealthy elites are play-ing by different rules to everyone else, refusing to pay the taxes that society needs to function.”

Oxfam reckons around $7.6 trillion of individuals’ wealth sits offshore, around 12 percent of the total, and that around $190 billion could be made available for poverty-fighting initiatives if tax were paid on that wealth. Closing the loopholes, which Oxfam says are used by nine out of ten of the WEF’s sponsor-ing corporations, will help governments meet their goal of eliminating extreme poverty by 2030.

Over the past few years, those voic-ing concerns over growing inequalities have increased. Even the International Monetary Fund has warned of the perils to growth stemming from this gap.

According to Edelman, inequalities within society are already driving politi-cal change and that could put a break on economic potential.

In its annual survey of trust levels around the world, it found the largest-ever gap between the views of highly educated people and those with fewer years of schooling, driven by a disparity in income. (ap)

Up to half a million barrels per day of Iranian crude could be added to already saturated markets after US and European leaders ended a crippling embargo put in place over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The news led to further selling of the black gold, which has fallen by about three quarters since mid-2014 owing to the supply glut, record output levels, weak demand and a slowing global economy.

Brent for March delivery tum-bled to as low as $27.67, or by 4.4 percent from Friday’s close, before rebounding to trade at above $28. The last time Brent closed below $28 was in November 2003.

At around 0600 GMT, the con-tract was trading 49 cents, or 1.69 percent, lower at 28.44. US bench-mark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in February was down 41

cents, or 1.39 percent, at $29.01.“The drop was due to the West-

ern sanctions on Iran being lifted. This means we will be seeing a bigger oil glut with Iranian crude exports coming back to the mar-ket,” said Phillip Futures analyst Daniel Ang.

He said prices rebounded on some bargain-buying.

The United States and European

Union lifted the sanctions on Sun-day after the UN’s atomic watchdog confirmed that Iran had complied with its obligations under a land-mark deal in July to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Ric Spooner, chief market ana-lyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, said that while Iranian oil could come in quickly, suppliers still needed to find buyers. (afp)

PARIS - European aircraft maker Airbus has said it is teaming up with global ridesharing ser-vice Uber to test plans for offering an on-demand helicopter service.

Airbus’ new Silicon Valley-based innovation centre “is collaborating with terrestrial mobility provider Uber on a market pilot to provide an on-demand transportation service”, it said in a statement Sunday.

It would offer on-demand rides on Airbus’

H125 and H130 helicopters, it said, without giving an indication of their likely price.

Its goal would be “proving out a new business model for helicopter operators to access a broader customer base”, it added.

Uber has expanded to hundreds of cities around the world in at least 68 countries, allowing people to use smartphone applications to summon and pay for rides provided by drivers using their own cars. (afp)

SINGARAJA - Unique abilities and re-sistance to chili is owned by Putu Suartawan, 40, from Yadnya Kerti hamlet, Ularan, Seririt. A number of chilies smeared onto his body seem to have become his daily habit. He even feels no spicy and tender. He eats chili like a snack and even gets addicted as accustomed to eating super spicy chili without the addition of other foods.

Suartawan admitted that initially he never knew that he can take chili in large quanti-ties. He has done the habit of eating chili since the age of six. Once upon a time, he was taken to accompany his mother to go to his fields. He saw chili and was curious to taste it. “When I was a child, my mother took me to the field, and there grew chili plants. I ate the chilies one by one but did not taste spicy. I ate 10 seeds but they did not taste spicy,” he said, Sunday (Jan. 17).

His curiosity continues over time. After growing adult, he even tries to smear chili onto his body. It’s indeed miraculous. Suar-tawan even does not feel sore or spicy due to the chili. “At home, I try to eat chili because it does not taste spicy. After that, I smear the chili onto my body but do not feel anything. Then, it is dropped into the eyes and does not matter. I like best red chili because it tastes sweet. Well, green chili is even tasteless,” said Suartawan, having four children.

Lately he admitted to eat nearly three kilograms of chili. He did not get stomach ache, but was even satiate because his stomach is unable to hold the whole chili. He considered that chili has become a part of his life where in a day he always eats rice accompanied with 10 chilies. “I do not know how many kilos of chili I’ve eaten but my stomach is even satiate. Maximally I can eat three kilograms of chili. Apparently it will not be complete without eating chili each day. Many neighbors call me a chili human,” he said.

Due to such ability, he is dubbed as a chili human because of eating chili in large quan-tities. Besides, he recklessly smears it onto his body. Suartawan often gets an invitation from various circles, where he is asked to show off the attraction of eating chili. Many people are often frightened to see the action. “In the past, my action was watched by the governor and Jero Wacik at Renon. I was requested to have medical check-up first to hospital, and there was no health problem. My body is normal without any particular abnormality and the doctor even told me that I have an advantage,” he said.

Currently, he has not met a rival to eat chili. His attraction has just been carried out in Bali region. Due to curiosity, he is waiting for someone that can be taken to eat chili in large number. “So far, there is no party facilitating because I want to find a challenger for eating the largest amount of chili and can be pitted in Jakarta. I have no opportunity yet because there is no sponsor. I am ready to eat chili in any amount,” he said. (kmb34)

It was revealed by an artist, Wayan Widana, recently. He hoped more and more events are held in Karangasem by in-volving a variety of unique arts of Karan-gasem. There are many more undiscovered unique arts in Karangasem. When getting serious attention, he is confident they will support the arts and culture in the context of tourism promotion of Karangasem. It is a valuable capital that will not be found anywhere else in Bali. “If I may advise that overseas tourism promotion is not needed. Simply reduce it. It is enough to make empowerment first to all the typical arts of Karangasem. It should be taken seriously first, so that the arts and cultures displayed by Karangasem in various events will not be monotonous,” advised Widana.

He cited the art that has not been widely developed is the penting musical art. He

is also the leader of the Merdu Komala Penting art troupe of Karangasem. He assessed the typical traditional music of Karangasem begins to attract a lot of attention to other districts / municipality in Bali.

Similarly, the other arts also attract the enthusiasts. He wanted there is a program and system developing the arts seriously. As a result, the arts can develop and there is a clear regeneration. Comparable opin-ion was delivered by Ni Made Kinten, another artist.

According to her, all this time the at-tention and appreciation given to the arts and the artists are minimal. Kinten wanted that local government seriously preserves the arts in any form because they have become the identity of Bali, especially Karangasem. For instance, local govern-

ment can encourage the development of the art to village level. Such efforts should be pursued by local government with a real program and supported by adequate budget. Thus, when there is any art event, Karangasem has no problem to find the art troupe to represent Karangasem.

Suggestions of the artists were re-sponded by the Head of the Karangasem Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Purna. When contacted on Sunday (Jan. 17), Purna said that the campaign is cer-tainly very necessary, although the results are not enjoyed instantly. He said the over-seas promotion has been much reduced. For this year, the overseas promotion is only budgeted at IDR 150 million. More promotions are carried at home through coordination of provincial government. Related to local events, some activities have also been designed for this year.

According to him, building and pre-serving culture requires motivation from all parties massively. Karangasem is quite proud of the variety of cultural potential and it must be developed and preserved. He invited all the elements of society to work together to engage in various activi-ties. Local artists ask Tourism Office to reduce overseas promotion

AMLAPURA - The artists of Karangasem asked the district government to more seriously develop the art and culture in Karangasem. According to them, a lot of arts and cultures can still be developed to support local tourism. Local government, particularly the Culture and Tourism Agency, is better to reduce overseas promotion and more focus on developing the art and culture in the form of a variety of activities in the region. Thus, there are more spaces for the arts and culture to show the existence.

“The Philippines has ordered two Landing Platform Dock (LPD) warships of SSV type from Indone-sia. At the moment, the first ship has been launched, while the keel of the second vessel has been laid,” Presi-dent Director of PT PAL Indonesia M. Firmansyah noted.

The launch ceremony was at-tended by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli, Defense Minister Ryamizard Rya-cudu, some legislators, naval of-ficials, and representatives of the Philippine Defense Ministry.

The SSV-1 has been named Tarlac by the Philippine defense

minister.The SSV warship belonging to

the Lloyd Register class has been domestically built on the order of the Philippine defense ministry.

The warship is the first-ever to be exported by Indonesia and has received international recognition for the sophistication in its manufacturing process, according to Firmansyah.

Following the launch, PT PAL will do the finishing touches before delivering the SSV to the Philip-pines in May 2016.

The SSV is an upcoming class of LPD measuring a length of 123 meters, a width of 21.6 meters, and

a speed of 16 knots, with a sailing endurance of up to 30 days at sea.

It can carry two helicopters and landing craft utility vessel, some tanks, and military trucks.

The PKR-1 frigate was built for the Indonesian defense ministry. Its manufacturing was carried out in cooperation with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuild-ing (DSNS) through a transfer of technology.

The frigate will be handed over to the Indonesian defense ministry in January 2017.

The PKR-1 is 105.11 meters long, 14.2 meters wide, and has a speed of 28 knots. The frigate is able to sail for 20 days at a speed of 14 knots.

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) started questioning witnesses in alleged graft cases with lawmaker Damayanti Wisnu Putranti as the suspects.

Damayanti, a lawmaker from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)has been arrested on charge of receiving bribe from PT WTU to ensure that the company would be granted the contract for the projects of the public works and housing ministry in Maluku.

Two witnesses to be questioned on Monday are also suspects including Dessy A. Edwin and insurance agent of PT Allianz Insur-ance Life Julia Prasetyarini.

“Dessy and Julia would be questioned in the case with Dama-yanti Wisnu Putranti as the suspect,” KPK spokes person Yuyuk Andriati said.

In the process of investigations KPK already raided the working offices at the Parliament of Damayanti and two other lawmakers Budi Supriyanto, from the Golkar party and Yudi Widiana, from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). A parliament leader Fahri Hamzah, strongly protested the raid but KPK ignored the protest saying it had followed the proper procedure.

KPK suspected that Damayanri is not the lawmaker involved in the graft case.

Another team of KPK officers also raided the office of the di-rectorate general of highway construction and maintenance of the public works ministry.

KPK charged Damayanti, Julia Prasetyarini (UWI) and Dessy A Edwin (DES) with receiving US$33,000 each in bribe from PT WTU director Abdul Khoir.

The payments were part of US$404,000 as ‘fee” pledged by PT WTU to Damayanty.

If found guilty they could be sentenced up to 20 years in jail with a fine of Rp1 billion each.

In 2016, Maluku islands including Seram will have 19 packages of infrastructure projects including roads and bridges now in the process of tenders.

KPK is investigating where the remaining US$305,000 had been given by Abdul Kohir. (ant)

JAKARTA - Eight people were hurt and about 120 houses damaged when a 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook remote eastern Indonesia on Sunday, a government official said.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 46 kilometres (29 miles) at 8:22 am local time (2322 GMT Saturday) in the Banda Sea near the Maluku islands, according to the US Geological Survey.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said there was no tsunami, but that the quake caused the injuries and damage on a small nearby island. No deaths were reported.

“From the preliminary report we received, the impact of the quake was quite significant in two villages on Ambalau island,” said agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Quake-prone Indonesia sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide and cause frequent seismic and vol-canic activity.

A huge undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 trig-gered a tsunami that swamped parts of Indonesia’s Aceh province on Sumatra island.

The tsunami killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia and tens of thousands more in other countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. (afp)

PAL launches two warships

SURABAYA - The state-owned shipbuilding company PT PAL Indonesia has launched the domestically built Strategic Sealift Vessel (SSV)-1 and Guided-missile Destroyer Escort (PKR)-1 in a ceremony held at the PAL shipyard in Tanjung Perak on Monday.

The measures he proposed, however, are relatively modest, and he said they would not “put into question” the 35-hour workweek. With his country under a state of emergency since extremist attacks in November, Hollande did not seek to assume any new emergency pow-ers over the economy.

In an annual speech to business leaders, Hollande laid out plans for training half a million jobless workers, greater use of apprentice-

ships, and aid for companies that hire young workers.

Hollande’s Socialist government has struggled to boost long-stagnant French growth or reduce chronic unemployment, which has been around 10 percent for years. His chances of winning a potential second term may hinge on whether jobs pick up before next year’s presidential vote.

Hollande stressed the urgency of updating France’s labor-friendly

business model in an increasingly border-free, online economy. The measures included a loosening of France’s rigid working time rules, and a bonus of 2,000 euros to small businesses that hire young people.

He stressed the need to integrate youth from France’s troubled sub-urbs, including minorities who face job discrimination, into the global economy. High unemployment in France’s North African and African communities is seen as one of the factors driving some youths to vio-lent extremism or the drug trade.

Some measures will be included in draft economic reform laws the government is presenting to parlia-ment in the coming weeks. (ap)

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Over 100 taxis are blocking traffic in downtown Budapest, demanding a ban on Uber and other ride-hailing apps. The yellow vehicles from several taxi companies are block-ing most lanes of a key intersection in the Hungarian capital near St. Stephen’s Basilica, causing traffic delays.

later Monday to the office of Buda-pest’s mayor to present a petition with their demands.

Protest organizers said they want to show Mayor Istvan Tarlos “that the current condition is unsustain-able” and called for fines against Uber drivers and the immediate shutdown of the service. Uber says it has 1,200 drivers and 80,000 us-ers in Budapest. (ap)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Two Iranian poets who faced lashings and prison sentences for their work have escaped from Iran.

Poet Fatemeh Ekhtesari told The Associated Press on Monday that both she and fellow poet Mehdi Mousavi escaped from Iran in re-cent days and were safely in another country. She declined to elaborate out of concerns about their safety.

The two poets’ escape comes

as Ekhtesari faced an 11½-year prison sentence, while Mousavi faced nine years on charges ranging from propaganda against the state to “insulting sanctities,” as well as 99 lashings apiece.

While they are free, other Ira-nian artists, journalists and activ-ists remain either behind bars or face charges for their work in Iran, despite a recent nuclear deal with world powers and the release of four Iranian-American prisoners. (ap)

MANILA — Philippine officials say they received two intimidating radio warnings from people who identified themselves being from the Chinese navy when they flew a Cessna plane close to a Chinese-constructed island in the South China Sea.

Eric Apolonio said the incident happened Jan. 7 when he and other personnel of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines flew to a Philippine-occupied island for

an engineering survey ahead of the planned installation of aviation safety equipment on the island.

The island, which the Philip-pines calls Pag-asa, is close to Subi Reef, which has been transformed by China into an island in the dis-puted Spratly chain.

Apolonio said the voice mes-sage warned that the aircraft was “threatening the security of our station.” He said they continued their trip. (ap)

The result opened a 13-game gap between the top and second teams in the NBA’s Southwest Division, and meant the Spurs were now only 1-1/2 games behind Golden State for the Western Conference and over-all league lead.

Elsewhere, Russell Westbrook posted his second straight triple-double to lead Oklahoma City to a big win over Miami, while a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left gave Denver victory over Indiana in a high-scoring contest.

San Antonio’s LaMarcus Aldridge scored 23 points as the Spurs stretched their un-beaten at streak to 33 games dating back to last season. The 36-6 record after 42 games tied the franchise record set five seasons ago.

The Spurs won easily despite the loss of Tony Parker late in the third quarter to right hip soreness; the same injury that forced him to sit out two games at the start of the month. Wesley Matthews led Dallas with

just 12 points.Oklahoma City cruised to a 99-74 win

over Miami, with Westbrook finishing with 13 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds. It was his fifth triple-double of the season and the 24th of his career.

Kevin Durant had 24 points and 10 re-bounds for the Thunder, which set a season best for least points allowed. It was also the least points scored by the Heat this season. Dwyane Wade, who missed the previous game due to shoulder soreness, led the Heat with 22 points on his 34th birthday.

Denver’s Randy Foye hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to cap a come-from-behind 129-126 victory over Indiana.

The Nuggets came back in the second half to get their seventh straight win at home over the Pacers. Danilo Gallinari had 23 points. Myles Turner scored a career-high 25 points for Indiana.

Houston pulled away in the second half to win 112-95 at the Los Angeles Lakers, led by 31 points from James Harden.

Minnesota emphatically ended a run of nine straight losses and posted its first win of 2016 by beating Phoenix 117-87. (ap)

MELBOURNE - Defending champion Serena Williams dis-pelled any doubts about her fit-ness and form after a four-month break from the game with a tense 6-4 7-5 win over feisty Italian Camila Giorgi to reach the second round of the Australian Open on Monday.

The world number one had bare-ly swung a racquet in anger since her U.S. Open exit last September and entered a sweltering Rod Laver Arena to face the highest-ranked unseeded player in the draw amid speculation about the condition of her left knee.

Williams pulled out of her first match at the Hopman Cup in Perth earlier this month due to knee inflammation but the 34-year-old moved freely during a testing opener against Giorgi and said it gave her no problems.

“(The knee is) great. It was an hour and 43 minutes and I didn’t feel it at all,” Williams told report-

ers.“I think I served well today. I

think ... I got broken once, but other than that I was able to stay focused on that part.”

Showing none of the lethargy that has sometimes dogged her in early grand slam matches, a calm and focused Williams roared to a 4-1 lead as the temperature soared over 32 degrees Celsius (90 Fahr-enheit).

But 36th-ranked Giorgi, a slight-ly built player packing a meaty forehand, steadied herself to drag Williams into a baseline battle and the American’s screams of frustra-tion underlined the growing tension as the match progressed.

Though a match for Williams in terms of court speed and fire-power, Giorgi landed barely a third of her first serves and gave up the decisive break at 5-5 in the second set with her 12th double-fault.

Williams needed no further invi-tation and closed out the match with

a customary barrage of booming first serves.

A shock semi-final upset at Flushing Meadows by unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci ended Wil-liams’ bids for both a 22nd major title and a rare calendar grand slam.

The loss plunged the American into a period of introspection but the win over Giorgi showed she has lost none of her competitive fire.

Williams, who next faces 90th-ranked Taiwanese Hsieh Su-Wei, said the break from the game helped her a lot.

“I have been going non-stop since the London Olympics, and seeing that this is another Olympic year, I kind of wanted to start the year out really fresh and really go at it again as hard as I can,” she added.

“I just needed that time to just recover the best of my ability and get really fit ... and really train and get ready for the season.” (rtr)

SEMARAPURA - A great nation is the one that can appreciate the merits of its great heroes. It is a string of words becoming the motivation of the government of Klungkung in building the monument of Puputan Klungkung. This monument is meant to commemorate and appreciate the merits of the heroes who have died and been willing to sacrifice their body and soul in maintaining the dignity of the homeland occupied by colonialist.

Exactly located downtown of Semarapura, the towering monument of 28 meters high and in a phallus and yoni-shaped gives a sacred im-pression. The entire building is made from black stone so that it is in tune with the meaning of Hindu philosophy of Puputan or all-out war conducted by the best natives to Klungkung kingdom with their subjects. Located in the heart of Semarapura town, it is very easy to find it either from the Denpasar-Besakih route or from Candidasa. It is also within walking distance from the Kertha Gosa, shopping center, traditional market and government offices.

Puputan Klungkung Monument is a memorial of a historical event oc-curred on Tuesday Umanis, April 28, 1908, where in the monument area has occurred an all-out war indicating a bitter struggle against the efforts of the Dutch colonists to still occupy the motherland of Indonesia.

The peace-loving people of Klungkung respect and uphold the nobil-ity and purity of blood spilled under the leadership of a king that ruled at the time and followed the loyal knights that have been killed due to the attack of bullets of the Dutch. As a small part of Indonesia, Klung-kung region was able to respect and uphold the heroism and patriotism through all out war.

Klungkung Monument in the form of lingam and yoni established on the area of 123 square meters is equipped with four gazebos at the corners of the courtyard, while at the bottom of the phallus lies a very large room in the form of square building with four entrance gates located on the four sides, namely from the east, south, west and north. Height of the monument from the pedestal to the top of the phallus reaches 28 meters.

In the building / room downstairs with the phallus there is a kind of octagonal dome building on 19 pieces of lotus flowers. This wholly reflects the date of April 28, 1908. As part of the education on history, the monument room is also equipped with a diorama depicting the struggle of the people of Klungkung with the king. And as an expression of respect for the Puputan Klungkung, the commemoration is carried out every year.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring their first goal

98 Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Tuesday, January 19, 2016

Sp rt

T h e win moved United within sight of leaders Arsenal, who are level on 44 points with surprise package Leicester City after sharing the points in a 0-0 draw at Stoke City. Asked if United were still in the title race, the Dutchman told a news conference: “It is seven points and seven points we can over-come that.

“This game shall give a big boost to the players, to the fans, to everybody in the environ-ment of Manchester United and we have to continue of course.

“That’s not so easy, and we have seen that also today, but we can do it because we show every week that we can do it.” “To beat Liverpool is always impor-tant,” he added. “Today it was important because our competitors lost points and when the gap is like this we can overturn that.”

Van Gaal has many critics among United fans but has given them at least four reasons to smile since taking over at Old Traf-ford -- four wins in four league games against Liverpool.

Sunday’s victory in the north-west derby at Anfield, thanks to Wayne Rooney’s 78th-minute volley, complet-ed a second successive

league double over Liverpool for Van Gaal following United’s 3-1 win

at Old Trafford

i n S e p -tember.

Last season United beat Liverpool 3-0 at home and 2-1 away and he was delighted after Sunday’s vic-tory in a drab game lifted United back up to fifth in the table. “In the second half we played much better and kept the ball better and created chances and Wayne Rooney makes the fantastic goal again,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.

Rooney’s strike, an athletic hooked volley after Marouane Fel-laini’s header bounced back off the crossbar, was the one moment of true class in a game of few scoring chances.

Liverpool were slightly more threatening, but only really tested United keeper David De Gea with two dangerous efforts from Roberto Firmino and Emre Can in the second half.

“I don’t think David De Gea has done very much, two or three balls he has to stop, a goalkeeper has to do that. He is playing very good but you can not say he was a fantastic, marvellous goalkeeper today,” Van Gaal continued. He was also de-lighted with Rooney’s winner.

“I asked him to score here and he makes a lot of goals now in a row. I think he is a fantastic Manchester United striker for the media but he was also that in the first half of the season.”

Rooney has now scored in four successive games and took his league tally for United to 176 -- the record by one player for one club in the Premier League era, passing Thierry Henry’s previous mark of 175 for Arsenal. (rtr)

MILAN — Juventus beat 10-man Udinese 4-0 to move back into second spot in Serie A on Sunday, while Lu-ciano Spalletti’s second spell in charge of Roma began with a 1-1 draw against bottom side Hellas Verona.

Paulo Dybala scored twice, in-cluding a 25th-minute penalty after Udinese defender Danilo was sent off for bringing down Mario Mandzukic. Dybala also provided two assists for Sami Khedira and Alex Sandro as Ju-ventus dominated the first half.

With its 10th consecutive league win, Juventus moved two points be-hind Napoli after the Serie A leader’s 3-1 win over Sassuolo on Saturday. Inter Milan, which drew at Atalanta on Saturday, was two points further back.

“There are still 18 games to go, we need to get a lot more wins to get to the right amount for the title,” Juven-tus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “Napoli is on an extraordinary run, it is the favorite at the moment, but the top five in the table all have the chance to win it.”

Fiorentina remained fourth, slip-ping six points behind Napoli after a surprise 2-0 loss at AC Milan, which moved up to sixth. Roma was fifth, nine points below top spot.

“We didn’t do very well, even if we tried to and created chances which we then didn’t make the most of,” Spalletti said. “It’s a difficult result to accept, but there are things to take from it, like the great work rate and the disappointment of the team when they came back into the dressing room. We have to work.”

Elsewhere, Lazio fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Bologna after home defender Adam Masina was sent off, while relegation-threatened Carpi beat Sampdoria 2-1 for a second successive win.

Chievo Verona drew 1-1 against Empoli and Genoa beat 10-man Pal-

ermo 4-0 in the lunchtime kickoff.Udinese had beaten Juven-

tus on the opening d a y a n d

w a s l o o k i n g for a similar result to celebrate the inaugura-tion of the Nuovo Stadio Friuli, where all 25,000 seats were sold out. However, Juventus took the lead in the 15th minute when Dybala curled a free kick over the wall and matters grew worse three minutes later.

Udinese failed to clear a corner and Dybala nodded the ball across the six-yard box for an unmarked Khedira to head home.

Any hope Udinese had of rescuing something from the match evaporated in the 25th. Stephan Lichtsteiner sent Mandzukic clear and he was brought down by Danilo, who was duly sent off. Dybala converted for his 11th goal of the season.

Alex Sandro netted his first in Serie A three minutes from halftime, firing into the far corner from the edge of the area to complete the embarrass-ing rout.

Spalletti, who first coached Roma from 2005-09, returned to the club this week after Rudi Garcia was sacked following just one win in its last 10 matches in all competitions. But Roma’s struggles continued against Verona, which hasn’t won a match all season.

Radja Nainggolan broke the dead-lock four minutes from halftime with his first league goal of the season after a brilliant backheeled assist from Dan-iele de Rossi.

The goal came moments after Edin Dzeko had hit the post, prompting hope of a better second half for the hosts. Both sides hit the woodwork after the break before Verona levelled just after the hour when Leandro Castan brought down Pawel Wszolek and Giampaolo Pazzini fired the resulting penalty in off the underside of the crossbar. Dzeko should have won it for Roma in stoppages but headed over the bar from close range.

Milan got off to the perfect start in the evening match when Giacomo Bo-naventura released Carlos Bacca, who raced forward, cut inside the penalty area and fired into the far corner to give his side a fourth-minute lead.

Mario Balotelli made his comeback from injury three minutes from time, with his first appearance since Septem-ber 27, but it was another substitute who found the back of the net.

Kevin-Prince Boateng ran onto Ju-raj Kucka’s long ball, rounded Fioren-tina goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu and slotted into an empty net for his first goal of his second spell at Milan. (ap)

BARCELONA, Spain — Real Madrid’s second straight five-goal performance under new coach Zinedine Zidane came at the high price of losing Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema to injury on Sunday, while Luis Suarez scored a hat trick to lead Barcelona’s 6-0 demolition of 10-man Athletic Bilbao.

As the two powerhouses got goals from their trios of star strikers, Atletico Madrid quietly churned out a 3-0 win at Las Pal-mas to retain its provisional lead of the Spanish league. Madrid crushed Sporting Gijon 5-1 after Bale opened the scoring, followed by braces from Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema.

Lionel Messi presented his re-cord fifth Ballon d’Or award to his fans before kickoff at Camp Nou. He then converted a penalty to put Barcelona on its way before being substituted at halftime because of what coach Luis Enrique called “slight pain” without giving further details.

Suarez took his league-leading tally to 18 goals while Neymar and Ivan Rakitic also scored against a Bilbao side that had goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz sent off in the fourth minute. Atletico stayed two points clear of Barcelona, which has a game to play. Madrid remained four points back in third.

The injuries to Bale and Ben-zema put a damper on another dominant showing by Zi-dane’s team, which followed

its 5-0 win against Deportivo La Coruna on his debut with a first-half blitz that starkly contrasted with Madrid’s scoreless draw at Sporting under predecessor Rafa Benitez to start the season.

“It’s a fantastic start. It’s not

easy to score five goals,” said Zidane. “I know what we are capable of and what we are going to do in the future. This is only the beginning. I expect a lot more from this team.”

Ronaldo said that the team has immediately clicked with Zidane in a way it never did under Benitez.

“The players are more moti-vated with Zizou,” Ronaldo said. “(He) has given the team a boost. Seriously, there are some coaches that you have more empathy with than others. I never had a bad opin-ion of Rafa, (but) he sees football in a different way than Zizou. (Zidane) is relaxed, he is friendly with the players.”

Injury concerns aside, Madrid’s talented squad made a strong state-ment that the club may not skip a beat when FIFA’s one-year transfer ban for breaching rules regarding youth players takes effect after the close of the winter market.

Bale picked up from his three-goal outing in Zidane’s first match in charge with another strong showing, helping to earn a corner kick that he then headed home from Toni Kroos’ cross.

Benzema set up Ronaldo to double the lead, and Bale crossed for Benzema to use an acrobatic kick to score Madrid’s third. Ma-drid hadn’t scored three goals in the opening 12 minutes of a league match since 1956.

With Sporting reeling, Ronaldo tapped in Dani Carvajal’s cross to make it 4-0 by the 18th min-ute. Benzema got his brace from Francisco “Isco” Alarcon’s pass in the 41st.

Madrid lost Bale a minute before halftime with a right-calf injury, and Benzema went down

early in the second half, shortly af-ter Sporting’s Isma Lopez scored, when teammate James Rodriguez kicked his right leg.

Later Sunday, Barcelona was up a goal and a man after seven min-utes when Iraizoz saw a straight red card for bringing down Suarez, allowing Messi to fire the spot kick past substitute Iago Herrerin. Bilbao was at Barcelona’s mercy the rest of the way.

Suarez set up Neymar on the break in the 31st before he worked a sublime one-two combination with the Brazil striker to score in the 47th.

Neymar dribbled through the defense to provide an assist for Rakitic before Suarez steered in Arda Turan’s pass in the 68th and then headed home Sergio Bus-quets’s cross with eight minutes to play.

In the Canary Islands, Diego Simeone’s Atletico applied the same formula that has the 2014 champions at the front of the title hunt.

Goalkeeper Jan Oblak kept a fourth straight clean sheet - he has only conceded three goals in eight away games this season - while Antoine Griezmann scored a second-half double from two assists by Jorge “Koke” Resurrec-cion after Filipe Luis put Atletico ahead.

“I understand the anxiety one can have about the expectations surrounding the team,” Simeone said. “But we won’t change our mentality of focusing on the next game.” Elsewhere, Valencia coach Gary Neville remained winless in six league games since taking over after a 2-2 draw with Rayo Valle-cano, while Getafe beat Espanyol 3-1. (ap)

LISBON - Porto slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat at Vitoria Guimaraes on Sunday, leaving them five points off the pace in the Portuguese league, after an early blunder by former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Bouba Sare took advantage of Casillas’ misfortune in the bizarre fourth-minute incident to hand Porto their first defeat since they fired coach Julen Lopetegui 10 days ago.

An attempted clearance by the Porto defence went only as far as Cafu whose 20-metre volley hit team mate Ricardo Valente on the head in the penalty area and the ball looped towards the top corner.

Casillas had plenty of time to adjust his position and seemed to have the ball covered but instead of tipping it over the bar he tried to catch it, dropped the ball at the feet of Bouba Sare and the Ivorian turned and scored.

The Spanish goalkeeper raised his hand to the Porto fans as a gesture of apology when he returned for the second half.

Porto, who had won their first two games under interim coach Rui Barros, had forward Vincent Aboubakar sent off in the last minute for a second bookable offence.

Porto are third with 40 points from 18 games, five behind leaders Sporting Lisbon who were held 2-2 at home by Ton-dela on Friday. Title holders Benfica, 2-1 winners at Estoril on Saturday, are second with 43.

Braga defender Willy Boly was booked, scored, conceded a penalty and sent off in a dramatic 10-minute spell during their 3-2 win at Nacional

The French defender turned the ball in from close range to give Braga a 20th-minute lead, shortly after being booked.

Five minutes later, he felled a Nacional player in the area and was dismissed before Willyan levelled for the hosts with the resulting penalty.

The hosts had Zainadine Junior sent off just before the hour and Braga went on to win with goals by Pedro Santos and Nikola Stojiljkovic, while Salvador Agra replied for the Madeira side. (rtr)

SCOttISh Premiership leaders Celtic have signed Denmark defender Erik Svi-atchenko from Danish cham-pions FC Midtjylland, the Glasgow club said on Sunday. Sviatchenko, who has four caps and scored against France in a friendly last October, has signed a 4-1/2 year deal, Celtic said on their website (www.celticfc.net).

“It means so much to me to join a winning club, to join a club that goes for and wins trophies and wants to play in the Cham-

pions League,” Sviatchenko, 24, said.

“I have had a taste of win-ning with Midtjylland and I want more of this feeling at Celtic. When you play foot-ball, you want to be remem-bered for winning and I want to be remembered as a winner with Celtic.”

Celtic have been Scottish champions for the past four sea-sons and top the standings on 49 points from 21 matches, three points ahead of Ab-erdeen. (rtr)

(rtr)

The warship is equipped with battle equipment such as torpedoes and missiles. (ant)

Taxi drivers said they would go

later Monday to the office of Buda-pest’s mayor to present a petition with their demands.

(ap)

(afp)

Brent oil falls below $28 after Iran sanctions lifted

SINGAPORE - Brent crude fell below $28 a barrel in Asia on Monday for the first time in more than 12 years on fears about a worsening supply glut after Western sanctions on Iran were lifted, allowing Tehran to resume oil exports.

(kmb40)

“As planned, the ticket can be

exchanged for food.

(kmb45)

(ap)

“The body of a Canadian national Amer Quali Taher has been handed over to his family member,” Indonesian Police spokes-person Senior Commissioner Suharsono stated on Monday.

Taher, a 70-year-old resident of Laval, Quebec, was shot dead by an attacker outside a Starbucks coffee shop where the stand-off took place in Jakarta.

Other civilian casualties include an Indo-nesian national Rais Karna, whose body has been claimed his family and buried.

“The body of the other victim, Rais, has also been taken and buried by his family,” Suharsono noted.

Moreover, Suharsono also remarked that four bodies of the suspected Jakarta attack-ers are still at the Police’s Said Sukanto Hospital in East Jakarta.

The suspected attackers have been iden-tified as 26-year-old Dian Joni Kurniadi, Afif alias Sunakin, 40-year-old Muham-mad Ali who were shot dead by the police, and Ahmad Muhazin who was the suicide bomber.

At least six bombs were detonated outside a shopping plaza in Central Jakarta’s busi-ness district during the attack that started at 10:40 a.m. local time, and exchange of fire was reported shortly.

All security personnel present near the location rushed to the crime scene and took control of the situation within three to four hours.

The Jakarta Regional Police spokesman Mohammad Iqbal pointed out that the use of home-assembled arms by the terrorists during the Jakarta attack could only be con-firmed after an on-site investigation. (ant)

THE FORUM of Ba-linese People Rejecting Reclamation (ForBALI) held a public discussion entitled “Revealing the Myths of Disaster Mitiga-

tion in Benoa Bay Reclama-tion” at Penggak Men Mersi,

on Friday (Jan. 15). During the discussion, the flawed reasoning behind the claim that the Benoa Bay reclamation plan would serve to mitigate natural disasters -often cited by the projects investor, was brought to light.

The reclamation plan’s investor has said that floods could be prevented by reclaim-ing Benoa Bay and that the project could serve as a evacuation site, in the case of a tsunami. Discussion speaker I Made Kris Adi Astra however expressed his confusion regarding claims that the Benoa Bay recla-mation plan would in any way contribute to disaster mitigation.

Based on his research using the seismic vulnerability index, the reclamation plan would in fact make the whole area more vulnerable to the negative impacts of earthquakes. “On a natural island in the area, earthquake tremors would be ampli-fied 3.5 times, but on a reclaimed island, the tremors would be amplified 4.9 times. According to the seismic vulnerability index, earthquakes that occur on reclaimed islands score more than twice as high as earthquakes that occur on natural islands in terms of the danger that they pose. Earth-quakes on natural islands are indexed at 4, whereas on reclaimed islands they are indexed at 9.1,” he said.

Kris explained that reclaimed islands are made from landfill that is nowhere nearly as tightly packed as the substances that make up natural islands. Even after a thousand years -let alone 50, man made islands are still extremely young and not as dense as natural islands that can take any-where from 2.5 to 5 million years to form. “We cannot compare the two,” he said.
