NEW YORK — James Franco is adding another notch to his expansive re-sume — stage director. Rattlestick Playwrights Theater said Monday that Franco will direct Robert Boswell’s world premiere play “The Long Shrift” from July 7-Aug. 23. The off-Broadway job will co-incide with Franco’s cur-rent one on Broadway as an actor in “Of Mice and Men.”

Franco has seemingly

been dipping his toe into every element of show business, from acting in TV and films like “Pine-apple Express” and “Spi-der-Man” to screenwriting and producing, or writing a novel and being an artist.

He made his Broad-way debut this spring with Chris O’Dowd playing two tragic migrant workers trying to make their way through the aftermath of drought and the Depres-sion in 1930s America. The play ends its run on July 27.

Madonna attended a preview of “Holler If Ya Hear Me” in New York City on Monday, which would have been the rapper’s 43rd birthday. Shakur died in 1996 at age 25.

The musical officially opens Thursday at the Palace Theatre. It uses Shakur’s songs to tell an original story about two young men deal-ing with life and tragedy in a Midwest-ern industrial city. Recent Tony winner Kenny Leon is directing.

Madonna sat in the third row. Shakur’s

mother and show producer, Afeni Shakur, also attended.

“Holler If Ya Hear Me” uses some of the rap genius’ well-known songs, including “Califor-nia Love,” ‘’Dear Mama,” ‘’I Get Around” and “Keep Ya Head Up.”

Associated PressNEW YORK — Steven Spielberg’s next two films have

been slated for October 2015 and July 2016. DreamWorks announced Monday that an untitled Cold War spy thriller from Spielberg will open Oct. 16 of next year, and “The BFG” is planned for July 1, 2016.

The Cold War thriller is to star Tom Hanks as James Dono-van, an attorney negotiating the return of an American pilot from the Soviet Union in 1960. “The BFG” is a live-action adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s book.

The 67-year-old Spielberg is juggling numerous produc-ing jobs in television and film. His last directed movie was 2012’s Oscar-winning “Lincoln.”

The Acting Regent of Klung-kung, Made Kasta, when con-tacted on Monday (Jun 16), confirmed that Nusa Penida subdistrict could not get out of the food crisis issues. Kasta said that since three years ago the local government had built a rice granary in four villages considered the most difficult to meet their daily food needs. The four villages included the Batumadeg, Batukandik, Seka-rtaji and Bunga Mekar. It was caused by geographical condi-tions of the region spreading on hill ranges and could only cultivate tubers and other crops during rainy season. Meanwhile, other villages located on the coast could still survive with a variety of other food sources. Moreover, the coastal region had been classified into urban area on the island.

Kasta admitted the people on the upper areas were always difficult to meet their food needs every dry season. The existence of rice granary could not always help the local community. After knowing the four villages faced food crisis again this year, his party planned to hand over food

aid again to them. “Now, it is the third year and will be the last,” he said. As planned, the local government would deliver 8.4 tons of rice aid through the Food Security Office. Each vil-lage would receive 2 tons of rice to temporarily overcome the people’s food difficulties. After this submission, the deputy regent affirmed to conduct an evaluation whether the aid was effective or not to help the resi-dents of Nusa Penida go out of the food crisis. Moreover, the program had been running for three years.

“After the third year, we will evaluate whether the presence of rice granary and the aid disbursed each year are beneficial or not be-cause they face the same problem each year. It must be considered to find out other alternatives,” said Kasta.

According to the Head of the Food Security Office, Wayan Kereng, all this time the rice granary of food aid was effec-tive to help people. However, his party also suggested finding out other efforts, so that people would be able to feed themselves independently. “Now, this is the

the second one, it was a head. I run away immediately,” he added.

The first one wrapped a part of hip and the second was head. The identity of the victim is still unclear because there is no report of missing person in the area. The police directly went to the crime scene and carried out investiga-tion.

The Head of Klungkung Police AKBP Ni Wayan Sri Yudatni Wira-wati said that there are no other body parts found in the area. The head and hip then sent to forensic lab into be examined thoroughly. She could not give further informa-tion because still waiting for the result from the lab.

One of the locals in the area,

Nyoman Widya, said that he heard dogs barking loudly at midnight in the location of the body parts were found. There is a possibility that the body parts were thrown by someone who driving from Karangasem to Klungkung.

“My house is very near from the location and it is not usual that dog bark like that,” he added.

The police also found chest and bones in Pesaban Village, Rendang District, Karangasem. The police suspected that the murder hap-pened in Karangasem Regency and the body parts were thrown away one by one along the way.

Four villages in Nusa Penida face food crisisBali Post

SEMArAPUrA - Each year, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, remains difficult to meet its food needs. The region becoming the pocket of poverty faces food crisis again this midyear. Of the 16 villages, four villages are now struggling to meet their food needs due to prolonged drought.

last we provide the aid. In the fourth year, it must be thought to look for other alternatives,” he said. Kereng asserted that an area would have a good food security when it could feed itself.

As consequence, it needed to be rethought about other kinds of crops that could be developed and esti-mated to be appropriately cultivated

at the local region to meet the food needs of the local area. Apart from planting corn, cassava or the like, it was required a scientific study to determine other kinds of crops that could provide food security and economic benefits.

To note, based on the data of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Klungkung, 64 percent of Klung-

kung region lies in Nusa Penida. Meanwhile, 12 percent of Klung-kung area consists of rice field. Unfortunately, of the rice field acre-age, none is located in Nusa Penida whereas the number of population in this subdistrict is quite high reaching 48,560 people of the total Klungkung population amounting to 186,488 people. The 36th Bali Art Festival

A legislator of Gianyar House, Ketut Karda, recently said that his party did not want the development of budget hotels in Ubud. If Ubud was stuffed with budget hotels or city hotels, Ubud was feared to lose its hallmark that promoted rural tourism. “If they are allowed to grow, then what is the difference of Ubud from other tourist areas such as Badung and Denpasar?” he criticized.

Even, the more alarming was that if the budget hotels brought in unfair business competition. Tariff war would occur between budget hotels and home stays, bungalows, cottages or villas owned by local community. Budget hotels offered the same room rates as those offered by community-owned accommodation. Moreover, city hotels or budget hotels often undercut their prices. Karda worried the city hotels would take the market share that currently had been worked on by local communities. “If the market share is taken, local communities will dither. In the long run, they will go bankrupt,” he said.

From his observations, there were two budget hotels starting to grow in Ubud, one of which operated in the area of Padang Tegal. According to him, the government should no longer give permission for the construction of budget hotels. In addition to making the Ubud tourism cheaper, such accommodation was also feared to make Ubud area more crowded.

“If the government cannot avoid the investments for the sake of increasing revenue, zonation should be used. To my knowledge, Ubud has no longer expects such investment. It will be better to direct the investment to other areas such as to coastal areas,” said Karda.

Similar opinion was also revealed by the environmental-

Ubud area has become one of the main tourist destinations in Bali. Ubud has long been known as an area having a rich culture and natural beauty. Not surprisingly, many investors look to invest in Ubud, where one of them is to develop a budget hotel or city hotel.

The announcement contained an image of what appeared to be the edge of a smartphone -- a device long rumored to be in the works by the Seattle, Washing-ton firm, which is a retailer of a multitude of goods and digital content. “If it is a smartphone, Amazon would automatically be considered one of the top play-ers before it even ships its first phone,” said Gerry Purdy, chief mobile analyst for Compass In-telligence.

LOS ANGELES — When AwesomenessTV launched as a YouTube channel two years ago, it was a bet by veteran TV and movie producer Brian Robbins on the ability of teen and tween audiences to find videos they

Amazon could shake up sector with smartphoneAgence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - Amazon’s mystery unveiling Wednesday is widely expected to be a smart-phone, which if managed well could shake up the market and boost the US online giant as a device maker. The company has given few hints, inviting a small group of media to the event to be hosted by Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos.

clout, large customer base and willingness to sell devices at low profit margins gives the company an opportunity to get a foothold in this key segment.

“They have a lot of tools,” Purdy told AFP. “They can give free access to content, access to music, or they could credit your monthly phone bill if you spend enough with Amazon.”

Amazon has worked to keep customers close with its Amazon Prime subscription service, for $99 a year. This gives consumers

free delivery for goods, as well as access to Amazon’s streaming video service. Last week, the company added streaming music for no additional charge.

But Amazon still needs to deliver a high-quality handset and offer enough apps to com-pete with the popular devices from Apple and makers such as Samsung which use the Google Android platform.

Hints from BezosSeveral reports have said Ama-

zon’s new phone would have 3D technology, making for a richer, multidimensional display that could differentiate it from rivals. In a cryptic message to journalists attending the event, Bezos sent copies of his favorite childhood book, “Mr. Pine’s Purple House,” which is about one house that stands out from the others.

Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey said Amazon is not interested in taking away a lot of Apple and Samsung market share, but in keeping its custom-ers more engaged. “Amazon wants to be in your pocket,” he told AFP. “It wants to be with you in your hand’s reach whenever you think about something you want to purchase.”

McQuivey sees Amazon fol-lowing a course similar to what it

has done with the Kindle tablets -- selling at low prices to drive the purchase of more Amazon content, including books, elec-tronics and streamed films or music. “The Kindle Fire tablet has never gotten significant market share, but for the people who own them, it made them more connected to Amazon,” McQuivey said.

Still, some analysts say Ama-zon is taking a risk in a new, fiercely competitive, segment of the market.

“It’s going to be an uphill climb,” said Ramon Llamas, a mobile analyst for IDC.

Llamas said a majority of US customers, and many in other parts of the world, already have a smartphone or have considered an iPhone or Android handset.

love to watch online. On Monday, Robbins kicks off DreamWorks TV, another YouTube channel that represents one of the first attempts by Hollywood to mesh the polished look of movies with the chaos of content on the Internet.

The channel is aimed at 6 to

11 year olds and will have a mix of videos featuring characters familiar to DreamWorks Anima-tion audiences — like “Shrek” and Po from “Kung Fu Panda” — alongside those who haven’t yet made it big — like cardboard cut-out news anchors from “The Report Card.”

The hope is that kids who come to watch their favorite char-acters will get interested in new ones that might one day become just as valuable.

Robbins compared his channel to cable TV networks such as MTV and ESPN in the 1970s and ‘80s. What were once fledgling networks that no one watched have now become multibillion-dollar enterprises that are the bedrocks of major media com-panies.

“This is really about building the cable channel of tomorrow,” Robbins said in an interview. “What we think is happening digitally is that the next genera-tion of those brands will be born out of this digital revolution that’s going on.”

AwesomenessTV was one of the startup channels that received a small piece of the $100 million in seed funding that YouTube doled out to some 100 creators two years ago to develop origi-nal content for the online video platform.

Today, it is one of the few to have amassed an audience large enough to attract the attention of a major studio. DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. bought AwesomenessTV in May 2013 for what could exceed $100 million if the channel operator continues to hit its earnings targets. This

March, The Walt Disney Co. said it would pay up to $950 million for rival YouTube channel opera-tor Maker Studios, a price that makes the AwesomenessTV deal seem like a bargain.

The online platform will be a relatively inexpensive way to de-velop hits and to forget failures.

Birk Rawlings, head of anima-tion at DreamWorks TV, said the network will debut more than a dozen new shows in the first few weeks, including “Jimmy Blue Shorts” and “Fifi Cat Therapist.” One live-action show will re-imagine the comic book character “Richie Rich,” one of the hun-dreds of characters DreamWorks acquired when it bought Classic Media in June 2012.

Executives will tweak the lineup based on audience feed-back in the form of “likes,” repeat viewings and the amount of time people stick around.

The venture represents a great way for DreamWorks to try out new content and keep audiences engaged with their biggest fran-chises, said Peter Csathy, chief executive of Manatt Digital Me-dia Ventures, an investor in You-Tube channel network DanceOn. He said it’s fine if some quickly made programming doesn’t live up to the luscious imagery and vibrant animation of the Dream-Works brand.

City hotel judged inappropriate, worried to disrupt business

Bali Post

GIANYAR - Ubud area has become one of the main tourist destinations in Bali. Ubud has long been known as an area having a rich culture and natural beauty. Not surprisingly, many investors look to invest in Ubud, where one of them is to develop a budget hotel or city hotel. However, many circles judge that it is not feasible to develop budget hotel in Ubud. It is based on consideration that low cost hotel is potentially lethal to small-scale tourist accommo-dation businesses owned by local communities.

ist from Ubud, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana. Despite offering relatively low room rates, the city hotel or budget hotels are professionally managed. Managerially, they were much better than the community-owned enterprises.

According to him, if the government seriously wanted to boost revenue from tourism sector, it was better to empower local communities. He asked the government to give coaching to small or medium-scale businesses

owned by local communities so they could be managed more professionally.

“In Ubud, the local community relies on their livelihood from tourism sector. If there is a city hotel, it will kindle people to scramble. After a long time, the people’s home currently operated into a guest house or home stay will become a boarding house again. Such condition happened after the first Bali bombing,” he said. (kmb25)

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi is scheduled to have talks with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on Wednesday. He also is to meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and General Secretary of the Communist Party Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Yang’s visit is the highest-level meeting between the two governments since the rig was deployed May 1, sparking anti-China riots in Vietnam that killed five Chinese nationals and injured hundreds more. Yang and Minh will discuss the oil rig when they meet at an annual bilateral event Yang is attending, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh told reporters Monday.

“As we have affirmed many times, Vietnam has always been patient to look for dialogue with China to peace-fully resolve the tension in the East Sea,” Binh said, referring to the South China Sea. “This meeting, therefore, will surely be a channel and an event where the two sides can discuss the issue to find solutions to the current tension.”

Minh and Yang spoke by phone in early May. Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry said at the time that Minh denounced China’s placement of the oil rig, saying it seriously violated Vietnam’s sovereignty, and demanded that China immediately withdraw the rig and its escorting vessels. China’s official Xinhua News Agency, how-ever, quoted Yang as telling Minh that Vietnam should stop harassing China’s normal drilling operations.

China has said its ships have been rammed more than 1,500 times by Vietnamese vessels since the dispute began. On Monday, Col. Ngo Ngoc Thu, deputy commander of Vietnam’s coast guard, dismissed the allegations, saying that 36 Vietnamese vessels have been rammed, and that 15 Viet-namese fisheries patrol staff and two fishermen have been injured.

Thu also disputed Chinese accusa-tions that Vietnamese divers left ob-stacles in the water to disrupt drilling operations. He said Vietnam did not use divers near the rig but that fisher-men were forced to leave behind nets and other equipment because Chinese ships used water cannons to force the fishing boats to retreat.

LAKE ISABELLA, California — Resi-dents were told they could return to some 1,000 mountain homes on the southern end of California’s Sierra Nevada range as firefighters stunted the growth of a smoky wildfire, one of several wildland blazes making problems for western states. All evacuation orders were lifted Monday night after firefighters had the blaze near Lake Isabella west of Bakersfield 50 percent contained, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

The blaze has destroyed three houses, damaged another and forced hundreds to flee their homes. At least two of the burned houses appeared to be abandoned, the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement. One other home was damaged by the fire, which charred more than 4 square miles of trees and brush in and around Sequoia National Forest and also threatened power lines and communications facilities.

On Tuesday, firefighters will look to build lines all the way around the blaze, and helicopter water drops and expected

calm winds overnight could have them off to a strong start. “We’re hoping we’re go-ing to have some good news in the morn-ing,” fire spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman said. “It’ll depend on how much they can get done and what the wind does.”

Meanwhile on the New Mexico-Arizona border, residents of two Native American communities were forced to leave their homes as strong winds fanned the flames of a wildfire burning in the Chuska Mountains.

The fire ballooned to more than 17 square miles (44 square kilometers), forcing Navajo Nation police to issue an evacuation order for parts of Naschitti and nearby Sheep Springs. About 400 people live in the area, and fire managers said more evacuations could be possible.

The fire was burning unchecked across dry pinon, juniper and brush. Gusts grounded all air support and hampered other efforts to directly attack the fast-moving flames. “We just can’t afford to put anybody in front of this thing,” said fire spokeswoman Arlene Perea. “That’s the main thing: protecting life.”

DENPASAR - Leather bags re-main to become favorites among fashionistas . Both imported products and locally made leather bags are always booming and becoming the target of consum-ers. However, it is not wrong if you occasionally try the locally made bags because they do not have to go far away to obtain it. Their quality and design are not inferior to foreign products becoming the mainstay of the artisans in Bali.

The products on offer are quite varied and complete such as handbags, luggage, shoes, purses, belts, jackets to small trinkets made of leather. Various types of leather are presented to indulge in the fashionistas, starting from cowhide leather and then evolved into the use of crocodile and snake leather.

One of the leather bag crafts-men, Riadi, living on Jalan Imam Bonjol, Denpasar, said that al-most all the materials found in the surroundings could be used as material of accessories, includ-

ing bags becoming a trend that made of cowhide. “This leather bag business is also promising because other than sold in store, the shoppers can also make and design it by themselves,” said Riadi, Sunday (Jun 15).

According to him, the business he started last year had capti-vated the hearts of the consumers. Even, the marketing of his leather bag had been reaching arow of art shops in Kuta, Sanur, Ubud, including the online business. “With my own products, I can provide competitive prices for

customers who come in person or resellers who want to take it for resale,” he said.

Various leather handicrafts, recognized Riadi, were sold to various cities such as Jakarta, Batam and Bekasi through on-line. Meanwhile, the stores all over Bali could take directly to him. “My leather material is brought in from Java,” he said.

Riadi admitted that he was assisted by 20 artisans capable of producing twenty bags each day. He could sell the leather bag of his production as many

as 10 bags per day, at the price ranging from IDR 250,000 IDR 500,000. And the delivery to each art shop could reach five to 10 bags per week, highly depend-ing on the customer demand. The material shreds that could not be used the make a bag due to its insufficient size would be used to make men’s or women’s wallet as well as a variety of flat sandals and wedges. Their prices start from IDR125,000 to IDR 200,000 according to the amount of materials required,” he affirmed. (kmb27)

According to an academician, AA Arjawa, Friday (Jun 13), so far the implementation of the BAF was not maximal, but still worth imple-menting. He added that it needed further arrange-ment and display of unique or special products so as people would not easily get bored.

“BAF poses a promotional event, so it will not work if it lacks of visitors. On that account, the innovation should be made. Moreover, the price of goods in the exhibition is relatively expensive, while the people’s purchasing power is low,” he said.

In addition, in the matter of the produc-tion of the SMEs and others, Arjawa hoped it should be packed more attractively and affordably. To make the prices cheaper, the booth rental should not be high. “It is intended to make people or craftsmen not overly bur-dened. Give priority to local people and the government should not only profit-oriented,” said Arjawa.

Similar opinion was also revealed by a practitioner of agriculture, Ketut Sugiana. “As an annual event of the Bali government, when it’s linked to tourist attraction and en-couragement of the SMEs, I think the festival is still feasible. The problem is that how far the effectiveness of the festival is and this needs to be evaluated, especially in terms of the concept,” he added.

All parties expected the activity was right on target as well as not to give monotonous and useless impression. In addition, it should also be provided with a special stand in certain block for the SMEs and agriculture. For the SMEs, local handicraft products using local materials had to be given a priority. Meanwhile, the agriculture, other than displaying the product, should also display the information about the agriculture of Bali from time to time. “The agriculture is a part of Balinese culture,” he said. BRUSSELS - The European Union on Monday said it was team-ing up with South Korea to develop a next-generation 5G wireless ser-vice quick enough to download full-length movies to a smartphone in seconds.

The deal is a big one for the EU, which was a leader in the early days of mobile technology but has trailed Asia and North America since the rise of the smartphone in providing the most up-to-date services.

5G technology -- set to be 1,000 times faster than the 4G services currently available -- is in the early stages of development, but govern-ments and technology giants are pouring billions into it so as not to be left behind.

By tying up with the South Kore-ans, the EU hopes to restore its one-time standing and not suffer from the fragmentation that has hampered the rollout of 4G technology across the 28-nation bloc.

South Korea -- home to smart-phone giant Samsung -- is invest-ing heavily in 5G. In January, the government announced a 1.6 trillion won ($1.6 billion, 1.2 billion euro) plan to build a new network.

China, the US, Britain and Ger-many have all announced big 5G projects.

In Monday’s agreement, the EU and South Korea agreed to work towards a 5G global standard, which if achieved could significantly ac-celerate the worldwide development of the technology.

The deal also sets up a partner-

ship between private consortiums that include all the biggest players in the European and Korean smart-phone markets.

South Korea is renowned for being at the forefront of Internet technology with broadband speeds that consistently out-pace those in Europe or the United States.

5G, which will allow users to download an 800-megabyte movie file in one second, “will become the new lifeblood of the digital economy and digital society,” said EU Commissioner for the digital agenda, Neelie Kroes.

“This is the first time ever that public authorities have joined to-gether in this way, with the support of private industry, to push forward the process of standardisation,” she added.

It said growth is likely to rebound to 3.0 percent next year, but to ensure that, the government should take measures like increasing the minimum wage and embarking on a strong infrastructure-building program. Moreover, the US Federal Reserve should not expect the economy to get back to full employment before the end of 2017, and that it could afford to hold its key interest rate at the zero level past the middle of next year, when the Fed has signaled it expects to raise the rate.

“The scars of recession are still visible,” IMF managing director Christine Lagarde warned.

She cited still-high long-term unemployment, low labor-force participation, and the fact that some 50 million Americans still live in poverty.

“There is no single measure that is going to deal with all those issues,” she said.

“The US should invest in its future... The priority is to invest in people and to invest in infrastructure.”

The IMF report said that the US labor market remains sig-nificantly weaker than is implied by the headline 6.3 percent unemployment rate.

It pointed to stagnant wages and the low workforce par-ticipation rate, now 62.8 percent compared to more than 66 percent before the 2008 economic crisis.

The IMF said the US government could afford to take short-term measures to strengthen growth and jobs, despite the ongo-ing large fiscal deficit and huge government debt burden.

But it said that warring political parties need to come up with a medium-term plan for addressing those problems, one that includes revising the tax structure to raise revenues, cutting the growth of health care costs, and fundamentally reforming the government’s social security pension program.

“Given the substantial economic slack in the economy, there is a strong case to provide continued policy support,” the Fund said.

Political battle -It said more government efforts to boost growth short term

would allow the Federal Reserve to more comfortably exit its easy-money stance and cut the risks that stance poses to global financial stability.

At the same time, the IMF said that “regrettably,” US politi-cians have been unable to agree on such an approach.

Stepping into a hot domestic political battle, the IMF took the side of the administration of President Barack Obama in advocating a rise in the minimum wage.

It noted that, in real terms, wages have fallen significantly over the past four decades, an issue which economists say locks many Americans in poverty.

The Fund said that nearly 50 million Americans still live in poverty, and that the principal way government policy could help would be to return to stronger growth and job creation.

But it added that increasing the minimum wage from the current federal government standard of $7.25 an hour “would help raise incomes for millions of working poor.”

“Any increase of that minimum wage would be helpful from an economic point of view,” said Lagarde.

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund on Monday slashed its forecast for the United States and urged policymakers to keep interest rates low and raise the minimum wage to strengthen growth in the world’s largest economy. The global crisis lender said in its annual report card on the US economy that the country will likely grow only 2.0 percent this year, compared with the previ-ous 2.8 percent estimate, blaming mainly the unexpected contraction in the first quarter.

MANGUPURA - Fish theft in the waters of Indonesia still hap-pens. Even, Indonesia suffers losses in the field of maritime affairs worth IDR 300 trillion per year. This problem has now become an important issue to several countries in the world.

Chief Executive of the Marine Security Coordinating Board (Ba-korkamla) of the Indonesian Army (TNI), Dr. D.A. Mamahit, on the sidelines of the fifth meeting of the Maritime Security Desktop Exercise (MSDE) recognized that other problems that often occurred in the marine areas of Indonesian were the human trafficking as well as illegal fishing.

“Well, the future development is increasingly more complex. In addition to the frontier agreement, we also face the issues on rampant human trafficking and illegal fishing. It needs the cooperation and respect to other countries. How to prevent it will require an understanding about the border, both the regulations on our sides and that of other countries,” said Mamahit, in Kuta.

According to him, the increas-ing issues about the maritime borders in the region of a country were caused by the shortage of

knowledge owned by the officials on the understanding about the agreed rules. At the moment, there were a total of 17 countries having improved shared understanding on the knowledge of maritime issues existing in their respective country. “Most importantly, it must be real-ized that maritime problems of a country cannot be separated from its neighboring countries, so it is required the enhancement on the understanding of border issues,” he said.

He pointed out that a number of our fishermen were recently declared to have violated as pass-ing the Australian maritime bor-derline. They were arrested by the authorities of Australia. “Currently, Indonesia and Australia have sev-eral things that must be agreed upon, such as the border with East Timor, Indonesia and Australia. So far, there is still unclear agreement and we are still talking about it,” he said.

He added that the MSDE meet-ing with Australian emphasized five points of discussion included the problems in marine incident rescue, legal approach, marine environmental protection such as pollution, abrasion and so on, and then built capacity such as the un-derstanding on the rules, and proper rule enforcement. Operations Manager of the Ulun Danu Beratan tourist at-traction, Wayan Mustika, said the artists would come from 20 villages around Beratan. They would feature a variety of supe-rior art activities, where one of which would be the okokan (giant cowbell) art. The art show would be held every Saturday, Sunday and national holidays. The fes-tival was deliberately held long enough to celebrate the moment of school holidays and the Eid.

“At least, we target there will be an increase in the number of tourist arrival reaching up to 13 percent because two years ago in a similar event we could also increase the tourist arrival by 10 percent,” he said.

Interesting spectacles to be offered in the biennial festival in-cluded diverse art performances. At the opening, the committee would jazz up visitors with the presentation of gamelan mu-sic and dances by children art

troupes. “Competition of bale-ganjur gamelan orchestra, barong bangkung and gamelan music will entirely involve children,” said Mustika.

In addition, some sacred danc-es would also be featured in the implementation of the art festi-val like the Muncang Ketungan dance from Antapan village. This dance told about the tradition of pounding rice. “We also show off the Legong Kraton dance from Batunya village as well as col-laboration of the Joged Genjek a cappella,” he added.

Further, he said that on Sat-urdays and Sundays would be displayed at least 5 to 6 art at-tractions starting from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, when opening the Ulun Danu Beratan Festival said the festival was expected to further introduce the Ulun Danu Beratan and it had great benefits to the community, especially in

the field of the art and culture. However, she regretted that from a variety of the arts attractions showed, the mascot dance of Ta-banan, namely the Sandat Serasi Dance seemed to have not much known to the public of Tabanan.

Even, the dance could not be presented in each event as well as the other activities. “The Sandat Serasi Dance poses the mascot dance of Tabanan composed by our artists that constitutes a welcome dance representing the region of Tabanan. Hopefully, at least all the existing dance studios will be required to know the dance in the future as well as the cultural events such as the cultural festival like this,” she said.

To further disseminate the existence of the mascot dance of Tabanan, her party planned the competition of Sandat Serasi Dance in the celebration of the town anniversary in years to come. (kmb28)

Former constitutional court chief judge Akil Mochtar was ar-rested last year by officials of the powerful anti-graft body while a businessman and lawmaker were about to hand him around three billion rupiah ($254,086), prosecutors said.

“The defendant has been le-gally and convincingly proven guilty of accepting presents (bribes)... to intervene in con-stitutional court rulings,” pros-ecutor Pulung Rinandoro told an anti-corruption court in Jakarta.

He called for a life sentence, a fine of 10 billion rupiah and the

revocation of Mochtar’s politi-cal rights.

Mochtar, 53 allegedly ac-cepted more than $4.8 million in bribes in relation to 15 disputed regional elections and is suspect-ed of having laundered more than 161 billion rupiah from 2010 to 2013, the prosecutor said.

One of the constitutional court’s main roles is to decide on electoral disputes.

The court, created in 2001, also hears cases about the consti-tution and rules on any attempt to impeach the president.

Emerson Yuntho from NGO Indonesian Corruption Watch

said he hoped judges would follow the prosecutors’ recom-mendation “in order to deter government officials from com-mitting corruption”.

The NGO said Indonesia had previously sentenced four busi-nessmen to life imprisonment for corruption.

Indonesia is consistently ranked one of the world’s most corrupt countries.

NGO Transparency Interna-tional ranked it 114th out of 177 countries and territories in its annual corruption perceptions in-dex last year. A number one rank-ing means the least corrupt.

AntaraJAKARTA - The Corruption Eradi-

cation Commission (KPK) on Tuesday questioned the former member of Democrat Party’s Central Board, Sutan Bhatoegana (SB), as a suspect in an al-leged corruption case at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

“I leave this all to Allah. Whatever is the best according to Allah, I will follow it,” stated former chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VII overseeing energy and minerals.

SB was named a suspect by the KPK in May 2014.

“Based on the developments of the case, it is believed that corruption has allegedly been committed in connection with the discussion of the revised budget of 2013 with SB as the chairman of the DPR Commission VII for 2009-2012 being the suspect,” noted KPK spokes-man Johan Budi.

Johan claimed that the suspect had allegedly received a gift or a pledge, which is believed to be given in order to make him do or not do something within his capacity to violate several articles in the anti-corruption law, which carries a

maximum sentence of 20 years impris-onment and a fine of Rp1 billion.

He noted that the corruption case was the result of the development of the case of Rudi Rubiandini, the former chief of the oil and gas regulator SKK Migas, who has already been convicted.

During court sessions, Rudi con-fessed to have given US$200 thousand to Sutan through Commission VII member Tri Julianto at a fruit shop on Jalan MT Haryono, but both Sutan and Tri have denied the allegations.

He stated that the money was given as “a post-fasting holiday allowance” to the House Commission VII mem-bers.

Sutan’s name has also surfaced for having sought a reward from a com-pany, PT Timas Suplindo, in exchange for his help in securing a tender at SKK Migas for an offshore construction project of Chevron.

Sutan worked as a deputy director in the company during the period between 2003 and 2004.

Rudi was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined Rp200 mil-lion.

AntaraJAKARTA - President Susilo Bam-

bang Yudhoyono and his entourage left Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma air force base at 8 am local time on Tuesday for Fiji, for a three-day work-ing visit at the invitation of the Fijian government.

The Indonesian head of state will take a nine-and-a-half hour flight before landing at Nadi International Airport in Fiji.

Presidential special staff for inter-national relations Teuku Faizasyah said earlier in a press statement that the president was invited to step up bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

He said that President Yudhoyono in Fiji will attend the second summit of the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) as a chief guest.

Faizasyah noted that it will be a historic visit for Yudhoyono as the first Indonesian president to tour the South Pacific region.

During his stay, the Indonesian leader will also hold a tete-a-tete with his Fijian counterpart Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, and bilateral talks

with Prime Minister Voreqe Josaia Bainimarama.

“At the meeting, both sides will dis-cuss, among others things, joint efforts to forge bilateral relations, particularly in the fields of maritime and cultural cooperation, good governance, democ-racy and regional and global issues of mutual concern,” he said.

The two heads of state will also wit-ness the signing of memorandums of understanding particularly in the areas of diplomatic training and youth and sports cooperation, he added.

As a chief guest, President Yud-hoyono will deliver a keynote to the second summit of the PIDF, he said.

He added that the presence of President Yudhoyono at the forum as a chief guest will open a chance for Indonesia to share its best experiences with islands states in the Pacific region on development programs whose success has been recognized by the international community.

“Fiji is Indonesia’s important part-ner in the South Pacific. The visit is very historical since it will be the first time ever Indonesian president to visit the South Pacific,” he said.

A weeklong strike by French rail workers is heating up as the draft law goes to the lower house of Parlia-ment for debate Tuesday.

Several hundred workers staged a protest near the National Assembly on Paris’ Left Bank, waving red union flags. The bill would pave the way to opening up the railways

The protesters blocked cars and tried to approach the parliament building, firing flares and throwing bottles. Officers responded with tear gas and wrestled a few protesters to the ground.

BEIJING — In the more than 100 days since her husband disappeared along with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Zhang Qian’s world has collapsed. She quit her job, sleeps rarely and prefers not to go out, except to the Buddhist temples where she has found some solace. “At the temple, I can speak from my heart to my hus-band,” Zhang, 28, said on a recent visit to the Temple of Spiritual Light in the western hills of Beijing. She broke down in sobs before continuing.

“I think he can hear me ... I have so much to tell him, there is so much I have not said. I hope the Buddha will carry those words to him and bring him back.”

Much of the world has moved on from the frenzied interest in the mysterious March 8 disappearance of the plane, but relatives of the 239 people missing can-not. Satellite data shows that the plane went down in a remote area of the southern Indian Ocean far from any land, but with no trace of the aircraft recovered, many cling to a flicker of hope — however faint — that their loved ones might still be alive. “It may be my fantasy, but what if one day he sends some distress signals and he gets saved, and that will be the end of this?” Zhang said.

Her husband was among 153 Chinese on the plane. Chinese culture places an especially heavy emphasis on finding and seeing the remains of people believed dead before true grieving and the process of mov-ing on can begin. The absence of proof of death has made closure elusive for all relatives, said Lawrence Palinkas, professor of social work at the University of Southern California.

“When there is no physical proof of death, it is easier to remain in (denial) for a much longer period of time,” he said. “At this point, those who have not accepted the possibility that the plane crashed and all aboard were lost are relying on extended family and friends to maintain the belief that family members are still alive, or that hope is still viable until the remains are found.”

Liu Weijie held onto his wife’s plane ticket for a U.S. trip in late May for more than two months, even though she was among the Flight 370 passengers. They were supposed to go to their son’s graduation ceremony. He returned the ticket three days before the flight, and canceled his own trip as well. In messages posted to a mobile phone blog, Liu apologized to his wife for not allowing her to visit their son earlier. “I truly regret that I did not let you visit your son during the Chinese New Year. Now it’s been nine months

since you last saw your son,” he wrote.“The sense of helplessness, the feeling of power-

lessness, and the pain have not eased but only worsened as times goes by,” Liu said in an interview. “Any holi-day or days of significance have become unbearable. I don’t want to hear any mention of them.”

Many of the Chinese relatives have been reluctant to talk about their missing kin to avoid any suggestion that they are gone for good and to keep the focus on finding the missing plane, though they have become somewhat more likely to speak about them now. They say their belief that their loved ones are still alive helps them get up in the morning and care for their families.

“With his photos on the walls, I don’t feel that he is absent, and seeing him in the photos has given me strength to do my best to take care of our small child before he returns,” said Zhang Ying, whose husband also was aboard Flight 370. At the same time, it is heart-wrenching for her to be without the man who hoisted their baby above his head on weekend out-ings, and who fell asleep while holding her tiny hand. Zhang said she can no longer produce milk for her daughter, and that her mother-in-law has lost hearing from crying so much.

Cheng Liping, whose husband was on the plane, called the missing flight “a fatal blow that has spun my entire world.” Her heart ached when her 6-year-old son called “daddy” to a stranger who walked out of a car in their Beijing neighborhood. As for Zhang Qian, she is rarely outside at all. She quit her work as an office clerk and shuts herself at home.

“I don’t go out anymore because outside I see the shadow of my husband and me together,” Zhang said. Zhang met Wang Houbin nearly nine years ago in Beijing in their college freshman year. Wang was on Flight 370 returning home after working on an art exhibit in Kuala Lumpur.

“I am afraid to go out. I don’t speak any more,” said Zhang, who only ventures out to meet other relatives of Flight 370 passengers and to visit temples. “I used to sleep a lot but I have spent many nights without closing my eyes, not even with the help of sleeping pills.” Her parents have moved in with her, but sometimes they become outlets for her grief and frustration. “I throw tempers at my dad and mom because I cannot help myself,” she said, bead-like tears rolling down her thin cheeks at the mention of Wang.

She finds comfort in Buddhist temples, though she was not religious before the plane vanished. “I didn’t believe in this in the past, but now I pray wholeheart-edly for the return of my husband,” she said.

He argued if the reclamation process was still ongoing, it proved that it was impossible to be carried out without the knowledge of Bali government. On that account, the lawsuits and escort to the reclamation process should be directed at the local government. Besides, if there were facts indicating the four hamlets at Tanjung Benoa village already agreed to reject the reclamation, presumably the Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) of Bali should no longer need to invite a hearing for the socialization of the reclamation fea-sibility by the four universities other than Udayana University because the study was not relevant.

“The provincial government should acknowledge that not every corner of Bali’s land can be sold to make money and used as a source of income be-cause money is not everything for the people of Bali,” he said.

He mentioned that it was not the right time to work on the Benoa Bay mega project because the current condition the people did not have adequate resources, so the reclama-tion of Benoa Bay would only result in a new class of people, local com-munity would be marginalized be-cause it was impossible to combine the management of tourism industry with daily life of the surrounding communities. MADRID — Spanish police are holding 10 people including a for-mer Guantanamo Bay detainee for allegedly recruiting jihadi militants to fight abroad, mainly in Iraq and Syria.

The National Court said Tuesday they would appear before a judge soon.

An Interior Ministry statement said eight of the suspects were Mo-roccans or men born in Morocco. An

Argentine and a Bulgarian were also detained in Monday’s raids.

The ministry identified one of those arrested, Moroccan Lahcen Ikassrien, as the suspected leader of the cell which had sent nine militants to fight for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL.

Ikassrien had been arrested in Afghanistan in 2001 and held at Guantanamo Bay. He was extradited to Spain in 2005, but was acquitted for lack of evidence a year later.

Alas Kedaton located at Ku-kuh village, Marga subdistrict (Tabanan) is the area of sustain-able forest environment rich in different kinds of local plants. Besides, this region also poses an appropriate habitat for mon-keys, bats, snakes, birds and other animal species.

In addition, the Alas Keda-ton has also owned an ad-vantage as the preserver of cultural sites existing at the Dalem Temple of Alas Keda-ton. The temple is located in the middle of tourist attrac-tion along with archaeological objects estimated to originate in hundreds of years old.

“Sustainability of this site has become the advantages of the Alas Kedaton as prospective recipient of Kalpataru Award,” said the Division Head of the Urban Community at the Assis-tant Deputy of the Community’s Role Improvement, Ministry of Environment, Umi Rusianawati, on the sidelines of the event.

The Heat got rolled in the NBA Finals by San Antonio, losing in five games, the last three of them lopsided, and for the first time since 2011 there would be no championship parade in Miami. The same team that the Heat wore down in the 2013 finals had all the answers, ushering in a summer for Miami that will be filled with questions about the futures of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Bosh.

“I don’t think anybody really en-joyed this season like in years past,” Bosh told The Associated Press. “There was no, like, genuine joy all the time. It seemed like work. It was a job the whole year. Winning was just a relief. Losing was a cloud over us sometimes and then we’d break out of it — and then go right back. But we got here. We had a chance. They were just better.”

That being said, and while hardly committing to a fifth season of the “Big 3” era in Miami, Bosh made it clear: The group wants to remain intact. Whether or not personal choices and

financial realities of a salary-capped, luxury-taxed world will allow that to happen remain unclear. “We want to stay together, man,” Bosh said. “I’ll say that. It’s a great organization, great team and great city. And to have a chance, that’s all you can ask for.”

James insisted he hasn’t thought about what decisions he has to make this summer. Wade has often expressed interest in remaining with the Heat. Bosh has said repeatedly that he wants to stay. But all can become free agents in the next couple weeks, and the Heat might be rooting for that to happen.

By opting out, they could get new deals with the Heat and create financial flexibility for team president Pat Riley to lure new pieces into a locker room that will need new faces. “The whole league continues to get better every single year,” James said. “Obviously we would need to get better from every facet, every position. It’s just how the league works.”

For as well as he played in Game

5 — 31 points and 10 rebounds in what would be the final game of Miami’s run as champion — James’ best display of defense came afterward, when pressed repeatedly about his future. “I will deal with my summer when I get to that point,” James said. “Me and my team will sit down and deal with it. I love Miami. My family loves it. But obviously right now that’s not even what I’m thinking about. You guys are trying to find answers. I’m not going to give you one.”

The Heat aren’t expected to hold exit interviews until later this week. James and Wade shared the postgame podium Sunday, possibly for the last time. Wade seemed to be laboring in the last two games of the finals, shoot-ing just 28 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the foul line.

“It wasn’t just Dwyane,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said when asked about Wade’s struggles. “It was pretty much everybody except for LeBron.” Wade’s knees and health have been a concern all year, never more than in the finals. “I’m all right,” Wade said. “Can’t win them all. You try to, but you can’t win them all.”

The Heat have known for four years that this summer of decisions and pos-sible changes was looming, and have planned accordingly.

LONDON - When Grigor Dimitrov grasped the Queen’s Club trophy after winning the Aegon Championships on Sunday a quick glance at the names engraved on its plinth might have given him goose bumps. In edging past Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in a gripping contest the 23-year-old Bulgarian, long-regarded as a future grand slam champion, etched his name alongside some of the greatest exponents of the grasscourt arts.

John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras all won the traditional Wimbledon warm-up tournament just a few miles away from the All England Club while of the current generation Lleyton Hewitt, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray have all found the slick lawns to their liking. While winning at Queen’s Club is no guarantee of success at Wimbledon, form at the homely Victorian club next to Baron’s Court Underground station has traditionally been a useful barometer for the year’s third grand slam tournament.

It proved the perfect Wimbledon tune-up for McEnroe in 1981 and 1984, the blue touch paper for flame-haired teenager Becker to ram-page to Wimbledon glory in 1985. Sampras won at Queen’s in 1995 and 1999 before serving and volleying his way to the Wimbledon title while Australian Hewitt did the double in 2002.

Nadal’s famous de-throning of Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2008 was preceded by the title at Queen’s while last year Murray triumphed there before ending his country’s 77 year-wait for a men’s singles champion at the All England Club. World No.13 Dimitrov, who already has a Wimbledon title to his name, albeit in the boy’s singles, seemed well aware of the significance of his 6-7(8) 7-6(1) 7-6(6) win over Lopez - his third title this year, all on different surfaces.

“We’re about to find that out in a week,” Dimitrov told reporters when asked if he could repeat Murray’s double. “It’s always I think special to win that week. To me this tournament in particular has been that tournament I always wanted to win. I remember playing as a teenager here, and ever since I have dreamt about that moment.

“You can feel it in the spirit of the trophy itself. When you lift it, it means something. “The only thing I can say is I’m going to be with a lot of positive vibes coming out to Wimbledon.” Few doubt that Dimitrov has all the weapons to win Wimbledon - a damaging first serve, the ability to attack off both wings, an ease around the net and ability to improvise.

On Sunday, in saving a match point against the left-handed Span-iard whose game looks tailor-made for grass, he also showed that the mental toughness that was occasionally questioned in the past is now part of his make-up. Perhaps it is no coincidence that French Open champion Maria Sharapova, his girlfriend, is renowned as being one of the sport’s most ferocious fighters.

“Of course I think having Maria on my side definitely adds up, and a tremendous champion like her, there is a lot to learn,” Dimitrov said. “But it’s still completely different areas in a way, women’s tennis and men’s tennis. “But there is certainly a good amount that I have learned throughout so far.”

“This is going to be our World Cup,” wrote Germany’s best-selling daily Bild newspaper. “Mueller is already talking about winning it all.” Even though German newspapers are usu-ally critical and tend to look for the fly in the ointment, they could find nothing to complain about with the dominant performance against Portugal.

“Mueller destroys Portugal,” read the head-line in Die Welt. The conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) said “everything went perfectly against Portugal” and added that everything Loew had wanted to happen had happened.

“Everything Loew planned worked out well,” wrote the FAZ. “Everything he wanted worked -- a lot of variety, quick attacks that originate in midfield and overwhelming the opponent with speed and shifting positions.”

The paper said Germany had “made Por-

tugal dizzy with the way they played”. It added: “This match was the way Loew wants Germany to play soccer, a style that had only succeeded in brief phases so far this year.”

BRILLIANT MUELLER

The Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper in Munich said the only blemish was an injury to defender Mats Hummels. “Germany opens its tournament with other-worldly strength,” wrote the Sueddeutsche. “The start of the World Cup could not have been any better for the Germany team. Mueller was brilliant with his three goals.”

Berlin’s Der Tagesspiegel newspaper said Loew deserved credit for the daunting perfor-mance. “Eins, zwei, drei, vier! Germany beats Portugal 4-0 and Joachim Loew did everything right before the match,” der Tagesspiegel said.

“The injury to Hummels is the only downside but apparently that’s not even as seri-ous as first

thought.”ARD TV com-

mentator Reinhold Beckmann also got caught up in the euphoria. “The 4-0 win over Portugal now makes it clear that Germany are among the top favourites to win the tournament alongside Brazil and the Netherlands,” said Beckmann. “Germany showed a lot of courage in the match. But where was the self-appointed superstar named Ronaldo?”

NATAL, Brazil - Juergen Klinsmann extended his perfect record in opening World Cup matches when the United States beat Ghana 2-1 on Monday but after their late winner he was more concerned with the flaws exposed in his team. Clint Dempsey’s early goal gave the U.S. the perfect start and, after Andre Ayew equalised for Ghana, John Brooks

powered home an 86th-minute header to grab the win and maintain the coach’s 100 percent record in World Cup openers.

The 49-year-old, a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, said his captain’s strike, officially timed at 29 seconds after kickoff, had perhaps come too early. “The whole bench was jumping around,” he said. “If you score after just a minute you think there can’t be

SAO PAULO — One of the World Cup’s most exciting games had the most empty seats in the first round of the tournament in Brazil. More than 3,500 seats were empty when the Netherlands routed defending champion Spain 5-1 in the northeastern city of Salvador on Friday, according to FIFA’s match reports and its numbers on stadium capacities.

Although it wasn’t the worst crowd — 48,173 attended the match at the Arena Fonte Nova — it was the game with the most unused seats. Crowds have been good so far, but there were many matches with empty seats across the 12 host cities. Nearly all matches were sold out ahead of the tournament, and FIFA said “the empty seats corresponded to either no-shows or people who did not collect their tickets.”

Among the matches with visible empty seats was the high-profile encounter between England and Italy in the jungle city of Manaus, when 39,800 were in hand. More than 503,000 people have attended the initial 10 matches of the first World Cup in Brazil since 1950.

Another match with a high number of unused seats was Ivory Coast-Japan in Recife, when 2,316 chairs were empty, according to the most recent numbers on FIFA.com. The Uruguay-Costa Rica match in Fortaleza had 1,669 empty seats, while the Colombia-Greece game in Belo Horizonte had 1,085 unused chairs. The other matches played by Sunday were mostly full, according to the numbers avail-able from FIFA.

The biggest crowd was at the Argentina-Bosnia match, when 74,738 fans were at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. FIFA said 39,216 people saw the Mexico-Cameroon match in Natal, the smallest attendance by Sunday. More than 62,100 people attended the World Cup opener between Brazil and Croatia at the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo.

Football’s governing body said it received “an unprecedented number” of more than 11 million requests for the nearly 3.1 tickets available for the tournament in Brazil. More than 2.98 million tickets were sold and only about 14,000 remained on sale on the eve of the competition last week. FIFA said that just over 7,100 tickets were still available on Monday.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Rio de Janeiro’s state’s top tourism of-ficial on Monday declared the first five days of the month-long World Cup a success, saying that those who predicted a debacle have thus far been proven wrong. Carlos Magnavita told a news conference that Rio residents gave a “dem-onstration of civility” during the first game in the city, Sunday’s

much-anticipated face-off between Argentina and Bosnia.

Last year’s Confederations Cup, a World Cup dry-run, was marred by massive, nationwide protests over perceived misuse of public funds, and many observers had predicted demonstrators would take advantage of the spotlight of the World Cup to air their grievances before an international audience. But so far, World Cup matches have attracted only a scattering of

demonstrators — who have consis-tently been wildly outnumbered by security forces — and haven’t led to any disruption of matches. “I think that the pessimists who were bet-ting on a failure on our part need to revise” their positions, Magnavita said. Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, Vinicius Lages, said the ministry’s assessment of the beginning of the tournament was overwhelmingly positive.

“From the point of view of

what was expected in terms of public transit, lodgings in the host cities, the ease of getting to the matches, from the point of view of the interactions between fans and of Brazilians’ hospitality, what we’re hearing is that it’s been very positive,” he said. “The expecta-tion that I have is that we are able in the coming days and weeks to keep up the same level of service that we’ve had, with our services functioning satisfactorily, and

tending in a calm, tranquil manner the Brazilians who are traveling throughout the country, as well as the foreigners.”

He said 600,000 tourists from 186 countries were expected to be in Brazil for the tournament, in ad-dition to some 3 million domestic tourists, adding that it appeared everyone was enjoying themselves. “We haven’t had any problems so far,” Lages said. “Nothing seri-ous.”

Klinsmann still a perfect starter but sees U.S. flaws

anything better than that.“After that it maybe wasn’t so good because we

sat back and let them come to us, that is why I was screaming on the sideline to take control of the game. We had problems controlling the ball and making passes.” Klinsmann said he always believed the U.S. would win even when Ghana equalised but knows they will have to improve some aspects of their game for the Group G games with Portugal and Germany.

“It was a very enjoyable moment when the goal came, when a late goal like this happens then you see a bench jumping up full of joy and excitement,” he said. “(But) the match showed us a lot of areas we have to do better for the second game. We gave too much of the game to Ghana. We will take all those pieces and analyse them and show the players.”

The former Germany striker played in three World Cups, helping his team start the tournament by beating Yugoslavia 4-1 in 1990, Bolivia 1-0 in 1994 and the United States 2-0 in 1998. Klinsmann also coached Germany to a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in their first game of the 2006 tournament on home soil.

Goalscorer Dempsey claimed a little bit of tourna-ment history for himself at the Dunas arena, becoming the first American to score at three World Cups. The 31-year-old ended the contest with a suspected broken nose after taking a blow to the face from a Ghanaian boot but he was not going to get much sympathy from his coach. “I broke mine three or four times,” said Klinsmann. “It’s alright. He’ll be alright in a few days ...”

The bill would pave the way to opening up the railways

to competition, and opponents fear it will lead to job losses and safety problems.

IMF cuts US forecast, issues warningAgence France-Presse

(kmb28)

The announcement contained an image of what appeared to be the edge of a smartphone -- a device long rumored to be in the works by the Seattle, Washing-ton firm, which is a retailer of a multitude of goods and digital content. “If it is a smartphone, Amazon would automatically be considered one of the top play-ers before it even ships its first phone,” said Gerry Purdy, chief mobile analyst for Compass In-telligence.

(kmb25)

Chairman of the Center for Business Economic Data Analysis, Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University, Dr. Sudjana Budhi, said the development of Benoa Bay reclamation would be definitely beneficial for several officials in Bali Province, not the public. Villages at Benoa Bay would be isolated by the presence of tourist destinations in the version of investors because the tourist destination development was impossible to be coupled with the daily life of local community all at once.

“The tourist destinations will only get in touch with tourist management services, so the access control of tourism will isolate the locals. If the investors are said to bring in job opportunities, it is only a slogan that is not proved to have a positive impact on the community, especially at the location of Benoa Bay,” said Budhi Sudjana in Denpasar.

He said the parameter of job opportunities defined by the

Bali government was too narrow, where the investors were expressed as the carriers of growth and employment provid-ers. Meanwhile, the government was remarkably ignoring that livelihood as farmers and fishermen at Benoa Bay was also job opportunity. Even, they were more independent than they should devote themselves as laborers on investors.

“The development of tourism facilities and industry is a kind of exclusive industry that will surely close all the access having no interest in the tourist services. Then, it can be ascertained if the entire customary villages in the Benoa Bay area will be isolated, as well as establishes a new enclave and becomes strangers in their own respective region. Economic impact could not be ascertained to drip to Balinese people because the business drive controlled by outside investors would not likely to share beyond business rules. No investor would dare to fight for the livelihood of

poor people,” he said.According to him, armed with the Presidential Regulation

No.51/2014, the local investors would invite foreign investors to invest in the development of Benoa Bay tourist destina-tion, so the investors got fresh capital to build facilities in the tourist destination. Local investors could also use foreign investors as a weapon to suppress Balinese people because the inconvenience to foreign investors would be linked to the future of international tourism. Investors with limited capital could share risk and foreign investors were used as a weapon in facing the people of Bali.

“Meanwhile, Bali government will allow the process of searching for funds to foreign investors because it would get a share from the transaction process. Thus, the collabo-ration will benefit the investors, having prosperous impact on the livelihoods of the officials because the investors can control the state land at a low price, rather than purchas-ing ready-to-use land from the people. People who have performed rituals for the peace of Balinese people do not get any share,” he said.

Reclamation of Benoa Bay kindles new poverty pockets

Bali PostDENPASAR - Smooth reclamation plan of Benoa Bay with the issuance of Presidential Regulation No.

51/2014 continues to reap criticism from various elements of Balinese society. People consider the policy will not only bring in socio-economic impacts on the people of Bali, but even result in environmental dam-age and new poverty pockets.
