Camey

Last month I wrote about little girls dressing sexy and how I blame the parents for letting this happen and I was not surprised to receive feedback from my readers. But what did surprise me was all the feedback I received from the men who took offense to my “what you should not wear after 30” article. I was called “sexist”, “bitchy”; an “old married hag” and so on…apparently there are a lot of men who like to wear jeans that let your ass hang out and lots of gold chains. I am sorry if I hit a nerve…but I will stand by my opinion…over the age of 30 you should dress more like an adult and less like a thug…

So, this month I thought I would approach the topic once again. But I will tread lightly so I don’t offend my sensitive readers. If you are looking for a fun way to torment the man in your life, here is one that works every time. Your boyfriend, your husband, your coworker and even your roommate will react to this subtle form of playful emasculation.

Here’s what you do: Regardless of what he’s wearing, a business suit, a t-shirt and jeans, athletic gear, or a service uniform of some kind, look at him and in the most sincere voice you can muster, say “Wow, I love your cute little outfit.” Then, excuse yourself to use the ladies room and let the words seep into his brain.

Men do not think of the clothes they wear as an “outfit,” let alone a “cute little outfit.” So when you zing these words his way, they will catch him off guard and strip away his masculinity before he even knows what hit him.

You can use this torment technique on a guy just to tease him, or you can use it to really annoy that egomaniac in your life.

Just imagine these scenarios:

The jerk you work with comes into the office one day wearing a nice, expensive-looking, classy suit. He clearly thinks he looks awesome. What do you do? You go in for the kill of course. Catch him in the hallway when a bunch of other people are around and yell out “Wow, I loooove your cute little outfit.” Then, promptly walk to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee.

Or

Your college boyfriend has been a schmuck lately. Now, he’s looking for his football uniform before his big game. His friends are waiting for him at the door. What do you do? You help him out of course. Yell to him “I think I saw your cute little outfit upstairs hanging on the back of the door.”

But remember it’s all in the delivery. When you say “cute little outfit,” be sweet, sincere, and nonchalant, as if there is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary about those words. Let the phrase roll off your tongue so it takes him a minute to realize that you just hit his manliness in a way that it’s never been hit before.

*Sigh*…so many fun ways to torment men, so little time.

Life can be a rough road. Sometimes that rough road is more than just rough, but rather hazardous, full of pot holes, glass, and nails. When life throws something at us, and we make it through however, we grow from that experience, and in the case of that hazardously rough road, something amazing can develop out of crossing to the other side. For Jacob Morin of Amarillo, persevering through the path dealt to him, has pushed him to create art that is eye catching and beautiful, and has formed a new artistic craze for our area, Mad Love Angels.

Growing up, Jacob was born and raised in Amarillo. Throughout his early years, he was in and out of foster care, and so lacked the family stability that many of us take for granted growing up. As he grew older, he got caught up in the pitfalls often associated with a harsh youth, getting mixed up in drugs and alcohol at an early age. His error in life choices eventually caught up with him, leading to a place that many people involved in drugs end up landing; into a life and death situation.

On Aug. 18th, 2002, Jacob was involved in a drug related shooting where he was shot in the neck, with the bullet going all the way through his head. Miraculously, Jacob lived, and even more amazingly, only spent 17 hours in the hospital and retained all of his cognitive abilities. After that, Jacob began to back away from drugs, and would eventually come to quit them all together. He knew that he needed to leave that world as a whole, and came to the realization that this path he had been on was not positive. He moved to Austin for a short stint and worked at Maggie Maes, one of Austin’s oldest bars and live music hubs for over 30 years. In 2008, Jacob moved back to Amarillo and got involved with Family Support Services as a volunteer. It was then that Jacob began to find where he needed to go with his life, to follow his passion for art.

Jacob has been enthusiastic about art ever since childhood. Even during his times of drug use and alcoholism, Jacob never lost his fervor for art. One of the driving forces that spurned his interest in art initially was his uncle, Doug Palmer. Jacob never had the opportunity to be close to his uncle due to him (Doug) being in prison. Doug was an avid prison artist though, and created art for the guards and even the warden. Jacob knew his uncle only through his art and it was that faint but expressive link that drew Jacob to his own artistic pursuits. In addition to his uncle some of Jacob’s other artistic influences include Salvador Dali and Vincent van Gogh, citing that he has even watched every documentary over Van Gogh that he could find.

Mad Love AngelsJacob Morin’s

Page 9: Edge Monthly August Issue

In March 2009, despite the positive changes in his life, Jacob still found himself nearly broke. Wondering what he could do for extra money, he began taking some of the prints he’d collected over the years and began painting graffiti stencil art on the backs of the prints. He then went to bars, restaurants, and coffee shops and sold them. He even had a fair amount of success just selling them to people on the street. Those angel paintings would eventually become the first host of Mad Love Angels that we know today.

Since that time, Jacob has painted art for local businesses and contin-ues to paint and sell his Mad Love Angels. His work can be seen at Young’s Sushi, Pink, Tatums, Whiskers, El Braceros, and the Glass House, to name a few. In addition, he has donated Mad Love Angel paintings to a multitude of organizations for events and auctions including Family Support Services 1st Annual Mardi Gras, Habitat for Humanity, Campfire USA, Alcoholics Anonymous 66th Anniversary Fundraiser, West Texas Catholic Student Service Center White Elephant Auction, and is now hoping to donate one Mad Love Angel painting to each child in the Make a Wish Foundation.

Jacob approaches his art with a true creative outlook stating, “I try to make my paintings the way that music sounds, I’ll give your eyes butterflies (as the old metaphor “butterflies in your stomach” from music).” Jacob has also expanded into customizing personal items like sunglasses, watches, and even cars. In addition, he also paints more conventional paintings, utilizing spray paint, acrylic paint, fabrics, glitters, and glues, emphasizing illusions of texture and layering along with individuality.

Each piece that Jacob does is unique and no two are exactly alike, even when the same colors are used. This distinctiveness is what has come to create so much appeal for his Mad Love Angels. Each angel starts at only $25 and so is also a great piece for affordability. Jacob does accept special requests for color combinations with his Mad Love Angels and typically does about 15 per weekend. 10 Manly DrinksDoes your mind sometimes go blank when you belly up to the bar and you're not in the mood for your usual? Let's be real, it can be embar-rassing guessing and getting served some neon-pink drink. You want a sure thing but you also need something a bit more, well, manly. A drink that won't make your buddies raise their eyebrows when you order. And while there are hundreds of 'manly' drinks out there, here are ten macho mixed drinks that are sure to impress your friends and, hope-fully, the cute bartender. Bottoms up.

KamikazeThe name alone sounds like a macho drink. Made with five different types of liquor, throwing back a few of these , while remaining on your feet, is a truly herculean task.

1 1/4 oz vodka 1 1/4 oz lime juice1 1/4 oz triple sec

• Shake all ingredients together, pour it into a shot glass and serve.

Captain and CokeThe always popular Captain and Coke is a classic combo. While any brand of rum and cola will suffice, the original pairing of Captain Morgan and Coca-Cola will always taste the sweetest.

1 1/2 oz Captain Morgan(r) Original Spiced Rum4 oz Coca- Cola(r)

Jag Bombs

Made famous by college frat boys, nothing gets the party started like Jag Bombs. The highly caffeinated Red Bull(r) helps counteract depressant effects of the alcohol. Proceed with caution, but party all night.

1/2 can Red Bull1 to 2 oz of Jagermeister(r) herbal liqueur

• Pour the energy drink into a glass, to desired level. Fill shot glass

with Jagermeister(r). Drop shot glass into Red Bull and drink immedi-ately.

MartiniJames Bond's drink of choice, enough said.

1 1/2 oz gin 1 dash orange bitters1/2 oz dry vermouth Olives to garnish

• Note: James Bond actually drinks a vodka martini, so to truly repli-cate the great 007 substitute the gin for vodka. Stir ingredients with ice and then strain into a martini glass. (It is suggested you make this drink with quality liquor, which is normally smoother, since there are few flavor add-ins to dilute the strong alcohol taste.)

Old FashionAn oldie, but a goodie- this drink has been around since the late 1800's and remains a favorite today. If you want your drink truly old fash-ioned, make sure it is made with water and not club soda- a popular new substitute for this drink. The whiskey in this drink can be substi-tuted with brandy should whiskey not be your thing, to create a Brandy Old Fashion.

2 oz rye whiskey 1 tsp water1 sugar cube 2 dashes Angostura bitters

• Dissolve sugar in water and Angostura bitters. Then ad ice to glass and top off with whiskey.

Black and TanMen are to beer like bees are to honey; they simply can't stay away from the sweet nectar for too long. So, order a classic Black and Tan, it won't take you too far out of your comfort zone and there's probably no manlier "mixed" drink out there. Cheers.

1/2 pint Pale Ale1/2 pint Stout or Porter

• Make an Irish Black and Tan with a combination of Guinness and Smithwick's or showcase local beers to your buddies by creating a Black and Tan with area microbrews.

Page 19: Edge Monthly August Issue

Gin and TonicOf all gin cocktails, this one is the most iconic. There's nothing fancy about a Gin and Tonic, just honest to goodness flavor, if you use good gin, with hint of old world charm.

2 oz. gin 1 lime wedge5 oz. tonic water

• The secret to this drink is quality gin; it will set you back a pretty penny, but will make one smooth drink. Served on the rocks.

Irish Car BombsBeer and liquor is a volatile combination, but this drink takes it to the next level. Combining a stout with two types of liquor is nothing to laugh at and you'll need to chug it since the Bailey's causes the mixture to curdle rather quickly. Clearly this drink is not for begin-ners.

1/2 pint Guinness(r) 1/2 oz Jameson(r) whiskey1/2 oz Bailey's(r) Irish Cream

• Fill shot glass with the mixture of whiskey and Irish cream. Drop shot glass into Guinness. (You can use any mixture of whiskey, Irish Cream, and Stout to make the drink. The ones listed above are the most often used, because they are all, obviously, Irish.)

Scotch and SodaIt's got Scotch, it's simple, and it's effortlessly cool- what's not to love.

1 oz. club soda1 1/2 oz scotch

• Serve over ice. (On the rocks.)

ManhattanLong the drink of its namesake's elite society, nothing says class like a Manhattan. A true Manhattan should be made with a rye whiskey, but bourbon is often substituted.

1 1/2 oz rye whiskey 1 dash angostura bitters1/2 oz sweet vermouth

As he continues to tour in support of his 2010 album "Hang Cool Teddy Bear" -- and to commemorate his 40th anniversary as a record-ing artist -- Meat Loaf has three new projects in the works, including a studio album that will feature rappers Chuck D from Public Enemy and Lil Jon.

"Ever since we started with ('Hang Cool Teddy Bear' producer) Rob Cavallo, from that minute on I've been back in the music business and having a really, really great time -- which I haven't had for five years before that," Meat Loaf, who's returned to Sony Music -- which released three of his albums, including 1977's multi-platinum "Bat Out of Hell" -- tells Billboard.com.

First up will be "Hell in a Handbasket," due out in February (except for Australia and New Zealand) and an album Meat Loaf calls "the most personal record I've ever made. It's about how I feel the world's gone to hell in a handbas-ket. It's really the first record that I've ever put out about how I feel about life and how I feel about what's going on at the moment." Meat Loaf says the album is finished -- no release date has yet been established -- and "sounds different," although he adds that "it's rock, definitely rock," produced by Paul Crook, who's part of his current touring band, with Cavallo consulting.

As for the rappers, Meat Loaf met Lil Jon when the two appeared on "Celebrity Apprentice" this past spring, while Chuck D came through Anthrax's Scott Ian, who is Meat Loaf's son-in-law. "(D) was going to do one thing, and he came back and did something else and we

flipped out," Meat Loaf reports.

Meat Loaf also has about nine songs towards another studio album, who's title we won't reveal. "We've started to do drum tracks on those songs, and we'll get more in pretty soon," he says. Meanwhile he's planning a 2012 Christmas album called "Hot Holidays" that will feature guests such as Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire "and different rock people and some actors...After I played Sony ('Hell in a Hand Basket') I said, 'Look, I've got two other records. I've got a Christmas record and I've got another record,' and they said, 'Well, get us the Christmas record and start working on the other one.' So there you go -- I'll just keep recording."

Meat Loaf -- whose first album, "Stoney & Meatloaf" with current Bob Seger backup singer Shaun Murphy, came out in 1971 on Motown's Rare Earth label -- says he's also keeping an eye out for further acting opportuni-ties, although at this point "I'm more focused on the music than I've been in a long time." But he's also happy to be name-checked in an new TV ad for Allstate Insurance. "I liked it. I think it's funny," he notes. "They showed it to me, and they paid me for (use of) my picture. It's autographed, by the way; it goes by so fast you can't really read it, but it says, 'To the profes-sor...' It's pretty cool."

Meat Loaf is recording in-between tour dates, which go into early September in the U.S. He's also booked a run of Australia and New Zealand for for October, including a spot on the A Day on the Green festival Oct. 8 in Hunter Valley. "Hell in a Handbasket" will be released in those countries to coincide with the tour.

Kings of Leon Cancel Entire U.S. Tour After Dallas 'Fiasco'

Kings of Leon announced the cancellation of their U.S. tour following an onstage meltdown at a performance in Dallas on Friday night (July 29). Frontman Caleb Followill walked offstage after claiming he was too hot to perform, and the band subse-quently postponed its show in Houston scheduled for the follow-ing night.

"We are so sorry to say Kings of Leon are canceling their entire US tour due to Caleb Followill suffer-ing from vocal issues and exhaus-tion," reads a statement from the band's publicist. "The band is devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break."

The statement also says that the 28 dates "cannot be rescheduled due to the band's international tour schedule. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase. Tickets purchased online or via phones will be automatically refunded. The band will resume touring in Canada at the Rogers Center in Vancouver, BC, on September 28th. That show was originally schedule for September 14th."

The tour was scheduled to make a swing throughout the Southeast

this week, starting with Tampa on Tuesday (Aug. 2) and winding through West Palm Beach (Aug. 3), Charlotte (Aug. 5) and Virginia Beach (Aug. 6) before heading up to the Northeast.

So far, the band's response to the scrapped tour comes from Twitter and, understandably, they're not very happy about it. "Utterly depressed. It's completely out of my hands. Family has to come 1st. If bass solos & backing vocals were more popular, I'd be there," bassist Jared Followill wrote. "Thanks to all my friends, family, & fans. I'm not going to stop working. I'm going to spend time writing songs and looking to the future."

Nathan Followill, drummer and the band's elder, followed that up by insisting the band was simply taking a break. "We just need some rest," he said. "Thanks 4 under-standing. WE ARE NOT BREAK-ING UP!"

During Friday's Dallas show, Caleb Followill told fans at the Gexa Energy Pavilion that his voice was "100 percent gone" due to the heat. "I'm gonna go back-stage and I'm gonna vomit, I'm gonna drink a beer and I'm gonna come back out and play three more songs," Followill told the crowd before leaving the stage for good.
