    Relationship with previous specifications and qualifications

    This specification BA034138 is issue 3 and is a direct specification replacement for specification N031277 Edexcel level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young Peoples Services (England) (QCF).

    This issue 3 specification has been released to inform centres that the following unit has been added to the general optional unit group for this qualification: Unit 71: Understand Professional Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care or Children and Young Peoples Settings.

    From October 2012, the Edexcel Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young Peoples Services (England) (QCF) is a component of the Leadership, Management and Specialist Practice in Adult Social Care (England) Higher Level Apprenticeship. Apprentices must undertake unit number 71: Understand Professional Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care or Children and Young Peoples Settings as this is a mandatory requirement of the Higher Level Apprenticeship in England from September 2012. This 6 credit unit is in the optional unit group of the relevant qualification pathway (ie either B4 or C4 or D4 or E4 or F4 or G4).

    The addition of Unit 71: Understand Professional Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care or Children and Young Peoples Settings is clearly indicated with sidebars at all relevant points in this document.

    Centres will notice that Unit 71: Understand Professional Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care or Children and Young Peoples Settings contains additional delivery and assessment guidance. This guidance supports the delivery and assessment of the new Higher Level Apprenticeship in England.

    Key Features of the Edexcel Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young Peoples Services (England) (QCF)

    This qualification:

    is nationally recognised

    is based on the Health and Social Care National Occupational Standards (NOS). The NOS, assessment principles and qualification structure(s) are owned by Skills for Care and Development.

    What is the purpose of this qualification?

    This qualification aims to guide and assess development of knowledge, understanding and skills in management and advanced practice within health and social care and children and young peoples services. This qualification confirms competence in these areas and serves as the required qualification for registration and regulatory requirements in the sector where appropriate in England.

    Who is this qualification for?

    This qualification is for all learners aged 19 and above in England, who are capable of reaching the required standards.

    Edexcels policy is that the qualification should:

    be free from any barriers that restrict access and progression

    ensure equality of opportunity for all wishing to access the qualification.

    What are the benefits of this qualification to the learner and employer?

    This qualification replaces the current Level 4 NVQ in Leadership and Management for Care Services and the Level 4 NVQ in Health and Social Care. It has six pathways three for adults and three for children and young people:

    MANAGEMENT:

    The management pathways (Children and Young Peoples Management and Adults Management) are suitable for assistant managers and deputy managers working in day or domiciliary services who are looking to progress their career. They are also appropriate for managers who have not yet achieved a vocational qualification at this level.

    RESIDENTIAL SERVICES:

    The residential services pathways (Children and Young Peoples Residential Management and Adults Residential Management) are aimed at those in similar job roles as those taking the management pathway but offer a focus on management and care in residential settings.

    ADVANCED PRACTICE:

    The Advanced Practice pathways (Children and Young Peoples Advanced Practice and Adults Advanced Practice) are suitable for senior practitioners who would like to develop their career but wish to remain active practitioners within the management framework.

    The Edexcel Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young Peoples Services (England) (QCF) is a component of the Leadership, Management and Specialist Practice in Adult Social Care (England) Higher Level Apprenticeship. Apprentices must complete Unit 71: Understand Professional Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care or Children and Young Peoples Settings as this is a mandatory requirement of the Higher Level Apprenticeship in England from September 2012. This 6 credit unit forms part of the optional unit bank for this qualification.

    What is the qualification structure for the Edexcel Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young Peoples Services (England) (QCF)?
