    3. Students should take notes and record information on their Study Guide while we arereading. They can continue working on it when we finish reading.

    4. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding.Focus on these questions about citizens:

o (TE 293)What does the government do for citizens rights?o (TE 293)Can a person be a citizen in more than one place?o (TE 293)Which right does each picture on the bulletin board show?o (TE 294)What is one right that citizens have?o (TE 294)Give an example of a responsibility?o (After paragraph 1 on p. 295)How can you be a good citizen?o (Review question #2) Copy this sentence. Fill in the blanks. Citizens of the

United States have ________________ and _________________.

    5. CLOSURE:Discuss the three statements in the Review and Assess sections of TE 295.

Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

Students will write down in their journal three responsibilities and three rights that theyhave as a citizen. They will also write 3-4 sentences on why they think rights and

    responsibilities are important.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.I will know students understand the rights and responsibilities of citizens through their

    journal responses.

Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of the lesson to teach will be about responsibilities. All

children have responsibilities whether they are at school or at home so they should

be familiar with the concept before the lesson is taught.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I think the most challenging part for me to teach will be explaining how the

government protects citizens who are responsible. I think this concept can be hard

for young children to understand because the government isnt seen on a daily

basis, but is more of the law part of what is right and wrong.

    3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? In order to extend the lesson, we will as a class do the Extend Lesson 2 Solving

    problems on p. 296-299.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?I would pull any students that did not grasp the concepts aside and we would

work on the Reteach Mini Lesson described at the bottom of TE 295. We would

work together to make a word web about citizens.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I think the only part of the lesson I would change would be the poster of rights. I

would have students choose five different rights and then I would have about

fifteen pictures that would fit into the rights the students chose. I would then have

students work in groups and sort the pictures into which right category it went in,

kind of like a picture sort.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?I think the hardest part about writing this lesson plan was making the lesson fun

and not too serious. I think children hear the word responsibility or rights and

think negatively about them in some cases. I want my students to feel like this lesson

is fun and gives them an immense amount of knowledge on the rights they have,

    and also the responsibilities.
