Chota Club Meeting March 08, 2012 March Meeting: Michael “Louie” Lewis A Legendary OC-1 Paddler

Webmaster - Russell DeCastongrene Past Pres. - Doug Johnstone

At our club meeting on March 8, we look forward to a great evening with Michael “Louie” Lewis, a legendary figure whose passion is canoeing the steep narrow, technical creeks that flow off the Cumber-land Plateau. As an OC-1 paddler since the 1970’s, Lewis made seven whitewater documen-taries, and claims five first descents and nine open-boats first. Most of theses runs were on creeks in the watershed of Wal-den’s Ridge and on the Tellico River. More recently, he has been running the Green River, NC Michael’s friend, Alex Vargas, which is Associated with Blackfly Canoes will also be at the meeting! The meeting will be held at Dead End BBQ, Knoxville, TN 37919

The last time we made this trip, we had a

group dinner the first night. We'll plan on

doing that again. Other than that, you will

be responsible for all other meals.

We will use Sea Camp as our base and

make day trips as weather and tides allow.

If wind or tides restrict our paddling op-

tions, bicycles are available to rent to tour

the island.

There is a $4 entry fee per person plus an

additional $4/day camping fee totaling

$20. Plus wherever we decide to stay the

night before we paddle over, either hotel

or camping.

We will paddle over from St. Mary’s,

Georgia or Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Please contact Sharon Cogburn to reserve

your place on the trip at one-

[email protected]

Join us as we paddle to beautiful Cumber-

land Island National Park off the southern

coast of Georgia! We will be camping for 4

nights in Sea Camp --paddling over on the

19th and back on the 23rd. It is situated

under a huge canopy of live oaks and

Spanish moss. Bathrooms and cold water

showers are the creature comforts of-

fered. Water is available but can have an

off taste so it would be advisable to bring

your own. Reservations have been made

for 3 sites/ 20 people although each site

will only allow 3 tents per site. With that as

a parameter, we may have to limit the

group size. Once I have a list of everyone

that is interested, we can sort it out.

Since water conditions can be a bit dicey,

it is advisable to be proficient in wet exits

and re-entry. Weather can vary from cold

and wet to sunny and warm. Be prepared

for cold water conditions.

Chota Club Meeting April 12, 2012 In the April meet-ing, a NPS park ranger will present a talk on the Obed River. He will give an overview of the park, including a description of difficulties and highlights of various sections, and give some safety considerations for specific rapids and hazards. Waterfalls/natural arches/vistas will be shown. Please come and join us for a great evening with a talk featuring highlights of this scenic river! The Meeting will be held at Dead End BBQ, Knoxville TN 37919

Conservation

We in Chota enjoy the natural environment in which we practice our sport. We feel strongly that nature should be protected today and for our children. To this end we are active in preservation and restora-tion of natural areas and conservation of our natural resources. We practice this as individuals by doing such things as volunteering for river cleanups and writing letters to government offi-cials. As an organization Chota actively supports many local, state, regional and national conservation organizations with dona-tions and other resources.

Winter Touring

Whitewater paddlers are not the only

boaters having fun in the winter.

Touring paddlers can go all winter in Ten-

nessee with the proper gear and planning.

We have plenty of warm winter days but

the water can still be dangerously cold so

you have to be prepared. First, don't pad-

dle alone, and always wear your PFD.

Having a drysuit is the ultimate piece of

gear for cold water paddling but is not ab-

solutely necessary. Wearing dry tops, dry

pants, wet suits, waterproof gloves and of

course having dry feet is the key to staying

warm and safe. Neoprene socks, wool

socks underneath and tall muckluk pad-

dling boots are the answers to dry feet.

Even if you don't have all the high tech

gear you can still paddle on those warm

winter days. If you paddle in a group and

have practiced self and assisted rescues

you can be safe. Just be prepared with rain

gear and a bailout bag to deal with bad

weather or an accidental dunking . A dry

bag with a complete change of warm

clothes, towel, and hand warmers can give

you the ability to warm up and continue

your paddling day. It is also a good idea to

carry a thermos of hot liquid or even a

camp stove for an emergency warm up.

The best thing about winter paddling is

that you often have the lakes to yourself.

There is very little boat traffic, few people

out on the water and more wildlife than

you usually see in the warmer months. Get

your boat out of storage and go out and

enjoy winter on the lake.

Coming in June!

Chota’s annual Canoe & Kayak School has been a great way to introduce our sport to newcomers for many years. We offer be-ginner classes in whitewa-ter kayak and canoe, as well as touring kayak. For those who are already into paddling, but wish to advance in skill level, our school also offers advanced beginner and intermediate whitewater kayaking classes.

White water equipment is available on first come first serve basis. Touring equip-ment is not owned by the club. Hope you can join us!

1 ft. We figured out our shuttle, got geared up and were off. Forty minutes later we were on the river. And what an awesome run. A fun Class II-III run with lots of play spots for those willing to brave some fish counting time in the cold water, and big wave trains for the big water junk-ies among us. And as usual for a plateau run, the scenery is amazing. After some warm up time and play time we came to Flying V. We're not sure what the real name is but from the pictures you can see that Flying V fits. A glassy, green tongue of water leading into a wave hole. We all came through with flying colors. Thank you for the photos Kemper. We paddled on a ways until we came to "the undercut". Some opted to walk and others decided to run it. Everyone who ran it had a good line and the portage was easy. There were a few more creeky rapids after the undercut and then we hit some bigger water. A lit-tle more surfing, one big boof and we're back at the takeout.

White Water Trip Report

Paddlers: Kemper Begley, Michael Ann Begley, Laura Eddlemon, James T. Locke, Russell deCastongrene, Paul Butler, Angela Garrison I woke up Saturday morning to drizzle and cloudy skies and thought I might just pull the covers over my head and go back to sleep. A text from Michael Ann woke me up with a report that White's Creek was running at 1ft and did I want to go? Well of course I wanted to go. White's Creek runs after a big rain event but it doesn't stick around long. So now I'm wide awake and throwing me gear together to meet Michael Ann, Kemper and Paul by 1pm. When I arrived at the takeout I found our crew had grown. Waiting there for me to show up were the original three plus Laura, James and Russell.

The three of them were on their way to do a different river when Michael Ann got a hold of them and changed their itinerary. Everybody loves White's Creek. To my sur-prise, the river had come up in the time it took me to get there, so it would be bigger water day with the river at 2ft instead of

And that ends another fabulous day on the river. Of course after the river there is usually food. A group vote landed us at a Mexican place in Harriman with cold beer and a salsa bar. Perfect! Angela Garrison

Other areas

that I plan

on addressing

to start the

year are:

1. Up dating the

Chota website- it has

some old data and the

various committee

members are looking

at their areas and de-

leting old information

and adding current

information.

2. Insurance Pro-

gram- reviewing

closely the insurance

requirements we must

comply with and

working to ensure that

trip leaders do not

have any require-

ments placed on them

that would jeopardize

the programs we have

enjoyed all these

years.

3. Special Club

those events that the

club members want

have adequate club

In 1984-1985 I was asked by Ed MacAllis-

ter to join him and Bill Adkins to start up

River Sports on Sutherland Avenue. Ed

originally had the business in his basement

and had bought the property on Suther-

land. We did a lot of tearing out of old

milk truck operations and hung lot of dry

wall during that time. My last trip to Al-

gonquin Provincial Park was approximately

8 years ago with my wife and a college

roommate and his wife. We have been

trying to plan another trip since but build-

ing a new home and work got in the way.

The last two summers I returned to the

Canoe and Kayak School as an assistant

instructor in Sea Kayaking. This is my first

year as an officer in Chota. The Executive

Committee you have selected to support

me is excellent and I look forward to a suc-

cessful year ahead. Many of the areas in

which Chota is involved are new to me so

any help the members can provide to

From the Bow

Welcome to the 2012 Paddling year. As

the new President I thought that I would

provide a short bio of my paddling back-

ground before I talked about this year’s

activities. I started canoeing in Boy Scouts

during summer camp in Ontario, Canada

around 1962. The older scouts went on a

3 day canoe trip using aluminum rental

canoes. The portages were a real chal-

lenge for a young boy. I did not canoe very

much until college when a group of friends

got together and planned an annual canoe

trip in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario.

We continued these trips well past college

including a 210 mile trip down (travel

north) the Abitibi River in northern Ontario

ending in the town of Moosonee on the

southern coast of James Bay. In 1977 I

started marathon canoe racing in the

United States Canoe Association.

I did this for about 20 years during which

time I served as Treasurer for about 6

years and President for 4 years as well as

Camping Chairman. I sponsored a USCA/

World’s Fair sanctioned marathon race for

the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville. Those

of you who remember the 1982 World’s

Fair know that one of the unique aspects

of the World’s Fair was that they had sanc-

tioned sports events. We held the race at

the Marina in Oak Ridge on the Clinch

River and had 5 Voyageur Brigades who

put on the opening ceremony for the

event. I joined Chota in about 1981-1982

and attended my first Canoe School in

1983. Doug Johnstone was my instructor

in Intermediate C-1 Whitewater. I paddled

several trips with the club and attended

Canoe School again in the 90s. During this

time I did get the privilege of borrowing

Blue Hole #13 from Ann Phillips and pad-

dled it on the Nantahala River (a Chota trip

ensure a successful year of paddling is wel-

come. The big event of the year for the

club is Canoe and Kayak School. As in all

volunteer organizations, the support we

receive from all members is critical to a

successful weekend in Reliance, TN. One of

the areas we plan on emphasizing this year

is the marketing efforts to publicize the

school using our volunteer members as

well as available public forums.

Trip Rules

These trips are scheduled for Chota members, but ETWC members are welcome too! To join the club, please print the membership form from the website and send it to the given address along with the annual fee. You may also give it to the trip leader on the day of the trip. You must contact the trip coordinator by the Wednesday before the trip if you want to attend. The trip coordinator has sole discretion when evalu-ating skill levels for the in-tended trip. All trips are water level de-pendent. Trips may be can-celled or changed due to lack of water or too much water. The skill level of the group will be considered when choosing sections and appropriate water levels. These are not beginner trips unless marked with a (B). These are winter paddling trips. Appropriate clothing and gear is required. If you are not sure if your gear is adequate, ask the trip coordinator. You will not be permitted to paddle in shorts and a dry top no matter how far you drove to get to the river!!!!

Club Equipment Club boats and gear is available to Chota members at no charge. However, equipment that is not returned by the TUESDAY following the trip will be sub-jected to a $20 late fee. This is to ensure that all club members have fair access to the gear. If you are interested in using club equipment, please contact Mary Ann Grell at 865-207-6250

Cumberland Island Sea Kayak Touring Trip

March 18-24, 2012 Join us as we paddle to beautiful Cumberland Is-

land National Park off the southern coast of Geor-

gia! We will be camping for 4 nights in Sea Camp -

-paddling over on the 19th and back on the 23rd. It

is situated under a huge canopy of live oaks and

Spanish moss. Bathrooms and cold water showers

are the creature comforts offered. Water is available

but can have an off taste so would be advisable to

bring your own. Reservations have been made for 3

sites/ 20 people although each site will only allow 3

tents per site. With that as a parameter, we may

have to limit the group size. Once I have a list of

everyone that is interested, we can sort it out.

Since water conditions can be a bit dicey, it is ad-

visable to be proficient in wet exits and re-entry.

Weather can vary from cold and wet to sunny and

warm. Be prepared for cold water conditions.

The last time we made this trip, we had a group din-

ner the first night. We'll plan on doing that again.

Other than that, you will be responsible for all other

meals.

We will use Sea Camp as our base and make day

trips as weather and tides allow. If wind or tides

restrict our paddling options, bicycles are available

to rent to tour the island.

There is a $4 entry fee per person plus an additional

$4/day camping fee totaling $20. Plus wherever we

decide to stay the night before we paddle over, ei-

ther hotel or camping.

We will paddle over from St. Mary’s, Georgia or

Fernandina Beach, Florida.

place on the trip at [email protected]
