    Ecosystem Function Test Corrections

1(dii) State two factors that limit the primary productivity of such ecosystems

Factors that limit the primary productivity of deserts are low rainfall and high temperature.

2(aiii) Outline and evaluate a method to measure one of the selected abiotic factors

A method to measure light intensity would be to use a light meter. In order to properly do this,

you would hold the meter at the surface of the sol and loin the meter in the direction with the strongest

light intensity. Do this multiple times to ensure the results are accurate and consistent.. This would be

a good method to use because it is easy to do with the help of an instrument. A problem you may

encounter by using this method is not measuring the light intensity of the light at the same

    direction/angle each trial.

2b) Name an organism found in the ecosystem specified above. Describe and evaluate a

method for estimating its abundanceTrees are found within tropical rainforest to estimate abundance of trees you can use the

quadrate method. To do this you pick random sections of a chosen area to collect data then you use a

population index formula. Make sure you redo this process several times to ensure the data collected

is accurate and consistent. This method would be good to use because it is collecting data throughout

an area in various parts which would be more accurate to represent the area as a whole rather than

one small section of it. A mistake that may be encountered while using this method would be

calculation errors while using the population index formula.

    3) For a named consumer organism shown in the diagram above, describe and evaluate a

method for measuring its gross and net secondary productivity

4c) State and explain the changes in the total biomass in the graph

4f) Determine the total plant biomass 200 years after the retreat of the glacier

The net primary productivity of an ecosystem is different in each biome. In Tropical rain forests,

the net primary productivity falls over 2000 gm-2/yr-2. In deserts, the net primary productivity falls

under 500gm-2/yr-2. These two biomes are very different which causes the net primary productivitys

to be so different. The tropical rainforest has a very diverse and complex population. There are many

different plant species and the abiotic factors such as hot, humid climate and high amounts of

precipitation, cause the net primary productivity to be at a high rate. Deserts have a very dry and hot

climate which is a reason for its low net primary productivity.

A factors that influence productivity are the quality of soil in an ecosystem. When the soil is

fertile and has high quality, more productivity takes place. Temperature is also another factor that can

effect the productivity of a biome. Biomes that have extremely cold or extremely hot temperatures,

often have low productivity rates because the extreme temperature conditions have an impact on

species within the biome. When a biome has moderate temperatures, the productivity is high.
