The Educational Collaborative on Sustainable Environmental and Agricultural Management

ECOSEAM

ECOSEAM is an educational collaborative on sustainable environmental and agricultural management between Michigan State University, Purdue University, Ohio State University and Central State University. This slide show will give an overview of the ECOSEAM program and each of its courses.1Moderated web-based self-study

Technical courses in agricultural and watershed engineering

Knowledge and practical experience through class and professional mentoringOverview of ECOSEAM

ECOSEAM is a unique web-based self-study program offering technical courses in the area of agricultural and watershed engineering. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience through class and professional mentoring preparing students for public policy, land use management and environmental engineering.2Instructors:Dr. Lingying ZhoaOhio State University

Prerequisites:Junior in Engineering or aboveOr Food, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences Majors

Credits: 4

Agricultural Air Quality Engineering

Agricultural Air Quality Engineering will cover fundamentals of air quality within and from animal production facilities, assessment of indoor air quality and air emissions, and evaluation of air emission impacts on neighboring communities. The selection and design of air pollution control options will also be discussed. This course is taught by Dr. Zhoa of Ohio State University3Instructors:Dr. Harold Keener, Jon Rausch P.E.Ohio State University

Prerequisites:Junior in Engineering or aGraduate StudentOr by permission of professor

Environmental Management Options for Animal Agriculture

Environmental Management Options for Animal Agriculture will focus on high priority manure management issues. Students will develop and design a manure handling and storage system for modern food animal operation. Included is a visit to an existing manure handling facility. This course is taught by Dr. Keener and Jon Rausch of Ohio State University.4Instructors:Dr. William Northcott, Steve Miller P.E.Michigan State University

Prerequisites:Hydrology and HydraulicsMajor Water Quality IssuesShow competency through examination

Suburban/Rural Watershed Interface Modeling

Students of Suburban/Rural Watershed Interface Modeling will use watershed scale water quantity and quality models at the suburban/rural interface to evaluate the impacts of changes in land use management practices. They will also design best management practices to address stream water quality and quantity problems. This course is taught by Dr. Northcott and Steve Miller, both of Michigan State University.5Instructors:Larry Stephens P.E., Dr. Ted LoudonMichigan State University

Prerequisites:Microbiology or BiochemistryFluid MechanicsFundamentals of Soil Science

Credits: 4Design and Management of Decentralized Wastewater Systems

In Design and Management of Decentralized Wastewater Systems, students will learn the concepts and methods of site evaluation, matching sites with various technologies, and be introduced to design tools and methods for various on-lot and cluster wastewater systems. Students will also learn how the role of decentralized wastewater treatment systems relates to sustainable wastewater management infrastructure of the future. This course is taught by Dr. Ted Loudon of Michigan State University and Larry Stephens of Stephens Consulting Services.6Luke ReeseRecruiting and Marketing223 Farrall HallEast Lansing, MI [email protected]
