INTERVENTIONS TO ENSURING FOOD SECURITY IN GHANA.OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the presentation the student will be able to:

What are the pillars or dimensions for food security?

• Food security can be based on three (3) main pillars or dimensions. These are:
FOOD AVAILABILITYFOOD ACCESSIBILITY
FOOD UTILIZATION /USAGE
The various interventions taken by the Ghana government to ensuring food security in the
country. These are:1.Youth in agriculture program (YIAP)
2. Agricultural mechanization 3. National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO)
4. African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable
Development (AMESD)5. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
6. Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA)
BODYWhat is the Ghanaian government doing to improve
food security?

AGRICULTURAL MECHANIZATION. It is government of Ghana’ initiative.
The agricultural mechanization services enterprise centers (AMSEC) was established to offer tractor to farmers to hire all over the country for land preparation services such as
ploughing.
YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE PROGRAMME (YIAP). It is government of Ghana’ initiative.
It was first conceived by the late president of Ghana,
Professor Evans John Atta Mills from 1996 to 2000.
It is to motivate the youth to accept and appreciate farming as a
commercial venture, thereby taking up farming as a life-time
vocation to ensure food security.
the government of ghana has been providing subsidized agricultural machines to individual farmers and private enterprise since 2007.

African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD)
Some functions of NAFCO includes: To provide window to farmers to produce in large
quantities

NAFCO over the years has boosted food stock through:
Stabilizing Food Grain Supply and Price.Ensuring Emergency Food Reserve.
Therefore, NAFCO food reserves could be used as an emergency food relief.
National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO)
It is a government institution that buys excess products from farmers, stores it, distribute and
even sell it at affordable prices during shortage of products.

CONCLUSION
Problems of implementation of policies are:
Poor road network.
Inadequate information (database) on farmers.

The policies concerning the improvement of food security should
be a legal mandatory tool to every government in their tenure of
office.
