The 13 Colonies

The “original 13 colonies” were settled mostly by the English

Separated into 3 distinct regions:

New England

Middle

Southern

Divided by geographical, cultural and economic reasons

New England colonies

States that were

Connecticut

New Hampshire

Masachussetts

Rhode Island

(Take this time to color and label these states now)

New England Economy

These states are far north, so the growing season was short and the land was rocky not great farming

Any farming was subsistence farming

Main industries were fishing, timber, and shipbuilding

The industries led to small towns

Middle Colonies

Included the states of

New Jersey

Pennsylvania

New York

Delaware

(Fill these in!)

Middle Colonies Economy

The land was fertile (had good soil) which was used for agriculture

It was known as the “breadbasket” because it provided a lot of grain

Also industrial economy with large cities that produced iron, paper, and cloth

Southern Colonies

Included the states of

Virginia

South Carolina

North Carolina

Maryland

Georgia

(Fill these in!)

Southern Colonies Economy

Used plantations (large farm that raises cash crops) to grow tobacco, cotton, indigo (plant that produced blue dye)

-cash crops (crop that is raised to be sold for money rather than to eat)

Year round growing season

Needed a large labor force to farm on a large scale

Think, pair, share…predictions!

Which colony is most likely to use slaves?

Which colony probably had to import most of it’s food?

Which colony(s) had the largest cities?

Game…

I will give you a statement. You will go to the appropriate corner of the room that has the colony SILENTLY.

You have 5 seconds to think about it, then you will have 5 seconds to get to the appropriate spot in the room.

If you talk or are shoving, then you have to sit out and write answers on the whiteboard.

Questions on directions? Who can repeat?

Postcards

You are writing and drawing three separate postcards to a friend: one from the New England colonies, another from the Middle colonies, and a third from the Southern colonies

Write about the different economies in each region, and why they have different economies

Draw a picture using the colored pencils on the back of the postcard
