5 Building on yesterday’s Wallonia to create the Wallonia of tomorrow

Site 1. "Etablissements Ortmans" in Verviers

Before: The activities of a former wool merchant followed by those of a warehouse for the

storage of electrical and photographic equipment caused major soil pollution in cyclic

hydrocarbons including benzene and mineral oil, while the waters were contaminated by

cadmium, zinc and mineral oil.

After: Vocational training center - le Polygone de l’Eau, a partnership between FOREM Training

and the water company, SWDE.

Surface area: 1.6 hectare

Site 2. "Usine à Gaz" in Mons

Before: Two gas holders were built before World War I, which caused soil pollution in cyclic

hydrocarbons, heavy metals and mineral oil, with waters contaminated by benzene, heavy

metals and cyanide.
