Foreword

Dear participants,

For almost 30 years now, RSA Conference in San Francisco has been the world’s leading cybersecurity conference. So it’s a pleasure for me to lead this promising delegation.

RSA Conference 2019 attracted over 42,000 attendees. With more than 740 speakers and 700 exhibitors, this year’s conference is an excellent platform for promoting Dutch expertise in the areas of smart and secure infrastructures, Internet of Things security, and privacy.

The conference’s setting also offers businesses a wealth of opportunities. Silicon Valley – with its access to prestigious research institutions like Stanford and Berkeley – is a household name in the world of cybersecurity and the birthplace of many successful tech companies.

What’s more, the US is not only the world’s largest economy, but also the Netherlands’ main trading partner outside the EU. Over 800,000 US jobs are the result of Dutch companies operating or investing in the US. The Dutch pavilion at RSA and your participation in the conference will further enhance this strong transatlantic relationship.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘the human element of cybersecurity’, making it an opportunity to showcase Dutch businesses’ innovative strength and trade potential. We are also highlighting the Netherlands’ role as a leading player in cybersecurity, particularly with a view to the human aspects. In a world where cyberthreats are increasing, the Kingdom of the Netherlands advocates a rational and responsible cybersecurity industry, where ethical questions, privacy issues and user-friendliness are taken seriously.

I wish everyone a successful mission!

Foreword

Welcome to Silicon Valley. I’m honored to host the Dutch cybersecurity businesses and organizations participating in this year’s RSA Conference in San Francisco.

This year marks the first year that the Netherlands will have a pavilion at RSA. The Netherlands is a digitalized country, so it’s no surprise that cybersecurity is ingrained in our policies to enhance security and stimulate economic growth. A few examples include cybersecurity on the internet of things, smart and secure infrastructures, tackling cybercrime, and fighting organized crime.

The Netherlands believes that the internet and its underlying infrastructure should be secure, resilient, and available. To create solutions for these security challenges, government, businesses, and universities work together on an integrated approach and outcome.

The Netherlands and the United States have been partners for more than 400 years. They share a deep bond founded on history and shared values rooted in strong beliefs of security, freedom, and justice. Cybersecurity is the next frontier. You all contribute to a continuing partnership between our two countries on these topics.

In 2020, the Netherlands celebrates 75 years of freedom after World War II, so it is even more important today to value and maintain our freedom. Cybersecurity is one way to maintain our freedom, but it also poses challenges to our privacy and individual freedoms. These are interesting topics to talk about.

I look forward meeting you and learning more about your work, business, and ideas.Kind regards,

Gerbert KunstConsul General of the Netherlands

Introducing the Netherlands

How do the Dutch make a difference? Through their interactive approach to finding innovative solutions to the big challenges facing the world today. The Dutch way of thinking and working has been shaped by centuries of living in the low-lying delta of the Netherlands. Through the ages, the Dutch have joined forces to find ingenious ways to tackle challenges like water, urban-isation, energy, food, health and security. By being inventive, pragmatic and open to new challenges, the Dutch have created a flourishing and resilient land.

The Netherlands is a constantly evolving ecosystem of cities, industry, agriculture and nature, all integrated through smart infrastructure. It is a source of knowledge and experience that the Dutch are keen to share with others. Learning from the past to create a better future. Together, seeking sustainable solutions for the most liveable world.

Guardian360Guardian360 believes it’s unfair that companies worldwide can’t use their IT assets without being afraid of being hacked or being exposed to other IT security related threats.

In our vision the gap between the amount of staff needed to perform security tasks and the amount of staff requested will increase rapidly in the next couple of years. That’s why we believe in automation and partnering with IT Service providers. By empowering system administrators and engineers to perform security tasks, the skill gap becomes smaller. Also, we’re absolutely convinced that security must be looked at as a process instead of a product or point solution. That’s why all our offerings are based on continuous delivery of services and monthly subscriptions.

Guardian360 LighthouseThe Guardian360 Lighthouse platform offers services to: • Prevent security incidents from happening, • Detect security issues quickly to lower the damage,• Solve issues so business continuity is being assured.

Municipality of The HagueIn The Hague, The Netherlands, talented people work together on innovations for a more secure world.

The Hague, the third largest city in The Netherlands, is considered the International City of Peace & Justice and attracts international organizations, talent and innovators that want to make a difference.

The Municipality of The Hague actively works on stimulating innovation and (international) collaboration in the field of cybersecurity.

This has led to the development of The Hague as an important hub for cybersecurity in Europe and a flourishing cluster around security and new technology called The Hague Security Delta (HSD).

The cluster has a strong foundation in The Hague region, due to the presence of Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre, NATO Communications and Information Agency and the Dutch cybersecurity, intelligence and security agencies.

Amongst others the cluster facilitates the soft-landing of international organizations, talent and innovators in the Dutch security ecosystem.

Radically Open SecurityRadically Open Security is the world’s first not-for-profit computer security consultancy. We operate under an innovative new business model whereby we use a Dutch fiscal entity, called a “Fiscal Fund raising Institution”, as a commercial front-end to send 90% of our profits, tax-free, to a not-for-profit foundation, Stichting NLnet. The NLnet Foundation has supported open-source, digital rights, and Internet research for almost 20 years.

In contrast to other organizations, our profits do not benefit shareholders, investors, or founders. Our profits benefit society. As an organization without a profit-motive, we recruit top-name, ethical security experts and find like-minded customers that want to use their IT security budget as a “vote” to support socially responsible entrepreneurship. The rapid pace of our growth reflects the positive response the market has to our idealistic philosophy and innovative business model.

Radically Open Security has left an indelible mark on the security industry of the Netherlands. We have spurred a public discourse about the ethics of computer security consultancy. Our competitors have also moved towards more openness and transparency – because customers are increasingly demanding it. (Now that there is a “fair trade” commercial alternative on the market.) Our success has been further validated by the prizes we have won: the Dutch Chamber of Commerce ranked Radically Open Security as the 50th Most Innovative SME in the Netherlands. CIO Magazine called Melanie Rieback the “Most Innovative IT Leader” of the Netherlands and Rieback was named one of the 9 Most Innovative Women in the European Union (EU Women Innovators Prize) in 2019.

TNOTNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way. With over 3,200 professionals at TNO, we work in collaboration with partners and focus on nine domains. One of the cross cutting themes is cybersecurity.

TNO and CFLOW Cyber Strategies will organise the 1st IoT Security Dialogue during the RSA Conference 2020 in San Francisco

SynopsisIoT Security is one of the major challenges of the new decade. Whether we consider the privacy and security risk of individual devices or the risk of massive cyber-attacks exploiting the limited resources to large numbers of IoT devices. New solutions are required to be adopted and implemented at-large. At the same time the full solution is not clear. Can we approach every IoT device with the same solution or does every sector or every device require specific security solutions. The first IoT Security Dialogue envisions to discuss about tangible solutions and answer the question whether these are generic or sector specific.
