THE 2013 ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY
REGIONAL IMPACT
EVERY UNIVERSITY HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE LIVES and transform the community to which it belongs. Each has its own set of
strengths, specializations and comparative advantages that it offers not
only its student body, but also the area it serves.
In 2013, Texas Southern University utilized a nationally recognized input-
output model to determine the financial benefits the Houston Metropolitan
region gains from having Texas Southern University in its own backyard.
The survey took a close look at the University’s impact on eight counties:
Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery
and Waller. The results also revealed the non-financial advantages of
having Texas Southern in the Houston Metropolitan area.
The results were clear: Texas Southern not only provides a quality educa-
tion and collegiate experience for the population it serves, it also offers a
wide variety of services that enhance the attractiveness of the region to
both individuals and businesses alike.

THE REALITY: across the country, 78% of students earn a
diploma within four years of starting high school.* For African
Americans, that number is 64 percent. Of that group, only
10.2% of African American high school graduates go on to
earn a college degree. Among African American males, the
odds of obtaining a college degree are less likely. Only 38% of
African Americans in Texas colleges are male, while 62% are
female. This is the greatest gender-based educational gap of
any ethnic group. But despite the odds, TSU has a significant
impact on making sure that African Americans in Texas gradu-
ate from college. The University enrolls approximately 18% of
Houston-area African American high school graduates.
THE PERCENTAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICANS IN HOUSTON WITH BACHELOR’S DEGREES NEARLY DOUBLED BETWEEN 1980 AND 2010.
TEXAS SOUTHERN RANKED 4TH NATIONALLY FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS RECEIVING DOCTORAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEGREES. IN 2010-2011, TSU HAD 125 AFRICAN AMERICAN DOCTORAL GRADUATES, WHICH WAS 46% OF THE TOTAL GRADUATING CLASS.

TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY IS CHANGING THE FACE OF HOUSTON’S WORKFORCE by providing a number of unique degree programs for Houston and
the region, which include online degree programs that allow working professionals
to advance their careers. And with an eye on the future, the College of Science and
Technology is preparing the next generation of leaders in science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) by introducing students to STEM careers.
Texas Southern makes a significant impact on the Houston Metropolitan region through
its alumni. More than 68,000 TSU alumni were identified for this survey. Of that group,
47,000 of these alumni live and work in the Houston area. Their presence is felt far and
wide: from small business owners to corporate CEOs, TSU alumni have a profound
impact on the City of Houston and beyond.
