Organic Agriculture
“Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.” IFOAM
What are organic foods?Organic produce or products are reared and processed through a system that encourages biological natural processes on the farm, allows farm animals to exhibit natural behavior and excludes the use of synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, antibiotics and genetically modified organisms.
Why Organic Food?“Organic food is good for: your health, our environment and for future generations”Organic food is safe. It does not contain poisonous chemical residues that result from spraying of farm produce with toxic synthetic pesticides and application of chemical fertilizers in conventional farms.
Organic food is healthy. It contains more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other nutrients which are not found in conventional food. This improves the fertility of both animals and human beings. Organic therefore means a healthy community.
Organic food is tastier. Organic fruits and vegetables are full of juice and natural flavors and are more nutritious. Organic foods undergo a verification system that guarantees the intrinsic quality of the products. When farmers comply with organic standards, the quality of products is guaranteed.
Organic excludes Genetic Engineering (GE) and Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs), which have been found to be toxic to human beings.
About the Ecological Organic DirectoryThe Ecological Organic Directory enlists practitioners of Ecological Organic Agriculture in Kenya. It has been consolidated by Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN), the Country Lead Organization (CLO) of the Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative (EOAI), a continental project supported by the Swiss Development Cooperation, (SDC) and Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, (SSNC).
This directory is designed to enable sharing of information and increasing interaction of Ecological Organic Agriculture stakeholders in Kenya. It will also be a resource material that will enhance more networking amongst EOA actors, and a useful guide to know who is doing what in Kenya. The information contained herein is from the actors and their networks and it is envisaged that it will be regularly updated.

ABOUT KOAN
Kenya Organic Agriculture Network is a National non-governmental not-for-profit membership organization.
KOAN’s VisionA vibrant organic agriculture industry that contributes to a healthy environment, livelihood improvement, food security and is responsive to a growing consumer market.
KOAN’S MissionTo coordinate, facilitate and provide leadership and professional services to all members and other stakeholders in the organic agriculture sector.
KOAN’s GoalTo develop key competencies, skills and strategies in the areas of organic agriculture production, marketing, certification and standards, training, extension and information, networking, policy and advocacy.
What we do· Facilitate provision of technical advisory services in the areas of
production, training, certification and marketing.
· Coordinate organic certification and inspection services acceptable at both the national and international levels.
· Coordinate, harmonize and facilitate unified training programmes in organic agriculture in Kenya.
· Create public awareness on the benefits of organic agriculture.
· Document, validate, and disseminate key research findings in organic agriculture.
· Facilitate access to organic markets and coordinate the establishment of viable organic businesses.
· Lobby and participate in the formulation and implementation of pro-organic agriculture policies.

ECOLOGICAL ORGANIC AGRICULTURE INITIATIVE (EOAI)EOA is a continental project whose overall goal is to mainstream EOA into national agricultural production systems, policies, and practices by 2025 in order to improve agricultural productivity, food security, access to markets and sustainable development in Africa.
Vision: Vibrant Ecological Organic Systems for Enhanced Food Security and Sustainable Development in Africa.
Mission: To promote ecologically sound strategies and practices among diverse stakeholders in production, processing, and marketing through strategic actions and policy making to alleviate poverty, guarantee adequate and healthy food security, improve livelihoods and safeguard the environment.
OBJECTIVES
• To increase documentation of information and knowledge on organic agricultural products along the complete value chain and support relevant actors to translate it into practices and wide application.
• To systematically inform producers about the EOA approaches and good practices and motivate their uptake through strengthening access to advisory and support services.
• To substantially increase the share of quality organic products at the local, national and regional markets.
• Strengthen inclusive stakeholder engagement in organic commodities value chain development by establishing national, regional and continental multi-stakeholder platforms to advocate for changes in public policy, plans, programs, and practices.

STRATEGIC FOCUS/PILLARS OF EOAI1. Research, Training and Extension: Understanding research and training
gaps within EOA value chains and undertaking activities to fill them.
2. Information and Communication: Creating awareness and strengthening EOA extension support systems through diverse information and communication strategies, products and technologies
3. Value Chain and Market Development: Stimulating development of sustainable markets and increase trade in traditional and high value agricultural produce both at domestic and export levels within EOA.
4. Networking and Partnerships: Promoting engagement by relevant stakeholders including governments, farmers, civil society, private sector, and the international community.
5. Policy and Programme Development: Supporting the development and implementation of enabling policies and programmes.
6. Institutional Capacity Development: Supporting and equipping professionals with skills and competences to promote EOA in Africa.
