Golden Valley School is the only English School in the eastern part of Abitibi-Témiscamingue Region of Quebec. Golden Valley School offered academic programs from Kindergarten to Secondary 5.

Golden Valley School First Nations population is made up of Cree, Algonquin and Inuit peoples.

For 80% of Golden Valley School students families, English is not the predominant language at home; it is one of French, Cree, Algonquin or Inuktitut.

It is important to note that for many of our First Nations students English or French is a third language.

1997 Golden Valley School was formed with the

amalgamation of the English Catholic and Protestant schools.

Golden Valley School Population: 390 90%: French mother tongue Students.

2001 Golden Valley School has been identified as

a“défavorisée“ school. This classification entitles the school to a five-year special funding program.

Golden Valley School Population: 315 90%: French mother tongue Students. 5%: First Nations Students.

2004 Golden Valley School population increased

significantly because of the creation of two Bachelor Program for First Nations communities by UQAT in Val-d’Or.

Golden Valley School population: 399 75%: French mother tongue Students. 20%: First Nations Students.

2006 Golden Valley School apply and obtain funds

from the MELS Native Students Grant (30108B Measure).

Golden Valley School population: 409 60%: French mother tongue Students. 40%: First Nations Students.

2007 In may 2007, the school administration was

advised that the MELS would continue funding the special program for another 3 years.

Golden Valley School population: 375 60%: French mother tongue Students. 40%: First Nations Students.

2008 In February, it was announced that Golden

Valley School would receive almost $1.8 million for construction of 2 new Science and Technology labs and 4 classrooms. Construction was completed in January 2009.

Collaboration between the School and the Community The community very generously makes donations of

items to support raising events. Golden Valley School developed positive and

productive relationships with the local CLSC, YPC, Native Friendship Center, SQ, and participate on local community youth committees.
