• Eco-Villages in Europe – about 2,000. Number increased x 10 in last 3 years

• Pan European Community-Led action for Sustainable Europe (ECOLISE) programme. Partners in 20 countries in Europe

Eco-Village Programme

in Tanzania.

• Tanzania nominated by EU one of 4 pilot countries for trying out Climate Change Mitigation/Adaptation projects

• € 2.4million allocated in 2010

• Holistic Eco-Village concept designed. Multiple innovations

• Choice of 3 pilot projects in 3 different, fragile, environments: arid dryland, montane forest, coasts: Chololo, Morogoro and Pembe. Started Dec 2011

• After major successes in 18 months, additional budget of € 8 million agreed in 2013 to finance new Eco-Villages. New Eco-Villages to be nominated in December 2014.

• Chololo selected by Gates Foundation as success story

• In the meantime, 2 Billion people live in deep poverty

• Rural communities – without access to education, infrastructure, energy, clean water are particularly vulnerable

• An Eco-Village approach – holistic, empowering, appropriate scale, de-centralised, innovative is the best solution !
