development in Tanzania
Tim ClarkeWorld Summit on Eco-Villages Dakar, Senegal December 2014
Eco-Villages –the solution?
• Holistic vision: shared Values and Principles
• Community empowered
• Real sustainable management
• Appropriate technology
• Capacity-building
• Self-respect and esteem
• Anti-poverty focus
Eco Villages –
Europe? Africa? Global?
• Wolof proverb:
‘Milk and honey have different colours but they share the same house’
• Eco-Villages in Europe – about 2,000. Number increased x 10 in last 3 years
• Pan European Community-Led action for Sustainable Europe (ECOLISE) programme. Partners in 20 countries in Europe
Eco-Village Programme
in Tanzania.
• Tanzania nominated by EU one of 4 pilot countries for trying out Climate Change Mitigation/Adaptation projects
• € 2.4million allocated in 2010
• Holistic Eco-Village concept designed. Multiple innovations
• Choice of 3 pilot projects in 3 different, fragile, environments: arid dryland, montane forest, coasts: Chololo, Morogoro and Pembe. Started Dec 2011
• After major successes in 18 months, additional budget of € 8 million agreed in 2013 to finance new Eco-Villages. New Eco-Villages to be nominated in December 2014.
• Chololo selected by Gates Foundation as success story
The future
• Global issues of sustainable development and climate change should dominate the international agenda in 2015
• But, unlikely to come up with earth-shattering ‘solutions’
• In the meantime, 2 Billion people live in deep poverty
• Rural communities – without access to education, infrastructure, energy, clean water are particularly vulnerable
• An Eco-Village approach – holistic, empowering, appropriate scale, de-centralised, innovative is the best solution !
• GEN’s World Summit can provide real leadership
