hello Autumn 2014 We are very pleased to welcome Wendy Marinos as the new Cluster Manager for ECLP. Wendy, who introduces herself below, will be responsible for leading and supporting the team and providing strategic direction for the ECLP Programme. I am delighted to have joined the ECLP Communities First Team on 18th August 2014. I am the new Cluster Manager, which means I am responsible for delivering the Welsh Government’s Communities First programme in St Mellons, Trowbridge, Llanrumney, Rumney, Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn. Before I joined the ECLP Team, I worked for Warm Wales as a project manager, developing energy efficiency improvement programmes for Welsh households - a job I thoroughly enjoyed. Previously I had worked for EAGA, delivering the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme in Wales and for Energywatch, the gas and electricity consumer watchdog. I also spent some time at the Stroke Association, delivering community based services to stroke survivors and their families. Having previously worked in the private sector, I felt it was time to use my skills to support the community and make a real difference to people’s lives. The Cluster Manager job has given me the opportunity to add real value and deliver the community based services the residents of ECLP want and which help them improve all aspects of their lives. On a personal note, I love to travel, often trying to replicate the dishes I sampled abroad back at home. But as I have never really been an avid cook, my dishes end up more as disasters than meals! In addition to my love for travel, I enjoy spending time with the family and watching movies as well as pottering in the garden. I believe that ECLP Communities First can make a real and lasting impact in the communities we serve. Using the skills of our staff, the support of our partners and by building on the involvement of key community members we can ensure everyone who needs our support gets it. In the meantime we will continue our work through developing and promoting educational and activity based learning opportunities, as well as through social events. But I am keen to hear your views on our project and I very much look forward to getting out and about as much as possible and meeting you to hear first-hand how we can work together to make the communities as prosperous and healthy as they can be. If you would like to talk to me about the ECLP Communities First project, I can be contacted by email [email protected] or by phone on 02920 792004. I am delighted to have joined the ECLPCommunities First Team on 18th August 2014. I am the new Cluster Manager, which means I am responsible for delivering the WelshGovernment’s Communities First programme in St Mellons, Trowbridge, Llanrumney, Rumney,Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn.

HEALTH

If you’re looking for ways to improve your health, you can contact Helen by email [email protected] or by phone/text 07969185037.

What the Health Team can do for you!The Health team can arrange an assortment of free workshops to take place in communitycenters near you, as long as we have around ten expressions of interest. If you would you be interested in:

• Stress management or mental health awareness• Zumba or kangoo • http://zumbasouthwales.com/kangoo-jumps/ • Alcohol awareness /mocktail making• Healthy cookery/ nutrition skills workshop• Baby first aid• Health checks • One-to-one lifestyle checks through a

digital questionnaire called ‘Add to Your Life’.

On 30th June Helen Green, our Health Services Officer, did a Level One nutrition skills course alongside a

group of Community First Health Team volunteers. This is what she thought about the course: “This course made me rethink what I thought I knew about food! We looked at the major food groups and went right back to basics about what nutrients each had, or lacked, in some cases! Because of all the mixed-messages we get about food, it was refreshing to think of foods in terms of what they consist of and what our bodies need them for. Fad diets come and go but what we want to promote is a healthy lifestyle.

This means thinking about things as a whole by looking at other factors too, like how much

we drink and how active we are.” If you want to make a long term change, you

can get involved with our healthy lifestyles projects. Some quick actions can be joining your local food

co-op for affordable fruit and vegetables, signing up for our pedometer challenge or putting your name down to

attend our nutrition skills courses.

After launching Wales Pedometre Challenge in the

ECLP area over six weeks ago, with

help from some of our friends in the community, we have been very busy! Everywhere we went we found lots of people who were very willing to sign up to the Challenge. The idea was not to get people competing with each other, but challenging themselves to increase the amount of steps they did each day (10,000 is the recommended daily amount), which can have great health benefits.

After over a month of step counting and hundreds of texts, the ECLP Pedometer Challenge is now over for the summer! We are really pleased with how keen the people of ECLP have been to get involved and take part. As a result of their participation, people have on average increased their daily number of steps by 2000!

Don’t forget, just because the challenge is finished, it doesn’t mean you can’t continue to wear your pedometer and you can still take part online at: http://www.walespedometerr-challenge.org.uk/. Just by being aware of your step count you’re likely to do that little bit more!

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The Trowbridge Community Festival that was held on August 8th, organised in partnership with CCHA and the Lift project, was a great success. Over 300

local residents came in to take part in the free, festival related

activities that were put on. While they were there, they also had the chance to speak to CCHA’s money advice team, ECLP staff, local PSCO’s and other support providers. To see pictures of the day you can go to: http://goo.gl/qmEBIY

Community Champions are people who want to make a difference in their local area through working with us and their neighbours. Champions help spread information about community events and activities and help their friends and neighbours access the support and services that are available to them.

Our First Community Champion, Rhian Gregory has said that she has joined up because: ‘I believe that we should work together as a community and get back that community spirit. I decided to get in touch and give it a go. You can do as little or as much as you want to help!’

Circus Fun Day

ECLP Newsletter

Autumn 2014 5

ECLP Communities First, in partnership with ACE Cardiff , organised a Circus themed fun day for local children and their parents at the Llanrumney Youth Centre. The centre was transformed in a circus for the day, with wall hangings to create the feeling of a ‘big-top’ circus tent!

The centre was also full of circus themed games and stalls for everyone to take part in, including hook a duck, hula hooping, plate spinning, a coconut shy competition and juggling. More traditional activities were also available for families to get stuck into, including arts and crafts, face-painting and a bouncy castle. Everyone who attended, over 75 children and adults, got involved with most of the activities with many staying for the full 3 hours!

You can see some photographs of the event on our Facebook page here: http://goo.gl/w3EHjW

The day was organised to advertise the East Active Club that provides activity-based learning for the children of East Cardiff in a more informal environment than the school room and to engage with the parents. Currently the East Active Club runs in the Llanrumney Youth Centre every Tuesday, 4pm-6pm and in the Rumney Youth Club on Thursdays, 4pm -6pm

contact Ú If you or your child would like to join the East Active club, send an email to Sophie Gwyther at sophie@acecardiff .org.uk or give us a call on 02920 471241.
