2014 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

We are proud to announce the 2014 ECHS Archiving Scholarship recipients: Joshua Ko, Diego Murillo, and Nai Saeyang. These outstanding students were recognized at Senior Awards Night on June 3, 2014.The presentation was delivered by Gregg Mayer, Class of '73. Each student will receive $1,000.00 Joshua Ko will be attending CAL; Diego Murillo was accepted to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and NaiSaeyang is going to Mills College. For the past nine years, dedicated committee members have found themselves with a difficult challengeto review, interview, and select only three students from each graduating class. Thank you to Howard Mackey '44, Kathie Weinstein '58, Parent Alumnus '82, '87, Roddy Lee '67, ParentAlumnus '97, '00, Jackie Fonken, '56, Gregg Mayer '73, Bobbi Griggs '72, Lu Tipping, Parent Alumnus'96,'98,'03, Joann Steck­Bayat, Parent Alumnus '02, '05, and Donna Houser, Parent Alumnus '04,'08,'11.Thank you to all who support this much­needed scholarship project. Class of 1944 Celebrates 70th Reunion

On May 21, 2014, the El Cerrito High School Class of 1944 celebrated its 70th reunion. The firstgraduating class event was held at a luncheon at Spenger's Grotto in Berkeley. The nine classmembers were joined by their former English teacher, Mary McVittie. She said she was there to keepthe boys in line. Martie Martinson '44 reminded Howard Mackey '44 that he was always in theprincipal's office. 1944 Class President Ray Morrison reminisced about Ditch Day, when they went toMarin County.

The event was organized by Howard Mackey, who said there was a lot of history at his table. He wasassisted by Archiving Committee members Kathie Weinstein, Jackie Fonken and Joanne Steck­Bayat,among others. Don Ford from CBS Channel 5 KPIX filmed the event which appeared on television laterthat day. The group was joined by El Cerrito Mayor and Archiving Committee Member Janet Abelson,Gaucho Parent '92, '94, '96, '98, '08.

After lunch, the group joined members of the class of 2014 at El Cerrito High School. The 1944classmates toured the new school and admired the new Performing Arts center. Ray Morrison, 1944Class President, met Kathie Phun, 2014 Class President. The two class presidents joined theirclassmates as the ECHS Band performed the ECHS Fight Song.
