Re-installation Safety Risk of “Sub-standard” Moulded-Case Circuit Breakers in Canada

Bill Bryans has 20+ years of technical and strategic policy experience for standardization in Canada and Internationally, having been Head of Delegation with several ISO and IEC committees, including the IECEE compliance scheme. Currently Billis Vice President of Technical Services – Electrical, at Electro-Federation Canada, assisting members with the CanadianElectrical Code, National Building and Energy Codes, product standards and industry policy issues. Previously he was theStandards Council of Canada Senior Program Officer for IEC and JTC1, with the bulk of his career at IBM Canada includingbeing contracted to lead their Corporate Product Safety and standardization Program.Bill also serves on or has chaired numerous CSA technical and policy committees for electrical product safety, EMC, energyefficiency, and ISO management committees for quality and environment. He is a recipient of the International IEC 1906 andCSA Award of Merit.

Moulded-Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB) and Switches are a critical life-safety feature in every building’s load center. However, once they have been subjected to adverse conditions, such as smoke, water, or similar environmental damage, or impact offaults at current levels greater than those for which the device is rated, they should be permanently removed from theelectrical installation and destroyed. Unfortunately, that does not always happen, placing everyone living, working or investedin that subsequent installation at potentially greater safety and financial risk. Equally, MCCB and Switches that havefraudulently had their ratings and other labels falsified pose the same increased risks.

Alberta has one of, if not the best resource for solar in the country, sunlight. This presentation will familiarize theattendee with the main components that make up a photovoltaic system, basic system design requirements,Canadian Electrical Code considerations, as well as some of the driving factors behind the adoption of photovoltaics.

For many years, we have been hearing about the benefits of green power and renewable energy. No doubt there aremany benefits to both. What is often not mentioned in the conversation is what happens when the wind is notblowing, in the case of wind turbines; or the sun is not shining, in the case of solar PV installations. In both cases, thetraditional power producers, coal, natural gas, etc., must produce all the energy required by the grid. In recent years,in many parts of the world, we have seen multiple forms of energy storage technology emerge which help to bridgethe gap between peak demand and renewable energy production. In this presentation, Larry will provide anoverview of many of the energy storage technologies being installed throughout the world.
