The definition of art is “the expres-
sion or application of human creative
skill and imagination, typically in a vis-
ual form such as painting or sculpture,
producing works to be appreciated primar-
ily for their beauty or emotional power.”
So basically, art is what you create when
you express yourself through visuals.
Oxford Dictionary describes it as such.
Art can be expressed through visuals
such as, but not limited to, paintings,

drawings, sculptures, and
graphic designs.
THE BASICS- The basics of art are color,
medium, pattern, texture, shape,
rhythm, lines, and value.

Color: The property possessed
by an object of producing dif-
ferent sensations on the eye as
a result of the way the object
reflects or emits light. Change
the color of something by paint-
ing or dying it with crayons,
paints, or dyes.
Medium: The materials used in
a specific artistic technique:
oils as a medium. A specific
kind of artistic technique or
means of expression as deter-
mined by the materials used or
the creative methods involved.
Pattern: An artistic or decora-
tive design.
Texture: The distinctive physi-
cal composition or structure of
something, especially with re-
spect to the size, shape, and ar-
rangment of its parts.
Shape: The characteristic sur-
face configuration of a thing;
an outline or contour. Also,
“form”.
Rhythm: The patterned, recur-
ring alternations of contrast-
ing elements
Line: A thin continuous mark,
as that made by a pen, pencil,
or brush applied to a surface.
Value: The relative darkness or
lightness of a color

Color Wheel:
The color wheel is a wheel that
shows the colors that go with
each other and which ones are
complementary. The primary
colors are the three main col-
ors; red, blue, and yellow.
You can use a color wheel to
find what colors complement
each other and which colors
are “warm” and “cool”.

When it comes to making art, how do we
do it?!
Techniques are the ways and the skills we
use to create art. The most popular tech-
niques are drawing, painting, carpentry,
photography, sculpture, and printmaking.
