FIREWORKS It’s that time of year again!

Two notices on the subject—the following from a village

resident:

“Just a reminder to say that we still live in quite rural vil-

lages which have livestock of cattle, sheep and horses in

them, as well as many cats and dogs. These animals get very fright-

ened of noisy banger and whistling fireworks. So please choose your

fireworks carefully and use them wisely, or better still, go to organ-

ised events, as they’re much safer! Thank you.”

Also, from SCALFORD HALL we have notification that there will be a

firework display at SCALFORD HALL on the night of 4th November

2006. The display will conclude by 10.00 pm.

The next Parish Council meeting Parish Council meeting Parish Council meeting Parish Council meeting

will be held on Wednesday, 8th November,

7.30 pm in the School. HEDGES Parishioners are reminded that it is their responsibility to keep hedges alongside footpaths trimmed, to provide freedom of passage to all users of the paths. If a hedge or bush on the bounda-ries of your property is overhanging a footpath, a trimming back would be greatly appreciated.

ALLOTMENTS

Scalford allotment holders are hereby

notified that the annual rent will be in-

creased with effect from 1st April 2007

from £6 to £10 per allotment (with a pro

rata cost for half an allotment of £5).

With effect from the same date, new

allotment holders will also be required

to pay a £50 deposit, as an assurance

that the allotment will be kept in good

condition. In case of default, the

money will be used to pay for tidying it

up. Otherwise the deposit will be re-

turned when the allotment is given up.

VILLAGE NEWS Page 3

PARISH READING GROUP

We discussed “We need to talk about Kevin” by

Lionel Shriver last month. This book provoked

the most discussion at our reading group so far.

The story is written as a series of letters to a

separated husband from the mother of a child

mass murderer in America. Kevin goes into his

school and kills several of his class mates and

others besides!

Most of the discussion revolved around the

group’s ideas about nature versus nurture in

forming a person’s identity. There was also

discussion about the importance of the first few

months and years of a child’s life, the increase in

the number of this type of school mass murder in

America, and the roles of the parents in this

particular case.

We couldn’t come to a concensus as to whether

the parents/upbringing were to blame in this

case. We all thought this was an interesting,

well written, but quite harrowing book to read and

awarded 4 out of a possible 5 stars.

The Parish Reading group meets at Goadby

Marwood Village Hall: please feel free to come

along to our next meeting when we will be

reading “The Kite Runner “ by Khaled Hosseini

on Tuesday 14th November, at 7.30 pm—then

on Tuesday 12th December at 7.30 pm we will

be reading “Portrait of a Lady” by Henry James.

There is a £1 charge to cover the costs of the

village hall. Please contact Colette Stein on

01664.464.823 for further information.

THANK YOU

To everyone who gave gifts, bought raffle tickets or came along to the

Goadby Marwood Macmillan Coffee

Morning.

The total raised was £285 for Macmillan Cancer.

A special thanks to all who worked before, during and after the event to make it so successful.
