I found it most interesting when we were told the captain can almost be a pris- oner on the bridge during operations. They have their own stateroom below deck, but while the ship is underway the captain stays on the bridge in a very cramped room where they sleep, eat, and accomplish other duties never leaving the bridge. On a cruise ship, the captain has the same duties. So the people you run into most often are the stewards. These are the greeters, the hospitality individuals, those who work in the galley, and those who clean the passengers’ rooms and fold the towels in to multiple shapes for display on the bed. The stewards may have one of the most important jobs on a ship. If the ship is having issues and docked, the captain’s duties may diminish, but the stewards will be running around the ship like ants, tending to the needs of the patrons and keeping the dissatis- faction level at a minimum. Therefore, the stewards of the ship have some of the greatest re- sponsibilities on the floating city, with the goal of caring for reason they exist the passengers. Add the suffix “ship” to many words and you get a process or responsibility to work toward a goal. Scholarship means a person receives funds to study or be a “scholar” and work toward graduation. Apprenticeship describes a position where one works with an extremely knowledgeable person to gain expertise. What about when you add the suffix “ship” to the word “steward”? First, to do so would indicate a process. It’s not a one-time event of being a steward and you’re done. Just like those who are lifetime scholars, stewardship is a life-long responsi- bility. Secondly, just like the steward on a ship, stewardship indicates a responsibility, a duty if you will, to care for something very valuable. In Old Testament times, the responsibility of caring for the tabernacle fell to the tribe who had been set apart for service the Levities. Their entire lives were focused on serving God, performing sacrifices, praying, and conducting services. As such, they were to receive no land when the Israelites crossed into the promise land. So what of the other tribes? The other eleven tribes received land from which would come their livelihood with live- stock and foodstuffs grown. Because of this blessing from God, the tribes were instructed to bring a portion of livestock and grains into the temple, or as we find in scripture, the “storehouse”. The Levites cared for many people in that society as well as run the dealings of the temple. With the portions brought into the temple by the eleven tribes, the temple was maintained, people in need were cared for, and offerings were made to God for the bounty He had bestowed on the nation. The only place God challenges us to test Him is in Malachi. He promises if we will only follow His commandment to bring a tithe into the “storehouse”, His church, He will pour out blessings so great we will not be able to hold them. Stewardship is a responsibility. Stewardship is an honor. Stewardship is also a prom- ise. By supporting the church with time, talents, prayers, gifts, and services, we are following the call from God to care for HIS church and all that come in need. Stewards on the High Seas

Ever take a cruise? Rarely would you run into the captain during

operations of the ship, as he/she would be busy directing the navigation of the

vessel. I remember taking a tour of an aircraft carrier many years ago. I

found it most interesting when we were told the captain can almost be a pris-

oner on the bridge during operations. They have their own stateroom below

deck, but while the ship is underway the captain stays on the bridge in a very cramped room

where they sleep, eat, and accomplish other duties – never leaving the bridge.

On a cruise ship, the captain has the same duties. So the people you run into most

often are the stewards. These are the greeters, the hospitality individuals, those who work in

the galley, and those who clean the passengers’ rooms and fold the towels in to multiple shapes

for display on the bed. The stewards may have one of the most important jobs on a ship. If the

ship is having issues and docked, the captain’s duties may diminish, but the stewards will be

running around the ship like ants, tending to the needs of the patrons and keeping the dissatis-

faction level at a minimum. Therefore, the stewards of the ship have some of the greatest re-

sponsibilities on the floating city, with the goal of caring for reason they exist – the passengers.

Add the suffix “ship” to many words and you get a process or responsibility to work

toward a goal. Scholarship means a person receives funds to study or be a “scholar” and work

toward graduation. Apprenticeship describes a position where one works with an extremely

knowledgeable person to gain expertise. What about when you add the suffix “ship” to the word

“steward”?

First, to do so would indicate a process. It’s not a one-time event of being a steward

and you’re done. Just like those who are lifetime scholars, stewardship is a life-long responsi-

bility. Secondly, just like the steward on a ship, stewardship indicates a responsibility, a duty

if you will, to care for something very valuable.

In Old Testament times, the responsibility of caring for the tabernacle fell to the tribe

who had been set apart for service – the Levities. Their entire lives were focused on serving

God, performing sacrifices, praying, and conducting services. As such, they were to receive no

land when the Israelites crossed into the promise land. So what of the other tribes?

The other eleven tribes received land from which would come their livelihood with live-

stock and foodstuffs grown. Because of this blessing from God, the tribes were instructed to

bring a portion of livestock and grains into the temple, or as we find in scripture, the

“storehouse”. The Levites cared for many people in that society as well as run the dealings of

the temple. With the portions brought into the temple by the eleven tribes, the temple was

maintained, people in need were cared for, and offerings were made to God for the bounty He

had bestowed on the nation.

The only place God challenges us to test Him is in Malachi. He promises if we will

only follow His commandment to bring a tithe into the “storehouse”, His church, He will pour

out blessings so great we will not be able to hold them.

Stewardship is a responsibility. Stewardship is an honor. Stewardship is also a prom-

ise. By supporting the church with time, talents, prayers, gifts, and services, we are following

the call from God to care for HIS church and all that come in need. During this stewardship

season, let’s all keep in mind we are on a journey of the highest calling, as we cruise through

this life.

Straighten our stewardship uniforms and remember what we have in Christ’s church

because of Him – everlasting life to those who choose! Anchor’s away!!!!

Opportunities to Connect and Engage

Looking for a way to serve?

Consider joining one of our Hospitality teams. This is an easy and fun way to meet oth-

ers by greeting them on a Sunday morning. We currently have seven teams and we

would like to add another team for 2020, giving us a total of eight teams. We are on a

rotating schedule that is posted on the bulletin board in the hall-

way.

We also have a list of substitutes that may be called on when

someone scheduled is out of town or just unable to help.

If this is something you would like to do, please contact Shirley

Roddenberry at 501-701-0038.

Thank You Tom Seibert! Several months ago, Tom Seibert brought to our attention that the

AED (automated external defibrillator) device we have at the church

was outdated and no longer compatible with the equipment carried by

LifeNet and other Village emergency vehicles. Tom researched the cost

of replacing our unit for $1,800, and Leadership decided to proceed

with the purchase. We learned this week that Tom also applied for a

grant to offset some of the cost, and were informed that LifeNet will

cover all but $600 of the replacement cost. So, within the next few

weeks we will have a new updated unit installed, and will then schedule a training session for

all interested parties in how to use the unit.

Thank you, Tom, for your care and concern for the people of Mountainside and our community,

and for your diligence in helping secure the grant.

We need baked goodies for our Craft Fair coming up.

Please sign up at the Connecting Counter and put

your aprons on!

PROJECT GIVING TREE

The Mountain Pine Schools were very happy to get the school supplies that we

collected for them. After visiting with the office we

asked if there was anything else they needed. They

suggested we help out the art department because the

art teacher has no budget to buy supplies.

Our Project Giving Tree program this month is to col-

lect supplies that can be used at their elementary

schools. A list is coming, but if you are shopping at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Wal-

mart, or any other stores, please pick something up for the kids. Mountainside

does a great job and with missions.

Let’s make a difference for the kids at Mountain Pine. Thanks!

Upper Room Gatherings

Our next Upper Room gathering will be on Tuesday, Nov. 5, meeting at the

church at 6:00 pm. We will have a chili supper with all participants invited to

bring a pot of their favorite chili or a side dish.

As always, all Mountainsiders are invited to attend

these gatherings, and to invite friends, neighbors, and

new acquaintances to come and experience the Moun-

tainside spirit.

The lesson will be led by Rev. Doug and Terry Crum-

pler and will center on the recent Leadership Institute which they attended, and

their “take aways” from the conference.

Christmas Music in our HEARTS…..What’s your Christmas Top 5? I know we haven’t even made it to Thanksgiving yet but I’m asking about Christmas? It is with good reason….it’s that time of year for those of us planning worship to look at the arch of the season of Advent and the glorious celebration of Christ’s birth. And so I’m listening to hear what God wants our worship to look like…. But we know - our worship isn’t about the folks up front. We just provide the music. In fact, our Music Ministry at Mountainside is about all of us praising God and loving each other. So I’m looking for some information from you, my dear Chorus mem-bers…. When you think of Advent and Christmas – what songs do you love? What songs move your soul? Any songs that can bring you to tears or give you goosebumps? THESE are the songs I want to know. Old, traditional, or new and contemporary – I want to know all of them – even if it is just Silent Night – I want to know how God is talking to you through music Email me your Christmas top 5 (or top 10 or 3 or just your 1 favorite) at [email protected]. Text a few songs to me - 501-507-8988. Or - You can call and leave me a voice mail at 501-507-8988 too (if technology isn’t your strong suit). And to start us off – here is one of my “goosebump songs”- Wonderful Counselor by John Michael Talbot (https://youtu.be/ILahGjFHQB0) Every time we come together - I thank God for your voice and your presence... With so much love- Suz Lamoureux Kriesant
