4. Do not disassemble water lines orremove cartridges where spilled watercould contact equipment that requireselectrical service. Disassembly of waterlines and removal of cartridges will resultin water spillage. Electrical shock hazardcould result.

3. Avoid splashing disinfecting solutions onclothing or skin.

4. Ensure all piping connections are tight toavoid chemical leakage.

5. Ensure adequate ventilation.

SAFETY INFORMATION

The Barnstead EASYpure LF is a line-fed water purification system designed to provide TypeI reagent-grade water with extremely low organic content. It uses a three-stage deionizationprocess combined with a 0.2 micron filter to polish pretreated water (distilled, deionized, orreverse osmosis) to produce water with a resistivity of up to 18.3 megohms-cm and witha total organic carbon content of less than 15 ppb. Water resistivity is continuously sensedby a resistivity cell and displayed on a digital display.

Dimensions and Clearance Requirements.EASYpure LF dimensions - 12 7/8" W X 19" D X 17 1/8" H (32.7 cm X 48.3 cm X 43.5 cm).

Clearances:Sides - 4" (10.2 cm) minimum to allow air flow.Above - 12" (30.5 cm) minimum for removal of the top cover.

2. Place the EASYpure LF on a bench topconvenient to your work area, noting theClearance Requirements.

3. Tape the 1/4" OD x 1/4" NPT tubingadapter using 1 1/2 to 2 turns of Teflon®

tape, and install it on your incomingwater line or your storage reservoir.

4. Install one end of the tubing to thisadapter, but do not install the other endon the EASYpure LF until cartridgeshave been installed. You will connect thewater supply to the quick disconnectbody in the Initial Operation section.Refer to the Tubing AdapterInstallation section of this manual.

Tubing Adapter Installation1. Completely disassemble the fitting.

Refer to Figure 3 to familiarize yourselfwith the names of the componentparts.

2. Make sure the tubing is cut offreasonably square and that no plasticburrs or ridges are present.

3. Place the grab ring and backup ring inthe hex nut in the order and orientationshown in Figure 3. Thread the nut ontothe adapter. DO NOT use the o-ring atthis time.

4. Push the tubing through the nut until itbottoms out in the adapter.

5. Remove the adapter nut and tubing.Place the o-ring over the tubing. Becareful not to push the backup ring orgrab ring further back on the tubingwhen installing the o-ring.

6. Install the hex nut on the adapter andhand tighten.

NoteTo disrupt the flow of water to theEASYpure LF, press the stainlesssteel thumb pad on the quickdisconnect fitting. The insert withthe valve is easily removed. Toresupply the EASYpure LF withwater, push the insert into thecoupling body and listen for theclick that indicates full closure.

Wall MountingInstall the wall bracket on the wall in a locationthat is accessible to water and convenient to use.A minimum of 4 fasteners must be used.

1. Remove the pump interlock plug fromthe rear of the unit.

2. Open cartridge access door in the rearof the unit.

3. Remove the cover of the EASYpure LFby removing the screws that secure it tothe unit and lifting it straight up.

4. Remove tubing attached to quickdisconnect body.

5. Remove the inlet quick disconnect bodyfrom the rear of the EASYpure LFcabinet.

6. On both sides of the wall bracket thereare plugs. Remove the plug from theside that is most accessible to yourfeedwater source. Install the inlet quickdisconnect body fitting into the hole byplacing the inlet quick disconnect intothe hole and secure in place with thelocknut inside. Replace the plug in the


CautionWall composition, condition andconstruction, as well as fastenertype, must be considered whenmounting this unit. The mountingsurface and fasteners selectedmust be capable of supporting aminimum of 150 lbs. Inadequatesupport and/or fasteners mayresult in damage to mountingsurface and/or equipment. CautionDo not tighten tube fitting hex nutwith a wrench. Tight connectionscan be easily made by hand.

hole generated in the EASYpure LF(where the disconnect body wasinstalled).

7. Remove the four feet from theEASYpure LF and retain the screws.

8. Place the EASYpure LF on the wallbracket swivel base so the screwholes where the feet were attachedline up with the holes in the wallbracket. There are guides on the wallbracket that will mate with theEASYpure LF.

9. Install the four screws removed in step7 through the bottom of the wallbracket and into the EASYpure LF.

10. Snake the tubing removed in step 4through the hole in the EASYpure LFfloor and the wall bracket and attach itto the quick disconnect body installedon the side of the bracket.

11. Installing feed tubing from the watersource to the quick disconnect bodyon the outside of the bracket cannotbe done until cartridges have beeninstalled. You will connect the watersupply to the quick disconnect body inthe Initial Operation section of thismanual.

12. Replace the EASYpure LF cover.

13. Reinstall the pump interlock plug.


NoteEnsure there are no kinks in thetubing that could restrict water flow.

NoteOutlet of feedwater storage tankmust be above or at the same levelas the inlet valve on the EASYpureLF.

Cartridge Installation andRinse Up

1. Open cartridge access door in the rearof the unit by pushing the door latchdown.

2. Remove a new Pretreatment cartridge(Catalog No. D50230 or D50231) fromits plastic bag.

3. Wet the o-rings on both end caps.

4. Press the upper end cap into theupper right position until it bottoms out.

5. Lower the cartridge and insert thelower end cap into the lower socketuntil it is firmly seated.

6. Repeat steps 2 - 5 with the EASYpureULTRApure and High Purity/Low TOCcartridges, placing them in the centerand left-hand positions. Do not install0.2 micron filter and bell assembly atthis time.

7. Close cartridge access door.

8. Open draw-off valve.

9. Connect water supply to quick discon-nect body.

10. Plug power cord into the unit’s powerentry module and plug into a liveoutlet. Turn on power entry moduleswitch.

Initial Operation

NoteIf the EASYpure LF is wall mounted,rotate the EASYpure LF until thecartridge access door faces forwardand the EASYpure LF locks intoplace.

NoteThe EASYpure LF’s cartridges mustbe installed in the proper order.

NoteThe upper end cap is the one withthe rightangle turn and the twoflanges. The lower end cap extendsstraight out from the cartridge.

NoteThe two flanges on the end capshould be able to slide down oneach side of the keyway wall.

11. Press “START”.

12. Rinse 5-10 liters of water through thecartridges to drain.

13. Remove a new 0.2 micron filter and bellassembly from its bag and insert it intothe Luer fitting. Gently turn it clockwiseuntil it is fully seated in the Luer fitting.

14. Remove the protective cap from the filterbell.

15. Flush 5-10 liters of water through thefilter to waste.

INITIAL OPERATION

CautionDo not allow EASYpure LF tooperate unless water is availableto unit.

NoteFor more demanding applicationswhere low TOC water is required,a rinse of 15-20 liters through thecartridges and filter may benecessary.

1. Press the “START” button on the frontof the EASYpure LF.

The EASYpure LF’s pump will begin to run andthe Purity meter will display the resistivity of thewater in megohm-cm.

2. Allow the water’s resistivity to rise tothe desired purity before drawing offwater.

Water Draw off1. Remove the protective cap from the

filter bell.

2. Depress the draw-off lever.

3. When draw off is complete, lift thedraw-off lever and replace theprotective cap on the filter bell.

Run and Standby ModesSince not all qualities of permissible feedwaterwill reach maximum resistivity after one passthrough the unit’s cartridges (especially as thecartridges near exhaustion), the EASYpure LFhas two operational modes.

Normal Operation

NoteOn initial start-up, the purity metermay display “ERR.” This is causedby air in the cell and should bereplaced by a resistivity readingalmost immediately. If “ERR” doesnot go out after the pump has run fora minute or if it appears any timewhile the EASYpure LF is inoperation, refer to theTroubleshooting section of thismanual.

NoteFor low organic applications, drawoff 50 to 100 ml of water fromsystem and discard prior to drawingwater for use.

In the run mode, the pump continuouslyrecirculates water through the cartridges. This isthe mode that the unit enters upon start-up. Ifwater will be drawn from the EASYpure LF on acontinuous basis throughout the day, it isrecommended that the EASYpure LF be left in therun mode. In the run mode, the purity meterdisplay indicates the resistivity of the wateravailable for draw off.

In standby mode, the pump runs for ten minutesout of every hour (i.e. ten minutes on, fiftyminutes off). If water will be drawn from the unitonly infrequently, it is recommended that the unitbe put into standby mode. To put the unit intostandby mode, press the “STANDBY” button onthe front of the unit. The purity meter’s digitaldisplay will display “Sby” to indicate that the unitis in standby mode.

NORMAL OPERATION

Accessories D0603, D0606 (float switches) andD2706 (pressure switch) are designed to pro-tect the EASYpure LF pump by alerting theEASYpure LF of an inadequate feedwatercondition so that the pump can be shut down.Use the following instructions for installation.

1. Disconnect electrical power.

2. If using D0603 or D0606 float switch,follow the installation instructionsincluded with the float switch forinstallation to tank.

3. If using D2706 low pressure switch,install the PVC tee (supplied withD2706) in incoming water line. Screwthe switch into the top of the tee, thenconnect the inlet tubing to theEASYpure LF with the remainingopening.

4. Route cable from float or low pressureswitch to the rear of the EASYpure LF.

5. Remove jumper plug and save forfuture use.

6. Plug cable into jumper plug outlet.

Cartridge ReplacementThe frequency with which you will need to replacecartridges is dependent on your feedwater’scharacteristics, your purity requirements and yourusage. Replace the cartridges when the productwater purity drops below acceptable levels ofresistivity or when organic levels become toohigh.

Cartridge Removal1. Turn unit off.

2. Disconnect the unit from the powersupply.

3. Disconnect incoming water line at quickdisconnect. Depressurize system byopening outlet valve.

4. Open the cartridge access door in therear of the unit by sliding the latch downand pulling the door toward you. Thedoor will swing down.

5. Grasp one of the cartridges at the bot-tom and pull it straight up to disconnectthe lower end cap from the lower socket.

6. Move cartridge upward until uppersocket is in keyhole of keyway.

7. Pull cartridge straight out from unit todisconnect upper end cap from uppersocket.

8. Repeat steps for the other cartridges.

Maintenance and Servicing

WarningDisconnect from the power supplyprior to maintenance andservicing. Refer servicing toqualified personnel. Do notdisassemble water lines orremove cartridges where spilledwater could contact equipmentthat requires electrical service.Disassembly of water lines andremoval of cartridges will result inwater spillage. Electrical shockhazard could result.

NoteThe cartridges will still containwater when removed. Therefore,you will want to have a sink,bucket or other waterproofcontainer available to place themin after removal.

WarningDepressurize system prior toopening cartridge access door.

NoteIf the EASYpure LF is wallmounted, remove the power cordand rotate the EASYpure LF untilthe cartridge access door facesforward and the EASYpure LFlocks into place.

9. Discard the used cartridges. (See notebelow.)

10. Install new cartridges and rinseaccording to the instructions forCartridge Installation in the InitialOperation section.

0.2 Micron Filter ReplacementReplace the 0.2 micron final filter whenever anyof the following conditions occur: every 30 days,theproduct water flow rate is reduced or bacteriabreak through. The 0.2 micron filter is shippedassembled with a bell. To replace the 0.2micron filter assembly:

1. Remove the old 0.2 micron filterassembly by turning it counterclock-wise until it is free from the Luer fitting.

2. Remove the new 0.2 micron filterassembly from its bag and insert it intothe Luer fitting. Gently turn it clockwiseuntil it is fully seated in the Luer fitting.

3. Rinse at least 10 liters of waterthrough the filter to drain prior to usingthe product water.

NoteA small amount of water will drainfrom the cartridge when it is discon-nected from the lower socket. Plugthe cartridge’s lower opening withyour finger to minimize water spill-age while you finish removing thecartridge.

NoteUsed cartridges may be recycled.See P.U.R.E. information packedwith new cartridges.

MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING

CautionDo not overtighten the 0.2 micronfilter assembly onto the Luer fittingor use excessive force in seating it.The filter and/or Luer fitting can bedamaged by overtightening orexcessive force.

NoteIf a newly installed 0.2 micron filterclogs rapidly after installation, theEASYpure LF may need to besanitized to remove bacterialcontaminants. See SystemSanitization.

General CleaningWipe exterior surfaces with lightly dampenedcloth containing mild soap solution.

System SanitizationThe frequency with which you will need to cleanyour unit and replace your cartridges isdependent on your feedwater’s characteristics,your purity requirements and your usage.Sanitize your EASYpure LF and replace thecartridges when the product water purity dropsbelow acceptable levels of resistivity, whenorganic levels become too high, or if a new 0.2micron filter clogs rapidly after installation eventhough the cartridges were thoroughly rinsedbefore the 0.2 micron filter was installed. Tosanitize the EASYpure LF, the purificationcartridges must be replaced with a sanitizationcartridge and the two empty cartridges. Thesimple-to-use sanitization cartridge (CatalogNumber D50245) and two empty cartridges(D7034) are available fromBarnstead|Thermolyne or your localrepresentative.

1. Turn the unit off.

2. Disconnect the unit from the powersupply. Disconnect the unit from thewater supply.

3. Depressurize system by opening thedraw-off valve.

4. Open the cartridge access door in therear of the unit by sliding the latch downand pulling the door toward you. Thedoor will swing down.

Maintenance and Servicing

WarningDisconnect from the power supplyprior to maintenance andservicing. Refer servicing toqualified personnel. Avoidsplashing disinfecting solutions onclothing or skin. Ensure all pipingconnections are tight to avoidchemical leakage. Ensureadequate ventilation. Carefullyfollow manufacturer’s safetyinstructions on labels of chemicalcontainers and material safetydata sheets.

NoteThe cartridges will still containwater when removed. Therefore,you will want to have a sink,bucket or other waterproofcontainer available to place themin after removal.

5. Remove exhausted cartridge in theright-hand position by pulling it first upand then out.

6. Remove a D50245 sanitization car-tridge from its packaging. Press theupper end cap of the D50245 sanitiza-tion cartridge into the upper rightposition until it bottoms out.

7. Lower the cartridge and insert thelower end cap into the lower socketuntil it is firmly seated.

8. Repeat steps 2 - 6 with the two emptycartridges supplied with yourEASYpure LF, placing them in thecenter and left-hand positions.

9. Close the cartridge access door.Remove the 0.2 micron filter and bellassembly.

10. Sanitize, install new cartridges andrinse according to the instructions forCartridge Installation and Rinse Up inthe Initial Operation section.

Fuse Replacement1. Turn the system off.


3. Disconnect the EASYpure LF from thepower supply.

4. Remove the power cord from the powerentry module, and remove the pumpinterlock plug from the rear of the unit.

5. Remove the screws securing theEASYpure LF cover.

6. Remove the cover by lifting it straight up.

7. Pull out the fuse drawer located in thepower entry module.

8. Remove old fuses and replace withfuses of the same type and rating. (SeeParts Listing.)

9. Replace fuse drawer.


CautionDo not operate the pump dry. Dryrunning will damage the pump.

10. Replace cover, power cord, and pumpinterlock plug.

11. Reconnect unit to power supply, andconnect incoming water line at quickdisconnect.

1. Turn system off.

2. Disconnect incoming water line atquick disconnect. Depressurize sys-tem by opening outlet valve.


4. Remove the power cord from thepower entry module, and remove thepump interlock plug from the rear ofthe unit.

6. Remove the cover by lifting it straight up.

7. Remove the filter and the Luer fitting.

8. Remove the screws securing the frontcover. Remove the front cover.

9. Disconnect the membrane switch leadfrom the printed circuit board.

10. Disconnect the resistivity cell lead fromthe printed circuit board.

11. Disconnect the printed circuit boardrelay plug by squeezing the retainingclip while pulling the plug straight outfrom the frame.

12. Remove the nuts holding the printedcircuit board in place.

13. Remove the printed circuit board.Disconnect power supply (3 wires) fromprinted circuit board.


WarningReplace fuses with those of thesame type and rating.

14. Reconnect power supply to newprinted circuit board and install thenew printed circuit board. Refer toelectrical diagrams.

15. Reconnect the resistivity cell lead andprinted circuit board relay plug.

16. Reconnect the membrane switch lead.

17. Reinstall the front cover.

18. Re-tape the Luer fitting with newTeflon® tape and reinstall fitting.

19. Reinstall the EASYpure LF’s cover.

20. Reconnect the power cord and thepump interlock plug to the unit, andreconnect the unit to the power supply.Connect the incoming water line atquick disconnect.

Cleaning the Resistivity Cell1. Turn unit off.



4. Remove the power cord from the powerentry module, and remove the pumpinterlock plug from the rear of the unit.


6. Remove the cover by lifting it straight up.Remove the filter and Luer fitting. Care-fully remove the front cover. Disconnectmembrane switch lead from the printedcircuit board.

7. Remove the screw holding the cell-cableretaining clip.

8. Disconnect the cell lead from the printedcircuit board and gently pull the cableout of the EASYpure LF frame.

9. Unscrew and remove the cell.

10. Carefully remove the O-ring beforecleaning the cell.

11. Wash the cell in a mild detergentsolution or a 10% Hydrochloric orSulfuric acid solution (follow acidmanufacturers warnings andrecommended handling procedure).This may be done in an ultrasoniccleaner or with a soft brush.

12. Thoroughly rinse the cell in deionizedor distilled water following thedetergent or acid cleaning.

13. After cleaning, reinstall and check theo-ring on cell; replace if necessary.

14. Reinstall the cell into the cell well andhand tighten. Reroute the cable upthrough the housing and reconnect.

15. Reinstall the screw holding thecell-cable retaining clip. Reinstallmembrane switch lead. Replace thefront cover. Re-tape the Luer fittingwith new Teflon® tape and reinstallfitting. Replace the top cover.


CautionThe cell electrodes are etched toimprove wetting characteristics. Donot mechanically abrade or damagethis surface (i.e. do not clean with awire brush, sandpaper, etc.)

WarningCarefully follow manufacturer’ssafety instructions on labels ofchemical containers and materialsafety data sheets.

CautionDo not immerse the entire cellassembly in cleaning solution, onlythe electrode portion.

16. Reconnect the power cord and thepump interlock plug to the unit, andreconnect the unit to the power supply.Connect incoming water line at quickdisconnect.

ShutdownIf the EASYpure LF is to be shut down for anextended period of time, the unit should becompletely drained and the cartridges removed toprevent the growth of bacteria.

If the system has remained inactive and full ofwater for more than 96 hours, the unit should bedrained, sanitized and new cartridges installedprior to use.

ConsumablesConsumable parts are those required to support the day-to-day operation of this equipment.Barnstead|Thermolyne establishes two types of consumables; those items that mustperiodically be replaced to maintain performance (filters, resin cartridges, etc.) and otheritems of limited life (indicator lights, fuses, etc.) that you can expect to replace on a more orless random basis. Where practical, Barnstead|Thermolyne recommends the frequency ofreplacement, or provides information on life expectancy from which you may calculate areplacement interval compatible with your usage pattern.

The replacement of consumable parts is discussed in the MAINTENANCE AND SERVICINGsection to assist you in accomplishing your own service.Consumables may be ordered separately and in some cases, as an expendables kit. Barnstead|Thermolyne Corporation warrants that if a product manufactured byBarnstead|Thermolyne and sold by it within the continental United States or Canadaproves to be defective in material or construction, it will provide you, without charge, for aperiod of ninety (90) days, the labor, and a period of one (1) year, the parts, necessary toremedy any such defect. Outside the continental United States and Canada, the warrantyprovides, for one (1) year, the parts necessary to remedy any such defect. The warrantyperiod shall commence either six (6) months following the date the product is sold byBarnstead|Thermolyne or on the date it is purchased by the original retail consumer,whichever date occurs first.
