THE CITY

Refugees founded Venice. When Germanictribes ravaged northern Italy in the5th-century, many people escaped to thisdifficult-to-access area on the AdriaticSea.

Over the centuries the refugee communitygrew in to the most powerful trading portin the Mediterranean. At its peak, Venicehad 3.000 trade ships and 300 navyvessels. After the fall of Napoleon, Venicewas ruled by the Austrians, but after the1848 uprising, the city once again gainedits independence. Shortly after, in 1866,Venice became part of Italy. 1932 saw theopening of the motor and rail bridgebetween Venice and the mainland, thatwas to be the start of Venice as a touristdestination.

It is hard to navigate around the city, but don’t let that put you off, as this is part ofVenice’s charm. Leave the other touristsat St Mark’s square and the Rialto Bridgeand explore the labyrinth of littleneighbourhoods instead. The mostinteresting areas and islands areCannaregio, SanPolo/Santa Croce,Dorsoduro, San Marco and Castello.

The whole city is a unique sight in itself, there is nothing like it anywhere else inthe world. The best way to explore Veniceis by foot.

Piazza San MarcoPiazza San Marco, aka Mark’s Square, is the biggest square in Venice, and themost faous one too. Grand CanalThe Grand Canal is the largest canal in town, almost 4 km long and at places aswide as 90 m with an average depth of 5m. Public transport is available in the formof vaporetti - water buses, gondolas andwater taxis. There are plenty of famousbuildings located along the river and it iscrossed by three bridges.

Rialto Fish MarketThis fish and vegetable market has been around since the year 1097, and there is afrantic activity here, especially early inthe mornings. Peggy Guggenheim CollectionPeggy Guggenheim was the wife of the artist Max Ernst and the museum ishoused in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, whichis her former home. Her art collectionwere opened to the public in 1951 andpeople can now enjoy art from Europeanand American art from the first half of the20th century.

Ca’ RezzonicoLonghena’s palazzo is one of the most beautiful buildings in the whole city. Itwas completed in 1756, over 100 yearsafter the first day of construction andtoday it serves as a museum with aninteresting display of 18th century Venice.

EATING

Venice has a large variety of restaurants. As usual with Italian cities, the best diningexperience can be had at a simpleneighbourhood trattoria off the touriststrips. Venice has many culinaryspecialities, like bigoli in an anchovy andmushroom sauce, or castraure—tinyartichokes with Parmesan shavings and


olive oil.

Make sure to always look at the bottom ofthe menu to see if a service fee is addedto your bill. "Service included" or "12%added/charged" means that another 12%of the total cost will be added to your bill."Non cover" means no service fee includedin the price and no additional charge.

Da FioreThis used to be a neighbourhood bar serving una ombra (a shadow), Venetianslang for a glass of wine. Today Da Fiorecould quite possibly be the city’s bestrestaurant, with sober decor and disheslike misto crudo (marinated raw fish) andpennette with crayfish tails and broccoli.

AirportsVenice Marco Polo Airport is situated 6 miles north of the city. Buses, taxicabsand boats are available for the journey into Venice. A one-way ticket for the bus is€5 and the taxi cabs charge €40. Thescheduled boat taxi Alilaguna (same stopsas the boat buses) charges approximately€15.

Aeroporto Treviso, sometimes referred to as Venice’s package tour airport, lies 18miles north of Venice. Buses depart forthe Mestre train station and connectingtrains to the island. Buses are €6 one-wayand €10 for a return ticket.
