PUBLISHED FOR THE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF GRACE CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, RUTLAND, VERMONT
Eastertide Worship — Living Resurrection
Easter is more than just one Sunday of lilies, tulips, and daffodils, beautiful brass quartet, singing, and
bells! It is a season lasting for 7 Sundays and 50 days. Maybe the early church knew that it would take
that many days and weeks for us to be able to live into the hope and new life that is offered to us in
the news of Jesus’ resurrection.
Throughout Eastertide, we will explore how God calls us to LIVE RESURRECTION, to be the people
of good news and hope and new life. As individuals, a community, and world … we need good news
and hope and new life. As the world outside comes back to life this spring, join us in worship as
together we explore what it means to be God’s Easter people.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR
Giving Resurrection Away…
After another beautiful Easter morning
at Grace, including the sunrise service,
our family made their annual trek to
the Merck Forest in Rupert to enjoy the amazing
views of the Adirondack Mountains and to see if
the spring lambs had been born. There were no
baby lambs to enjoy, but we did greet the two
Belgian Draft horses and hear some chickens
cackling! We took pictures and just enjoyed the
warm afternoon breezes racing over the mountain-
scape. It was Kyle who noticed that the trees had
yet to show their buds, a sure sign of spring!
It’s no coincidence that we celebrate Easter around
the vernal equinox! The resurrection of our Lord
and the resurrection of spring vegetation give us
powerful illustrations that life comes through death,
that new growth comes through dormancy, that
death does not conquer life hidden within the soul.
Even dead wood decays to become nutrient-rich
soil for new growth to spring forth! It is a powerful
annual reminder that we should always take keen
notice of to empower us through the year ahead.
Alastair, Tracy and I wrestled with the Easter
message this year. Tracy suggested that my message
could be profoundly short and sweet. In seminary,
we heard of a famous preacher who stood in the
pulpit on Easter morning and announced, “Christ is
Risen!” To which his dutiful congregation respond-
ed, “Christ is Risen, indeed!” After repeating that
phrase a couple more times, crescendoing with
each repetition, he remarked, “What more needs
to be said? But, let the music play!” And, he sat
down, to everyone’s amazement! Oh, how I wanted
to do that with you all and see the reactions on
your faces and hear your thoughts afterward!
It’s true, really! What more can we say about the
resurrection than to blurt it out that it happened,
and that Christ has truly risen from the grave!? It is
the most powerful event that has ever taken place in
human history! It is greater than anything we
have ever done or accomplished! Jesus has
returned from death to pronounce death is
done! The fear of death is no more and we are
now empowered to go back into life and live it
fully, to its most powerful conclusions!
What more needs to be said? …other than to
share this truth with those who have perhaps
heard it and not yet come to fully understand its
power or implications? We live on in the power
of God’s Yes when we share the empowerment
we receive daily by reminding ourselves that we
live in the wake of resurrection hope,
resurrection love, resurrection power! This is
how the church will survive into the decades
ahead! When we strive to share our hope, love
and power with those who do not know it.
When we share the strength we’ve received
through following Jesus and entrusting ourselves
to Jesus, we become walking billboards for
rejuvenation, for renewal, for new growth. We
become like the living buds of resurrection hope
bursting forth from the trees after a long
winter’s hibernation!
What a gift we offer to those seeking that
renewal! What a joy we can offer to those
who’ve only known pain! What a breath of fresh
air we can offer those who’ve known only the
stale smoke of political rancor! It’s not religious
fantasy, it’s as real as Twitter or Facebook posts
this morning – only, you are the posts of hope that
God desires to read in his daily feed! The choice is
ours…do we live into resurrection and strive to
give it away? Or, do we keep it all to ourselves
and relish it in the wake of grand music?
Oh, and those buds? They popped this morning
outside our home! A sure sign that life is
abundant and gaining strength. Be the bud! Be the
hope! Be the resurrection! And give it away…
Happy Easter/Spring/Life/Hope/Earth Day!
John

Healing Ministry By Rev. Bob Boutwell
Grace Church offers a Healing Prayer Service on the second Sunday of each month,
with the next one in the Chapel on Sunday, May 12 at 11:25 a.m. Those who need
healing are invited to come and receive the healing love of Jesus with the laying on of hands by the
deacons of the church. We offer the cleansing and healing of prayer by the gathered congregation, the
anointing with oil by the pastor, and the healing power of the Holy Spirit. In prayer you may ask Jesus
for repair of physical damage that you have suffered, healing from illness, emotional pain, psychological
disorders, or inner healing of hurtful memories. You may ask the Holy Spirit for healing of genetic and
inherited disorders that have come down through your family. You may ask Jesus to extend healing to
your family members and friends and others about whom you are concerned. Members of the
congregation are also urged to come to praise God for healings they have received or have heard
about and to offer prayers for those who have come seeking healing.
In Luke 6:27 we read that Jesus said, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless
those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you.” Francis MacNutt reminds us that curses
really hurt us. Curses are works of Satan and add to the atmosphere of evil we must contend with
and the weight of evil we carry upon our shoulders. A curse creates an opening for Satan to enter us
and work within us. When we have been cursed, we need to forgive the person who has cursed us
and we need to ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse us of any evil that the curse has allowed to get in. Jesus
can set us free from the curse and can heal the damage that the curse has caused. When we curse
someone or something, we are assisting Satan and we open ourselves to Satan and Satan’s evil spirits.
Whenever we say, “God damn __”, we are joining Satan to tempt God to do something evil. When
someone offends us or cuts us off in traffic, perhaps we should pray that God will bless them. It
would be good to say, “God bless you!” to people more often than just when they sneeze. When we
bless people we wish them goodness and mercy and we add to the goodness and love with which
God surrounds them. That can be very healing for them and for us also.
Every Wednesday I am in my office at the church from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and am available at other
times for healing prayers and consultations. You may contact me by phone at 802.773.3057.or by
email at [email protected].

Hello from Finance and your Treasurer, Matt Getty ~
As of March 31, 2019, we expected to be in a deficit position based on how the actual budget has
performed over the years. The budgeted net figure for the first quarter was a negative $35,557;
we ended the quarter better than expected with a negative $27,504. This is based on gross
income of $121,795 against gross expenses of $149,300, for a net loss for the quarter of
$27,504.
How can you help bring us back into the black? If everyone keeps their pledge current, we
anticipate balancing the budget over the course of the year. Contact Beth in the Office for
details (802.775.4301). Thank you.

A special offering for CWS Blankets will be taken on Sunday, May 12. Mother’s Day cards will be
on sale for $5 on Sundays, April 28 and May 5 after worship services. Cards are also available in
the Church Office. For each $5.00 you contribute for a much-needed Church World Service blanket,

Grace Church Helps CWS with Hygiene Kits and School Bags
From September through April, the Women’s Sewing Group meets monthly to sew school bags
and to collect items to fill those bags and Hygiene Kits for Church World Service. School kits give
children in impoverished schools, refugee camps, or other difficult settings some of the basic tools
for learning. In the face of natural disasters, violence, or grinding poverty, hygiene kits can mean the
difference between sickness and health for struggling families.
On April 23, ten intrepid volunteers gathered to pack and prepare for shipping both the school and
the hygiene kits. They packed 134 school bags and 212 hygiene kits!! Heartfelt thanks to the sewing
group, the packers, and to all who donated items for filling the bags.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
This is not a story about a dog, but it is indirectly. The story begins with the
dog, a dog that is dispatched from this life with a pitchfork, and the ensuing
detective interest of a neighbor's son. The boy’s name is Christopher, and he is
precocious, devising the rules that seem to govern what he does and can/cannot
eat. For instance, he dislikes the color yellow so he refuses to eat corn. His
food must not touch another food on his plate or else he refuses to eat it.
A similar example of the systems that govern Christopher's actions for the day
are this: 4 red cars seen in a row means Good Day, 5 red cars seen in a row
means a Super Good Day, and 4 yellow cars seen in a row is a Black Day. "I
said I liked things to be in order!" Christopher cannot stand to be touched, nor
to relate to strangers.
Despite his dad's admonition to "mind his own business and not get involved with the neighbor's
business", Christopher, on his own, does some detective work to find out who killed the dog. By the
way, Christopher has a pet RAT, named Toby, who is well behaved.
It all works out in the end; Christopher' s mother and father declare a truce, the neighbors
reconcile, Chris take a Maths A test and passes with flying colors, and he is beginning to
understand people's emotions. In the end of the story, a Golden Retriever puppy comes to live
with Christopher, who names him Sandy.
This is a story about a precocious young lad, whose actions, at times, seem irritating. The dialog
seems both funny and sad. Christopher’s future looks bright - he will become a scientist, I'm sure of
that. I hope you will enjoy reading this book, it is an easy read.

Seeking Knitters!
We would love to have you join us to knit and crochet Prayer Shawls. A Prayer
Shawl is a gift to someone, to “wrap” them in prayers and bring them comfort, love
and strength. Many blessings and prayers are knitted and crocheted into each shawl
as it is made and later blessed during a worship service.
Please consider joining us on Wednesday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. for an hour or so. We have yarn,
needles and patterns or bring your own. Want to learn … come, and we will teach you!
To learn more, please contact the Church Office at 775.4301 or Marty Barclay at 775.1076.
