EASTERN SERENITY is not a huge corporation disguised as a marketing concept. We are indeed an independent project that strives to bring beautiful things to interested fellow travelers. Our collection is produced by individual folk artists, village groups, and micro-businesses owned by single families. We also believe that the Fair Trade concept should not only improve conditions for workers but should also extend to offering high quality items and balanced prices for you.

Sometimes when organizations and systems get too big and complicated, it becomes more likely that the distribution of freedoms, responsibilities, and rewards become unbalanced. Small is better. Small is fair.

Having known our suppliers for years, we’ve been to their homes, met their families, and shared their cooking. We don’t purchase items from wholesalers, dealers, or middle-men. We only trade with people we know, and when you order from us, we will get to know you also.

We don’t cut corners. We are small and careful.

One of the many handicraft traditions in Lanna (northern Thailand) is the hand-carving of segmented teak panels that have become design favorites among Thais and world travelers alike. Like many Lanna carvings, the imagery evokes natural iconography with an eye toward the spiritual realm. The branches, leaves, and blossoms embody pastoral regularity while a lotus bud center and the hidden geometry of a mandala wheel shape provide a divine harmonic to complete the form. Hand-carved teak wood with a light clear-coat lacquer finish. All of the teak wood in our panels are sourced from registered suppliers who reclaim teak wood from old barns, homesteads, and other structures no longer in use. These intricate hand-carved teak houses are Thai spirit homes or ‘saan phra phum’. The people of Thailand believe that each plot of land contains local spirits in residence. When people build a new house or business this spirit must be offered a miniature abode to prevent any celestial interference in the household proper. According to folk-lore, the spirits themselves are neither good nor evil, but finicky and mischievous, demanding respect from humans and capable of disastrous actions if they don’t have a space of their own. Our spirit houses are hand-made in northern Thailand from small and off-size teak sections, left over from plantation teak furniture factories and reclaimed construction. Truly sustainable and eco-friendly, our houses are delivered without spirits, which are sold separately.

I N D I g oWhen the emperor of Japan passed sumptuary laws forbidding the wearing of silk, indigo’s importance blossomed - it was the only color that dyed to cotton effectively. Indigo dye is also especially significant given that blue dyes were once elusive centuries ago in Europe as it was produced only by laboriously soaking bundles of the indigo plant which was not native in western climates.

There are two traditional methods for processing indigo cotton: Batik & Shibori. Batik requires hot wax to be hand-pressed onto sheets of cotton using a carved block. When dyed, the wax resists the coloring, becoming porcelain white, the rest turns to hues of blue leaving a clear imprint. Shibori dying is where the fabric is folded and twisted tightly then dipped by hand into indigo dye. The infinite folds, twists, caps and stitch combinations that can be used in this method make every piece truly unique.
