September 12, 2009 11 a.m. (Central) TV: None THE GAME Eastern Illinois travels to Indiana State for the final meeting in this long series between the Panthers and Sycamores. Indiana State has decided not to renew the long standing series which been played between the two schools since 1902. EIU enters the game having won its Prairie State Rivalry game against Illinois State, 31-6, on Thursday night to open the season. In that game EIU transfer quarterback Jake Christensen threw for 167 yards and three touchdowns while the Panther defense stuffed the Redbirds to only 20 yards on the ground. ISU enters the game with two straights losses to open the season. They fell to NAIA member Quincy in overtime on Aug. 27 and lost 30-10 at Louisville on Saturday. THE SERIES This is the 83rd meeting between Eastern Illinois and Indiana State as the schools are separated by 50 miles and first played in 1902. Following this season the two schools will end their long standing rivalry as Indiana State has decided not to continue the series in 2010. The Panthers lead the series 41-37-4 having won four straight and 11 of the last 13 dating back to 1994. Last season EIU picked up a 38-3 victory at O’Brien Field after a 54-20 lopsided win in Terre Haute in 2007. Next year’s series hiatus will not be the first in the long rivalry. The schools did not play from 1908-1922 and again from 1975-1979. ISU enters with the nation’s longest active losing streak at 28 games.
