Liturgy of
the Word
Easter Sunday
First Reading A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 10:34, 37-43 We have eaten and drunk with him after his res-urrection from the dead. Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: ‘You must have heard about the recent happen-ings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil. Now I, and those with me, can witness to everything he did throughout the countryside of Judaea and in Jerusalem itself: and also to the fact that they killed him by hanging him on a tree, yet three days afterwards God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen, not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses God had chosen beforehand. Now we are those wit-nesses – we have eaten and drunk with him af-ter his resurrection from the dead – and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has appointed him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name.’ The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm (R.) This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. 1. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: ‘His love has no end.’ (R.) 2. The Lord’s right hand has triumphed; his right hand raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount his deeds. (R.) 3. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. (R.)
Second Reading A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Colos-sians Col 3:1-4
Look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is. Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hid-den with Christ in God. But when Christ is re-vealed – and he is your life – you too will be re-vealed in all your glory with him.
The Word of the Lord
Gospel Acclamation
1 Cor 5:7-8 Alleluia, alleluia! Christ has become our paschal sacrifice;
let us feast with joy in the Lord. Alleluia!
Gospel
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 6:1-7
When the sabbath was over, Mary
of Magdala, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices with which to go
and anoint him. And very early in the morn-ing on the first day of the week they went to the tomb, just as the sun was rising.
They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the en-trance to the tomb?’ But when they looked
they could see that the stone – which was very big – had already been rolled back. On
entering the tomb they saw a young man in a white robe seated on the right hand side, and they were struck with amazement. But he
said to them, ‘There is no need for alarm. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was
crucified: he has risen, he is not here. See, here is the place where they laid him. But you must go and tell his disciples and Peter,
“He is going before you to Galilee; it is there you will see him, just as he told you.”’ The Gospel of the Lord

Dear Friends,
Easter is a celebration not of the emptiness
of the tomb but of the content of that tomb: its
main content is, “We too will rise again as Jesus
rose.” Over the mausoleum that holds the mortal
remains of Queen Victoria and those of her
husband are inscribed the words: “Here at last I
will rest with thee, and with thee in Christ I shall
rise again.” An older cathedral stood on the site
of the present St Paul’s, London. It perished in the Great Fire of
1666. After the fire, the brilliant young architect Christopher Wren
designed a new cathedral that took 35 years to build. The first stone
that Wren picked up from the ruins of the old building bore the
inscription, “I will rise again.” Through baptism we already share in
the risen life of Jesus promised by the message of Easter: we die with
Him and we rise with Him.
Resurrection has created hope for our present and future existence.
God is present now. Faith in the resurrection has changed the way
we live our ordinary life. In Jesus there is no fear; there is only peace
and joy. The world and its fears hold no power over Christ. Judas
feared that he might be in the wrong ‘ball game’, so he betrayed Him,
only to experience the deeper fear of despair. The male disciples
feared the loss of status and lasting commitment to Jesus, so all
abandoned Him and one denied Him. Pilate feared losing power and
prestige. The establishment was afraid of being usurped by the
newcomer called Jesus. The crowds and the soldiers were afraid of
going against public opinion and hence all tried to destroy Him. But
Jesus feared not even death. His first words after Hi resurrection
were “Fear not.”
Congratulations to Tracy, Fiona, Daniel, Jenny, Linya, Jason,
Justin, and Rod who were baptised or received into full communion
of the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. May the Lord continue to
bless your journey and may you keep close to Our Lord through his
Holy Church.
~ Have a happy week, Fr Paul

LET US PRAY
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our
hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His
Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrec-
tion. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Our Weekly Easter Sunday
Fr Paul Turner Our entire society sees something special about Sunday. Business hours change. Breakfast menus expand. Work hours shrink. Sporting events surface. The newspaper inflates. Movie schedules increase. We expect leisure on Sunday. Part of the weekend, it begins the week and ends the week. It is a sacred day, a time outside normal time when life takes a break. Sunday symbolizes paradise, a place and pace of leisure and pleasure. How did all this happen? We Christians owned Sunday first. It is our most important day. On a Sunday Jesus rose from the dead (Mt 28:1). On Sundays his followers met to break bread (Acts
20:7). The resurrection is our most central belief. We choose Sunday for our primary gathering be-cause the day itself proclaims our faith. Mass on Wednesday or Monday just would not be the same. Sunday is Easter. You can change the day you shop for groceries or go to the bank without much loss. But church is different. It demands a particu-lar day, like a holiday or an anniversary. If we did not gather for Eucharist on Sunday, we have not proclaimed the resurrection. Our definition of “Sunday” includes Saturday night. This does not compromise to convenience. Jesus rose from the dead during the night. So our Eucharist still honors the resurrection when it takes place at the beginning of that night—namely, on Saturday evening. If a serious reason keeps you from attending church on Sunday, your pastor may dispense you. Your conversation with him honors your commit-ment to your community. On a Sunday when you cannot participate in the Eucharist, you may wish to pray the Scriptures of that day and share a prayer at meal with other believers. Unity, leisure, and prayer characterize a Sun-day. Our attendance at church unites us with the believers of our own community and with all Christians throughout the world. Our abstinence from work frees our mind for prayer. Football, food, and freedom are all supplementary to Sun-day’s main purpose, celebrating Eucharist. Stain Glass Windows
One of the most striking features of our church are the stain glass windows. I recently had an expert
check the windows. The windows in the main body
of the church are in good condition. However, the
four windows on the sanctuary are in need of repair,
particularly St Joseph the Worker window. To re-
store them will cost $15,000. I would be very grate-ful to anyone who can help financially in this im-
portant project.
PROJECT COMPASSION—Return Envelopes and
Boxes
We sincerely thank all those who have generously given to Project Compassion via the Project Compas-
sion collection boxes and envelopes. We ask that all
Project Compassion boxes and envelopes be re-
turned at Masses over Easter Weekend. Because of
your generosity all the boxes ran out. I will inform Project Compassion to increase the number of boxes they send us next year.
